Presenting the Patay Ang Butiki web show

This is the premiere episode of Patay Ang Butiki, a new web show that will be appearing regularly on Fire Quinito. The show is produced by brothers Niko and Mikkel Bolante of Patay Ang Butiki.

In episode one, Niko and Mikkel are joined by ABS-CBN sportscaster Toff Rada and me to look deep into the woes of the San Miguel franchise.

Niko and Mikkel have kicked around the idea of producing a web show about basketball for more than a year now. We were trying very hard not to duplicate the stuff that’s already out there, including the excellent From the Stands podcast that also appears here on Fire Quinito.

So we came up with the idea of tackling only one topic, in-depth, for every show. For the first episode, we decided to take on San Miguel, but not just the big trade; we talk about the San Miguel fan culture, the management’s direction, the Petron name change, previous rebuilding efforts, and the Beermen’s deep history.

This was actually our test episode, and while it’s far, far from being perfect, we were proud that we came up with it through our DIY methods and with no budget at all. Niko is the MVP of this production, doing everything from re-mastering the audio to editing the video.

So while it’s not much now, we’re hoping to get better at this, and we’re excited that it opens up the possibility for all kinds of video-related projects. Reports? Documentaries? All of those are fair game.

Toff, a San Miguel fan who came all decked out in his “San Miguel assistant coach Art de la Cruz” outfit, is the star of the first show. It’s not much of a surprise, considering he’s a professional broadcaster, but also because back in high school, he was always the champion of our extemporaneous speech competitions at Pisay. He and I also ran a pretty mean pick-and-pop back then for III-Mg.

UPDATE: You can also now listen to the show as a podcast.

wow, what can I say, ang galing ng analysis ng SMB franchise from Ron Jacobs era until now. It's like you guys captured the essence and the problems that surround this franchise now (I like the references to fantasy teams, and Olsen Racela outlasting all of his "successors" - from Victoria, Lopez, Tenorio, Cablay, Denok, Jonas V, Artadi, Cortez, Cabagnot - and how the Belasco-Asaytono worked compared to the recent trade that happened).

ang problema ata is the management itself right now, they don't know which team they want to build. look at Talk 'n Text, Rain or Shine, or Alaska. They acquire players who can fit their system, and not just because of their names (even that is happening right now with Ginebra). Even the coaches are at the mercy of the management (Tanquincen fiasco).

While they have former players having roles in the corporation right now, wouldn't it be nice as well to retire their numbers? it's long overdue.

Nga pala, prior to the 2009 championship, SMB won too in 2005 Fiesta. That was probably the last, best year of Danny Seigle.

Looking forward to more web-shows. Podcast na rin kayo para madownload ko to mp3 hehe.

last, little comment: at least with the changing of the name from SMB to Petron, we can get rid of that fugly 2001 SMB jersey too :p fugly jersey applies to current Ginebra jersey as well.

This is kinda off topic, but anyway...

The upset of Alaska by Air21 earlier is probably the best PBA game I have seen in ages. I know everyone has their own favorite PBA moment or game( Future topic for FireQuinito?)
But the way Air 21 pounded on the hapless Aces was really delightful. I have no ax to grind with the Alaska Aces and I really hated the trade with Seagle, Hontiveros and Co.

Still I truly enjoyed watching this game as it was totally inspiring and unpredictable.

The game should have been in Alaska's clutches, it was their's to lose. Nobody could have seen Air 21 winning the best of 3 series. Or maybe even survive the elimination.

Even after the big trade, the morale of Air21 was down. Public scrutiny was very heavy and word is the franchise will be sold soon.

Still, the Air 21 played a hell of a game.

Bangura gets my nod for best import, he has inspired his team to play with nothing to lose. Game 2 was his biggest game so far and game three he was kinda struggling as the Alaska defense focused on stopping this import.

But no matter, thanks to this guy, Josh Urbiztondo.
Urbiztondo was unconscious from the three point line in the 3rd quarter that gave Air21 the big cushion they need to eke out the victory. Almost all their important players scattered much needed points to beat the Aces. And it was just enough to ensure that Air 21 will face TnT in the semis.

It has been a long time that a lowly, "conduit" team reached the semis. The line up of Air 21 should have been depleted and demoralized. But no matter, they beat a powerhouse in Alaska and clearly overachieved, defying all the odds. This in my opinion is what makes this such a classic game.

if your not a die hard alaska fan, that's a very good game.

Great first episode guys, just one thing though can you do the second episode indoors? So that you can filter the unneeded noise in the background.
#5.1 jaemark on 2011-04-14 15:14 (Reply)
yeah, the audio's really a big concern in the production too.
#6 AKO on 2011-04-14 09:58 (Reply)
Great show! excellent observation with SMb having fewer fans than alaska during the finals 2 finals ago, I think the problem with this team is they dont have players that stay with the team long enough where fans can associate...kung baga it should be where players become the team it self and vice versa. I feel thats how you attract fans and diehards.
I agree with this groups assessment that this team needs some sense of direction. get some role players and improve on their speed because as long as TnT is playing the way they are now, I dont think SMB will be champions again unless they improve on defense, ball movement and speed. well, atleast I read from snow badua that coach ato will try to change smb into a running and a defensive team. then again, that was his paln when he started out with smb, wala rin nangyari!

I also think that their are only 3 players in the storied franchise of smb that has always attracted the fans, yung tinatawag palang nayayanig na ang astrodome. these players are SAMBOY LIM, DANNY S, and finally the great JOEY MENTE! :)

I hope smb trades arwind and yeo or tugade(should he not return to redbull), use baclao and guevarra more and improve on speed, ball movement and defense. I hope they stop being boring and mediocre again!

bakit parang walang credibility ang mga panelist?

though what u mentioned were very factual bakit para kayong mga college students lang na nag-uusapusap? nasa tambayan.. etc... u know what i mean?

sana walang maoffend. constructive lang mga bro!
#7.1 PbaFanB on 2011-04-14 14:48 (Reply)
hearing what they said gives them credibility. ano pong gusto niyo? si Mico Halili at si Quinito Henson na kung anu-ano naman ang sinasabi? Plus for hardcore internet readers, these guys have credibility. the patayangbutiki blog i think is a very intellectual basketball blog that not many appreciate.
#7.1.1 lexcorpar on 2011-04-14 15:23 (Reply)
2 things sir.

credibility in fact and credibility in person are two different things.

i acknowledged in my post that they have credibility in fact because their discussions were very factual. only that "PARANG" walang credibility in person ung panelist kc they look like college students na nag-uusap-usal lang sa tambayan nila.

hope i answered your complex query.

ser Jae, next time po, pick a better set...better table.. better chairs,it's not good to see your legs, observe proper posture.. para po kasi kayong nag-iinuman lang at nagkukuwentuhan...look at the camera when you are addressing the audience...much better kung may close-up if it is your turn to speak...
#8.1.1 jaemark on 2011-04-14 14:54 (Reply)
the better set, better tables, and close-up shots (which needs extra cameras) require budget, which we don't have, unfortunately.
#9 Jimmy on 2011-04-14 21:40 (Reply)
@Lex

We would love to see you on the next episode so that we could appreciate your intellect as well. At the same time maybe we can then judge you if you're credible or not.

i thought about it last night and i think i cant be in that show as well.

not that i dont have credibility in fact but i may be the same with these guys na "PARANG" walang credibility in person.

un lang.

constructive lang un mga bro!

sensitive naman kau masyado.

si jaemark nga e no comment lang kc he may be pondering my observation.

Seigle broke patrimonio's record in 2006, the most number of consecutive 20+ pts in a game, 20 straight..
after that, and chot's short stint, came the non stop trading every conference that messed up their team during tanquincen's term. he also benched players and some didnt get the minutes that couldve made the Beermen better. DS and DI were tasked to play role because of SMB's penchant for getting any and all the best players of opposing teams they can get their hands on. Half the players in that squad burned that bench waiting for their turn/chance to play. practically ruining their careers.
btw,who trades a finals mvp in jonas right after they win a championship? and how about pingris who also just won a championship for santos who obviously is not doing it for SMB in 2 finals as he seems to just keep on choking. he obviously doesnt compliment jwash and vice versa, and the LA(siot's biggest blunder) not to mention (enrico, larry etc etc)trade? man, the people running that team have no idea what they are doing and havent for a long time. trading players is their favorite past time. this franchise slowly went downhill when jacobs fell ill. there has been no direction and system.

Ako, walang problema kung nasa outdoors sila at mukhang college kids na nag kwe-kwentuhan sa tambayan. it gives them the aura of being grounded and not trying to be know-it-alls. basta kaya nila panindigan yung mga opinions nila, ok yun. they don't have to be in suits and ties in a studio to give insightful opinions. para sa akin nga, may ok sana kung magtagalog sila instead of english. kung ako yung drector, i would give them some beer and just shoot the breeze as if there was no camera filming them. parang inuman ng barkada and discussing bball.
#11.1 jaemark on 2011-04-14 22:52 (Reply)
funny you mentioned that. we really had wanted to be drinking beer while taping, but we had to tape on a weekday, and I had to go to work after, so deyns pwede uminom.
#11.1.1 CHUCKD on 2011-04-15 00:12 (Reply)
probably not a good idea for this episode anyway. baka akalain ng iba, sellout kayo kung San Miguel Beer ang iniinom nyo while discussing the San Miguel franchise. hahaha. Although critical of the San Miguel management naman yung opinion nyo kaya ok lang rin siguro.
