Smart Gilas, Talk N Text, and Alaska ‘98

Because both teams are bankrolled by Manny Pangilinan, sports fans assumed that it would not be an issue for the Talk N Text Tropang Texters to lend its players to the Smart Gilas Pilipinas National Team, which is scheduled to represent the country in the 2011 Fiba-Asia Championship. Talk N Text team captain Jimmy Alapag and power forward Kelly Williams had been eyed by Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman to reinforce the national squad, along with Meralco’s Asi Taulava and Air 21’s Dondon Hontiveros.

The idea was that lending the players to Smart Gilas would allow the professionals to become familiar with their teammates and with Toroman’s system. But it would also mean that these players would not play for their club teams for the PBA’s season-ending Governor’s Cup.

This presents an interesting scenario for Talk N Text, which won the first two championships of the 2010-11 PBA season and is now in a position to win what would be only the fifth “Grand Slam” in PBA history. With history in its sights, at least one member of the team, Harvey Carey, has openly campaigned against the idea of losing Alapag and Williams for the 3rd Conference:

Harvey Carey tweet

Talk N Text coach Chot Reyes, meanwhile, sounded a lot more cautious. “If I would have my way, of course I would want them to play for Talk n Text and the national team,” he said in an interview with the Philippine Star’s Nelson Beltran.

But according to PBA commissioner Chito Salud, there’s virtually no chance of that happening. “We will not allow that,” he told Beltran. “It’s unfair to Air21 and Meralco which, after the second conference, readily released Dondon Hontiveros and Asi Taulava to the national team.”

With its national team commitment and its opportunity for a triple crown, this current Talk N Text squad has drawn comparisons to the 1998 Alaska team bannered by season MVP Kenneth Duremdes, Johnny Abarrientos, Jojo Lastimosa, and Bong Hawkins. Like the Texters this season, that Alaska team had won the year’s first two championships.

For Lastimosa, the captain of that Alaska team, the comparison doesn’t hold much water. “If you take away Jimmy and Kelly [from Talk N Text], you still have Carey, Jared [Dillinger], Ryan [Reyes], Larry [Fonacier] and [Jason] Castro, plus the import,” he told this blog in a text message this weekend. “Unlike in ’98 Alaska, when the RP team got Ken, Johnny, and myself. And oh, we didn’t have [Alaska coach] Tim [Cone, who called the shots for the national team]. TNT can still win it without those two (Jimmy and Kelly).”

Jolas wanted to stay with Alaska for a shot at a third title in 1998, and had in fact told Tim Cone to just give his slot to Jeffrey Cariaso instead. “We should have won two Grand Slams,” he said.

But Cone insisted that he join the team in Bangkok, Thailand, saying that his services were needed there. Much to his frustration, however, Jolas found himself glued to the bench for most of the tournament. He finally got to play in the team’s last game, the bronze medal match against Kazakhstan, and carried the team to victory – a performance that most Pinoy fans still remember fondly today, and just might be Lastimosa’s defining moment in Philippine basketball.

touche on the last sentence. defining indeed. i watched that game when I was in HS. Good thing Lastimosa bailed us out vs. Kazakhstan. It's the last glorious and feel-good moment in Pinoy basketball too, after competition has toughened up lately and after the nightmares of the 2002 and 2010 Asiad (not to take anything away from Gilas).
#2 ginkingsfan on 2011-05-16 17:59 (Reply)
I don't get this. They created Smart Gilas which was supposed to be our national team. The idea was not to borrow anymore players from the PBA. The PBA eventually adjusted its calendar after being relieved from any obligations of forming a national team.

I'm not against this lending of players. In fact, it is a great idea. But for me, the SBP can't just say they have Smart Gilas and they don't need the PBA, and all of a sudden, here they are asking for players from the PBA anytime they need to...

The PBA will always be needed for international competition no matter what. They have the best basketball players the Philippines has to offer. But still, a great plan is always important. Right now, Smart Gilas is like pushing the emergency button everytime there's a tournament. They don't even have a back-up plan if someone gets injured.. All they do is just borrow from the PBA if there are problems..

In short, if they really had a plan, they should have thought of these things from the beginning.. I would love Smart Gilas to win. But if this is how they do things, I suggest they suspend the next conference and just let the Barangay Ginebra Kings play in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup...

LOL at ginkingfans suggestion tu pit in BGK for FIBA champions cup. and then what, lose by 30+ points against middle eastern team? hehehe. please, know your basketball well. It's not that because team A beat team B and team B beat team C, it means team A will beat team C. Know the game, wag masyado fanatic. #triplecrown

maybe it was noli eala who said that said that they would not need pba players for smart gilas. lol
#2.2.1 ginkingsfan on 2011-05-17 20:14 (Reply)
Yep. It was Noli Eala. I can't find the Philippine Star article but he did said it after Yeng Guiao suggested that players from the PBA should still represent the country for intl competitions..
#2.2.1.1 no namer on 2011-05-19 13:14 (Reply)
if that really came from eala, then that means it is total bullcrap. of course it's no surprise that he would not ask for any help from the pba, considering that he got ousted from his commish position. his decision not to ask for players reeks of bitterness. good thing he is no longer associated with gilas.
#3 Jowjow on 2011-05-17 10:20 (Reply)

#4 LEXCORPAR on 2011-05-17 11:29 (Reply)
the move of not getting the services of alapag and williams in the champions cup is pure business decision, and a breach of previous understanding.

it is clear that mvp wants history to make and all toroman should do is try to convince us that smart-gilas doesnt need these two, and blah and blah blah and blah!

the problem with this self-interest is a loss of confidence of air21 and meralco who readily adhered to their promise and commitment of lending their players.

kudos to comm chito salud for standing his ground on this matter.

for me and for other fans out there, comm salud's perpective should prevail in the interest of fair-play.

korek its not fair for any other ball club dont mislead other teams just to get your ambition of a grandslam. besides toroman side is to get this player without compromise mr. chot reyes.....

IN REPLY TO GINKINGSFAN, BROD DONT BE CONFUSED FIBA GAMES IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM PBA GAMES AND IT IS WAY WAY BELOW FROM INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS.THERE IS NO CHANCE FOR GINEBRA TO WIN A SINGLE GAME IN THE CHAMPIONS CUP. IN REGARDS TO YOUR ISSUE ABOUT BARROWING PLAYERS FROM PBA IS NON OF YOUR BUSSINESS.IN THE FIRST PLACE YOU DONT RUN SMART GILAS TEAM.YOU ARE NOT EVEN COACH OF THE TEAM. IF YOU HAVE FOLLOWED GILAS FROM THE START THEY WERE ASSEMBLED YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHY THEY ARE BARROWING PBA PLAYERS.BESIDES THEY DONT BARROW WHO EVER STAR FROM THE PBA THEY ONLY GET WHAT THE TEAM MISSING PUZZLE.
#7.1 Smarter Gilas on 2011-05-18 16:57 (Reply)
You need to BARROW a spelling book.
#7.2 ginkingsfan on 2011-05-18 17:57 (Reply)
first, check your spelling.. please..

second, it is my business because just like anyone of us, being filipinos we are part of this team. their success is our success as well.. I may not have a say on how they do things, but still, I do have the right to speak my mind right?

third, I followed this team from the very start and I know why this team was created. they thought that since the marketing model and structure of the PBA is not suited to field a national team committed for a long term program, Smart Gilas is the answer, patterned to the NCC National Team which was successful before (I just can't find that old article, if I find it I'll post it here). my point is, they created a long term program, why all of a sudden they need to press the emergency button every now and then? the answer is, they will always and forever need PBA players. they can't form a team without any involvement from the PBA. Noli Eala tried but eventually he realized that their players can't do it on their own. Add to that the issues that this team faced along the way (delayed salaries, changes on naturalized player, players joining the PBA etc.). This is a sign that this program is not well planned, not that organized and has a goal but doesn't know how to achieve it..

lastly, my point on letting Ginebra play in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup is just to picture what SBP could also do since they are distrupting the PBA by borrowing players for Smart Gilas, something that they initially thought they wouldn't do.. if they will just do it from time to time, it would be better to suspend the whole conference.. anyway, being a Ginebra fan, hope you would respect my faith on this team if given that chance to join any international competitions.. I know my basketball and history will tell you what these underdogs can do..

I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY TOROMAN IS STILL QUIET ABOUT THIS ISSUE. HE SHOULD INSIST HIS STAND ABOUT THIS AS HE WAS SAYING BEFORE HE NEED PLAYERS FROM PBA WHO IS WILLING TO SACRIFICE FOR THE SAKE OF GILAS TEAM.CHOT REYES DONT UNDERSTAND WHY TOROMAN WANTED HIS PLAYER TO BE IN FULL TIME WITH GILAS WITHOUT DISTRACTION AND COMMITMENT TO OTHERS.IF JIMMY AND KELLY WILL PLAY FOR BOTH TEAMS ITS THE SAME MISTAKE THAT TOROMAN MADE DURING ASIAN GAMES. SO IF JIMMY AND KELLY CAN NOT COMMIT THEMSELVES TO GILAS THEN TOROMAN SHOULD START LOOKING FOR THEIR REPLACEMENT.IN KELLYS POSITION THERES JAY WASH AND JOE DEVANCE TO FILL IN.BUT THE PROBLEM IS IF TNT DONT ALLOW THEIR PLAYERS TO LET GO FOR THE MOMENT WHAT MORE FOR OTHER TEAMS. SO FOR ME KUME SALUD IS VERY GOOD IN HIS STAND ITS UNFAIR FOR AIR 21 AND MERALCO TEAM WHO HAVE READILY RELEASE THEIR PLAYER AFTER 2ND CONFERENCE.TUMPAK KUME.TO TNT DONT DESTROY OTHER TEAMS TRUST TO EACH OTHER.USAPAN IS USAPAN MAGPAKA LALAKE KYO.LALO NA SYO MR CHOT REYES KUNG ANU ANU PA SINASAGOT MU.DIRECT TO THE POINT KA DPAT HINDI PLAYING SAFE PERO ANG INTENTION IS TO HAVE THEM IN YOUR CAMPAIGN FOR GRANDSLAM.WORD OF HONOR MR CHOT.ITS ASHAME KINUHA KA PA NMN NA ASSISTANT COACH TAPOS SARCASTIC AND HYPOCRTE KA SA MGA STATEMENTS MU.

so this is it, well comm. salud has the right thing to do of not allowing alapag and williams to play for the texters and vye for a third crown. coach toroman has already showed his interest for the two players(alapag and williams) long before they became the champions, and they replied it's anh honor? the hell now......thanks to GOD we have a just commissioner on the person of chito salud, good job sir i salute you for your valiant comment about this matter, stay strong and always defend what is right and FAIR!
#10 gogilas on 2011-05-18 00:04 (Reply)
i do hope what commish salud says is done. sana sa gilas na lang talaga yung dalawang players.

As for the not needing pba players part, i believe only one guy said that - the X-SBP head, Noli Eala - who now is with the SMC group (goodluck guys!) - bestfriend rin pala ni jaemark. and as we all know he's full of shit. so don't take too much into what he says. :)

#12 exboywonder on 2011-05-18 10:06 (Reply)
totally agree that Carey's tweet is very unpatriotic. consider this, TnT players get huge bonuses when they win championships (last time was 500k+++) so what more if they win the grandslam. flag or money? hmmmm. let's be realistic here, for outsiders like us it's a no-brainer- it's very easy to say that we'll choose flag- but when we are already in that situation maybe we'll think otherwise, sayang ang pera e (we all have families to feed). being a gilas player wont pay that well. as adler said "it is always easier to fight for one's principles than to live up to them".

But I'm an outsider and a pure blooded Pinoy who have lived here all my life so to those TnT players involved here's my message- "PAKYUKAYO" palibhasa puro kayo laki sa tate at half-half!
#12.1 peter on 2011-05-19 00:14 (Reply)
I used to root for the TNT, pretty curious to the fact that they have a legitimate shot at having a triplecrown but with this very unfortunate and unnationalistic tweet by carey, parang nagdadalawang isip na ako if i will still be cheering for them...too bad..naisip ko tuloy mainjured na lang sila lahat o kahit c carey lang para makarma sa kaswapangan nila. flag dapat higit pa sa lahat.. tsk tsk tsk...

ayaw ni harvey nun... pag pinahiram si kelly at jimmy, it means madadagdagan ang playing time nya... makakapaglaro sya ng mas mahaba unlike nung championship series sa ginebra... binangko! hahaha!

coach jolas has a point... this TNT team are still capable of winning triple crown... jimmy is gone but they got a 6'2" import that might be the court leader... rich alvarez can now prove that he is a rookie of the year winner while kelly is gone... and coach chot is still around... this team can still win... and gilas has improved chances with PBA players on deck... WIN-WIN situation...
#14 too bad on 2011-05-19 16:18 (Reply)
While not on the same level as Alaska's sacrifice, Ginebra did something similar. After winning the 2007 All Filipino, Ginebra lost the chance to win the 2nd and last conference by loaning it's 3 best players to the national squad. Caguioa, Helterbrand, and Menk joined the team. Hatfield would have been the 4th, but he begged off and went back to the US during the next conference. After losing their top players, their remaing best player was either Macapagal or Tubid.
I just don't see why TNT can't give up JA and KW. They still have a way stacked line-up with Ranidel, RRyes, Jason Castro, Peek, Carey, Larry.
#14.1 chommy on 2011-05-19 17:32 (Reply)
maybe carey doesn't trust the leadership capabilities of the people left behind when alapag and williams leave for gilas.
#15 The Derby Ace King on 2011-05-26 20:07 (Reply)
Nice sacrifice, but even if they don't join Gilas, TNT will not win the triple crown this season, now since they will join let me tell you this: Gilas won't accomplish anything, it will not win anything, it's a total waste of time and effort, Gilas compared to other Asian teams? it's like asking a 7 year old kid to go out in the middle of a war, it's suicide, Gilas is doomed to be slaughtered, they'll be eaten alive.

The last real Phil team already made their mark, and that's the 98 Centennial team, all we have now are children. Bring them back to college please.
