San Miguel to change its name to Petron

Fidel Mangonon III broke news on Twitter that PBA commissioner Chito Salud has approved the motion of San Miguel to change the team’s name to Petron Blaze. The move comes after the reported proposal by another petroleum company, Phoenix, to join the PBA.

Petron’s entry doesn’t mean that the Phoenix bid to join the PBA is dead; any transaction for a franchise sale would require two-thirds approval of the league’s board of governors (7 out of 10). Currently, San Miguel Corporation owns three seats in the board.

An interesting footnote to the move: Before joining the PBA as deputy commissioner last year, Salud served as an independent director in the Petron board for several years.

Curiously, the name change by San Miguel on the heels of its franchise-altering move to trade away longtime stars Danny Seigle, Dondon Hontiveros, and Dorian Peña, along with guard Paul Artadi, to Air 21 for the rookie crew of Nonoy Baclao, Rabeh Al-Hussaini, and Rey Guevarra, a move that did not sit well with longtime fans of the team. It’s easy to imagine how this move to change the name would alienate those fans even more.

I’m not sure if San Miguel management is just tone-deaf, or if they’re really going out of their way to antagonize their fan base. If that’s the case, they should just take it all the way by shooting bags of pee at San Miguel fans with those t-shirt cannons at the team’s next game.

hahaha SMC or at least SMB is now like a headless dog.
#2 jason on 2011-03-16 18:32 (Reply)
People r talking that the change should cover embarressing defeat from SG and trade that fans didn't like. With NEala in SMB,there;s more shit to come.

final na ung name change to petron noh... i dont like wishing ill on SMB because if anything bad happens to them, Purefoods/BMeg will bear the consequences coz we all know PF is the illegitimate child of SMC...

but what if the product of the next team to enter PBA is a beer (e.g. Colt 45, beer na beer, lonestar, etc)... pwde na kasi wala ng beer to compete with s PBA dba? edi nde na pwde bumalik ang SMB s PBA... karma to its fullest... hehe...

ika nga ni Lebron James: Karma is a b*tch!!

haay smc.. tsk tsk tsk!

it seems that these days, for smc, money > fans.
#6 yugin on 2011-03-16 23:28 (Reply)
as an SMB fan for years. i think it's better to change the name of the team because it is a completely different roster (minus danny I.). olsen retired, DH, Dorian and Danny S. gone. and nobody else seems to carry the character of a true -blooded Beerman. santos is a choker, jwash is soft, alex is overrated. and the others just don't fit.
#7 insider on 2011-03-16 23:31 (Reply)
not true. san miguel is buying air21 franchise, will name it petron. say goodbye to your pba hopes, phoenix. SMC = home of assholes!

SMB is really paying the price for tainting the league with dubious trades(buy ins, in reality). Gone are the days when they built the team from scratch and won a lot of championships. The current roster looks like a hodgepodge mix of players that are assembled to instantly win a championship which they failed to do. It is the best team money can buy. Unfortunately, buying talent and hoarding it to the brim won't guarantee success. It is hurting their legacy and worst of all the PBA in general. These lopsided trades are the worst thing that has happened since they are so common and vulgar. Worse than drug addiction problems, worse than in game fights, worse than game fixing. The league should do everything it can for the public to at least respect the PBA.

This is my prediction:
This scenario is probably made by Noli Eala. With Air 21,
S.Miguel is gonna have 4 teams in PBA. 4 teams!!!!!
Players from Smart Gilas are going on a draft. With 4 teams, most of them will end up there, and they will move them where they want to.This is the way he will take the players that Toroman made, and MVP paid!
HE REALLY IS A SICK BUSTARD! But they should keep in mind that KARMA is......!
#10 Envyder on 2011-03-17 16:51 (Reply)
@ansmb its up to MVP if he want to keep Gilas intact for another year? Siguro kaya kinuha si Noli E. ng SMC because of his planning expertise. SMC vs PLDT sa PBA abangan na lang natin.
#11 ansmb on 2011-03-17 17:54 (Reply)
Expertise?! Hahahahahahahahahahhahahahhahaha!
This is hilarious! Once again, what is he expert for? Is "expert" a new word for swindler?

Do you still remember when SMB was known as the Magnolia Beverage Masters earlier in the decade?
#13.1 workhorse3 on 2011-03-19 02:09 (Reply)
2008 dude. at least they were still a strong team then, reached until semis but was disloged by Thomas-led Air21.

There was a joke na in 1986 they were magnolia then they switched back to SMB in 1987, they started winning championships. Well it *almost* happened again when they changed their name back to SMB in 2009 - they got one championship and finals appearances. :p

honest to goodness, smb fans are so diappointed with the trade and lost interest in the team. worse, these fans are hoping that they skid even more so there will be further trades and even coaching staff change. I agree with the earlier post that smb players now are no longer carrying the legacy of a true beerman shaped by the likes of samboy lim and hector calma. washington though is trying his best to be tough, reminds me of pau during his first year with LA(maybe to some extent until now). I hope they can trade away their other stars and get some players that are fresh and can ran, because to be honest, it bores me to watch smb play. they cant ran, they cant shoot and most of all, they have a lethargic import( to think coach ato said they have a gem of an import). I hope Gee will take over the team soon.

pabagsak na team SMB. wala kwenta recent trade. parang displaced ung image ng players.

sana matalo pa SMB the rest of the conference and di makasali sa top six! whatta shame! from a championship contender the past 2 conferences to a losing, lousy contender!

eeeeiiiwwwww!

what makes me wonder is that this blog still actually writes about the league. its one horseshit of a league with all the moro-moro happening with a coach working for different teams all in one year? and they wonder why no network wants to cover them? this blog is probably the only reason why the league thinks it still matters.
