Alaska trades Joe Devance for Jay-R Reyes

Since the end of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, the Internet has been abuzz with blind items and rumors about trades that were being discussed by teams around the league. The first domino fell last night, as Waylon Galvez of the Manila Bulletin reports that the Alaska Aces have sent do-everything forward Joe Devance to the Air 21 Express in exchange for the talented if underachieving Jay-R Reyes, pending approval from Commissioner Chito Salud.

It was hardly any surprise that Devance had been traded. Multiple sources close to the team have told me that the player has long been unhappy with Alaska, and team manager Joaqui Trillo seemed to confirm this while talking about the trade. Said Trillo: “We decided to let go of Joe. Well, he wanted out, despite us giving him the maximum salary. He wanted to seek greener pasture.”

I heard that the situation was similar to that of former Alaska star Willie Miller, who also complained about his salary with Alaska despite already receiving the maximum allowed by the league. Some people openly wondered if Devance’s statement expressing his wish to volunteer to play for the national team, Smart Gilas, was really just a ploy for him to signal to the richer teams in the league that he wanted out of Alaska.

It’s curious that he ended up with Air 21, which is definitely not one of the richer teams in the league, although there has been talk that San Miguel Corporation is interested in buying the franchise. It’ll be interesting to see if Devance stays long with the team, or if he’ll be sent to the highest bidder as Air 21 has been wont to do.

It’s a bit of a surprise that the Aces weren’t able to get more from Devance, who had been one of the most productive players in the league the past two years. Wouldn’t a team with a lot of frontcourt shortcomings like Ginebra have been perfect for Devance? Isn’t a package of JC Intal and John Wilson from the Gin Kings a better deal for Alaska?

It’ll be very interesting to see how this trade affects Alaska on the basketball court. Devance hasn’t been a favorite among Alaska fans because of his lack of fire, and his perceived tendency to shrink in big games, but his versatile game was perfect for the team’s system, and that’s going to be really hard to replace. Reyes, meanwhile, has for years tantalized everyone with his potential, but he hasn’t been able to turn that into consistent production. Alaska fans are hoping that this will turn out to be another wacky move for the team.

Devance’s entry into Air 21 is interesting too, but it’s tempered by the fact that no one’s sure how long he’ll stay with the team. This has been the third major trade for the Express just this season, after midwifing the Sol Mercado deal, where they also acquired Reyes, before the start of the 2nd conference, and the big trade with San Miguel in the middle of the last tourney. What’s clear though is that this is just the beginning of a trading frenzy that will happen in the PBA in the weeks to come.

Di fair yung deal. Sana di maaprubahan ni comm. it needs revision Alaska should not bite the bait, JOE is way better than Jay-R.

Di naman sa minamaliit ko si Jay-R actually he got a lot of potential, if I were to choose between Jay-R or Arwind mas gusto ko si Jay-R kasi mas PF ang laro ni Jay-R.

Maraming fans nalungkot na nawala si Joe, though he's not clutch as LA definitely we appreciate his game and value in this team.

Kaya generally Alaska fans don't agree na FAIR deal yung trade. Value per se dehado ang Alaska. But since JDV was reported that he is wanting out of Alaska 'yun nga napilitan na rin ang Alaska na ibigay ang gusto niya.

But I really hope Comm. would suggest to Alaska and Air21 a revision:

JOE and 2nd rd pick for Jay-R and Urbiztondo, that's a FAIR deal right there.

---------------------

JC Intal + John Wilson is better than Jay-R trade pero it will not fill-in the void that will be left but Joe on PF-spot. At least with Jay-R it was somehow filled, kaya hindi rin talaga ok yung rumored Arwind (1-on-1 deal).

What Alaska need is a solid PG backup for LA.

In trading Joe iniisip din siyempre ng Alaska yung ipapalit sa posisyon na naiwan ni Joe. And Jwash one-on-one deal would be fair but who's team gonna trade a bigman like Jaywash (if this player is not asking for a trade). Kung kay Ranidel naman medyo di rin fair on part of Alaska and I don't think TNT would release Ranidel, Kung kay Kelly naman parang kay Jaywash din.

So the only PF in the league left (that is not much a high maintenance) is Jay-R.

Yung nga lang di naman equal ang value.

Sana ipa-revise ni Comm., at kung mangyari yung WISH ko, I'll be contented with this trade. I know I'm just a fan pero para sa akin di talaga FAIR yung deal.

--------------------------
Salamat na rin kay Joe ngayon mas magiging happy na siya sa 4TH TEAM niya, SMC or MVP team? isang himala 'pag di 'yan trinade ng AIR21. LOL

Devance might've been unhappy with his perks with Alaska. Kahit na max salary pa sila ni Miller, baka nabababaan sila sa perks na binibigay ng management. As per Pacific Rims, gatas lang daw binibigay ng Alaska e. Hehehe

JDV wants to earn more than the max just like jyap, jwash, cardona, etc.

Latest word is kume might not approve of this deal if it's solely a 1on1 swap; rightfully so. if not for alaska's rather early ousters, jdv would be leading the mvp vote for the season. he's led both conf's thus far in stats after the elim rounds. Reyes is certainly not enough compensation for jdv.

There are only a handful of players IMO who are worth giving up jdv for: jwash, jyap, norwood, kelly, cardona, japeth, and rabeh, the latter 2 mainly due to their youth and upside.

I'll be glad to see Jayr prove the doubters wrong but this is a horrible deal for alaska.
#9 Will on 2011-05-27 16:47 (Reply)
Now that this deal is "on hold", i hope kume will ask Air21 to revise the deal.

Adding it's 2011 pick is a must IMO to make this deal somewhat decent.

pwd JDV-David?

THIS TRADE IS JUST LIKE:

James Yap for JayR Reyes straight-up; if BMEG fans or people who follows PBA don't think its unfair then hell to them.

If Jay Washington for JayR Reyes is fair for SMB fans or anyone who follows PBA, hell to them too.

JDV is not a STATISTICAL LEADER for nothing. Obviously Alaska left no choice but to get on this trade since JOE allegedly wants out of Alaska; JayR is the only choice left because aside from Jaywash and Williams they were the only PFs that are of equal value with Joe, Alaska bite the bait.

On this thing mas mautak lang ang AIR21 siyempre Alaska lang naman kapalitan nila. Unless the Aces is willing to show the money.

This trade is unfair! Good thing Coach Tim knows how to make a likely lopsided trade a golden one.

Pero Commissioner must still do his part and that is to tell these two teams to revised the proposal and make it FAIR for both squads.

JDV = JRR + picks, and it should be set.
#13 swaggerbox on 2011-05-27 23:49 (Reply)
one thing you people should realize is that Alaska initiated this trade deal, not Air21. You cant get fair value for Devance since everyone knows he wants out and Alaska is desperate to trade him. JDV for JR straight up isnt equal no doubt but it is Alaska who wants it. They've been eyeing JR since his amateur days and they probably feel they can unleash his full potential as a player in their system.
#13.1 commissioner on 2011-05-28 00:24 (Reply)
I like the double standards that these non-Alaska fans are showing regarding this deal. Saying that the Aces came forward with this deal and shit. This deal is very similar to the Air21 San Miguel 1st trade proposal for the blockbuster deal that landed Rabeh, Baclao and Rey to their hands. 1st trade proposal was as crazy as this as we saw Yeo, Mick and other players offered for the big 3, and the supposedly face of the franchise of air21.

THis JDV-JRR trade is just ridiculous. Before Barrios left the league, he made a survey on what caused the attendance drop of the PBA, one of the main cause is the approval of lopsided deals, which Salud has been preventing successfully since the 1st day he took seat as the commissioner of the PBA, if he is serious with this goal, there is no way he should approve this deal regardless of the scenario that the Aces has alreadu been pushed to the limit as JDV wants out.

JDV is arguably one the top 5 players in the league. JR Reyes cant even crack the top 5 of Air21.

If Alaska is stuck with this package then Salud should face a much bigger problem. Salary cap and tampering. Its clear that JDV would not have asked for a bigger salary had he not been recruited by the teams going over the cap, and had the PBA been strict with the salary cap. In the NBA tampering is not allowed, thats why Dan GIlbert has hired researchers to gather evidences that there were indeed tampering prior to last year regarding the recruitment of LeBron to Miami. And salary cap. Alaska is only among the few "good guys" of the league. They are strictly following the salary cap and have in fact made sacrificial moves to make deals just to cut salaries. Will the commissioner allow the good guys to be harmed? We'll find out. To me 2 1sts and JayR Reyes would make this trade work, not adding the players. Because Air21's 1st round picks wont be worth anything because the commissioner has already set the bar for them by placing DH, DS and DP for RA, NB and RG.

Just because Alaska seem to get the better end of previous deals shouldn't make this as an excuse that this trade should not be revised. The improvement of the players are based on the hard work and training the coaching and training staff of Alaska spends on their player, as this is their only way of putting up competitive team against the teams who goes way over the cap. It is not because Alaska sees JayR better than JDV.
#13.1.1 swaggerbox on 2011-05-28 09:51 (Reply)
you really can't compare this deal to the San Miguel-Air 21 deal because Air21 did not initiate it, San Miguel did. We're not talking about the value of JDV here bcoz everyone knows he's far better than JR. When Alaska peddled JDV to Air21 they know they can't get value for value, like when they traded Larry for Elmer Espiritu. The thing is, Alaska wants to dispose JDV and they see the Air21 deal as the best that they can get, because if not, why would they pursue this trade. If, on the other hand, it was Air21 who initiated this deal, every Alaska fan should have the right to complain it's lopsided.

#15 commissioner on 2011-05-28 20:04 (Reply)
How sure are you Alaska wasn't the one who initiated the deal? Think about it, SMC BADLY WANTED JDV on their fold so they offered Santos for JDV, Alaska turned it down. Its obvious why Alaska turned it down. Santos is receiving more than maximum salary, exactly the same reason they opted to deal JDV. Thus, they sent Air21, the likely "whore" of the next SMC trades, to deal with Alaska first.
#16 SEECRAFTS FURNITURE on 2011-05-30 11:14 (Reply)
So smc is still unsure what picks it will send alaska it's clear jdv isn't playing for air21. they better be atleast 1st rounders. one this year and another next year would be ideal.

Now that it's public knowledge jdv wants a salary over the 350k max; and other "star" players are getting the said monthly pay via under the table deals, the question now is if com.salud is going to do something about it.
#16.1 swaggerbox on 2011-05-30 19:53 (Reply)
Steady, without a hard proof, that would be a very difficult job for the Commissioner
#16.1.1 SEECRAFTS FURNITURE on 2011-06-01 12:30 (Reply)
The fact that jdv is asking for more than the 350k alaska is paying already tells the whole story.

If the pba is serious about stopping under the table deals, it's time to include the BIR in the equation. how much are the taxes the players are paying as per their "salaries", and so on.
#17 swaggerbox on 2011-05-30 19:47 (Reply)
If it was Air21 who initiated the deal, Alaska would want MORE for JDV. See also Rey Joble's article.
http://www.gmanews.tv/story/222054/sports/pba-commissioner-salud-gives-alaska-2-more-picks-in-devance-reyes-trade

The 2 future picks included in the deal are Air21's 2011 and 2012 SECOND round picks.

Jaemark, if this report's accurate, you'll be rooting for JDV soon! -- http://www.philstar.com/SportsArticle.aspx?articleId=691520&publicationSubCategoryId=69

The league really is a joke. Uytengsu unleashed a tirade against the blatant violation of salary cap and trading rules a year ago and now, Alaska's been forced to let one of their more talented players go because they refuse to pay more than the max--and predictably, Air21 turns around and deals him to an SMC team. Hay naku.

What's firequinito's reaction on the JDV for Canaleta & Salcador trade? Fair, unfair, wacky or what?
#19 JIMBO 2.0 on 2011-05-31 23:59 (Reply)
It really is a big joke of a league, with AIR21 being the resident PIMP of the league.

AIR21 ..... "Players Mo, Sagot Ko"

AIR21 ..... "Boto Mo, Sagot Ko"

AIR21 ..... "Pimpin' Aint Easy"
#20 commissioner on 2011-06-01 00:33 (Reply)
still, just because Alaska inititated the deal doesn't give mean JDV's value isn't anywhere it should be. To continue the parity in this league, Salud did the right move by not approving the trade.
