Editor’s note: This is the last of a three-part special guest post by Mark Lorenzana of Pinoy Fight Scribe, detailing the inspiring recovery of Z Gorres from a brain injury he suffered in a fight last year. See part 1 and part 2 of this report.

There is no denying now the courage, heart, and fighting spirit that Gorres has shown throughout his career, and perhaps more importantly, in his life. And, just recently, Z showed his trademark grit and steely resolve in this year's Sportswriters Association of Cebu-San Miguel Beer Sports Awards held at the Casino Español Ballroom.

Z Gorres’ dream turns into nightmare

Editor’s note: This is the second of a three-part special guest report by Pinoy Fight Scribe’s Mark Lorenzana on Z Gorres, the Filipino contender who suffered a brain injury in Las Vegas last year. The first part of the report can be read here.

It goes without saying that Colombian Luis Melendez, who currently sports a win-loss-draw record of 26-6-1 with 21 knockouts, is a solid contender. Like Gorres, Melendez had previously fought and lost to Fernando Montiel. The difference, however, is that Gorres lasted the distance against Montiel while Melendez was stopped in the 12th round. Melendez, though, went one up on Gorres in that he was able to knock down Montiel in their WBO super flyweight title fight three years ago, something that the Cebuano was not able to do.

Z Gorres: A dream’s beginning

Editor’s note: A few weeks ago, I emailed Mark Lorenzana of the excellent boxing blog Pinoy Fight Scribe to write a guest post for Fire Quinito. I asked him if he could write something about Z “The Dream” Gorres, the Filipino boxing contender who suffered a brain injury after a fight in Las Vegas last year. I thought he would write a quick note, something to refresh our minds about the fighter who has since been forgotten; instead he ended up writing almost 4,000 words on Z’s rise as an elite boxing prospect, his tragic Las Vegas fight, and his inspiring road to recovery. This is the first of three parts.

The first and only time I ever saw Z Gorres ply his trade in person was when he fought tough and hardy Kenyan Nick Otieno at the Cebu Waterfront Hotel a couple of years ago. The hotel in Lahug is, incidentally, a mere stone’s throw away from the Cebu IT Park where I work at my day job as a copywriter.

Filipino boxer Z Gorres undergoes emergency brain surgery, in critical condition after win in Las Vegas

Some very sad news broke out of Las Vegas on the eve of the much-anticipated Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight. Filipino fighter Z Gorres collapsed after his 10-round decision victory over Colombian Luis Melendez and was rushed to a Las Vegas hospital, where Boxing Scene reports that he was diagnosed with subdural hematoma. Gorres had to be placed in a medically-induced coma as doctors had to remove part of his skull to relieve the swelling of his brain.

It was an unfortunate turn of events for Gorres, whose win over Melendez would have assured him of a spot in a new Pinoy Power card headlined by Nonito Donaire next year. Instead, he is now battling for his life. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Z and his family.
