Innovative ideas for the PBA

In a previous post, I talked about the changes being introduced by new PBA commissioner Chito Salud, which he passes off as innovation but are actually recycled ideas. While in the middle writing that entry, I started to think of ideas, from my point-of-view as a fan, that could make my life easier and that could help the PBA. These are all practical ideas that have been done elsewhere, not pie-in-the-sky stuff that the PBA couldn’t possibly do.

I’m sure everyone has ideas as well, so post away in the comments.

Ticket promotion and fan relationship. As a hardcore fan, the reason that I don’t watch more games live is because it’s such a fucking bitch to get good tickets to the game, especially since I root for Derby Ace; only Ginebra games have tougher tickets to get at the lower level.

See, it’s bad enough that PBA doubleheaders require a lot of commitment already: you’re on the hook anywhere from three to six hours inside the arena, so you’ve got to block off a huge part of your day, when you’re unable to do much else. If you want to get good seats to a game, you’ll either have to go to SM or to the Araneta box office a day before a game, or take your chances with the friendly neighborhood scalper. It’s too much work.

There are many ways the PBA can fix this if it really wanted. They can make tickets available for sale online, for example. Movie theaters nowadays allow seat reservations through cellphones. In the coliseum during the middle of the game, the barker usually announces the next play dates for each of the teams playing; the league can make tickets to those games available right then and there, for the convenience of those teams’ fans.

Implementing these things would also allow the PBA to engage its fans in below-the-line marketing. Right now, all the PBA’s marketing efforts are above-the-line, that is, using mass media advertisements to promote its products. Below-the-line marketing would involve engaging the customer and selling to them directly.

Online, mobile, and in-arena ticket sales and reservations would allow the PBA to gather more information about their fans: their favorite teams, their preferred venues and playing dates, etc. Text messages and emails can be sent as reminders to fans that their favorite team is playing; it could even contain incentives – as a discount, free food, souvenir programs (or a copy of Baller) – if they buy a ticket that very instant.

This would be a good first step for the PBA to know more about its fans, and target them accordingly. This could lead to programs that are designed to convert more fans into the PBA at a young age.

For example, most of the fans I know who are my age stuck with the PBA because we’ve been big fans since we were little kids; someone in our family turned us onto watching the games, and we couldn’t quit watching even if we wanted to. Knowing that, shouldn’t the PBA be targeting dads, and giving them an extra ticket free to take their kids to the game?

The curious thing is that the individual teams already have fan relationship down pat. In fact, they give away tickets like candies to their most loyal supporters. Beyond that, team officials and some players would even become knowledgeable about the personal lives of these supporters.

Team officials already treat their fans like family. It’s about time the PBA does so too.

Media handling. All throughout its history, the PBA’s media bureau has been slanted toward print media, and for good reason: the great writers of yesteryears were responsible for turning hoop heroes into local demigods. That slant has remained even as the influence of print media has diminished steadily with the rise of television, and now, the Internet.

Here’s an example of how the PBA continues to coddle print media: during the PBA board of governors’ planning meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, the league flew in five reporters along with them, all expenses paid –Tito Talao of Tempo, Nelson Beltran of the Philippine Star, Waylon Galvez of the Manila Bulletin, Zaldy Perez of Abante, Beth Celis of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, and Gerry Ramos of People’s Journal.

Now, let’s ignore for a moment the ethical ramifications of reporters going on a trip at the expense of the organization they’re covering. Did the PBA get their money’s worth by flying those people to Thailand? It doesn’t seem like the PBA got extra value out of spending all that cash; there wasn’t any story that came from the planning meeting that wasn’t reported by journalists who were in Manila at the time.

In fact, its cozy relationship with the print media hasn’t helped the PBA’s image much. For example, the impression that more people watch the UAAP over the PBA continued to pervade because no one bothered to check the ratings and write otherwise.

I wonder if the effort and resources are better off spent in other platforms. Television exposure for the PBA, beyond its coverage partner Solar Sports, is pitiful. Of course, some would say that because the PBA is not associated with ABS-CBN or GMA-7, there’s no incentive for the giant networks to give the league exposure.

But is that really the case? The PBA has appeared on 24 Oras a few times, mostly when James Yap and Kris Aquino have issues, but also in other instances like during the PBA fashion show. No one’s expecting the evening news to run the scores of PBA games every night, but when there’s a big event like the PBA opening, the annual awards, and the championship, shouldn’t someone in the PBA office be badgering the GMA and TV5 news desk to cover these events? The league could even go the extra mile, having the footage pre-edited and available for the networks’ use to make the job of their reporters and producers easier.

But it doesn’t have to stop with the news. There really ought to be someone in the PBA office who knows who’s who in the showbiz world, to make sure PBA players get exposure in other networks’ programs. The PBA needs to build up this relationship with TV people just as they’ve done with print media.

Then there’s new media, which gets its own bullet point.

New media. The PBA is a marketing vehicle for the member teams, and its most important function isn’t to earn money, but to provide exposure for its members. Which is why it’s unacceptable why still doesn’t have dedicated new media personnel.

We all know the website sucks. But beyond that, why aren’t PBA videos from the league flooding YouTube yet? We know they have it in digital form already, because teams get DVDs of the games after every playdate. We also know that there are a lot of people in the league who know how to edit and put together these videos; they work for the teams to prepare highlights and scouting reports. How hard can it be to upload these online? While we’re on that, why is it so hard to find good, high-resolution images of players in action online? We know that the PBA has an in-house photographer.

Seriously, what is the PBA afraid of, that people will be able to view videos and photos of their players, with the logos of their teams across their chest?

The PBA could actually take it a step further, by signing deals with bigger online media companies such as Yahoo, GMANews.TV, INQUIRER.net, PhilStar.com, FHM, etc. to allow them to use PBA highlight videos for their sites. Again, more exposure.

Aesthetics. The logos of the PBA member teams are really, really ugly. Now, if you’re too lazy to change the logos, at least change the uniforms.

See, the uniforms don’t have to have those ugly, cartoonish, garish logos on them, just like the Lakers uniform doesn’t have the full Lakers logo on the chest. A simple print for the jersey, similar to sponsors prints on European football club jerseys (e.g. Emirates for Arsenal), are not only much more appealing, they actually provide more exposure for the teams, because the simpler look puts the product name front and center.

Nicer jerseys and merchandise also means people would be more inclined to buy and actually wear them in public. More exposure for the teams.

i don't know if a "throwback" night would be feasible to teams, in terms of budget and potential marketability. as a jersey collector, it's refreshing to see teams change uniforms once in a while. the same way i'm amused at how Alaska value their tradition through their retro jerseys. SMB did it once in 2004, kaso natalo sa TnT. :P

and seriously, I've seen Ginebra and SMB uniforms for the past decade. isn't it about time to change them?
#2 fan24 on 2010-10-26 13:30 (Reply)
Very good ideas Jaemark. Actually I've been longing for a long time for PBA teams to change their unis..there current unis are really really fucking ugly, specially my favorite team SMB unis,SO BADUY! I like the Alaska throwback jersey, very nice..I hope the PBA and PBA teams would come to read your blog and will have the mind to change their unis.. just like the Celtics and Lakers unis..so simple and elegant.. for my team SMB, why not just have a plain red and white with the words SAN MIGUEL or BEERMEN on the chest..then I will be the first one to buy..

100 percent agree with you about the PBA unis looking downright fugly. I don't know if changing the unis will save the league though but it would certainly make me a happier viewer. Maybe the PBA needs to institute some sort of Fashion Police to approve or disapprove all uniforms before they see the light of day, haha.

And yes, I too loved the retro Alaska jerseys. But I'm also an Alaska fan so I'm biased
#4 paralusi on 2010-10-26 16:52 (Reply)
you're right about the PBA having butt-ugly jerseys. there us a reason why the sonics, the rockets, the raptors and the grizzlies changed their unis after they realized that the nba does not air on saturday mornings.

"Seriously, what is the PBA afraid of, that people will be able to view videos and photos of their players, with the logos of their teams across their chest?"

This is also one thing I find baffling about the PBA. When someone upload's games on youtube, they take the video down, and suspend the uploader's account. Youtube is supposed to help broadcast and promote things. It defeats the purpose of these sites if organizations like the PBA whine a lot because of copyright infringement.

Also, a big agree on the note on the uniforms. NBA teams make efforts to clean up their jersey since the early 2000's. I wonder when PBA teams will start to do it. It's really better that way.

Online ticket purchasing,it must be done! Hirap bumili nang ticket sa mga gusto mong games! Season tickets must be offered too for die hard fans! By the way loved your article on baller magazine, looking forward to the next issue! More power!

pba jerseys look like fugly billboards! it just goes to say that people running the pba are baduy haha! too many logos of the sponsors like we care bout their proucts anyhow!
#8 Jules on 2010-10-27 04:00 (Reply)
Hire the guys from abs cbn marketing team, they do a good job of hyping up their program.
#9 Jules on 2010-10-27 04:36 (Reply)
Better website with free downloadable images, wallpapers, videos and lots of player features.they can invite bloggers too.improved merchandise like jerseys, souvenirs, caps, flags, tees etc. featuring not just the team but also the supastars.of course it should be updated at least every 2 days if there are no featured games.with regards to jerseys, they should go retro once in a while and banned air21's eagle inspired jersey, they're just damn UGLY.purefoods should also revert back to their blue/red /white colors hell with dandings affinity with rojo.Alaska should just stick with their 2005-07 jerseys, please don't bring back bong Alvarez era jerseys.tbc...
#10 mrskasica on 2010-10-27 08:41 (Reply)
i don't care too much for their jerseys, but my biggest beef with the league is tickets. they're just too damn hard to purchase! It's okay if you live near Araneta, but if you live far away, and won't have guaranteed seats, that sucks!

They can do promos, too, with selling tickets. Some concerts would award meet-and-greet/backstage passes to say the first 10 online ticket purchases.

They can certainly do better with their marketing strategies. I'm thankful Twitter is around. Those PBA personalities on twitter is certainly bringing the fans closer to their idols. I just wish more PBA personalities get on twitter!
#11 Kaboinks on 2010-10-27 10:00 (Reply)
I totally like your ideas jaemark. Agree with it especially the ticket stuff. They could somehow use the strategy of nba teams in ticket promotions.

It would also be better if they have one venue in metro manila (hopefully the PBA Coliseum would come true na)

Also, I think that there should be at least 2 tv stations handling pba games. i saw this in one of the threads in pinoyexchange wherein all Wednesday and Friday games should be on Station 1 while Saturday and Sunday games should be on Station 2. PBA / Solar/ BTV is doing good in their coverage of the games but i think an additional station would be better (babaan din nila yung franchise fee -tama ba tawag dun- sa pagpili ng station)

Same goes with radio coverage... naka concentrate lang sila sa DZRJ. why not have another station help in the coverage for example yung station where i work (shameless plugging hahaa), bale 2 am station and 1 fm station would be ok.

Availability din ng mga pba personalities for interview. We're having a hard time to interview personalities this season unlike last season.. our favorite coach. the genius coach ryan mahirap mahagilap lately. they should have a media committee that will the league be closer to media :)

hmmm wala bang free passes tayo? hahahaha

Lower the prices of tickets. As for TV coverage, I agree with what Kaboinks said, although the problem is whether other stations are willing to tie up with Solar as an alternative station.

Remember, NBN got IBC to do a parallel broadcast of the PBA but it flopped after just a few months of the 2003 season.

Also, get a full-time marketing director who loves the game and who can really market the league full-time. Many marketing directors left the PBA after only a few months.

read and learn, PBA officials who lurk in FQ. That's innovation. Start it with the jerseys. The old cartoonish logos you designed back in 2000 is done.
#14 markku on 2010-10-27 20:40 (Reply)
Amen! Kahit yung simpleng online selling ng tickets, malaking bagay yun, and offering them sooner in the preceeding playdates, di naman mahirap gawin yung mga yun.
#15 sa63 on 2010-10-27 21:14 (Reply)
I like the jerseys.....In fact, the problem I have with PBA is they're not selling enough PBA merchandise. Im a Ginebra fan and I've been waiting for PBA or Accel to sell JC Intal and Ronald Tubid's jerseys.

SO PLEASE PBA!!! START SELLING MORE JERSEYS!!
#16 Mr. Endshiftresign! on 2010-10-27 23:19 (Reply)
Again, I agree with the observations about marketing and media. Bring back the era of rivalries that made Crispa vs Toyota sell so many tickets. Back in the day, you couldn't root for BOTH Purefoods and Ginebra (although I did, in college) because they were bitter rivals. Parang nagroroot ka for Ateneo and La Salle. But I digress. We Pinoys love our rivalries, and there aren't enough in the PBA to go around these days.

Regarding the uniforms, simplicity is beauty. Observe how popular Yankees and Dodgers uniforms are in the MLB. That may not help the PBA's sagging attendance, but it can certainly help merchandise.

Yung sa website naman ng PBA, they should contain archived boxscores and seasonal stats like they do at NBA.com. Para kasi iniisip nila na kokonti lang ang mga stats geeks sa Pilipinas. And more importantly, add more dynamic content and keep the site updated...

Speaking of stats, I've always found the PBA's statistical system weird...rewarding playoff teams' players by tallying ALL GAMES, regular season or playoff, instead of segregating it like the NBA does. Kaya lugi yung mga magagaling na players who happen to play for bad teams pagdating sa MVP at Mythical Five voting. Yun lang ang dapat natin i-adopt sa NBA, and speaking of that point...

..I hope the PBA could finally see the light and stop overdoing what the NBA does so well. Nung high-scoring ang NBA, mas high-scoring tayo. Nung era ng Uglyball sa NBA, mas Uglyball yung sa atin at usong-uso ang line of 5 at line of 6 sa final team scores. The PBA should adopt FIBA rules in the seasons to come, including the 10-minute quarters and 5-foul limits, the whole nine yards. The NBA can get away with deviating from FIBA rules, but then again we have to admit that they have the skill, size and athleticism to get away with it...but even that didn't stop the Americans from getting upset in quite a few world tournaments in the past few years. And forget their excuse that the best NBA players declined to play in those tournaments...before the Dream Team, it was collegiate players representing the USA in the Olympics, and they easily beat players in their 20s and 30s back in the day! If we get back to FIBA rules moving forward, that could help us realize our potential to at least get back to Olympic contention and not be a has-been in the Asian basketball scene...

I forgot to mention, the PBA must get more good coliseum barkers. Boyet Sison and Mark Luzon are good but the IFM DJ Rob is very malamya as a barker.

I was told that PBA was sold like hot pancake during 1990s. I was also told that PBA games and players can be easily followed by fans. I'm a super duper overly big fan of Alaska and I agree that it takes a lot of work to get a ticket. I go to work and it's such a hassle for me to get good seat because I have to go to Araneta or wherever the venue is just to buy ticket. Since I usually get out of work by late afternoon, I usually do not get the seat that I want. More often, I settle watching games through Solar. Online selling of tickets is a brilliant idea, it would give me so much convenience, and I am sure it would apply to other fans as well. Let us have meet and greet with our PBA idols (parang fans day). Lalo na pag off-season.

I agree with improving their jersey. Ang daming nagsusuot ng jersey ng NBA teams. If they could improve how their jersey looks like, the more will wear it. The more people get interested with PBA the more products they can sell.

Cool ideas. I would have implemented some fo these if I was still in the commissioner's office. :)

Peace.

Thanks Jude. Obviously, coming from you, I'm very flattered. Now what's it going to take to get you back inside the commissioner's office? The commissionership? Hehe.

The PBA is a passe idea..Having corporations as basketball team will never have a rabidly loyal fan base...WTF rooting for a beer, sausage, telecom??? are you people serious? One just needs to see the quality of games aired on solar... Its like SLOW MOTION and the players are like saving themselves for the next 10years of earning mega bucks... That is what happens if the teams and players are answerable to no one, coz lets face it nobody gives a shit about the PBA outside metro manila...
Unlike the NBA where if players are deemed slacking in a game, the player gets a bashing from local media and the city itself...Look at what happened to LBJ... Moral of this post if they don't go regional, they will die a slow and quiet death, much of it has been happening in the past decade...Its a good thing Danding's still alive and has loyalty to the PBA and well theirs Girly Pangilinan who has semi unclear intentions....If these people were sane businessmen they would have folded shop a long time ago, teams are suppose to be earning or self liquidatin like the NBA teams...The PBA is one big charity basket...its good team owners venture into it for the love of basketball and marketing...otherwise if this were a truly capitalistic enterprise it would have folded in a year after its inception....
#21 Mon on 2010-10-29 17:11 (Reply)
Valuable insights. At the end of the day really, it is the quality of games that will win back fan interest. Credit to Commish when he said that it is not enough that the best play in the PBA; that the best should play their best - all the time... something to that effect.

And it is not helping when fans' intelligence are being insulted by the lopsided trades, player/coach rigodon among sister teams aided by conduit teams to circumvent the rules.

Fans may not be as gullible as before; thus, perhaps a significant number has shied away from following the local pro league.
#22 Mr. Endshiftresign! on 2010-11-04 01:16 (Reply)
@Mon, good stuff as well with that post. Basketball fans in the Philippines (tayo pa?) were not born yesterday. Nalimutan kong banggitin yun...enough of the trades that defy all logic...

That said, something has to be done about those clowns at Air21. Sayang, gusto ko pa naman yung run-and-gun style nila...it's just the management that sucks big-time, allowing the team to be a conduit to blockbuster trades. If the good Commish (whom I'm quickly losing my faith in) doesn't do something about this soon, chances are we'll be seeing Al-Hussaini and Baclao as role players on San Miguel, Purefoods or Ginebra in a couple of seasons...

Any thoughts on expanding the league or dropping a couple teams? Would it help or harm the PBA? I'd say it could go either way for both options...
#22.1 Mr. Endshiftresign! on 2010-11-04 01:27 (Reply)
Pahabol...dapat matagal ko na 'tong naisip. No wonder teams like Purefoods (Pari Llagas, 2010) and San Miguel (JR Sena, 2009) don't seem too interested in the draft. I guess they know that if they're patient enough, they can get some quality role players (KG Canaleta) or even a bonafide star (Arwind Santos) after a couple years "seasoning" with the one-team NBDL of the PBA, aka Air21.

Ginebra's signed all their first-rounders in recent years, AFAIK, but they're either out of the league (i.e. Macky Escalona) or destined to be back in the amateurs (i.e. Jimbo Aquino, John Wilson) after one or two unproductive years with the team. No worries. They have JC Intal, and used to have Doug Kramer courtesy of Air-NBDL-21. And I haven't even mentioned the veterans on SMC-owned teams who joined their present teams as a result of trades involving Air21...

Still a die-hard Purefoods fan with Ginebra as 2nd favorite, though...just pointing out how SMC teams benefit from the charity of Lito Alvarez...
