Top Rank offers Juan Manuel Marquez October bout versus Manny Pacquiao

Juan Manuel Marquez vs Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao will be stepping into the ring against Shane Mosley in less than two weeks, but his promoter, Top Rank, has already potentially lined up the next opponent for the pound-for-pound champ: Juan Manuel Marquez.

Dan Rafael of ESPN reports that “a formal, written offer” has been sent by Bob Arum’s outfit to the Marquez camp for a third fight against Pacquiao if the latter is victorious against Mosley. Golden Boy Promotions, whose promotional contract with Marquez expired recently, still owns the right to match any offer made to the Mexican fighter, and confirmed the receipt of a copy of the offer to Marquez by Top Rank.

Marquez figured in two epic fights against Pacquiao. In 2004, he survived three knockdowns in the first round to force a draw against the Filipino pugilist. In their 2008 rematch, Marquez lost a razor-thin split decision to Pacquiao.

Manny Pacquiao has since gone on to international superstardom with victories over Oscar de la Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Joshua Clottey, and Antonio Margarito. Juan Manuel Marquez, meanwhile, still feels bitter about what he perceived to be bum decisions against him in the Pacquiao fights, and has since been on a Captain Ahab-like quest to forge a third duel against Pac-Man.

But Marquez’s efforts have been hampered by the squabbles between Top Rank, which promotes Pacquiao, and Golden Boy, the two biggest boxing promotions which had been involved in a “cold war”. Since the De la Hoya fight, Top Rank’s Arum has only placed Pacquiao in bouts against boxers who are not promoted by Golden Boy, leaving Marquez out of the loop.

Curiously, Pacquiao’s opponent, Shane Mosley, used to have a promotional contract with Golden Boy as well, apart from being part-owner of the company. But Sugar Shane was able to sign a deal to fight Pacquiao after cutting ties with Golden Boy and declaring himself a free agent. The message seems crystal clear for Marquez: the Pacquiao fight is his if he wants it.

Much has changed since the two fighters last faced each other; Pacquiao has grown much bigger and much better, while Marquez, even though he has shown signs of age, has stayed in the pound-for-pound rankings, mostly by eschewing his technical style and becoming more of a brawler.

But I’d probably be more interested in this fight for Pacquiao than just about any other realistic opponent save for Floyd Mayweather; it’s not just style that makes fights, there’s also simmering bitterness and resentment, which Marquez has carried with him through the years.

Manny Pacquiao vs Shane Mosley thoughts
MANNY PACQUIAO, the best fighter in the world, will win his match against Shane Mosley this Sunday. I’m not really going out of a limb with my prediction; at 39, Sugar Shane is past his prime, and in fact hasn’t been impressive in the last 22 or so ro

amanos sila kaya itong pangatlo, kung matutuloy, ang deciding factor. pareho ng pacquiao-morales series, kailangan talaga ng pangatlong laban dahil parehong kontrobersiyal ang mga ito.

Pacquiao will walk through Marquez.

at least the mexican has the guts to call out pacquiao. unlike that chicken we know. :p

and seriously, i want Pacquiao to knock Marquez out to shut him up once and for all. hehe

I agree. A convincing win by Pacquiao over Marquez should be enough to send the latter into retirement.

It's easy to discount JMM in this match specially if the fight will be at 147. However, JMM really knows how to fight Pacquiao. He never leads with a jab, he always begins his attacks with lead rights. He also times his uppercut perfectly. JMM can still cause some headaches for Pacquiao. As Freddie Roach said, if these two fought ten times, all of the fights will be close.

Should be a fun match. I hope GBP does not match the offer but since JMM is by far their biggest star, I feel they would.

Golden Boy can't match the offer because they can't offer Pacquiao ;) so like i said in my post, if JMM wants this, it's his.
#5 Carlo on 2011-04-26 15:45 (Reply)
What GBP can do is to offer JMM the same amount of money or more to make him stay with them. It will be stupid for GBP to let JMM go for nothing. He can make some money against Zab Judah with the winner facing the winner of Khan-Bradley. But I guess you're right. At the end of the day, it will be JMM's decision to make.

Hey - speaking of Marquez- Pacquiao, Plaigarism and stuff (topics in FQ). Have you seen the latest article of Quiniton himself in Philstar.com. seems like a cut and paste article, Mr Q. quoted an article posted on some website- it's for you to see.

IMO, the fighters who could give Pacman a good fight are: Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales, Nonito Donaire. Lighter fighters, not aging welterweights.

This should be a great fight... a trilogy with Marquez will end all talks and this is much better than Mayweather fight.

I just took a Philippine culture class and we talked about Pacquiao. After reading more about this fighter he is an amazing fighter. I look forward to see him fight.
