Go Azkals! Philippine national football team upsets Vietnam, 2-0, in the Suzuki Cup

Azkals celebrate victory

Writers often come up with all these “Cinderella goes to the Big Dance” analogies in any major sports tournament where a big underdog scores a few upsets against the heavy favorites. The dance that is the ongoing Asean Football Federation Suzuki Cup has officially found its Cinderella: the Philippine national football team, nicknamed the Azkals.

The team had an auspicious enough opening result after drawing 1-1 against Singapore, which was the equivalent of making goo-goo eyes at Prince Charming. And last night’s 2-0 upset against defending Suzuki Cup champion Vietnam? That was Cinderella giving the Prince a handjob in the men’s bathroom – it was thrilling, it was audacious, and it was a different kind of happy ending.

Philippines-Vietnam football score

By now, thousands of other outlets have written about the match result, which the announcers called the greatest upset in the history of the tournament. You probably should go ahead and read those first, because they a) contain actual working knowledge of football; and, b) are free of any disturbing sexual analogies involving your favorite fairytale characters.

But if you will indulge me, here are a couple of thoughts about the game:

  1. You know how people say that players like Steve Nash play basketball like they’re playing soccer (sige na nga, football)? They’re talking not just about the grace of the individuals but also the rhythm of “the beautiful game”; in the field, players travel in s-curves as opposed to the hardcourt, where players move in sharp z-cuts.

Let me flip that comparison on its head because last night, the Azkals played football like they were playing a very specific kind of basketball, namely, the ugly, slowdown basketball of late ‘90s San Miguel teams coached by Ron Jacobs. The Beermen knew they didn’t quite have enough talent to match up with other teams, so they killed themselves on defense, drew the possessions out, and played very conservatively on offense – which was how the Azkals drew out the victory last night, parking the bus on defense for most of the game after Chris Greatwich’s first score. It not only worked, but it pissed the hell out of Vietnam’s coach, who refused to shake hands with Philippine coach Simon McMenemy after the match.

  2. It was Greatwich and Phil Younghusband who scored the goals last night, but to my untrained eye, the best player in the game was goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, a 20-year-old English-Filipino who plays for Fulham FC in the English Premier League. He looked like a total stud out there. (Howie Severino even calls him “strapping.”) By the way, those are three key players who were all born in England; that’s one strategy to improve the national football team.

I’m happy with the victory, not least because I’ve seen my share of 7-0 and 5-0 blowouts against the Philippines in this tournament, from when it was still called the Tiger Cup. But more than that, the players deserve every ounce of glory for this win, and hopefully, they can go deeper into the tournament to stave off midnight. Back in the Philippines, there is the reality of the country’s football program mired deep in infighting, politics, and corruption. When the 12 o'clock bell tolls, there will be some really, really ugly pumpkins waiting for this Cinderella crew when they get back home.

in this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_m9wgZ_6G0, there is a very poor loser who made a lame excuse out of the tisoys in our lineup. so bitter that he failed to point out that even the mighty nations of USA and Germany, they employ totally foreign football players.

Dude, minor correction. AFF actually stands ASEAN (not Asian) Football Federation. It is only for SEA countries, the equivalent of what SEABA is for basketball. Nonetheless, this is a really big achievement considering RP cannot even qualify for this tournament 2 year ago. I hope this is the start of something big for Phil Football.

Gah. It's McMenemy. I was actually hoping it'd be McEnemy, which is what I ended up typing. Corrected it now.

this is a group match so they still have to at least draw with Myanmar in their next game or hope Singapore beats Vietnam if they lose to Myanmar to secure a place in the semis.

just imagine what would happen if the Azkals wins the AFF Cup with the annoying bus-in-the-box defense? we'd be the most hated footballing-country in the region.

I'm an American looking for a Filipino perspective. How big is soccer (football) in the Philippines? Do you watch it on TV on a regular basis like they watch American football in the States? please comment.
#11.1 jaemark on 2010-12-08 14:30 (Reply)
It's not big at all. Basketball is the number one sport in the Philippines; you could compare its popularity to American football in the US. Boxing is big because Manny Pacquiao is a superduperstar.

Soccer, or football, rarely ever gets any attention, although there's a small, rabid following both for the national side and for international associations (Premier League, La Liga). The interest surges during the World Cup, with people, usually the upwardly mobile, picking their favorite teams and packing bars for its duration.
#11.2 Balut Vendor on 2010-12-14 12:52 (Reply)
To give you an idea how "popular" soccer is in the Philippines, in a nation with almost a 100 million inhabitants, you can probably count the number of soccer fields in one hand and if you asked the average "Juan" if he can name one Filipino soccer player from the past or even the present, 9 out of 10 would probably scratch their head and just simply give up trying.

"Our soccer prospects aren’t as good at the Asian level either. While our neighbors are certified football nuts, the last time a Southeast Asian team finished in the top 4 of the Asian Cup was in 1972, when Thailand placed third, while Burma’s runner-up finish in 1968 remains the best-ever showing by a team from our region. What makes people think we could do better, even if we tried? " ---- didn't you write this a few months ago? I just remembered this today.

#12.2 jaemark on 2010-12-09 12:55 (Reply)
Well, I was stating facts, and those facts remain true today. We're doing well in the Suzuki Cup, which is at the Southeast Asian level, but it remains to be seen whether we, or any other team from the region, could contend at the Asian level.
#12.2.1 y on 2010-12-11 01:05 (Reply)
I know you were stating the facts. But please read your last line in that paragraph. That's what I actually didn't like. How would you know if you will succeed or not if you won't give it a shot? And good thing, the Azkals gave it a try and now they're on the semis. It doesn't matter whether they are competing in Asian or Asean level, that's not the point. I hope you are getting what I'm trying to say. Basketball is great, I have nothing against it. But for a football fan like me, I just didn't like that line you wrote a few months back. Anyway, seeing your site now with all these write ups about the Philippine football team somehow make it up for that. I think you have 'regular readers' here and I do hope, you will use your site to inspire people to learn more about different sports (basketball and football included), and tell them to always give it a try.
#12.2.1.1 jaemark on 2010-12-11 02:22 (Reply)
That's not really the point of the article. You quoted from it verbatim so I assume you have the link -- you could read it again. My point was that saying that we should shift our devotion from basketball to soccer is inaccurate, if not ignorant. I also have a problem about us saying, so flippantly, that we could be world beaters in the sport if we only tried, because it reeks of arrogance, and it's disrespectful to other countries who devote so much of theirselves into the sports. The target of that paragraph isn't really the sport of football, but the handful of Filipino football fans who seem to want to put their favorite sport in a dick-swinging contest with basketball.

Look, football is a wonderful sport, and I won't just be writing about it if I didn't really enjoy it. But if you're coming here looking to read something inspirational, you're shit out of luck.
