In his column yesterday, Quinito Henson wrote about the flap caused by a tweet by Sol Mercado criticizing him. If you’re not on Twitter (and if you’re a PBA fan in this day and age, you really need to be on it), here’s what happened: Mercado was watching the broadcast of the Talk N Text-Derby Ace matchup which Quinito was announcing. After a stepback move by James Yap, Quinito compared the reigning MVP to Michael Jordan, which pissed off Mercado; he swore he wouldn’t watch another minute of the game until the PBA hired an announcer who actually knew what he was talking about.

James Yap fans on Twitter were up in arms, and expressed their displeasure to Mercado like they were Kimerald fangirls in defense of their idol – I kept waiting for the tweet that threatened him na sasabuyan siya ng asido sa mukha. Finally, after a few hours, everyone realized that Mercado was making a comment about Quinito’s announcing, and not James Yap’s game.

Anyway, Mercado apologized via text to the Philippine Star columnist, who took all of it in stride, so I suppose all’s well that ends well. But Quinito had this parting shot at the end of the column:

Actually, I don’t mind constructive criticism but let’s not get personal or violently offensive particularly in sending messages on twitter and facebook. There’s a temptation to be licentious and irreverent because of the freedom that social networking allows. We should realize the responsibility is greater when given wide access to media.

Wonder who he could be talking about.
