The PBA’s three-conference format: Is it the answer?

I wasn’t really all that excited about the return of the three-conference format for the PBA. I kinda liked the long, slow burn of having two conferences, and how each championship became much more meaningful because there were only two tournaments each year. I suppose I’m in the minority, judging by the comments compiled by Patricia Hizon, when it comes to this. I always suspected I was among the very few who enjoy watching random meaningless Air 21-Barako Bull regular season games. It takes a certain kind of unhealthy obsessiveness, I suppose, to run a sports blog like this one.

There’s also the matter of injuries. I always suspected that the three-conference format, with such a short offseason, contributed to players missing significant court time because they don’t have an opportunity to let their bodies heal. While there are the freaks like Robert Jaworski, Mon Fernandez, and Alvin Patrimonio who have shown incredible durability, I could rattle off names of PBA stars who have missed long stretches of time over several seasons due to injuries: Bogs Adornado, Abe King, Ricky Brown, Dondon Ampalayo, Hector Calma, Samboy Lim, Allan Caidic, Ronnie Magsanoc, Benjie Paras, Bong Alvarez, Vergel Meneses, Vince Hizon, Kenneth Duremdes, Bal David, Danny Ildefonso, Danny Seigle, Eric Menk. And those are just the stars, off the top of my head.

Of course, one could argue that a lot of those guys were just simply injury-prone, and that could be true. But the year-long schedule couldn’t have helped.

I don’t think the measure, touted by media as The Big Idea from new commissioner Chito Salud, is the silver bullet it’s being made out to be. The PBA has a lot of problems, and I’m not sure playing more tournaments solves them.

That said, I think that the handicapping system being proposed for the second import conference is an inspired idea, and I take my hat off to Salud, or whoever it is in the Commissioner’s Office that came up with the plan. Under the proposal, the top four teams will be allowed imports as tall as 6’2”, the next four teams will be allowed 6’4” imports, while the last two teams can suit up 6’6” guys. I’m particularly excited because we might be seeing the return of Tony Harris-types in the PBA.

Question: What’s the single coolest possibility about a PBA tournament with a 6’2” height limit?

Well, here’s your answer:

Allen Iverson

(Don’t laugh. He might be available!)

UPDATE: Alaska coach Tim Cone left a very insightful comment arguing against handicapping:

I, for one, am certainly against the handicapping, Jaemark. All the handicapping does is reward mediocrity--"I can be bad all year and have no need to get better so that I can have a chance to win in the last conference." We already have teams in the league that are more concerned about making money from selling their players than winning basketball games or championships. With the handicapping, now those teams will be able to have their cake and eat it too. If nothing else, all the handicapping is going to do is perpetuate a very bad system that has been in a place for a few years now. Horrible idea, in my opinion.

Very interesting. What do you guys think?

Constant innovation or recycled ideas? A very early look at the PBA under Chito Salud
I let out a chuckle when I read the blurb for Chito Salud’s appearance on the GMANews.TV sports show FTW, which said that the new commissioner’s mantra is “constant innovation.” It was funny because so far, the only real innovation under his tenure has be

3 conferences is just too much basketball for me, I must admit medyo nakakasawa. Plus, I also like how the schedule of the tournaments meshes with the FIBA calendar.

The only way I would be in favor of 3 conferences is if the third conference were significantly different in format from the other two conferences- say make it an invitational tournament including other Asian teams

And sir Cone is Talking about ahem??? Gee, it makes me wonder what will happen to the PBA 5 years from now, I'm losing my interst, from the SMC league (I hate what happened to Artadi, pinagpasapasahan ba naman???) up to the "air 21 business"(good luck sa top 3 picks nila)... I want to experience the crispa toyota legacy my pop is talkin about everytime were watchin games... Sir cone is 100% right, err... anong team kaya ang magiging Miami Heat ng PBA kung sakali??

Mawalang galang na po coach Tim Cone, were you a beneficiary of the handicapping system last conference? If I'm not mistaken you got a 6'8" import on a conference with 6'6" limit. And yet you made it to the finals the conference before that. :-))
#4.1 The Derby Ace King on 2010-09-21 19:14 (Reply)
what a stupid jerk you are Rodolfo Obniana, why don't you go to whoever measured the imports and show us your proof that Simpson is 6'8", there is no medicine made yet for stupidity, you heard mere speculations and you're now so brave to accuse Alaska about their import? and who are those who questioned Simpson's height if I may ask? Jong Uichico who got whipped at the queater-finals, his trigger assitant coach Allan Caidic who's not only good at shooting 3's but also shooting dumbness, another guy named Ryan Gregorio, but have anyone shown any proof? NO! And why couldn't they stop Simpson from playing since this accusations are made. Why didn't they submit any formal complaint? could it be by doing so will only make them look stupid? tell me, why did Alaska made it to the finals and won the championship with Simpson still playing? Have you got any brain mister?

these are SMC team (BGK/DAL) coaches, good thing the team Alaska pummeled at the finals kept quiet (for what I know). now if Sipmson really is a 6'8" player, maybe, just maybe Sonny Thoss grew 2 inch taller since last time I know Sonny is 6'7" and side by side he is taller than Simpson, just watch the classic game 5 finale where both player walk side by side after their victory and be the judge who is taller.

Courtesy of Youtube/guessboy32:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nh7NDkmx9ss&feature=related

07:49. start with the chest bump, who's taller then, maybe Alaska also cheated with Sonny's height, no? Do you have anything that will say Diamond Simpson is taller than 6'7" Sonny Thoss? I bet you don't

What Tim Cone said is absolutely true, teams who sell players one conference after another now have their way with this disgusting handicapping rule. no wonder more and more fans are starting to hate the PBA.

You'll find proof right in this blog. The Pre-Draft measurements (the link given to us by Rafe Bartholomew).

#5.2.1 Rodolfo Obniala on 2010-09-21 22:53 (Reply)
Kahit nabasa mo Pacific Rims eh na-publish kaya yun before pa ng kadugasan ni Simpson. Walang koneksyon yun.
#5.2.1.1 Enki on 2010-09-22 00:58 (Reply)
... AT... sinukat si simpson na may representative ang bawat team... hindi sila nagreklamo nung una... tapos after nung reklamo nila... sinukat uli... nakitang 6'5" 3/4 talaga... lumabas yung news na "barrios clears simpson to play" may nagreklamo pa ba pag katapos nun? wala na diba? ano pang problema dun?
#5.2.1.1.1 Rodolfo Obniala on 2010-09-22 08:17 (Reply)
Mali interpretasyon mo tol. Diamon was not measured below 6'6". Yan figure na yan, they made it up. What really happened was the witnesses from other teams allowed an overheight import because they thought hindi niya matatagalan yung competition sa PBA. At correction lang, Simpson was never re-measured. Barrios said that the 6'5"+ measurement will hold up kasi yun ang nameasure na height, which was both erroneous and neglectful.
#5.2.1.1.1.1 Rodolfo Obniala on 2010-09-22 08:33 (Reply)

http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-pre-draft-measurements/?page=&year=2009&source=All&sort2=DESC&draft=0&pos=0&sort=

that chart shows that Simpson is 6'7.5" without shoes. The NBA measurements were done in 2009. Tell me someone made up those data (which contains other players' measurement, maybe hundreds or thousands of them) just to screw the Aces. That's very unlikely.

This is the last time I'm ever gonna post about this topic.

Dude, NBA hopefuls often exaggerate their heights.

They bothered to file complaints, they bothered to attend Simpson's re-measurement... kung talagang lampas sya sa height limit, malamang magrereklamo yung mga nagreklamo nung una.

"What really happened was the witnesses from other teams allowed an overheight import because they thought hindi niya matatagalan yung competition sa PBA."

actually, those observing the height measurement of imports are mere observers. their prostest were not entertained. when coach Allan spoke up, the Alaska representative quickly stepped in and the PBA OFFICIALLY listed Simpson's height... all the while they couldnt get his head to tilt up like normal measurements.
but this is in no way to discredit Alaska's triumph. just the facts. they really deserve to be champions because they played the best.

granting, sir/ma'am, that that was the case, may we know what's the proper SOP when those things occur? i mean, if they have a decent reason to protest and it went like that, was that it? are there no proper avenues for protests like that, or were there no other choice to hinder simpson from being listed as alaska's import then?

if it would seem so, then we now know why there are so many questions regarding the league.

Even GABE FREEMAN is listed 6'8" in nbdl/draftexpress site but it turned out that he is just 6'5+" same thing with Diamon.

At natatawa talaga ko until now there are still people riding to that "allegations".

Alaska didn't bend any rule on hiring Diamon.

I don't care if this league is becoming an smc/mvp league, all I am hoping for is to have A FAIR LEAGUE, fair for all for rich teams, for average teams and for beggar teams.

PBA need GOOD & REAL trade/salary cap policies.

PBA's new commissioner want to lead the league into greater heights but it looks like he's doing another back-step.

6'6" or even unlimited height of import will do. Or since they revert the old format of 3 conferences, might as well do the 2nd conf. smaller import and 3rd conf. taller import FOR ALL TEAMS (no handicapping please).

I am not afraid that Alaska can stay competitive at any set-up they will make (w/ handicapping or whatever) para sa aking lang AYOKO NG BINEBEYBI ANG MGA TALUNAN.

1. Among the 3 categories/champions, which has more weight. The prestige doesnt last long enough for the team to enjoy and bask on it.
2. No more height limit. If you want to challenge pinoy or fil-am players and coaching staff, bring in tall imports. Let them think of ways (legal ha ü) to win under these circumstances since basketball is ultimately a game where height is might.

Talents are indispensible but players can be disposed off easily...so dont be too comfortable where you are now.

Anyway, you have 3 options for greatness.

I don't agree on HANDICAPPING RULE, it just gives the losers more reason to excuse themselves from playing at their best.

Let's say Team 9 and Team 10 has 2-6 W-L record and the Team 8 has 5-4 record, since Team 9 & 10 has no chance to avoid their "elimination" sigurado they will not treat their game 9th and 10th para sigurado na yung slot nila sa bottom 2, to avail the 6'6" AND UP imports. Para naman ini-spoil ang mga talunan pag nagkataon.

A.I. playing in the PBA I like but super impossible.
*3-conference (with shorter 2nd and 3rd) - ilike!

*handicapping system - no way! para naman pinalilimusan yung mga pulubi sa PBA. Teach them how to fish "wins" on a fair way.

And limiting the import to about 6'2", well I don't think PBA teams can still found the likes of Tony Harris, Kwan Johnson and Lamont Strothers. They'll be good but they will never be explosive as in scoring at 50s or even at 35s in regular night. PBA is already bannered with LOCAL HEAVY SCORERS/SHOOTERS, what the team really needs is an import that can INTIMIDATE opposing team and be the giant man on the middle.

I'm for Chris Alexander, Devin Davis, Terquin Mott and Diamon Simpson, Gabe Freeman and Shawn Daniels import type, it is easier to found bulky imports who can have a double-double performance every night.
#13 Will on 2010-09-22 13:32 (Reply)
It's almost impossible to 'cheat' imports measurements since the pba does it by having a player lying down in a box w/ 2 poeple holding down a player's knee(the favorite cheat practice in older days). neck hunching is also not possible in this procedure.

And caidic was there to watch simpson's measurment procedure. if he was over the limit, why didn't he raise a howl right there and then?

Isn't it possible that draftexpress can come up w/ erroneous measurements??
#13.1 Enki on 2010-09-22 14:06 (Reply)
Kasi sa states ang goal nila is magpatangkad unlike dito na may hinahabol na height limit... pwede mo ilagay yung weight mo sa harap ng paa mo para makapagtip toe ka ng konting konti... yung tipong hindi nakalapat yung buto ng heels mo sasahig pero yung flesh nakadikit pa sa floor... you can stretch your neck though i dont know how that would look like... kasi at 6'6" undersized si simpson para maging powerforward... pahiga din ba sila sinukat sa states?
#14 Enki on 2010-09-22 13:46 (Reply)
#15 Will on 2010-09-22 13:54 (Reply)
6'4 and below imports who would be wing players would just take away playing time from our locals - whose strongest positions are the 2 and 3 spots.

Why not just get imports who play 4 and 5 - proverbial weak positions for pba teams. Plain silly.
#16 Will on 2010-09-22 14:01 (Reply)
The 6'4 import limit just puts more credence that the pba in an smc league. How tall is Freeman? Yup, just a hair under 6'4.

So will new commish ever do something about the overpriced rosters of smb, bgk, bmeg and tnt?

How about player transfers between sister teams and rich teams buying players from lesser teams?

The same teams that can't beat a team that actually stays w/in the rules of the pba and instead accuse this other team of bringing in an import that's over the height limit? Pathetic.
#17 bigpedro on 2010-09-23 11:00 (Reply)
Add my vote to the other people who are against height limits for imports. Useless naman yung height limit. Maybe a salary limit for imports though?
#17.1 Will on 2010-09-23 13:43 (Reply)
There already is a salary cap for imports w/c if i'm correct is around 14k usd a month.

It's an open secret though that rich teams pay their imports more than that. we can't get really good imports to play here for 14k a month.
#18 splitzapper on 2010-09-23 11:12 (Reply)

But having no height limit naman does not guarantee na puso centers and power forwards na lang ang kunin. In the end quality pa din and mananaig.

#19 KG21 on 2010-09-23 14:01 (Reply)
#20 Carlo on 2010-09-23 14:08 (Reply)
sa akin lang, tanggalin na lang dapat yung height limit sa imports. kesa sa nagkakadayaan lang, tanggalin na lang yun dapat totally. i think it will be good for our players' development kasi matututo tayong kumuha ng rebounds and defend against bigger players.
#21 Eagle_Eye on 2010-09-23 15:47 (Reply)
I wonder what went wrong with these PBA gods when they decided to impose this old format. We already knew that we're lagging behind the international scene due to the fact na hindi tayo sanay makipagsabayan sa mga matatanggkad. Why not remove the height limit para mawala yung "gulat" factor naten at masanay tayo na kalaban malalaki. That way pag may international competitions, hindi tayo magdadahilan na kesyo masyado malalaki kalaban

Thinking out of the box.

The formula of having a competitive team today is having a tall lineup, kaya kung kompetensiya ang tunay na habol ng PBA (which will result to gate attendance) mas mabuting matatangkad ang imports, ng mas ma-challenge ang mga locals to be more creative on slashing downlow and escaping the elastikman-arms of the import.

Tapos mas ma-eencourage pa yung mga pure shooters to nailed their long shots to avoid the heavy traffic downlow.

No to midget-imports.
