San Miguel beats Ginebra in 6, sets up Philippine Cup showdown vs Talk N Text

Over the existence of this blog, I’ve had the opportunity to have candid conversations with a lot of people who are insiders when it comes to PBA basketball. In these conversations, one thing about coaching keeps cropping up: the X’s and O’s matter a lot less than fans would want to believe.

Of course, there have been coaches whose attention to game planning and preparation have given their team solid edges, such as Ron Jacobs and Tim Cone. Still, at the end of the day, the biggest impact that a PBA coach has on his team is measured by how willing his players are to bust their asses for him.

It seems like cliché, but after talent, desire is really the biggest key for winning basketball, and it’s up to the coaches to get the best out of their players. It comes in a myriad ways; Robert Jaworski and Yeng Guiao use an odd mix of humor and verbal abuse to motivate their players, Chot Reyes has all kinds of gimmicks including showing movies like Braveheart, and my favorite Ryan “The Genius” Gregorio charmed his players into winning two All-Filipino championships.

I was thinking about this last night as I watched Ato Agustin’s San Miguel hold off Ginebra and book a date with Talk N Text in the Philippine Cup finals. One thing that stood out was the fact that under the Atom Bomb, these Beermen were really busting their asses.

In previous conferences, especially in All-Filipino tournaments, San Miguel often folded under pressure, and they visibly lacked the toughness needed in the PBA playoffs. In the series against Ginebra, they displayed toughness both physically and mentally. A lot of it has to do with the play of Jay Washington and Alex Cabagnot, two talented young players who have underachieved their whole careers.

I’m not the biggest fan of Jay Washington, but he was very impressive in this series, finally doing some justice to all the talent that he’s been blessed with. It helped that Ginebra really didn’t have the length or athleticism to match up with the 6’6” J-Wash – he was covered for most of the series by the 6’3” Rudy Hatfield and the 6’2” Willie Wilson – but that doesn’t detract from the effort he poured in for the series. I’d be interested to see if he’d still be able to pull this off in the finals, where he’s facing a frontcourt that’s both tough and athletic, or if he’d be reduced to hanging around the perimeter once more.

Actually, the whole team has been playing courageously, refusing to be bullied by the more physical but less talented Ginebra team. Cabagnot, who has been a hero all tournament long for the Beermen, came through once again, and the confidence that he plays with when he takes big shots is indicative of the whole team.

It’s also impressive how San Miguel has been playing smart, apart from playing hard and playing confident. Endgame poise, which used to be a waterloo for this team, is now an asset, and it was on display last night during the play that led to Cabagnot’s game-clinching three-pointer. Agustin had drawn up a play coming off a timeout, but his plans were foiled when Ginebra sprang a zone defense on them. The Beermen calmly ran its zone offense and found Cabagnot for the jumper.

I don’t know if San Miguel can win against Talk N Text. Despite the media hype, they are not nearly as deep as the Tropang Texters, and the top four Beermen – Washington, Cabagnot, Dondon Hontiveros, and Arwind Santos – would need to bring it every night for them to beat TNT in the finals.

But it’s still remarkable how much the Beermen have been transformed. When it comes to X’s and O’s, Agustin hasn’t done anything special. In fact, he’s actually simplified the team’s offense. But the team he’s coaching is playing hard, and playing smart, and playing with courage.

I don’t know how much credit Agustin deserves for the transformation. Maybe he’s just really lucky. Or maybe he made his own luck, like he did with San Sebastian. With the way his coaching career has gone, would you be surprised if he gets lucky one more time against Talk N Text?

ikaw ba naiintindihan mo sinasabi mo? how will the players bust their asses playing good basketball if they dont understand what coach ato is saying? and how will the players be motivated if they dont understand their motivator? common sense... dont be so assuming about things that you yourself dont see and dont even hear...
some people really have crab mentally and insecurities in life,,,that they cant be happy for the success of others...

Ali Peek and Ranidel will have a hard time against the athletic San Miguel bigs
Its going to be an explosive backcourt showdown between these squads.

you mean athletic bigs like Mick Pennisi, Dorian Pena, and Danny Ildefonso?

@victor. TNT is way better than smb in all positions. even if peek and ranidel have a hard time they still have kelly and carey. I dont think it will be a backourt showdown. These teams rely on their frontcourt and it was evident in the semis. TNT pulverized DAL frontcourt and ginebra was burned by jay wash, arwind and pena.

that's because Bmeg and BGK had very little post defense, Ginebra's center for the most part was 6'3 and the sampayan brigade of Bmeg was reduced to the toothpick bros, due to their injuries.

good read, not convinced though that SMB is not nearly as deep as TnT

Chot likes to shuffle some of starters but regularly lookm who comes off the bench for TnT -

Aban, Castro, Alvarez, Fonacier, Peek, Dillinger. While these may seem decent, look at what's waiting for this squad in their counterparts at San Miguel - Danny S, Danny I, Joseph Yeo, Sunday Salvacion, Denok Miranda, Pennisi, Racela, heck even Artadi could be a vital contributor for this squad. Even the 2 Dannys could be vital contributors to this squad if given minutes. Danny S scored eight points in just 9mins for SMB in game6. I believe these 2 teams are evenly matched and desire will be a big factor, and of course who plays the better defense, and we all know what team that is.

@jaemark
No I don't think Mick and Dorian are athletic
Arwind, J Wash, Danny S are athletic Danny I is still quick lost a lot of his hops though
Looking forward how Alex will fare against Jimmy
@jojo
SMB's bench is deeper

Keys to remember when going up against Talk n Text:
1. Controlling the tempo- TnT loves to run, in fact they will go to their 2-2-1 zone press if they can't get the tempo they want.
2. Clog the driving lanes - most of their shots are coming off the dribble, that's why a good help and recover scheme is a must
3. Let the drivers be the shooters , and let the shooters be the drivers, and to remember to put a body on their sweeper

you guys don't see? It's because this is the last conference for Olsen. Eyes on the prize. Focus. Release the Kraken!!!
#9 jojo on 2011-01-20 13:20 (Reply)
@viktor. Ok I can see that you are an SMB fan, but lets put it this way, Aside from alex, jay wash and arwind who else is consistent in san miguel? SMB is lucky they survived Ginebra tnx to cabagnot and jay wash but cabagnot will be guarded by 2 of the best defensive guard in the pba in this series Castro and reyes. Jay wash will have a hard time against kelly w. And the bench you are saying who would you rather want coming off the bench, jason castro or olsen racela/artadi. Ranidel or danny S. dillinger or salvacion?

Though Talk n Text has the advantage in terms of the match-ups between KWilliams and JWashington and ACabagnot against the defense of RReyes and JCastro, still SMB have those mismatches on DH against LFonacier, Yeo on Aban.....Talk n Text got lucky you should say for they fought against a depleted line-up of the DAL....SMB did their best to limit the inputs of the BGK's three kings(Miller, Helterbrand, and Caguioa), who as we all know were deadly scorers....
