Barako Bull takes a leave from the PBA

Nelson Beltran reports in today’s Philippine Star (sadly, the story doesn’t seem to be online read the story here) that Barako Bull is taking a leave of absence from the Philippine Basketball Association. The move would pave the way for Smart Gilas to play two conferences in the PBA, an idea that initially drew apprehension from Commissioner Chito Salud because it would disrupt the league’s calendar. With Barako dropping out, Smart Gilas could take the Energy Boosters’ slot in the Commissioner’s Cup and the Governors’ Cup.

James Ty posted a few more details on Twitter, saying that Barako will pay the salaries of the remaining players under contract, and they will be allowed to try out for other teams as well. The marquee names in the Barako Bull lineup include Marlou Aquino, Lordy Tugade, and Rob Wainwright, who has also ready taken to Twitter to look for a team.

Barako Bull leaving the PBA is certainly a welcome development, and is another step to ensuring the competitive balance of the league. Personally, I thought this should have happened sooner. The league should have acted as soon as there were reports that Barako was making trouble making payroll; it definitely hurt the image of the league, and by extension, the teams in it. I’m not sure team officials are aware of just how much having a joke of a team in Barako in the PBA hurt their brand.

The reason for this is that from a basketball perspective, having Barako in the league was a boon, especially for stronger teams, who could keep picking off assets from the team in exchange for mere cash considerations. They couldn’t care less about what the fans think, and it kept happening time and again over the last two years. And each time, the transaction became more brazen than the last.

If this is indeed the end, it’ll be a sad, if overdue, exit for the once-proud Photokina franchise. The company marked its entry in Philippine basketball after joining the Philippine Amateur Basketball League in the late ‘80s under the Agfa Color banner (here’s an old game result from Manila Standard – take a look at the name of hero of the game).

Agfa and later Red Bull continued to compete in the rechristened PBL before joining the PBA in 2000, tapping amateur standouts Kerby Raymundo, Jimwell Torion, Junthy Valenzuela, Lordy Tugade, and Bernard Tanpua, signing Fil-Ams Davonn Harp and Mick Pennisi, and convincing then-PBL Commissioner Yeng Guiao to mentor the team. Under Guiao, the franchise won three titles: the 2001 Commissioner’s Cup (with Tony Lang), the 2002 Commissioner’s Cup (with Julius Nwosu and Sean Lampley), and the 2005-2006 Fiesta Conference (with James Penny). Willie Miller won the 2002 PBA Most Valuable Player award as a member of the franchise.

Observers have pointed to the company’s loss of the import franchise for the Red Bull energy drink as the reason for the downturn of its economic fortunes. But Photokina was involved in another controversy that could have affected its bottom line more severely. During the Estrada administration, the company was awarded a PhP6.5-billion by the Commission on Elections for the Voter Registration and Identification System (VRIS), which was part of the country’s election automation project.

But the deal met opposition from within the commission itself, as then-Chairman Harriet O. Demetriou expressed disapproval toward the contract. Her successor, Alfredo Benipayo, took things a step further, announcing that the Comelec would scrap the project altogether.

Photokina sought an injunction with the Quezon City Regional Trial Court to compel the Comelec to execute the contract. This was questioned by Benipayo and Commissioners Resurreccion Borra and Florentino Tuason, Jr. before the Supreme Court.

The deal was voided in 2004 by the high court, in a 14-0 vote, because it was “illegal and against public policy.”

Nice article here. I remember the old Red Bull Thunder - that was a great team. I wish the best to all the Barako Bull players.

I think Ginebra should get Marlou for 1 season and let him retire as a gin king. After all ginebra fans love him and he brought championship to ginebra.

Jaemark, if I may add, all of George Chua's other businesses have also folded up like Agfa Films, Polaroid Cameras, Dreyer's Ice Cream and Don Henrico's Restaurant.

I also read in the Bulletin that some of the Barako players were caught off-guard by the decision of the team to go on leave.

Right now, these players are uncertain of their future.

Yeah its about time.. They should have done that way way back, when they are giving away their marquee players to teams in exchange for cash... Also include AIR 21.. both of them are giving PBA bad bad bad reputation...

A sign of things to come for other cash-strapped and/or mediocre teams?

A good number of us may think of expansion to make the PBA more exciting and interesting, pero aanhin ba ang expansion kung nalulugi ang ibang mga established teams? Everybody's feeling the pinch, though, as recession is still very much a buzzword worldwide.

I think the PBA would do good to field a lean and mean lineup of 7 or 8, maybe even just 6 teams. Hopefully this won't lead to the PBA becoming even more of a "San Miguel league" (but it might), but let's face it, this seems to be the most feasible option for the PBA's future. The PBA was really exciting in my grade school days, nung 6-8 pa ang teams. Teams were well-stacked with talent, and anyone could be competitive anytime, even the then-expansion Pepsi and Swift teams after just about a year. Right now, to be very honest, it seems watered down - a league where, with all due respect, the likes of Mark Andaya, Gilbert Lao and Ervin Sotto still have PBA jobs, just because they're big.

Still, kawawa naman ang mga players ng Barako Bull. Di na daw sumusuweldo yung mga iba since November, and Mr. Chua still uses "positive scripting" by saying his decision is patriotic in nature? People weren't born yesterday.

ML Kuwarta Padala of Cebu, which is a team from the Liga Pilipinas, has long expressed its desire to enter the PBA as an expansion team.

The PBA board and team owners may tackle the expansion plans of the league in their meeting tomorrow.

Hmmm, sounds interesting. But honestly I doubt it. It would be best IMHO not to expand, and maybe even contract further to 7 or 8. The drawback, of course, is less jobs for fringe players (hopefully they've learned from the examples of the late Teddy Alfarero and Alex Clarino, et al., casualties of the six-team PBA due to a lack of PBA jobs in those days), but this would inevitably lead to better basketball and maybe a renewed focus on rivalries and intensity. Even if the PBA's style of play was quite unsophisticated in the '80s (read: larong buko), at least you saw people playing their hearts out.

must i clarify that barako bull has given the salaries already to people. And excuse me, i believe that Mr. Chua's decision was patriotic. Hello. Right you just said that the players are not receiving their salaries? Tapos, they players are complaining diba? Eh di, Mr. Chua did the right choice by releasing everyone so that they can get into better teams with higher paying salaries. So, how is that not something positive? And really, if these players are really good, then others teams will not miss the chance to get them. They will not be "kawawa" as you all think. If they are not chosen, then that means they need more practice. Obviously it's a sign for them to exert extra effort so that they can be better athletes.
