FIBA-Asia Champions Cup day 5: Dondon Hontiveros shines against Jordan

The last time Dondon Hontiveros was on the court against basketball players from Jordan, the game ended in heartbreak for millions of Filipino basketball fans. The Philippine national basketball team was defeated by Jordan in the 2007 FIBA-Asia Championship, slamming the door on the medal hopes of Hontiveros, his teammates, and his countrymen.

It’s unclear if the hotshot from Cebu still harbors any bitterness from that loss, but with his performance on Wednesday night, it wasn’t hard to imagine him carrying a chip on his shoulder. Hontiveros scored 23 points -- pouring in six three-pointers -- to lead SMART-Gilas Pilipinas to a hard-earned 76-74 victory over Applied Science University, which featured stars Sam Daghlas and Zaid Abbas, members of the Jordan team that beat the Philippines in 2007.

Congrats, congrats Gilas!!!! Great performance from Don2!!!! But what amazes me, are some stupid people on twitter that are congratulating Eala, "the architect" of Gilas????!!!! He has nothing with this team more than 1,5 years.There's only one good thing that he did. Brought the coach who did the whole job, and made amateurs playing like pro. That's the the decision that I'm giving him credit for. Everything else is bo...shit. Luckily, he is not there any more. He can now continue promoting himself in SMC, until the next blow!!!!!
GO GILAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats to Gilas!

@Philosopher hehe syempre nasa grupo na siya ng MAS sikat, kaya mga fans nun would do all pambobola kasi they need him and he needs them. Kailangan magbolahan.

Though, I also appreciate what Eala contributed to the formation of Smart Gilas and I commend him for his idea and how he envisioned the building of a long-term program for our NT.

Nawala lang respeto ko sa kanya ng halos parang isuka niya PBA before at magkaroon ng mataas na ego para di humingi ng kaunting tulong sa PBA (like asking for PBA players to play for flag).

Ngayon he's part of the PBA again and saying that his team (SMC) will be willing to play for flag if only requested again (which maybe true, knowing SMC they'd always there to support NT for many years) but LOL to Mr. Eala sa pagsubo ng mga sinuka niya noon. Tsktsktsk.

Napapaisip ako ngayon ano kaya pakiramdam nung mga fans ni Eala na halos isuka ang PBA at pagbanggain at pagtalunin ang PBA at Gilas?

Dondon's game just proves that Gilas and PBA can work together for the Nation's pride.

the last time Taulava was on the court against players from Jordan... nevermind. :-D

just wanna point out that this is our NT minus Alapag and Williams beating a club team from Jordan with a bigger import and two of its NT's best players. this game showcased the heart of the Gilas players (watch Casio's clutch teardrop) and the talent level of PBA players. really excited how our NT would play like at full-strength. hope our players don't get full of themselves as there are better teams ahead.
