Jolas and Jaemark

Jerry Codinera, Alvin Patrimonio, and Jojo Lastimosa at the Purefoods bench

I started watching basketball in 1988, when I was six years old. My favorite basketball team was Purefoods – Joe Cantada dubbed the team’s talented rookie corps ‘The Yuppies’ because they were young professionals – and my favorite basketball player was a hotshot shooting guard named Jojo Lastimosa. Not only was he a high-flying daredevil slasher who would finish fastbreaks with 360-degree layups just for the heck of it, he was also a deadly shooter whose range extended far beyond the three-point line.

My grandfather installed a toy hoop in our house for me, and I would spend all my time mimicking my idol. “LASTIMOSA, THREEEEE POINTS!!!” I would yell out, pretending I was at the Ultra as I knocked in a dagger from the perimeter off a kick-out pass from David Thirdkill. At six, I didn’t want to be a lawyer or a doctor or a president. I wanted to be Jolas.

I would watch Purefoods games every time they were on. Because I got good grades, my mom took me to watch a game live at the Ultra, even though she did not know the first thing about basketball. We chanced upon a semifinal playoff game between Purefoods and Ginebra. The game was exciting, and the crowd was furious.

Barangay Ginebra, which was originally the name of the bleacher crowd that worshipped Robert Jaworski, even pelted the court with coins, and the game had to be stopped for a while in the fourth quarter. It was great, especially because Purefoods ended up winning to book a seat in the Open Conference finals against San Miguel, which was reinforced and coached by Norman Black.

Things didn’t go so well with my mom. We had a seat behind the Purefoods goal, and during warm-ups, she tried calling the attention of Lastimosa, so that her son can finally say hello to his idol (the things a mother would do for her kid). She shouted, but to no avail, as Jolas remained aloof. Still disappointed after the game, she took me aside. “Anak, iba na lang ang idol mo,” she said. “Huwag na lang si Lastimosa, ang suplado eh.”

I still liked Jolas after that, but by the next conference, Purefoods had another star rookie who was just as talented, a tall guy by the name of Alvin Patrimonio, and he quickly became my favorite. It meant that I could continue rooting for Purefoods without disappointing my mom. I suppose it now makes sense that I am a sports blogger considering I had my first existential crisis, at age 6, because of basketball.

LASTIMOSA WOULD LEAVE PUREFOODS in 1991, transferring to Alaska and anchoring the Milkmen dynasty of the ‘90s. As I wrote last August:

Perhaps no one typified the cold, clinical efficiency of the Alaska machine more than Jojo Lastimosa, who remains, to this day, the quintessential Alaska player. While Johnny Abarrientos belonged to all PBA fans, Jolas was Alaska’s, and Alaska’s alone. Originally nicknamed The Helicopter for his high-flying, slam dunking ways, Lastimosa transformed his game into a ground-based attack, relying less on athleticism and more on smarts, footwork, and angles, while developing the best medium-range perimeter game since Bogs Adornado. Lastimosa’s transformation mirrored Alaska’s evolution in the ‘90s from the Alaska Air Force into Tex Winter’s Southeast Asian wet dream.

By the time the transformation was complete, my enmity for him became real, like those of other PBA fans, because he became the lightning rod for all the hate that came Alaska’s way:

Jolas was a pretty huge dick on the court, so everyone projected their hate of Alaska toward him (again, since Johnny A. belonged to everyone, we couldn’t hate him). There’s a reason that the best line in all of Gary Granada’s Ginebra songs remains, “At ang inuman ay hanggang umaga, at ang pulutan ay si Lastimosa!”

Of course, as I grew older and more mature as a basketball fan, I couldn’t help but develop a grudging admiration for Lastimosa and his game.

LAST FRIDAY EVENING, I GOT a call from my dad. “Nandito si Jojo Lastimosa,” he said. Lastimosa had been eating at my family’s restaurant for years, and he was there that night after Alaska’s game against Smart Gilas.

“Gusto ka daw niyang makilala,” my dad continued. Jolas had been reading Fire Quinito, apparently, and he wanted to meet the guy behind the blog. He heard I was related to the owners of the restaurant. “Busy ka ba?”

I told my dad I was going to be there in 20 minutes, and flew out the door.

When I got there, my dad introduced me to Jolas, his wife Butchik, and their daughter. It was Butchik who discovered the blog, which she shared with her husband.

“I’m a fan,” Jolas told me. Are you kidding? No, *I’m* a fan, I wanted to tell him. Instead, I launched shamelessly into the story of how he snubbed my mom at Ultra when I was six.

He laughed at the story, and didn’t attempt to defend himself. “Buti nga, hindi kita pinaalis sa upuan,” he said. Apparently, when he was playing at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in the PABL, he’d shooed away a little kid from a seat near courtside. That kid ended up becoming a PBA player, who carried a chip on his shoulder against Jolas even until he got into the pros over the incident.

He said that it was because he was often too focused when he enters the court, which is why he often acts aloof. He is very aware of the suplado tag, and he even cherishes the villain role. “Kapag championship, tapos sinisigawan ako ng mga tao, ‘Buwaya, buwaya!’ gustong-gusto ko ‘yun,” he said.

“So, galit ka pa ba sa akin dun sa nangyari sa Ultra?” he asked me, jokingly.

He then launched into the inside story behind that performance, which would have to wait for another time on this blog.

We spoke about a bunch of other things, just blowing the breeze. I was surprised by how friendly he was; I hate to admit it, but I actually enjoyed talking to Jojo Lastimosa more than I did talking to Alvin Patrimonio. Interviewing Cap was a lot like interviewing a superhero – you knew all of his feats, but he was hesitant to tell you any of his secrets.

Talking to Jolas was, well, like talking to a Fire Quinito reader. See, I know that the stuff I write here isn’t for everyone – not all people will get the humor or enjoy the sharpness of this blog – so it’s always a privilege to talk to a reader who is on the same wavelength.

And I’m glad he is one of them, because if a six-year-old kid didn’t want to be Jojo Lastimosa 23 years ago, I’m not sure this site would even exist today.

I think you meant 23 years ago.

I am intrigued about that "inside story." Hope it gets posted soon. It might rhyme with the inside story I have about that team. Because I happened to catch myself literally "inside" at the wrong moment during those Games.

jolas was also that one with the gasul-girthed legs. lol

Fantastic story Jaemark! It was a great time to be a fan during the late 80s and throughout the 90s. Big fan of Vergel Meneses and the RFM Franchise. That 1995 back-to-back championship war of Sunkist and Alaska is my favorite PBA memory of all time. That year turned out to be the ultimate peak of Sunkist and the rise of the Alaska dynasty.

Looking forward to the Centennial Team inside story!

First saw Jolas when he was with Mama's Love in the PABL. He was darn good, but only played second fiddle to Samboy Lim who was their top gun. I remember they also had Danny Lastimosa in the team.

Eh what about their bench? Wala lang...al solis, glen capacio, naning valenciano, jack tanuan lang naman to name a few.not so sure kung sama sa line-up sina sonny cabatu n pido jarencio.no wonder nanginig tuhod at bumigay ang alaska milkmen aka airforce nung 1990 3rd conference.0-2,3 straight!!!

#18.2.1 weckl on 2011-03-11 23:45 (Reply)
Hindi naman bangko si Asaytono. He was a high-impact player off the bench, who was on the verge of breaking out. But yes you're right, he played behind Patrimonio, and only became a superstar after he left Purefoods.

During the time of purefoods, anejo rhum, great taste, hills bros, shell and san miguel hindi pa ganun ka NBA wannabe ang mga players...Meron tayong Filipino brand of play na trademark natin noong araw...

Kaypee the official shoes of the PBA and becedyn official vitamins.....after matapos ng game may Jollibee best player...ganyan ka asteeg ang PBA noong araw.....all filipino conference ang the best games sa PBA.

pag commercial break sa PTV4 Faces disco with joaqi trillo...yung sikat na bar noong araw......dunkin donuts bloopers pag halftime...
#24 gilazkals on 2011-03-10 14:08 (Reply)

Excellent story. Like many people here, though, I'm extremely curious as to who the kid-turned-PBA player was.

I was a Hills Bros / Alaska fan from back in the Bruise Brothers years (Villamin + Relosa was a great interior tandem) plus Paul "Bong", Ric-ric and Boy Cabahug. The team was always dangerous but not really a championship threat. I was pretty excited when we acquired Jolas but I never thought it would eventually lead to the team becoming a PBA juggernaut. Good times!

Lupet mo! May fans ka nang PBA personalities ngayon. Btw, where's your family resto? Nice writeup on Jolas, liked the way he played. I used to stalk his house, (dunno if he still lives in our village) which used to be a house of another PBA great as well. Too bad he didn't have a son to pass on the basketball genes. He was like a Danny Ainge when he played for Alaska then, you'd either hate him or love him.

one shot that i won't forget coming from jolas is the one he made during the 1989 all-stars. if i remember it correctly, dante silverio made that play for him.

rookies and sophomores were down by 3 with under a shot clock to force an overtime in regulation. silverio called for a time out and designed the play, instructing the players so that jolas could make a three-point shot.

it was also in this time that i saw players follow what the coach would tell them to the letter. the players executed silverio's play perfectly. jolas nailed the three from the left side exactly as how silverio envisioned him to be free to take the shot.

baby dalupan was forced to call a time out immediately and quickly designed a play to end the game. he opted to go to ramon fernandez to take the last shot.

game resumes, and like what happened with the rookies-sophomores, the veterans did exactly what dalupan told them, position and all. jaworski attracted the defense as he went with the ball near the hoop only to pass it to the incoming fernandez at the last two or three seconds. el presidente then ran, jumped, and made a hook shot to finally end the game.

back then, jolas was already a 4th quarterman and a clutch performer, but he exhibited it most in 1998 versus kazakhstan.

Hi there! I've been following your blogs and articles this past year, I might say pretty good so far...your a kindred spirit, a true sports fanatic. I couldn't help but relate when you write about those nostalgic days and reminisce about the old PBA of our youth, remembering the SMB-Purefoods rivalry, always being chided by my brother who was a huge purefoods fan, while I the SMB diehard, our never ending fantasy basketball wars...the rise and fall of the SMB Invinsible Armada( Mon Fernandez, Caidic, Samboy, Calma, Franz Pumaren and a young Ato Agustin and Ravena), the memorable and repeated RP national basketball team debacle, the many missed opportunities. I could still remember the horror and heartache of Busan 2002, when Olsen missed, I had a headache that lasted the whole day, tears suddenly flowing down my cheeks...I never forgot that day of infamy...as the Inquirer headlined the next day and to sum up all the unfortunate events that happened that year (Ron Jacobs after being declared the national team coach suffered a debilitating stroke, Danny Seigle suffering an achilles tendon rupture to end his Asiad even before it started, the Fil-Shams), ours was the Road to Perdition...many memories some some sad but mostly poignant. I support and urge you to continue with what you had begun, it is a good thing to reminisce and not accept mediocrity (Quinito, Nathanielzs), stay true, and never sell-out..Good Day!, by the way who was the kid that Jolas was talkin about?
#35 APE on 2011-03-16 01:45 (Reply)

Galing nung istorya, natuwa ako sa mommy ni Mr. Jaemark great mom!

Ako si Johnny A. talaga ang mas idol ko pero si Jolas ibang klase yung demeanor sa court, just the exact details that Mr. Jaemark pointed out. Alaska won't be Alaska without their Triumvirate.

Yung laro ni Jolas during '98 ASIAN GAMES talagang amazing iyon. I thank JOLAS for all the things he done for ALASKA up to now he remain loyal with them, yung pagababalik Alaska niya yun talaga ang pinaka-AMAZING!

Btw, sino nga ba yung bata na sinupladuhan ni Jolas and became a PRO?
#37 daleiranon on 2011-03-27 16:47 (Reply)
Jae,

Next to Robert Jaworski, Jolas is probably the PBA player I hate the most. It's not because his Alaska teams beat the shit out of the San Miguel teams I rooted for, but it's because of the the pangsasahod na ginawa niya kay Samboy!

I probably hate Jolas more than Jawo, because at least Jawo was funny (I found his huddles and coaching style hilarious).

That said, this guy is the ultimate Alaska boy in my view. He might not have been the best player on those Alaska teams but he always appeared to be the glue that kept that team running.

And also pinagsisihan na rin ata niya yung nagawa niya kay Samboy. Is this true?

Dale
#37.1 jaemark on 2011-03-28 14:23 (Reply)
I don't think that Samboy play was intentional, especially since Samboy and Jolas were teammates in the PABL with Mama's Love and were in fact close friends. I think Jolas apologized to Samboy after that incident already.

Jaemark, first of all I'm a big fan of your work here. your work has helped me through some very boring business hours hehe

I think after the incident between Samboy and Jolas, Jolas immediately went to the hospital to check on Samboy. And the first thing that Samboy told him was "sino panalo?" Might be an urban legend but great story if it was true.
