Lots of stuff to get to, wala munang pasakalye:
- Got a nice shout-out this morning from my favorite play-by-play man (and fellow Baller contributor) Mico Halili, who dug deeper into Yeng Guiao’s way with words in his column today. He adds a few more quotable quotes from the fiery coach, including my favorite: “Bahala kayo diyan! Hindi ako tatawag ng time-out! Gawan niyo ng paraan yan!”
- I was able to browse through the rest of Baller last night, and I really enjoyed Migs Bassig’s profile on “The Jet” Jeffrey Cariaso. Mang Tom Urbano, Alaska’s resident stats-keeper and in-house referee whom Rafe Bartholomew wrote about lovingly in Pacific Rims, makes a cameo in the piece.
- Rick Olivares says he’s writing more about the PBA this season, and in particular, he’ll be writing a chronicle… on the Alaska Aces! Now, I like Fred Uytengsu and Tim Cone, who have been nothing but nice to me, but does the world need yet another chronicle on the Alaska Aces? You know how when Hollywood has a big hit (like, say, Glee), local entertainment people just blatantly rip off the idea by making a crappy version (i.e. Diva, Idol)? This feels like one of those things.
Anyway, last year, Rick was supposed to chronicle Smart Gilas, but then he had a falling out with people in the SBP. Hopefully this project doesn’t suffer the same fate.
- Speaking of Alaska, here’s an interesting tidbit from Rafe’s Uno Magazine interview, about Coach Tim’s reaction to the book:
He was saying he’s really enjoying the book, but he can’t read it himself. Everytime it gets to a point that it becomes devoted to Alaska, he has to switch, to skip ahead, not necessarily because he thinks he comes off poorly, but just because of that whole thing: it’s hard to hear your own voice, it’s hard to see yourself, you always feel like you’re ten times heavier when you’re on the screen and uglier, or your skin looks bad. Likewise, when someone’s writing about you, you’re like, “Oh God, am I really like that?” So he said he’s having that sort of reaction, but eventually he’ll force himself to read it.
- The kids at Inquirer Sports are back with another feature, this time on Mark Andaya and Hans Thiele of Barako Bull. The piece was alright – I, for one, could not get enough of Big Mac – but it felt like it was a couple of different pieces edited together because of space constraints. Still, I’d love for Inquirer to do these features regularly.
- JR Cawaling is leaving Smart Gilas to concentrate on FEU. After the way he played this UAAP season, do you think there are FEU fans who’d rather he concentrated on Gilas instead? Meanwhile, my Twitter buddy Noli Eala, executive director of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, is concerned about “the gradual erosion of the developmental program.” Doesn’t this pretty much confirm reports that, when it comes to all things Gilas, he’s on the outside looking in?
- Former PBA chairman and Air 21 team manager Lito Alvarez is busy with his new job at the Bureau of Customs. He currently has his hands full with the biggest technical smuggling complaint in the agency, worth P24.4-billion, against Pilipinas Shell. Funnily enough, the Shell official mentioned in the report is VP for communications Bobby Kanapi, who was Shell’s representative to the PBA board when the oil giant was still in the league. Let’s all hope this doesn’t end up in a lopsided trade.
- Sa showbiz happenings: After Grace Lee, it’s now Isabel Oli’s turn to deny that she’s dating James Yap. The two were spotted in a mall, but as Oli points out, she was there with a date, and was only saying hi to the cager. Yap, meanwhile, has been barred by his lawyer Lorna Kapunan from going out on dates.
