So what’s a Yeng Guiao game against Smart Gilas without a little controversy?

Rain or Shine Elastopainters

The last time a team coached by Yeng Guiao played Smart Gilas in a PBA tournament, back in the 2009-2010 Philippine Cup, Air 21 point guard Wynne Arboleda ended up assaulting a Gilas fan at courtside in a very ugly incident in a rough-and-tumble game. So when Guiao’s new team, Rain or Shine, faced off against the Gilas squad last Sunday, many fans were also expecting fireworks.

It didn’t come as much of a surprise that Rain or Shine’s Ryan Araña, a hardnosed guard, was somehow involved in the hostilities. During his college days at La Salle, Ateneo coach Norman Black compared Araña favorably to Ginebra icon Robert Jaworski. Explicitly, the multi-titled mentor was talking about the former Archer’s toughness, but people who followed the game closely picked up on the hint that the parallels between the two players extended to their rough, even dirty, playing style.

Araña was involved in a scuffle against naturalized center Marcus Douthit, who claims that he was hit in the groin. Later, Araña was called for a double-technical with Gilas guard Chris Lutz.

“Lutz was trash-talking with Ronjay (Buenafe) and our bench,” Araña later told Snow Badua. “Ako lang ang gumanti.”

The RoS guard added that the incident started because Lutz dissed Guiao. “Binabastos niya si Coach Yeng,” he said. “Siyempre, babanat kami, pero ‘di ako nagsimula nun. Saka ‘di ko gagawin yun, mahirap ma-suspend.”

Another source from the Elastopainters chimed in, telling Badua, “Niyabangan at ni-trash talk ni Lutz ang bench namin. Pati si Coach Yeng, binastos. Pinapasampolan nga siya. Buti nga, ‘di na siya binalik.”

But a source who attended the game paints quite a different picture. “During the game, in the first half alone, Araña would throw elbows at Douthit whenever he cut in front of the big guy,” he wrote in an email. “Worse, before the first half ended, he threw a low blow to Marcus which the refs finally caught, although they only called a personal foul.”

The source also wrote that it wasn’t Chris Lutz who started thing with the Rain or Shine bench. “Minumura siya nina Araña at Buenafe during the game,” he continued. “I think when Larry Rodriguez was called for an illegal screen in the third quarter, Lutz started clapping as he was running back on offense. That’s what escalated things even more, as they cursed him more. Si Araña raw, lumapit sa bench ng Gilas and according to those sitting behind Lutz, even five rows back, sabi kay Lutz, ‘Fuck you Chris Lutz, I’m waiting for you inside!’ Tapos binalikan pa after, kaya na-double technical sila.”

Then again, the stuff that happened last Friday are probably no longer in the minds of Guiao or the rest of the Rain or Shine squad, as they have now dropped three straight losses after posting three wins to open their Commissioner’s Cup campaign. But if Smart Gilas and Rain or Shine do end up meeting in the playoffs… boy, that would be something, wouldn’t it?

you can foul hard a player but not to the extent of ending his basketball-playing career and threaten his life in the process.

Napanood mu ba ung larong un pre? Nakita ko kasi un and feel sorry for the man but I didn't think anybody tried to hurt him.
Maybe we should ask Coach Tim ano version niya para malinaw.hehe

I was at the game the other day.My seat was pretty near the bench of ROS.Giao was cursing the whole time.He was calling Douthit "fucking idiot", and all sorts of other F...cks to Lutz and the others. At the moment with Lutz, that was already described, the whole bench was cursing, not only Giao but his assistants and players also.
I'm asking, where is this society going? This politician is instructing players to hit and provoce other players! A Philipino goes against Philipino! God help us,if he becomes someone in politics! On the other hand, this showes his inferiority with basketball knowledge. If you need a fist on the bolls of opponent players to win the game,is further comment necessary?
Arana as the leader of his "special unit",before the game announced that he'll do what he did.My question is-WHAT THE COMMISSIONER DID STOP THIS? iT SEEMS THAT YOU CAN MAKE OPEN TREATS IN THIS COUNTRY WITHOUT ANY CONSEQUENCES!

I was at Araneta when Gilas went up against Alaska. I was sitting a few feet away from Fred Uytensu. I heard Mr. Fred was shouting at Marcus Doughit " Go home you b1tch! We are not naturalizing you! " hahaha

This tournament is clearly not working out. Only Gilas fielded a legitimate big man in Douthit. The PBA should have allowed a no limit height for imports that should negate the big advantage of Gilas. Smaller imports though very skilled and entertaining simply cannot compete with a legitimate big man. Most local centers like Thoss, K. Raymundo, Taulava, Penisi are no match for the much better Douthit. Without that guy, Gilas would just be a slightly above average team in the PBA, but not an elite. Douthit is killing all the teams Gilas has faced off the boards. This should be an easy tournament for them. No surprise they are 5-0.
#13.1 manny pacquiao on 2011-03-23 00:38 (Reply)
even without marcus i think smart gilas can still be 5-0 if they can do good internationally without import against team with more than 2 imports what more in the pba?

ballesteros would kill them all! many people think this guy is not for real because he has no playing time but if given a playing time im sure he would do wonders like what he did in dubai.

Gilas is good and there's no doubt about it. I am excited to see SG vs BGK. I wonder what will be the reaction of gilas players if Tubid started to guard them 1 by 1.

Puro kasi purma ang laro, go to your basic basketball,
#19 sirjhay on 2011-03-23 23:32 (Reply)
i don't know...

the cursing might be another thing, but the physical play is quite what the gilas team needs. they entered the pba for the purpose of toughening themselves up for international competition (and maybe dominating the conference), and maybe that is what the team is getting right now from the teams, most notably rain or shine. if you try to evaluate the physical play of that game, that's not even a percent compared to, say for example, the gold medal match of US and Spain. Elbows were flying everywhere throughout that match. Now to get them ready for serious international play, they should be capable of talking shots (and at the same time give some back) to the opposing teams.

maybe the cursing is an additional motivation for the opposing teams. but again, it's a different thing to talk about.
#20 Jimbo 2.0 on 2011-03-24 09:45 (Reply)
This is basketball ..... last I looked, basketball was still a contact sport.

People should be thanking Guiao for that game .... that RoS game was rough & RoS played exceptional defense in the 1st half. This type of game would be the ideal preparation for international play, which has always been the goal of GILAS.

Funny that people raise a hoot & howl about Yeng Guiao ..... when there are far more heinous offenses in the PBA:

** Everyone & their mother knows that SMC & MVP teams exceed whatever salary cap/restrictions are existing - given their LOADED lineups.

** SMC & MVP teams using AIR21 & BARAKO as lackeys & milking-cows for player trades.

** SMB conveniently going PETRON next conference, just as PHOENIX is knocking on the door ..... smells fishy doesnt it.
#21 smb on 2011-03-24 11:15 (Reply)
Physical game in FIBA absolutely forbides elbows! This is intentional foul!!!! Also u cant use your hands and push a player. It's intentional foul. What we're talking about here is dirty playing.Fists, curses in FIBA almost doesn't exist, bec you'll not only get tehnical, but you'll be forbbiden to play several games.Use a fist, suspension of 6 months might happen. This is not a sport what u r promoting here.U r promoting bad behaviour! Very bad!!

However dirty Yeng Guiao's players are now, they still know how to do a wacky pose for the cameras.
