Thursday bullets starring Kiefer Ravena, Johnny Abarrientos, and the PBA’s greatest forgotten point guard

I got a text message late last night from a basketball insider asking if I wanted to get a couple of drinks, and on a whim, I said yes. He was meeting a friend, he said, one of his idols. It turned out that we were going to be drinking with one of the best point guards in Philippine basketball history, a two-time NCAA Most Valuable Player, a former PBA rookie of the year, and the record-holder for most assists in a single game, dropping 28 dimes.

I would argue that at this point guard’s very best, he was every bit as good as Johnny Abarrientos, and he was right up there with any court general who ever took to the PBA floor. Unfortunately, his very best didn’t last for very long, and he’s the first to admit that he battled some personal demons which prevented him from realizing all his potential.

I kept asking him PBA-related questions, and he answered them good-naturedly, although he refused to let me write about him, saying all of those things are in the past now.

Do you know who I’m talking about? The answer in the second to the last bullet below.

  • Interesting stuff from Twitter (that does not involve me): PBA stats guru Fidel Mangonon III shares that senior scribes are speculating that former FEU head coach Glen Capacio was not really diagnosed with high blood pressure in the middle of game 2 of the UAAP finals, but rather he was fired at halftime. Former PBL commissioner Chino Trinidad, most of whose tweets are in ALL CAPS, also weighs in a bit.

  • More Twitter funny business (also not involving me): GMANews.TV reported that Kiefer Ravena had committed to Ateneo after the star high school prospect posted something to that effect on Twitter. Turns out that the twitter account @kieferravena15 isn’t his actual account; you can find him at @kieferravena. His dad Bong Ravena corrects the report, saying they’ve yet to decide Kiefer’s next step. I’ve been hearing interesting things that, unfortunately, I couldn’t share just yet.

  • Mikkel Bolante of Patay ang Butiki makes his debut on FHM writing about the NCAA stepladder final four. Also, update your bookmarks because their blog has a new URL: www.patayangbutiki.net. Now if only they can provide more than once a month updates.

  • Johnny Abarrientos looks like he might be headed back to Alaska. It’d be cool to see him in the lineup backing up Alaska’s new ace point guard, LA Tenorio.

  • Kris Aquino tweets that she, Joshua, and Baby James are recovering from foot-and-mouth disease. Just passing it along.

  • I really enjoyed Inquirer’s short pieces on rookies Shawn Weinstein and Jimbo Aquino. I’m not sure if these were also published in the paper, or if they were online-only, but it was a good job by two of Inquirer’s new sportswriters, Mark Giongco and Celest Flores. Hopefully these short, blog-style snapshots go on throughout the season; there’s certainly much interest in pieces like these.

Perhaps the bosses at INQUIRER.net can also consider putting up a sports blog to complement their longer reports, similar to the New York Times’ Off the Dribble NBA blog, where their beat writers Howard Beck, Jonathan Abrams, and others contribute short posts apart from their full reports and columns.

  • The PBA record-holder for most assists in a game is Eugene Quilban, who did it with 7-Up in 1992. That same year, he teamed up with import Dell Demps, now the general manager of the New Orleans Hornets, to carry 7-Up to the reinforced conference finals. They ended up losing to Tony Harris and the Swift Mighty Meaties, but considering that 7-Up was the Barako of that era, that was a pretty awesome feat.

  • Let me end this post with some non-basketball stuff. Here’s my buddy Johnoy Danao with his first music video, Ulan:

alam mo bang me tito akong PBA player? di ko alam kung kilala mo. naning valenciano. hahahaha. kateam nya si quilban kaya familiar ako. i used to watch pba sa ringside. asa us na tito ko. :) and yes, wala ako nung basketball prowess nya.

Wow, tito mo si Naning Valenciano? Astig yun, sharpshooter. Kasama nga sya sa 7-Up nun ni Quilban. I think I saw him in a report on one of those PBA legends tours in the US.

napanood ko siya sa purefoods. deadly shooter, kasabayan ni ponky alolor. bago si pido jarencio, siya ang certified shooter noong panahon niya sa purefoods.

I remember your Tito. Ludovico Valenciano. If my memory serves me right, he played for La Salle and the other Cojuangco teams--NCC and Lagerlite. He was always the designated shooter on his teams--before Caidic and Lim hooked up with Jacobs. I remember team would set up a myriad of screens to get him his shots.

I knew it before I scrolled. It's Eugene Quilban. Hit a lot of miracle shots while playing for Davao Eagles in 1998. Can't recall though where he went in 1999 kasi Donbel Belano replaced him.

Wala pa ako kamuwang muwang sa PBA nung time ni Quilban, pero sa MBA ko sya napanood at talagang magaling. Parang Ronnie Magsanoc with less shooting, more speed. Hindi ba meron syang kaso, harrasment or rape (?) tapos nung bumalik sya sa MBA, naghabol ung complainant or something to that effect.

I remember Eugine Quilban playing for Mobiline alongside Lowell Briones (insert Rita Magdalena joke here). Very consistent na lumalabas 'to sa PBA top 10/20 plays!

And yeah, I caught him play for the Davao Eagles as well. One of those underrated PG's in the pros.

Kris loves to use twitlonger and is too busy and too important to follow anyone. Get well soon baby James and Josh. :-))

I knew it was Quilban.
sayang talaga yan.
pero tama, he was facing a rape case at that time. ano ang latest, jaemark?
#4.1 jaemark on 2010-10-08 13:56 (Reply)
He says he stopped playing after a contract dispute between him, the Eagles, and Sta. Lucia. Di ko naman matanong deretso tungkol sa rape case.

He was with the SMC All-Stars a few years back, but it looks like he's put basketball behind him.

Yeah Eugene Quiban a nephew of cycling great Domingo Quilban and King Stag of the NCAA..He was a promising point guard ..too bad he did not make it big in the PBA,,Sayang talaga..another one of those NCAA greats and there are lots of them ...collegiate MVP'S but a failure in the play for pay league..
#8 Redmanizer d' great on 2010-10-08 12:06 (Reply)
On second thought at least he was a rookie of the year on a draft that made Alex Araneta..whoah remember that lanky guy whose passport to fame aside from his 6-6 frame was his famous surname..but Eugene has so much promise..more was expected from this crack guard..
#9 Jeff Tagle on 2010-10-08 14:56 (Reply)
glen was really rushed to med city that day.

as for kiever, they're choosing between Ateneo and US, with NU and LaSalle moving heaven and earth to get him.

I think what Kris and her children have is "hand, foot and mouth disease" a virus that commonly affects infants and children. I think she mistook it for the hyphenated "foot-and-mouth disease" that affects cattle. Hahaha.
#11 weckl on 2010-10-09 14:21 (Reply)
I also guessed Quilban right. I saw him play even when he was with SSC. For me he was the best point in the amateurs and was expected to carry on the show to the PBA. He didn't shoot the ball too well from the outside but he had enough skills to dominate like Abbarientos. Sayang.

Great post jae. It's good to know that people still remember Eugene Quilban and his career as a basketball player. He is my maternal half-uncle fyi so thanks for keeping things real guys hehe. We're not that close to him though. Back in the day, my dad, sister and I used to watch him play live at PBA venues. The last time we saw him was in the hospital where his dad was confined and passed away after several days. Our condolonces to him and his family. :-/
