Solar screws Pinoy basketball fans, pulls Basketball TV out of Global Destiny Cable

This weekend, basketball fans subscribed to Global Destiny Cable were shocked to find that Basketball TV was no longer part of their channel line-up. The cable company announced that Solar, which owned the channel, had signed an exclusive deal with their competitor, which everyone took to mean Sky Cable, the country’s biggest CATV provider. It’s a curious turn of events given the history involving Solar, Sky, Destiny, and BTV.

In 2007, Solar Entertainment Corporation had a falling out with Sky, which at the time was broadcasting six Solar channels: BTV, Solar Sports, Jack TV, Crime/Suspense, ETC, and 2nd Avenue. Reports differed on the reason of the rift between the entertainment companies; some said that it had to do with Manny Pacquiao – Solar, which owned the rights, chose as its broadcast partner GMA-7, the biggest rival of Sky Cable’s owner, ABS-CBN – while others Sky simply wanted to drop some of Solar’s channels in favor of its own.

Solar moved quickly to prepare for its departure from the Sky lineup on the first day of 2008. The company signed block time deals so that three of their channels – C/S (on RPN-9), ETC (on SBN-21), and 2nd Avenue (on RJ-29) – were broadcast over free television. Their three other channels, BTV, Solar Sports, and Jack TV, became available exclusively on Destiny.

With the new setup, Solar used an all-out campaign to get subscribers to switch from Sky to Destiny. Jude Turcuato, the marketing director of Solar Sports who had since left the company, led the media blitz to promote the move. (Curiously, my two “favorite” writers Quinito Henson and Krip Yuson both wrote extensively about the issue for the Philippine Star.)

And the campaign worked. Sky bled subscribers who were moving to Destiny, so much so that less than a year later, the leading cable company had to sign a truce with Solar to bring back BTV to its lineup, first as a premium channel, then later as a regular channel.

Part of it was the fact that subscribers really wanted the programs that were available on the Solar channels, particularly the NBA games on BTV. But another factor was that Sky Cable had acted like a bully in its treatment of Solar during the whole brouhaha, and subscribers – especially those who hung out online – were only too happy to make the switch to give the cable giant a bit of comeuppance. It really was the loyalty of those subscribers that allowed Solar to win over Sky Cable.

Things cooled down substantially between ABS-CBN and Solar in the years that followed. Then earlier this year, the two companies signed a major deal to that allowed PBA and NBA games to be aired over Studio 23, ABS-CBN’s UHF channel.

Then this weekend, BTV’s exclusivity deal with Sky was announced. A brief official announcement was posted on the BTV website about the expiration of the channel’s contract with Destiny, together with a bullshit marketing line about how subscribers should instead pony up cash to pay for the company’s premium NBA package.

To Solar, this was probably just another in a long line of business decisions. To basketball fans who were shocked by the move, however, it comes as a slap in the face from Solar, the company that encouraged them to switch all those years ago, and the company that they supported loyally.

In the end, it won’t matter to Solar, which obviously only cares about the bottom line. The company won’t be affected at all, because NBA fans are always going to jones for NBA games, we can’t help ourselves but fork over cash to watch Pacquiao fights, and Solar has cleverly signed exclusive deals to deliver these properties.

So this may be meaningless, but I just wanted to write this for the record, because it needs to be said, that the people running Solar are assholes, and the subscribers who bailed them out all those years ago don’t deserve this.

Or this might mean that people who can afford to pay for an nba league pass account will.

hay naku. okay, no, i won't switch. i'm good with global destiny. kesehodang walang BTV. as if sa BTV lang pwede manood ng NBA.

The Celtics-Heat game yesterday was aired on ABS-CBN at 8 am and was replayed on Studio 23 last night.

S23 is now airing the Bulls-Hawks game.

I am so dissapointed in Solar.
This came as a shock to me. I was watching the replay of the baranggay Ginebra finals game then suddenly at 12 AM, the channel goes offline and tells me to call some number and avail of the new Premium package they are offering,

What a disgrace.
And they timed it so sneakily in the playoffs so that avid basketball fans would surely shell out cash just to watch these games.

What a joke. I switched to Destiny (from SKY) less than a year ago so that I could watch BTV and Jack TV. And now this shit happens? What the fuck? This is complete bullshit. I'm locked up with Destiny for the next couple of years which means I have no other option than to stick with Destiny or order their NBA Premium Channel that is ridiculously expensive. Putangina lang talaga ng Solar.

Imagine if ESPN (or ABC or TNT for that matter) got removed in the States. What if the US' NUMBER 2 MOST SUBSCRIBED CHANNEL (like Destiny here) deprived its subscribers/customers of Nba coverage IN THE FUCKING MIDDLE OF THE PLAYOFFS with the only way of watching it is paying extra money? Can you imagine how huge the riot would be? Can you imagine how much lawsuits would the cable company and the mother corporation (in this case SOLAR) would receive?

I remember being a sky-cable subscriber 3 years ago who suddenly got deprived of Nba coverage (BTV). As Jaemark said, Destiny and Solar teamed up and marketed BTV and JackTV as the main advantage of being with Destiny. They sure did convince a lot of people like me. Now that I've switched, Solar removes it and goes back to Sky. Wow. Just wow. Amazing how this type of shit easily passes through here in the Philippines. TWICE. If this was in another country, both Solar and Destiny would get crushed by all the lawsuits coming in.

In the States, Solar would be sued by the NBA for doing that -- changing cable providers.

Speaking of... WTF with the btv's extensive marketing of Jinno and Riki - we don't watch btv bcoz of their segments! Also, what happened to Lia? She was really good

Lia is now with TV5 and Aksyon TV where she does the news.

Jaemark, this move by Solar is very disgusting. This company had good relations with Destiny Cable until Wilson Tieng suddenly did an about-face and signed the exclusive deal with Sky.

I have a feeling that Tieng is losing money and his tie-up with ABS for the NBA is his best way to recoup his lost investments with the PBA TV coverage while also maintaining his company's contract with the NBA.

Jude Turcuato, who lobbied for Solar to cover the PBA, is gone, which further ruined the credibility of Tieng's company.

I also have a feeling that Solar is slowly paving the way for ABS-CBN to take over the PBA coverage rights next season once its contract with the league expires.

Jaemark, I hope you tackle the PBA TV bidding in one of your future posts.

sana pinatapos na lang muna nila yung nba finals bago sila lumipat. pangit yung biglaan eh. parang nang iwan sa ere. they should change their name from solar sports to solar sucks!
#12 James Ty III on 2011-05-03 10:05 (Reply)
I think Destiny should get other channels like AXN, Cinemax, Star Movies, Star World and Animax to make up for BTV's loss. Those channels have nice programs.
#13 asar on 2011-05-03 14:33 (Reply)
Tangina talaga ang solar (at destiny din)

una sneaky ang announcement na biglaan.

tapos timing pa sa nba playoffs

tapos kung oorder ka ng nba premium channel for 150/month, di puede tingi--kailangan 1 or 2 year contract advance payment... e patapos na ang nba season in about a month, tapos baka nba lockout pa next season, kaya wala kang mapapanood ng games for several months

tapos kailangan pa ata ng digibox na baka may dagdag na cost pa rin

masusumbong ba kaya ito sa dti?

salamat jaemark sa artikulong ito

Maybe Solar Corp has no other options but to kiss the ass of the people who, of all the networks in the country, they don't really wanna make deals with. But I guess they had to do it just to keep their ship floating. Kapit sa patalim. Hawak ng ABS-CBN ang Solar sa leeg.

Me and my evil theories.
#14.1 James Ty III on 2011-05-03 19:06 (Reply)
Solar had no choice but to tie up with ABS. Nahihirapan silang kumita with the PBA on Channel 9 which is now ETC.
#15 Bad Timing on 2011-05-03 17:51 (Reply)
I think that the NBA should stipulate in their contract with Solar, that their coverage should not be exclusive to one cable provider. The NBA with all it's pull should be able to do this if it was really interested in their fans happy.
#16 jorge paule on 2011-05-05 21:26 (Reply)
totally disgusting. Not just solar screwing basketball fans, but also skycable screwing subscribers. We have sky in pasay for 1thou a month, and i have a local cable here in batangas for 400php which has more channels than f'n sky cable. F sky with all their bs! They even have a select package but you cant select the other channels!
#17 Nats on 2011-05-07 07:56 (Reply)
I can't help but express my disgust on this move by solar also. I won't switch to skycable though because it's run by greedy people who bleed their subscribers wallets. I am so disappointed with solar for kissing greedy people's asses just for additional profit.

To think that this year's playoff is one of the most interesting in recent years...So disgusting!
