Phoenix Petroleum in talks to buy Barako and what it means to the PBA’s future

Multiple outlets this morning are reporting that Phoenix Petroleum is in talks to acquire the Barako Bull franchise. If and when the transaction pushes through, it will finally put an end to one of the most pathetic episodes in PBA history, which saw the once-proud Red Bull franchise crippled by financial problems and forced to sell its key players to barely make payroll from month to month. Finally, the nightmare is over.

But while talk of Phoenix’s entry over the next few months will revolve around basketball-related matters – Will they be able to become competitive? How will they rehabilitate a team whose lineup has been ransacked? – let’s take a look at the most important part of this transaction: Will they be able to afford supporting a PBA team?

Here’s a look at the financials, and how Phoenix compares to other teams in the PBA:

PBA teams revenue

  2. Source: 2010 Meralco earnings report.
  3. Based on San Miguel Brewery Inc. earnings. Source: 2009 SMBI earnings report.
  4. Based on San Miguel Pure Foods Company, Inc. earnings. Source: 2009 SMPFCI earnings report.
  5. Source: 2009 Alaska Milk Corporation Annual Report.
  6. Based on Coca-Cola Beverage Group earnings. Source: 2005 San Miguel Corporation annual report.
  7. Based on Ginebra San Miguel, Inc. earnings. Source: 2009 GSMI earnings report.
  8. Source: 2010 Phoenix Petroleum earnings report.
A few other notes:
For Talk N Text, I listed the financial information for the PLDT wireless group instead of the whole company. For Coke, no data has been available about Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines Inc. (CCBPI) since the company was sold by San Miguel Corporation to The Coca-Cola Company in 2006, so I used figures from SMC’s 2005 annual report. Airfreight 2100, Inc., which owns Air 21, and Asian Coatings Inc., which owns Rain or Shine, have no financial data readily available.

As we can see from the graphs above, Phoenix is still smaller compared to other teams in the PBA, but it’s not that far behind some squads. In fact, its 2010 annual revenue is already bigger than Alaska’s 2009 figure.

But perhaps even more importantly, Phoenix is still a growing business, as shown by a quick look at the company’s financial highlights:

Even more expansion is in the offing for the company, which disclosed that it had earmarked P1.5 billion for expansion this year. Last September, Phoenix raised some P500 million from the issuance of preferred stocks for investors. By all indications, it’s a company that wants to go big time.

If I were PBA commissioner Chito Salud, I’d roll out the red carpet for Phoenix. If it does end up joining the PBA, then it will be an affirmation for the league both as a marketing vehicle and as a prestige membership club for companies. It sends the message that punching a PBA ticket is a sure signal that a company is now playing in the big leagues. It’s also a sign that there are still companies apart from those controlled by Manny Pangilinan and Ramon Ang willing to invest in the league, which bodes well for the future of Philippine basketball. For the PBA, a diverse, competitive league is a healthy league.

In the short term, the entry of a new team would form a four-vote bloc in the PBA board (Alaska, Powerade, Rain or Shine, Phoenix) which isn’t beholden to SMC or MVP – and it might pave the way for meaningful change in the way things are run for the PBA. It’ll be the first step to making a fairer PBA, where the salary cap is followed, and trades are made only for basketball reasons. If that ends up becoming Chito Salud’s legacy – a big IF – then he’ll end up being remembered as the man who fixed the PBA.

whoa, nice research jae. you got numbers to back it up. was wondering where Air21 was until I read your notes. What i'd like to see though is how Air21's profit from the time it joined 2002 until now (excluding dubious sales) and if they indeed surpassed their competition (like LBC) through PBA.

I like the last paragraph. you nailed it.

If indeed Pacman has a significant stake in the oil distribution company other than being owner of a number of gas stations in the Sarangani/Gensan area, that I think is something.

He is an endorser to both TNT and SMC products though he is more inclined to the latter.

Hmmmm, anyway, would they allow him to play in the big league? hahaha

The Phoenix Petroleum is a growing company. According to the graph their revenue increase from year 2007 to 2010.

No doubt the figures speak for itself..Phoenix Petroleum should continue expand their market to the national capital region... The big 3 is their toughest rival in the country excluding sea oil and other petroleum brands.

The Phoenix Petroleum wil be competing with other PBA clubs such as monopoly giants like meralco/pldt, and SMC....The question is kung makaka-survive sila sa PBA, ma-maintain yung franchise, the salary cap issues and they will recoup their investment?

Dapat mas mura ang Diesel and gasolina sa kanila compare to other petroleum brands to keep with-in the reach of masang filipino ...like the tricycle drivers na avid viewer ng basketball at boxing habang naghihintay ng pasahero sa terminal na may naka-installed na tv.

Phoenix Petroleum should tap some smart gilas players on the next PBA draft...These players from national squad had already toughen their skills everytime they play overseas...Let's include their experience from fiba brand of play....The gilas players has their own fanbase.

The problem with SMC and pldt group masyado atang mataas yung salary cap sa mga marquee players nila...The question is deserve ba ng mga marquee players yun ganung kalaking sweldo at hindi nga nila ma-upgrade yung level ng games na pang international standard..

Ang Problema lumiliit ang supply for quality marquee players and future basketball stars but the demand for quality basketball game is increasing...

PBA should penetrate Global market to promote their commercial teams abroad....Aside from out of town games ay magdagdag pa ng games from overseas to increase their gate receipts na galing sa mga lumalaking bilang ng mga OFWs natin and filipino communities abroad.

Invitational games and remove the height ceiling from imports para mas competitive ang liga.

PBA have a lot of talented players. they just stock in a bench of those team that has pure all star player like SMB.

Hehehehe.

Anyways, good read pre. With graphical presentation pa. Hehehe.

Cebuana Lhuillier perhaps.

Like you I'm sick and tired of the wheeling and dealing of this two giant companies.

Well, I did say that the bloc of four teams isn't beholden to either SMC or MVP. Air 21 is beholden to both.

Malay mo makasungkit sila ng 1-2 star players plus this rag tags. Tyagain lang sana nila parang RoS nung naguumpisa.

I think the major block for Phoenix Petroleum in entering the PBA will be San Miguel Corporation; basically because SMC owns Petron. Its a conflict of their product, there were even rumors that BMEG will change their name to Petron. Hope the votes will overturn SMC teams and even MVP. And if Phoenix will be joining they need to make sure to put up competitive team yearly and not to give up so many talents for a free Magnolia Drink, Hotdog, Unli Texts, 1 month free Meralco billing, Isang platitong mani or a dance with Mommy Dionisia. hehe

Wonder how Phoenix Petroleum's application would be received by the PBA Board. If reports are true that SMC is indeed buying the Air 21 franchise, they would most likely name the franchise for their petroleum company, Petron. We all know that the PBA disallows competing brands from playing in the PBA. And while SMC still has a couple of companies in their fold, Petron would most likely be the chosen brand to take over Air 21, if ever the buyout happens.

So it would be interesting to find out the dissenting voters in the Phoenix application...

just curious, when was this rule implemented? kasi we had competing brands before, like Purefoods and Swift, or Pepsi/Sarsi or say San Miguel or Tanduay?

Phoenix will use the AddMix name in the PBA. It's a brand of adhesives and glues. This was used by the company when it sponsored the Adamson Falcons in the PBL last year.

To Mr. Firequinito, nice one again (very sipag research)!

I don't think they will be like Redbull w/c is not a prime commodity, since petroleum yung product ng PHOENIX mas malamang sa alamang mataas talaga revenue niyan. They are competent enough to maintain a team in the league.

I can't wait to see this company to join the PBA and I hope that they would build a very decent lineup (just like what ROS did during its 1st seasons).

Yung AIR21 naman sana wag ng biling ng SMC or MVP kung bibilin man sana 1-voting right na lang for all principal corps.

SMC = 1 voting right (regardless of no. of teams they own).
MVP = 1 voting right (regardless of no. of teams they own).
ALA, ROS, POWERADE and other 2-teams (including Phoenix) = 1 voting right each.

Mas magiging balanse ang power sa liga.
