If you’ve been avid about following the fortunes of Smart Gilas national team on the Internet, you’ve probably heard about Christian Standhardinger, a Filipino-German prospect who has spent the past couple of years playing for the Nebraska Huskers in the United States NCAA. An athletic 6’8” forward whose mother is Filipino (his middle name is Hermoso), Standhardinger played for the German youth national basketball team, but still remains eligible to play for the Philippines in senior competitions.
The last time we heard from Standhardinger, he left Nebraska over reported disputes with his coach over playing time. Then yesterday, it was announced that he was transferring to LaSalle (the US NCAA school, not the UAAP powerhouse).
Today, however, the transfer seems to have hit a bit of a snag. LaSalle coach John Gianni announced in a statement that it would be “in the best interest of all parties that Christian Standhardinger does not attend La Salle University.”
Turns out Standhardinger might have celebrated his impending transfer to a new school a little too hard, as Nebraska police announced that
the player was ticketed for public indecency over the weekend:
Lincoln police reportedly found Standhardinger shirtless and with his pants down while seated in the passenger seat of a parked car at 3:40 a.m. Sunday inside Tierra Park. He was accompanied by a 19-year-old female, also reportedly shirtless.
Both Standhardinger, 21, and his companion were ticketed on suspicion of public indecency and entering a park after hours. Lincoln city parks are closed between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
The incident seems pretty tame, especially compared to the one involving another Smart Gilas Fil-foreign prospect, Stanley Pringle, a former guard for Penn State. Pringle was accused by a woman of
masturbating in front of her in a university library.
It remains to be seen whether Standhardinger would be able to latch on to another NCAA team – or if he even wants to continue his college basketball career at this point. I’m sure teams in the Philippines would love to get hold of a 6’8” prospect with legit US Division I experience.
