Manny Pacquiao dominates Antonio Margarito

The bloggers called it. Last weekend, The Boxing Bulletin gathered boxing’s top bloggers for a roundtable discussion about the fight between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito, and none of them were particularly optimistic about Margarito’s chances.

And as tonight’s results showed, those guys knew their stuff. Pacquiao rearranged Margarito’s face on his way to a unanimous decision victory, and was so dominant that at the end of the match, he was looking at the referee to stop the fight and spare his opponent more punishment.

Unlike most Filipino fans, those boxing bloggers didn’t have an extraordinary emotional attachment to Pacquiao. Unlike HBO and Top Rank, they didn’t need to sell the fight. Unlike “experts” like Ronnie Nathanielsz, they weren’t interested in playing politics, so they didn’t keep yammering about the supposed issues in the Pacquiao camp, like Pacquiao’s weight.

These were guys who knew their boxing, and they saw the fight for what it really was: a huge mismatch. Scott Christ put it so well: “This is a speed merchant with at the least enough power to keep anyone honest against a lumbering guy who hasn't fought a tough opponent in two years. Does that sound like it has the makings of a great fight?”

That it was a mismatch doesn’t take away from Pacquiao’s huge achievement tonight, beating down an opponent who was about five inches taller and at least fifteen pounds heavier. Filipino fans don’t think of Pacquiao so much as a boxer, but as a superhero, so we’re not really looking for a good boxing fight as much as we’re looking for the next display of superhuman feats. And on paper, cutting down a taller, heavier Mexican badass is pretty super.

But the fact remains that as long as Pacquiao did his homework, this fight really wouldn’t post much of a challenge for the pound-for-pound king. At this point, there aren’t too many challenges left in the boxing world for Pacquiao. There’s Floyd Mayweather, of course, but with all the drama involved in negotiating that fight, and with Pretty Boy Floyd facing a legal battle, who knows if that’s ever going to happen?

I’m not sure if retirement isn’t the best option right now for Pacman. Of course, if he decides to continue fighting, we’d all still turn out in huge numbers, and pay a ridiculous amount of money to catch his fight in the theaters, but then we’d all just be going through the motions, including Manny. He’s given us so much already, and I’m not sure he could do us any better. And we couldn’t really ask for anything more.

muntik na ako dun.hahaha. i really thought his corner would stop it in the tenth. margarito is tough so i knew the would not quit. i also didn't think pac had enough pop to knock him out clean so i thought his corner would stop it.

Nice thoughts, FQ on Pacquiao's prospects after this fight. he really has nothing left to prove.

@Carlo, I've detailed why it was excellent decision not to stop the fight in this blog post: http://bit.ly/dlBxAG

Yeah, Ronnie Nathanielsz is an "expert". Stupid. Arrogant. Know-it-all. Tweeted so much last night (special mention must also go to another "expert", TJ Manotoc) to talk about Manny's weight. Seemed like it was a big issue, didn't it? Dumb ass.

There's Paul Williams, although he doesn't have that big a following and I'm not sure if he really can still make 147 like he claims. Still, Pacquaio against a 6'1" fighter with an 83" reach who's also on most top 10 P4P lists? That would be pretty damn impressive. And he might be able to pull it off too since Williams doesn't use his ridiculous reach well and likes to fight at mid range. Sergio Martinez maybe, but that may be a bridge to far. Then again... how many times have we felt that way coming into a Pacquiao fight?

But I agree, there's really nothing else for him to prove, anything else he achieves is just icing on one pretty amazing cake.

I don't think Arum would choose Williams for the simple fact that he doesn't generate any kind of interest outside hardcore boxing fans. Pero sana talaga hindi si Mosley yung labanan niya next.

sorry Rodolfo but is disagree with that and not because it was what i want to happen or anything.

After the tenth round, Margarito has taken too much punishment already, he didn't have a shot at winning because of the lopsided scores, he didn't have a shot at hurting Pacquiao anymore because he was spent physically, and his eyes were nearly swollen shut.

Cole and Margarito's corner should be thanking the starts that Pacquiao is a decent human being. He barely touched Margarito in the last two rounds. If Pacquiao was an asshole, he would have done everything to hurt Margarito but he did not. The mistake of Cole and Garcia was covered up by Pacquiao's lack of intent to hurt. But if Pacquiao went for the kill and something bad actually happened to Margarito, Cole and Garcia would have never heard the end of it.

Margarito was in bad condition. Yes, he could still see but that's when Cole placed his fingers IN FRONT of Margarito. I'm betting that Margarito did not see Pacquiao when he moved to the sides.

By not stopping the fight, Cole and Garcia basically let Margarito take more punishment for nothing because he had no shot at wining the fight.
