Why we couldn’t watch Smart Gilas (and other Filipino athletes) in the Asian Games

If you were to believe Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) executive director Noli Eala’s tweets, the reason here’s no local television coverage of the ongoing 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games is because the government simply doesn’t care enough about Philippine sports. If the government actually bothered, Eala implies, then there would be no reason for everyone not to be able to watch our beloved Smart Gilas and the rest of our country’s athletes competing in the Asiad.

Noli Eala tweet

Noli Eala tweet

The only problem with that argument is that it’s simply not, well, true. As the always-awesome Patricia Hizon reported on Twitter, the problem with the Asian Games television rights was that the broadcasters from Guangzhou decided not to produce basketball games or boxing matches before the semifinal rounds of each sport. This made television coverage a hard sell for any network looking to find sponsors for the broadcast. Without sponsorship money, of course, it just didn’t make any fiscal sense for any network to carry the games.

But suppose the government actually cared about sports as much as Eala presumably does. If the government-owned National Broadcasting Network decided to air the games at a loss – perhaps the government could realign the budget that would otherwise go to building new classrooms and buying textbooks to buy the rights for the games, because who needs those, right? – we STILL wouldn’t be able to watch any Smart Gilas games because the local broadcasters aren’t producing any video of the games. In fact, the only thing the Philippine government could have done was to declare a war on China, or at least file a diplomatic protest, to force it to air the basketball games.

And even then there’s no guarantee that move would work, because the Olympic Charter aims to make sure that National Olympic Committees are autonomous and free from government intervention. In fact, it reads: “The NOCs must preserve their autonomy and resist all pressures of any kind, including but not limited to political, legal, religious or economic pressures which may prevent them from complying with the Olympic Charter.”

(I had a joke here about how Noli Eala should have known this considering he used to be a lawyer and all, but let’s move on.)

If we’re looking for people to blame, maybe we should start with the Guangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee for the decision, a headscratcher considering that basketball is usually a marquee sport that garner a lot of attention. But I couldn’t help but think that Fiba-Asia, the governing body for basketball in the region, also dropped the ball for allowing this to happen. At the very least, they could have lobbied the GAGOC for provisions for competing countries to be able to broadcast the basketball games, such as perhaps allowing foreign media outlets to bring their own equipment to shoot and transmit them.

Fiba-Asia could also have communicated this issue better with the basketball federations of the competing countries, who should be aware not only of the circumstances surrounding the tournament proper, but everything that has to do with basketball – including the broadcast of the games. These basketball federations could then have communicated earlier with their countries’ Olympic committees and media partners to make the necessary adjustments.

It’s actually a surprise that we didn’t find about this broadcast situation earlier, when perhaps something could have been done. By the way, our representative to Fiba-Asia, the one who should have been keeping abreast of these matters? The SBP, led by its executive director, Noli Eala.

from what i heard the rights to cover or broadcast the asian games is very very very very very expensive... there might be some truth to that....BUT hats off to gma7 management or gmapinoytv for producing a docu on the gilas team ... i think FOUR docus for that matter.

thanks for clarifying this sir. I was also wondering about the tweets of mr. romantic. I think he was trying so hard to be patriotic but by blaming the government, it just shows that Mr. Eala is either addict at the blaming game or an ignorant hopeless romantic!

The Jordan and North Korea basketball game was shown live here in the Middle East yesterday by Al Jazerra sports channel with English commendators.
Ikaw talaga hmmm?

Very interesting. Can you take note kung sino ang producer? The graphics, etc. if it were done by the local Guangzhou broadcaster or by Al-Jazeera.

Jae hoping mamaya sana ang ipalabas live ang laru ng Gilas vs Qatar ( kasi Middle East Team). I don't know kung sinong producer, at this time they are showing live handball game between Iran and Korea by two local channels here other is Kuwait spont channel.
#3.1.1.1 jaemark on 2010-11-17 17:00 (Reply)
I suspect Al-Jazeera has their own production, like they did back in 2006 during the Doha Asian Games.

Sana nga Qatar vs. Gilas yung palabas mamaya, para may live stream naman kahit paano.
#3.1.1.1.1 ER on 2010-11-17 19:16 (Reply)
Jae, Yup Smart Gilas vs Qatar Live thru Al Jazerra Sport Channel 1.
#3.1.1.2 jaemark on 2010-11-17 17:32 (Reply)
Another possibility is that the Guangzhou media only produce a single game for broadcast each day, and that is aired by Al Jazeera and other international networks that carry the games.
#4 joeyboy on 2010-11-20 03:42 (Reply)
jae, al jazeera sports just showed philippines v. japan live today. im not sure though if it is sponsored by al jazeera sports or the asian games organizers because there are no graphics to speak of. they show the scores and time through the jumbotron avery deadball.
#4.1 jaemark on 2010-11-20 13:04 (Reply)
If that's the case mukhang camera ng Al-Jazeera yung gamit nila, tapos kuha lang sila nang kuha ng games in case it would be transmitted... That's very interesting info!
#5 splitzapper on 2010-11-22 13:55 (Reply)
Al Jazeera of Qatar, IRIB-3 of Iran have been broadcasting games of basketball with Asian Games graphics. Same with Al Khass channel. If it was not generic, then the angles (camera) of those different channels would have been different.

But i did remember in 1994 and 1998 that there was no broadcast by the organizers up until the quarterfinals prompting Viva Vintage and NBN to bring in their own crews

BTW, me live stream mamaya laban sa Taipei

A single outlet can shoot and broadcast the game and the other networks can simply buy the feed from them. This is usually how it works with most international competitions.
#6 firefirequinito on 2010-11-22 23:41 (Reply)
then why not buy from that "single" outlet? why have a press release and make it appear that the organizers are only covering from semi finals- up. see for yourself
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKzgomB3-x0

intriguero. more research please
#6.1 jaemark on 2010-11-22 23:46 (Reply)
Because before you can explore buying opportunities from other outlets who are covering, you have to commit to buying the broadcast rights for the whole coverage. If you're not sure that there will be another outlet that wil broadcast the games, it's hard to make that decision because you can be left holding the empty bag. Clear?
