Smart Gilas places fourth in the 2011 FIBA-Asia Champions Cup

If you missed it, here’s my report on Smart Gilas Pilipinas’ heartbreaking loss to Mahram of Iran last Saturday.

I wasn’t able to file a report for Sunday’s game, but Karl Decena, whom you might remember as the college student who wrote this excellent profile on Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao, filled in for me to write about the Philippine team’s loss against Qatar.

I don't quite agree with the report. Surprisingly, the stats sh owes that Gilas had better shooting(35%) and Qatar had 31%. All elements of the game are in favour of Gilas except rebounds. It was 18 more for Qatar. That killed them. Also I wouldn't say that it was the defense of Qatar, even though they are very athletic. Gilas missed all open shuts. Wide open!!!!!! Gilas just needs more stable character. How to achieve that? I don't know, but at least one steady leader is needed.

I believe that Pilipinas had trouble defending and getting rebounds. That is their main problem. They need more athletic defenders in the likes of NORWOOD and DILLINGER who both can play multiple positions. The game against QATAR was a clear example of lack of discipline on defense and were out hustled by the opponent. QATAR is one of the best defenders in the CUP as they jump in front of every shooter, they defended well the 3 point area and the transition plays. DEFENSE is KEY not OFFENSE. But still I like the chances of PILIPINAS now but please, get YENG GUIAO as your defensive coach.... ;)
#2.1 aze on 2011-06-07 11:42 (Reply)
the last time i saw yeng coaching the national team. we are losing by 10+ points or even worst by 20+ to other teams. now w/c one is better as defensive coach yeng or toroman? you know y yeng is effective here locally? simply because ulul sya.
#2.2 gilasfun on 2011-06-07 12:56 (Reply)
Yeng Guiao lost the game from Gilas, together with his defense and Norwood!!!!! The key is a re bounder beside Douthit. We had a lot of easy shooting opportunities, but it was a bad shooting day. Typical filipino mentality, after heart breaking loss from Iran.
#2.2.1 GILASCRITICPILIPINASFANATIC on 2011-06-07 20:27 (Reply)
LOL. Coach Yeng lost all his games last FIBA asia because of his offensive schemes and patterns, all but crap. But to be true to all his critics, he is one of the best defensive coaches in the country, next is coach chot. He instills to his players mental toughness and this clearly shows on their defense. They were not afraid on defending bigger guys, they were not afraid on being picked up in the floor and THEY WERE NOT BULLIED, because they were THOUGH. They stand their ground and they are ready to fight (literally). DEFENSE is the only thing that kept them on the run until the 9th place.

And with gabe norwood and jared dillinger, we can use them as defenders for bigger guards for lebanon and jordan which have 6'6" point guards. They are very agile and knows how to defend. The only downside with this guys is their shooting ability and their offense

LOL I don't agree with you. But everyone can have an opinion, even if it's not logical. "THEY WERE NOT BULLIED BECAUSE THEY WERE TOUGH"???!!!! Dude, they were not bullied because descent people exist, you know! The coach who respects the job doesn't say to the players of the other team fuck you, like Yeng is doing, This coaches don't have the strategy that involves"defense"strategy of hitting someones balls, or elbow in a head. They are fighting with the knowledge. Most importantly, Gilas boys doesn't have to learn how to bull(from Yeng), because no one under the hat of FIBA is doing that, neither refs allow it. Did you watch NBA play offs? The whole US was alerted with a little bit rougher game that Lakers showed. For days they were talking about it! And here, we have people who glorify bulling, curses and hitting people's balls????!!!!!! I think that Gilas strategy is great, in defense and offense. You mentioned your respect(me too) for coach Chot. Well, coach Chot in his interview with Jaemark(look for earlier entries) said that he is using the defense strategy from Gilas. I believe that it must be good. Coach Chot knows what he is doing. One thing is for sure, they need some reinforcements. I believe that's why Williams and Alapag will join.

atleast im more logical than you. hahaha. I dont hate Gilas, i look at both of the sides and one thing is for sure, GILAS or rather PILIPINAS won't win with that kind of defense. Id rather see yeng guiao or coach chot coach PILIPINAS with defense that a team with so much offense and little defense. DEFENSE wins title my friend. AND LETS STOP CALLING THEM GILAS coz THEY ARE PILIPINAS. People call MVP makabayan and he tagged and used SMART GILAS over and over rather thatn pilipinas. TEAM PILIPINAS was used over2 for the past years, why SMART GILAS NOW? Also, GILAS players ain't nationalistic as everyone thought, they are payed lucrative amount of salary, bigger that almost all of the PBA players, while years back, PBA backed teams played without payment (except from club salary). Also, last point. I LOVE HOW PILIPINAS plays, they give it their all, they create opportunities for each other, but still they lack TOUGHNESS which is needed for international competitions. I also love coach T, but I dnt want him as coach, but as a consultant. Coach Chot can coach the national team.

And to rest my case, God bless PILIPINAS and God bless TEAM PILIPINAS.

Nung nag coach si chot sa PHL team sa FIBA ASIA last 2007, pang siyam tayo. Kay Yeng Guiao nung 2009, pang walo. Pang ilan kaya tayo ngayong 2011?

I respect coach Chot for his result in PBA. Internationally, he did nothing. Nothing! You are giving the advice to the coach, champion of Asia???!!! He doesn't have the recipe, you do???!!! He kicked the ass of every coach in PBA, and if it were justice and fair refs, they would won, not only every game with a bigger difference, but the Conference.!!! Our Nationals(accept your suggestion) were treated like shit. I will stop with this, because there's enough jealousy already. And what is the nationalism for?! We are God given people, or what?! We can not accept the fact that there are better people than us?! You want a consultant, so that local coach can take the glory for someone else's knowledge?! Iranians don't have this egomania that we are suffering from. That's why they stayed on the top.And last, I agree we need toughness, and that can bring some new player(Williams, or someone else).
#2.2.1.1.1.3 oh my God on 2011-06-08 15:32 (Reply)
Dude, can we make a deal? Can u be my consultant? I took a tough course, have some problems, mathematics and other shit. You study, do my homework, tests....and I will take a DIPLOMA!!! What do u say?
This is bullshit! I'm sick and tired of "patriots" who are watching basketball from their sofa and give advices to pros. Our "patriots" were not able to come to the venue to support our team in a fight for bronze. Turned their back(before that also empty) after the heart braking loss from Iran(stronger team). And we played semis for the first time in 15 years! So, don't bullshit here about big nationalistic ideas. That foreign coach did for us more than we are doing. I"m ashamed of false patriots!

Yeng showed how his system works on last FIBA Asia. We were 9Th, I think. His defense is nothing but bulling!
#4 KC on 2011-09-27 14:33 (Reply)
all comment are interesting. You know guys since early 2010, i am watching every game Smart Gilas (Pililpinas) lost or win im still no.1 fan of them. Last Fiba Asia Championship all games of Smart Gilas Pilipinas are interesting. Coach strategy sometime strange but its good. only just the coach can never teach the player how to shoot free throw. thats why we lost badly by two points. thats the story of the game. we end up 4rth. WE SHOULD BE PROUD OF THAT AS A FILIPINO...hoping next two years another Team will surprise and making it to the no.1 instead of no.4 rank. if you are talking about the coach..Much better to hired coach coming from Europe the are familiar with FIBA system this not to look down PBA coach. they can do also but repeated tactics no international exposure game.
