Foreign teams’ coaches wary of Smart Gilas ahead of 2011 FIBA-Asia Champions Cup
The Smart Gilas Pilipinas national team has competed twice before in the FIBA-Asia Champions Cup since the squad was first organized, and could now be considered veterans of the tournament. Only months after it was formed, Gilas saw action in the club competition in 2009 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Powered by former import CJ Giles, the team ran off to an impressive 3-1 record in the preliminary round of the tournament. But the team lost wind in the knockout quarterfinals round, bowing to the Al-Arabi team of Qatar. The team managed to win its last two consolation round games to salvage fifth place.
The team traveled to Dubai for the 2010 edition of the tournament. Gilas barely made it past the preliminary round with a 1-3 record, before losing to Lebanon’s powerhouse Al-Riyadi team. The national team won its final game to finish seventh in the competition.

Alaska trades Joe Devance for Jay-R Reyes
Since the end of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, the Internet has been abuzz with blind items and rumors about trades that were being discussed by teams around the league. The first domino fell last night, as Waylon Galvez of the Manila Bulletin reports that the Alaska Aces have sent do-everything forward Joe Devance to the Air 21 Express in exchange for the talented if underachieving Jay-R Reyes, pending approval from Commissioner Chito Salud.

SLAM Philippines out now!

I’ve been a fan of SLAM since high school, and up until a few years ago I still bought the magazine every month, until the hefty price tag (~P500-P600 a pop) made me reassess its place in my life’s list of priorities.
From the Stands: PBA finals breakdown, a look at various issues about the league, and the NBA playoffs
UPDATE 2: FIXED the podcast. Sorry for the delay folks!
UPDATE: There seems to be a problem with the first part of the podcast, which was muted inadvertently. The fixed version would be uploaded tonight.
In the latest episode of the From the Stands podcast, Chuck Araneta, Polo Bustamante and Carlo Pamintuan deliver a post-mortem on a Game 6 for the ages between TnT and Ginbera, as well as deliver opposing views (and blows) about some of the decisions and directions of the PBA. And with the NBA Playoffs in full swing, they break down the Eastern & Western Conference Finals.
Click on the player to listen, or download the file, or subscribe to it on iTunes or on RSS. And leave a comment, the From the Stands boys just might discuss them in the next episode, or even invite you to come along.

Pacific Rims now out on paperback
Got a text message earlier this afternoon from Pacific Rims author and occasional Fire Quinito contributor Rafe Bartholomew. He’s been back in town for a few weeks now, and he has some great news to announce about his book:
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to swing by tomorrow because I’m in Caramoan for the weekend. But show Rafe your love and head on over to Galleria tomorrow. He’s got all the details in his blog, and he made it clear he’s willing to sign chests – male or female.
Great news! The paperback of Pacific Rim will be released tomorrow. This is two weeks before the U.S. release, and I would be honored if you could join me at the book launch. It’s tomorrow, Saturday, May 21 6:30 PM at National Bookstore Bestsellers, 4th Floor Robinsons Galleria. Hope to see you there!

The 1989 PBA All-Star Game
The PBA hasn’t had a particularly interesting All-Star Game since 1989, the year when the midseason matchup became an annual event. For most fans going into the game, the big storyline was the reunion of Ramon Fernandez and Robert Jaworski, stalwarts of the old Toyota powerhouse team who had since been estranged.
As a diehard 7-year-old Purefoods fan, however, I couldn’t care less about the Veterans; my heart was for the Rookies-Sophomores team through and through. The youngsters included five players from my favorite team: sophomores Jojo Lastimosa, Alvin Patrimonio, and Jerry Codiñera, and rookies Nelson Asaytono and Dindo Pumaren. Conversely, the Veterans were comprised mainly of stars from my team’s hated rivals San Miguel, then in the middle of its Grand Slam season, featuring Fernandez, Samboy Lim, Elmer Reyes, Yves Dignadice, and Hector Calma.

Smart Gilas, Talk N Text, and Alaska ‘98
Because both teams are bankrolled by Manny Pangilinan, sports fans assumed that it would not be an issue for the Talk N Text Tropang Texters to lend its players to the Smart Gilas Pilipinas National Team, which is scheduled to represent the country in the 2011 Fiba-Asia Championship. Talk N Text team captain Jimmy Alapag and power forward Kelly Williams had been eyed by Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman to reinforce the national squad, along with Meralco’s Asi Taulava and Air 21’s Dondon Hontiveros.
The idea was that lending the players to Smart Gilas would allow the professionals to become familiar with their teammates and with Toroman’s system. But it would also mean that these players would not play for their club teams for the PBA’s season-ending Governor’s Cup.

Talk N Text survives Ginebra in game 6 epic to win 2011 PBA Commissioner’s Cup

Manny Pangilinan and his Talk N Text Tropang Texters really would have wanted to close out its best-of-seven PBA Commissioner’out last Friday. The problem with winning last night was that Manny Pacquiao was fighting earlier in the day, which meant that news of Talk N Text’s second straight title would be buried under the headlines of the pound-for-pound king’s victory.

From the Stands: PBA finals talk, All-Star game, Jun Limpot vs Jay Washington
In the latest episode of the From the Stands podcast, Chuck Araneta, Polo Bustamante and Carlo Pamintuan look back at the last three games of the ongoing PBA Commissioner's Cup finals between Talk N Text and Ginebra. They also look ahead to the All-Star Game, and discuss ways to fix the annual classic. In this week's old school/new school, they take a look at the maddening careers of two of the most gifted PBA big men ever, Jun Limpot and Jay Washington.
