What’s next for the Azkals

With its 3-2 aggregate victory over Mongolia, the Philippine national football team moves to the qualifying group stage of the AFC Challenge Cup which will be held from March 21 to 25 in Yangon, Myanmar. In the same group are teams that are curiously ranked lower than the Philippines (#151) in the latest FIFA World Ranking: Bangladesh (#174), Palestine (#178), and the hosts (#161). The Mongolian team which the Azkals just defeated was ranked #183.

The Azkals will kick off the qualifying group stage against Myanmar on March 21 at 5PM Manila time. In the 2010 Suzuki Cup, the Philippines held the Burmese to a 0-0 draw, but the upcoming match figures to be a tougher outing. For one, the Philippines will continue to miss the services of goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, who is tied down by professional playing commitments in England. Etheridge was instrumental for the Azkals’ having held Myanmar scoreless last December. And of course, it’s always tough to play against the home team in any competition. Hopefully, the exciting new offense installed by coach Hans Michael Weiss is enough to offset the team’s defensive deficiencies.

(UPDATE: It looks like Etheridge just might make it to Myanmar in time for the games!)

The Philippines will play its next game on March 23, also at 5PM Manila time, against Palestine. The low rating of Palestine in international football has less to do with actual talent than it does with the circumstances of the team – and for that matter, the Palestinian state. In 2006, the team climbed up to as high as 115 in the world ranking; that same year, Palestine posted several impressive results, including a 2-2 draw against Asian powerhouse Iraq. The next year, however, tensions at home led to severe lack of preparation for the team – it actually trained without a manager for most of 2007. Problems with obtaining exit visas from the Israeli government have also forced the team to forfeit several international matches.

Nevertheless, things seem to be looking up for Palestinian football. Last week, it hosted the first competitive football match at home, the second leg of a tie against Thailand to qualify for the 2012 Olympics. Palestine had lost 1-0 in Bangkok, but rebounded with a 1-0 victory in Ram, a suburb of Jerusalem. Even then, Palestine was missing eight players who lived beyond the Gaza strip; they were denied permission to travel by Israeli authorities.

Unfortunately, the team lost, 6-5, in the penalty shootout. But it remained an inspiring moment for Palestine, whose football team carries, perhaps more than any other team, the hopes and dreams of its people.

The Azkals round out their campaign with a match against Bangladesh on March 25 at 5PM Manila time. Bangladesh wasn’t particularly impressive in the 2010 edition of the Challenge Cup; after upsetting Tajikistan, 2-1, the team dropped a 2-1 result to Myanmar and a 3-0 result to Sri Lanka.

Well, that was... a disappointing result. Here's hoping the team can find its form in Myanmar.

first of all, that was a fucking ugly game of football by our Azkals and Mongolia. i thought that UP-UST match was the most annoying televised match i've ever seen in my life, but this 2nd leg was much worse. possibly it was because of the artificial grass and the cold weather, but a win is a win and our players got the job done.

the coach will definitely be watching tapes of this leg to see how bad our Azkals were and point out all the many basic mistakes made. looking forward to Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Palestine... just keep things simple.

It is a sad day that our team cannot even beat Mongolia, which is a lower seeded team. We all should do ourselves a favor and really lower down the hype surrounding the Azkals. It is never good to expect too much and to be just disappointed in the end. The media should also not focus too much on the Azkals. They did great beating Vietnam, but after that great game it has been a steady decline. One great game does not indicate that all the rest of their games will be as good. Unless the Azkals perform consistently, the media and the public in general should expect less from the Azkals. In my opinion, they are still way too raw in the sport of soccer. They have a long way to go before they earn the respect of the rest of the world.

@Tom

You can tell that to Mr.Gabby Lopez of ABS CBN at i request mo sa kanya na wag ng bigyan ng hype ang AZKALS...

at least they humbly admit na masama ang nilaro nila kaya sila natalo.

I agree with you that our Phil futbol team have a long way to go before they earn that respect in international arena pero ang importante they earned respects of average pinoys na kahit di gaanong nakakaintindi ng football na appreciate yung effort ,never say die attitude, sportmanship at pagpakumbaba sa paghingi ng tawad dahil natalo sila.

.kailangan nila maghanap ng ibang channel on that day for PBA games..

Hindi pwedeng i disrupt ng abs yung mga regular programming nila at sponsors sa vhf 2 at uhf 23...baka sila naman ang idemanda.

First, Solar bought the airtime as part of their agreement. If Studio23 decides to back out, there might be legal issues.

TJ Manotoc has said that they are still undergoing negotiations for coverage of the game.

My hunch is if ABS wants to show the games, they'll do it via Balls and on Studio23.tv live, then show the game after the PBA games on 3/23 and 3/25.

There is no chance they will shelve their moneymaking teleseryes and TV Patrol for the game in Channel 2.

(Maybe GMA News TV or AKSYON TV might be able to step in.)

Well, as rankings go, we can remain confident w/ their coming matches against Myanmar, Palestine & Bangladesh. If ever they make it it to the Elite Eight, well, let's wish them good luck and stay happy for all they've achieved.

They've come a long way and have earned all the hype after all the years spent wallowing in relative anonymity.

They really are still collectively a work in progress, and much work remains to be done before they reach the level of world class football teams.
