Talk N Text survives Ginebra in game 6 epic to win 2011 PBA Commissioner’s Cup

Talk N Text 2011 Commissioner's Cup champions

Manny Pangilinan and his Talk N Text Tropang Texters really would have wanted to close out its best-of-seven PBA Commissioner’out last Friday. The problem with winning last night was that Manny Pacquiao was fighting earlier in the day, which meant that news of Talk N Text’s second straight title would be buried under the headlines of the pound-for-pound king’s victory.

But Jong Uichico and his gallant Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings would have none of it. If they weren’t winning the championship, they sure as hell wouldn’t roll over even against the mighty Tropang Texters. Talk N Text knew throughout the series that they were in a fight, just as I predicted in my preview of the series, Ginebra put out an effort worthy of their fans’ support. Each game in this series was played with tons of pride from both sides, and the series made the PBA richer just by virtue of how well both teams competed.

When I spoke to Coach Chot last January shortly after the team won the Philippine Cup, he said that he was surprised that the two rookie coaches he went up against in the playoffs – Ato Agustin of San Miguel and Jorge Gallent of B-MEG Derby Ace – didn’t go with more out-of-the-box tactics against him, instead choosing to go the conventional route.

That wasn’t an issue in this series, with Jong Uichico going into his full bag of tricks to try to rattle Talk N Text and its superior lineup. From playing rookies Rob Labagala and John Wilson extensively to dusting off bench guys like JC Intal and Eric Menk, who weren’t used much in the semifinals, Uichico kept throwing shit against the wall to see what stuck. And while some moves were more effective than others – I’m sure Ginebra fans had nightmares last night of Menk’s jump hooks clanging off the back rim and killing them at 120kph – it took Talk N Text out of its comfort zone enough to give the Gin Kings a fighting chance.

Meanwhile, Talk N Text sets its sights on a Grand Slam, the first since Alaska achieved the feat in 1996. Despite having to play with a handicap in the Governor’s Cup – as one of the top four teams, the Texters will be allowed to hire an import with a maximum height of 6’2” – not to mention possibly losing Jimmy Alapag and Kelly Williams to the Smart Gilas team that will compete in the 2011 Fiba-Asia Championship, Talk N Text still has to be considered the favorites for the season-ending tournament. That team is just that damn good.

TWEET NI HARVEY CAREY:(@ManilaBlack4):

TNTnation, if you don't want @JAlapag3 and @silentkels to play for Gilas, please RT.

Very unpatriotic naman nito.

Gilbert Lao is the Dickie Bachman 3000! He just sits his ass on the bench and he's a champion.

Manny Pangilinan now lords it over all other sports Patrons as Ateneo, San Beda & now TnT are all champion squads. His next mission is probably to get Meralco competitive in a year or 2 & have his own version of the MVP cup in the PBA.

Congratulations to MVP.

MVP has long been DANDING 2.0 ..... just less of the corruption & doesnt have student fans beaten-up.

MERALCO is already competitive ..... contender-status even! Cant even remember when a new franchise was this strong so early in it's existence.

MERALCO got 2 of the top shotmakers in the league, they have arguably the league's best center & a complete cast of very decent veterans.

No reason why MERALCO cant make the quarterfinals ....... nga pala, si Ryan Gregorio nga pala ang coach.

Ryan Gregorio holds the world record for having the thinnest basketball playbook ever.

a fan can be beaten up..... in the bed room. lol

o, btw, you may be too young to remember Purefoods and then Tanduay (with Menk and Alvarado, then DDH and Hatfield). They were far stronger than Meralco and they had stronger opponents then.

Nope, I'm an oldtimer ....... hehe (was present for the PBA debut of one Billy ray Bates ..... that old).

PUREFOODS was indeed one of those instant contender teams .... same with TANDUAY.

However, these 2 teams was mostly made up of raw & young talents ..... they were exposed during their initial semis & finals stints.

PUREFOODS had to go through numerous wars against veteran teams prior to winning that 1st one (was also present for their 1st chip) ...... TANDUAY meanwhile was exposed bigtime by an aging SHELL team.

This MERALCO team is built to win now ..... Cardona & Mercado are in their absolute prime ..... Asi is still among the top bigmen ..... Hugnatan, Omolon, Ritualo & a motivated Aquino definitely know how to win it all ...... Espinas, Isip are very decent forwards ..... Ross' game is improving well.

MVP pouring money into MERALCO has made it into instant contenders ...... management just needs to realize that coaching & speech-making are two different things ...... Gregorio sure knows how to make those fine speeches.
