Nonito Donaire knocks the fuck out of bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel

‘The Filipino Flash’ Nonito Donaire scored a spectacular knockout over fellow top 10 pound-for-pound fighter Fernando Montiel this morning, cementing his spot as one of the very best fighters in the world. It was Donaire’s 25th straight victory and his 10th knockout in his last 12 fights. The left hook which sent the Mexican champion reeling on the canvas was reminiscent of Donaire’s star-making stoppage of Vic Darchinyan in 2007.

It’s almost unfair to bring up Manny Pacquiao in light of Donaire’s biggest victory, but it’s inevitable considering Pacquiao is the alpha and the omega of Philippine boxing. Let me just say this: Donaire, at his very best like he was tonight, is almost as enjoyable to watch as Pacquiao.

Nonito Donaire

There are few similarities between the two fighters; Donaire isn’t nearly the whirling dervish that Pacquiao is in the ring (nobody is), but his combination of length, speed, technical skill, and devastating knockout power is something we’ve never quite seen in any Filipino boxer. We all know that Manny is a once-in-a-lifetime fighter, but I suspect that Nonito is, as well.

I’m happy that Donaire’s finally getting his big breaks now, after spending several years in the wilderness; it seems like his promoter, Bob Arum, is finally convinced that he can be a prime time star in the sport too, between this fight and his beatdown of Wladimir Sidorenko last December.

Donaire has talked about moving up to a heavier class – he currently fights at the 118-lb. bantamweight division – and has indicated that his frame can still handle the extra weight. That’s an exciting prospect because there are much bigger names fighting in boxing super bantamweight (122 lbs.) and featherweight (126 lbs.) classes, such as Puerto Rican champion Juan Manuel Lopez and Cuban knockout artist Yuriorkis Gamboa. It remains to be seen if Donaire will be able to retain his power as he moves up in weight, but he has looked great jumping from flyweight (112 lbs.) to bantamweight.

If it happens, he’ll have the opportunity to exceed the achievement of every other Filipino boxer save for Manny Pacquiao. All the other drama wouldn’t even matter as long as he keeps winning. And that won’t be too bad at all.

Have you seen the HBO post-fight interview where he kinda sorta accidentally said he'd be willing to fight Pacquiao, then took it back?

I caught part of it, because ABS-CBN was using the Top Rank feed instead of the HBO broadcast (there was audio though). He seemed like he was confused by the question, although yeah, it did sound like he was willing to fight Pacquiao if it came to it. Didn't hear him take it back though.

Nonito is like the Kobe to Pacquiao's MJ. Both are great fighters. One is considered as one of the all time greats, if not the GOAT. The other one is considered as the "heir apparent". Donaire wants to conquer multiple weight classes, just like the Pac-Man (just like Kobe wanting to win multiple rings, like MJ). There are just some of their similarities, there are actually more... Anyways, that knock-out was just awesome. Highlight-reel material for sure. The ref should have stopped the fight once Montiel did his "swimming" thing.lol

after seeing the donaire knockout yesterday, i immediately wanted the idea of him and pacquiao slug it out on the ring since mayweather keeps on doding pacquiao and donaire needs an icon to cement his legacy.

Hold on to those Pac-FF fantasy matches now, you do realize that Manny's at 135-7 lbs while Donaire's still at 118? Maybe a couple more fights (and that's only IF Pacman doesn't retire).

Great win by Donaire, now if he could only stop appearing on Showbiz talk shows, cry one minute and sing the next.

yeah, that's why it's almost wishful thinking for a pacquiao-donaire fight. maybe 2-3 fights then settle for 128 pounds, it's a fair trade.

there's no chance that a pacman-fil.flash fight would happen. in terms of fantasy fights, i'd go for a donaire-juanma lopez match-up. the only concern here is if nonito can carry his power in the 126-lb division. if he can, he'll definitely be a tough match for juanma, who i think has a questionable chin/defense.

1. the video is no longer working

2. I love the use of the word "fuck" in the title.

3. I'd masturbate over Donaire vs. Juan Ma as if it's a video of Karina Hart doing hardcore.
