Azkals versus Bengal Tigers: Philippines in must-win match against Bangladesh tonight

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on March 25, 2011 at 13:17 | Comment (1)
At least, the math is easy. If the Philippine national football team wins against Bangladesh tonight, it will advance to the final tournament of the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup, which is scheduled next year.

The Bengal Tigers are currently ahead of the Azkals in the standings, as a result of their shocking 2-0 win over Myanmar last Wednesday, a remarkable recovery after getting totally outclassed by Palestine on Monday.

Azkals versus Al-Fursan: A look at tonight’s match against the Palestinian football side

Al-Fursan

This afternoon, the Philippine national men’s football team will be going up against Palestine’s Al-Fursan (“The Knights”) in its second outing in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifiers in Rangoon, Myanmar. Although ranked a lowly #178 in the latest FIFA world rankings, Palestine is a dangerous opponent for the Azkals, as evidenced by its 2-0 victory over Bangladesh last Monday.

Football and the Junta: The Azkals kick off AFC Challenge Cup qualifier in Myanmar

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on March 21, 2011 at 16:25 | Comments (13)
Filipino fans that have caught the Azkals fever have been disappointed over the details of the coverage of the Philippine national team’s games in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup qualifiers, which kick off today in Rangoon.

The military junta’s regime in Myanmar – still Burma to pro-democracy activists – is known to be among the most restrictive in the world when it comes to the free flow of information. Local publications are monitored by a strict censors board, and rarely run news items beyond those in line with official government policy. Journalists who run afoul of the authorities are harassed and even jailed.

Azkals strategy: The 4-2-3-1 formation

Editor’s note: This post was written by Ryan Fenix, a football addict who runs the blog The Prawn Sandwich Brigade.

News reports coming in from Myanmar, thanks to Craig Burrows of PinoyFootball.com, suggest that the Azkals will employ the 4-2-3-1 formation later tonight in the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers against Myanmar. This is a more defensive variation of the 4-5-1 midfield formation.

Football Analysis: The Azkals take a step back against Mongolia in Ulan Bator

In the end, we lost the battle, but we won the war. But not before we had some unnecessarily tense moments out there.

Did the weather play a major factor in the Azkals loss to Mongolia in the second leg of its AFC Challenge Cup playoff in Ulan Bator? Absolutely.

What’s next for the Azkals

Posted by Jaemark Tordecilla on March 15, 2011 at 15:03 | Comments (8)
With its 3-2 aggregate victory over Mongolia, the Philippine national football team moves to the qualifying group stage of the AFC Challenge Cup which will be held from March 21 to 25 in Yangon, Myanmar. In the same group are teams that are curiously ranked lower than the Philippines (#151) in the latest FIFA World Ranking: Bangladesh (#174), Palestine (#178), and the hosts (#161). The Mongolian team which the Azkals just defeated was ranked #183.

Dorkapalooza!

The Sloan Sports Analytics Conference at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is an annual event that brings together top sports executives, coaches, media personalities, journalists, and bloggers. The 4th 5th edition of the conference, which popular sportswriter Bill Simmons has dubbed Dorkapalooza, happened this past weekend, and Pacific Rims author (and friend of the blog) Rafe Bartholomew was there to represent:

Rafe at Dorkapalooza

More football strategy talk: A deeper look at the Azkal’s exciting new offensive attack

Posted by Ryan Fenix on February 24, 2011 at 17:21 | Comments (3)
Editor’s note: Ryan Fenix continues his analysis of the Azkals with a look at the new offensive strategy installed by Coach Hans Weiss, and the role of each player in the new attack. Photos courtesy of S. Kieron Tan of SKT Digital Productions. Check out the first part if you missed it.

The 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup will always be memorable to Philippine football. The sport which had been forgotten in the country was catapulted to the front pages locally and internationally. There was newfound respect for the rag-tag Azkals, ensuring that opposing coaches and players would no longer look at the Philippine national football team with mock contempt in future competitions. Football won’t be the same again in these shores.

But arguably the greater legacy of our Cinderella run in the Cup is the stability it allowed the Philippine Football Federation to pursue its programs and grassroots level development. This is due in large part to the funding pledged by the private sector in light of the Azkals success.

Azkals strategy talk: Breaking down the tough defense of Mongolia’s Blue Wolves

Posted by Ryan Fenix on February 23, 2011 at 16:15 | Comments (3)
Editor’s note: This post was written by Ryan Fenix, a football addict who watched the Azkals game versus Mongolia in a hospital room shortly after his wife had given birth. He runs the football blog The Prawn Sandwich Brigade.

We should have won by a more comfortable margin against Mongolia in the first leg of our AFC Challenge Cup playoff at Panaad Stadium. I believe Azkals fans, basketball fans, boxing fans, and most neutral observers can agree on this.

It certainly would have helped our chances if we had a few more goals tucked under our belt, because the prospects of our boys playing in sub-zero temperature looms in the second leg of the tie, which will be held at the Mongolian capital of Ulaan Baatar.
