Grab a copy of Baller now!

The premier issue of Baller, the new magazine of the PBA is out now, and unlike most other “official” PBA stuff, this actually doesn’t suck. It helps that the project was developed and conceived with little interference from the league, and the people at the helm are experienced publishing industry veterans who knew how to put out a magazine. In fact, the man running it is Eric Ramos, the award-winning writer and former editor-in-chief of FHM Philippines, Pump, and Maxim Philippines.

Baller Magazine cover - James Yap

Perhaps proof that the people behind the magazine are independent is that, well, they hired me. I contributed three pieces for the issue, although I didn’t really know what to expect until I got my hands on a copy today. I haven’t read the whole thing yet, and you know I’m biased because I’m part of the project, but my first impression is that the magazine looks AMAZING. The artwork and the layout is top-notch – again, the people behind the magazine clearly knew what they were doing – although like many other fans, I would have preferred more high-resolution action shots. Maybe next issue?

The cover story on James Yap was written by my idol Patricia Hizon, and it’s a pretty basketball-centric piece, which is nice. That is, if you can ignore the fashion spread featuring James in full metrosexual mode. But I guess those photos are there to bring in the ladies.

Team Baller

Meanwhile, I wrote a long story on the soap opera that was San Miguel Beer’s coaching situation, which I had touched on before on this blog. Along with the article are a couple of sidebars, one each for Ato Agustin and Siot Tanquingcen, looking back at their playing careers.

Baller: San Miguel soap opera

I also wrote a piece about Meralco’s entry into the PBA. Unlike most other stories on the subject, I tried to dig into the reasons why a power utility would want to join a league which has been the domain of consumer-oriented companies.

Baller: Meralco - Let there be light

Finally, I have another interview with Pacific Rims author Rafe Bartholomew. Worth checking out especially if, for some reason, you feel you haven’t read enough exchanges between me and Tiyo Paeng.

Baller: Rafe Bartholomew

And that’s just my crap. There are also features on Jeffrey Cariaso, Sonny Barrios, the Jimmy Alapag-LJ Moreno nuptials, Gabe Norwood and Sol Mercado’s home life, and much more. You can get copies at most bookstores (I got one from National Bookstore) and at PBA games. PhP99 lang!

with Eric Ramos as editor, sure na sure 'to..

Pump lasted for 3 issues, Maxim 12 issues?

sana umabot man lang itong Baller ng 10 issues :-)
#7.1 jaemark on 2010-10-14 14:05 (Reply)
ouch. wala namang bold dito sa Baller eh.
#8 James Ty III on 2010-10-14 14:00 (Reply)
I'm happy that Eric Ramos changed gears and edited a basketball magazine. I hope this lasts longer than his previous magazines.

Regards also to Dennis Gargantiel. His brother Ricky edited Scoreboard where I also was a writer for many years.

I know! I mentioned that to Dencio when we had a meeting at the publisher's office a few months back.

Jaemark, is it possible for me to contribute an article to Baller? I would like to suggest featuring celebrities who watch the PBA games. I can even give you pictures that you can publish. Please consider this suggestion.
#9 bigpedro on 2010-10-14 15:59 (Reply)
Teka lang... people still buy magazines? In the age of the internet? When there's so much free stuff to read in sports websites and sports blogs and the like? Wacky!
#9.1 lj2 on 2010-10-15 16:37 (Reply)
yes people do still buy magazines, madami pa din po.
constructive criticism lang po, was so excited to get the magazine, and while the writing is good, am sorry to say the layout and pictures leave a lot to be desired. Is it the paper quality? Para po siyang pump na editor din si Eric Ramos dati, hindi po talaga maganda ang layout (magulo) and pictures (maliliit and hindi clear).

hope maayos po ito, a classy pba magazine is long overdue.....
#9.1.1 jaemark on 2010-10-15 17:01 (Reply)
thanks for liking the writing, hehe. i kinda agree with you on the pictures, specifically the action shots... they could be better. the studio shots are alright, and the pictures from the other features (Gabe and Sol's pad) are pretty good.

i like the artwork, but yeah the layout can be improved. we're both hopeful that it will be better come the next ish.
#9.1.2 James Ty III on 2010-11-05 12:46 (Reply)
In fairness to Eric Ramos, he helped make FHM the top-selling magazine that it is today. The reason why he flopped with Pump and Maxim was that both magazines copied the FHM format and that FHM was already established with the readers.

sir do you know if baller magazine can be purchase on the net and on what site?
#10.1 jaemark on 2010-10-22 15:26 (Reply)
As far as I know, wala pa sa net. You can call Global Integrated media at (02)815-6238 during office hours to ask about Baller's availability in your area. Look for Maricel Omanito.

Jaemark, maybe next time you can features retired players.

Some of the stories that I would like to see:

1. Patrimonio/Codiñera and J. Yap and Kerby = passing of the torch.

2. Miller/Helterbrand/Caguioa/Cortez = Ginebra's Security Guards

3. Espinas/Belga/Omolon/Aljamal/Escobal/Menor = from bitter rivals to teammates (with a feature of San Beda's championship)

4. Rabeh/Baclao = Ateneo(Big A with small "teneo" and "ir 21" Express (also features current ADMU MBT)

5. Maeirhoffer/Allado/Reavis/Raymundo = Sampayan Defense(la ako maisip eh =D)

6. Cyrus/LA/Bonbon/tim cone(pa triangle siya with faces of the players dun sa bawat edges, then tim cone's face sa middle with question mark) = kaw na magisip ng title

What if, you make a History section there like Slam magazine's Old School section? For sure we would like to hear stories of the greatest players, the greatest events, and all those stuff that gets forgotten with time. What do you think?
