Air 21 leads the clusterfuck that was the 2010 PBA rookie draft

At the start of the 2010 rookie draft, the PBA played yet another video tribute for Customs commissioner, former PBA board chairman, and former Air 21 team manager Lito Alvarez. With a smug grin on his face – you know, like he had just gotten away with cheating on a round of golf – Alvarez claimed proudly that because of his “savvy” moves, it was the first time that a team, Air 21, had the top three picks in the rookie draft.

Of course, he left out the part that the Express had the second-worst record in the league last year, behind only Barako Bull, a franchise that could barely pay its players. He also left out the fact that under his watch, the Express has been perhaps the most miserable franchise in the league for the past decade, never getting past the quarterfinals stage in the All-Filipino tournaments, and only getting through to the advanced stages of the import conferences after lucking out with imports Steven Thomas and Shawn Daniels.

Meanwhile, Alvarez and his team served as pimps in one lopsided trade after another for their marquee players, while also acting as conduit in almost every sham trade between sister teams. Of course, the PBA’s board will act blind about these trades – their teams, after all, are the beneficiaries in these transactions – ignoring the fact that this is a major, major problem for the league. These trades have steadily eroded fans’ interest in the league, and have helped turn off people who would be supporting the PBA but who tune in elsewhere instead. Alvarez and Air 21 have cost the PBA and its teams millions of pesos – they just haven’t quantified it yet.

For that, they give him a plaque.

Anyway, what a weirdo PBA draft, with Alvarez’s fingerprints all over it. Let’s take a look at how it went down.
  1. Air 21 – Nonoy Baclao

I’ve talked up Baclao in a previous post, and I actually am higher on Nonoy than his Ateneo frontcourt mate Rabeh Al-Hussaini. But there’s something fishy about this move, and one couldn’t help but think that there’s something here that more than meets the eye.

  2. Air 21 – Rabeh Al-Hussaini

Rabeh said all the right things in his TV interview, saying he doesn’t care where he gets picked. But in a tweet, PBA super-insider Fidel Mangonon III says that Al-Hussaini took it as an insult that he was taken second. There’s already buzz that he’ll get traded to one of the MVP teams before the start of the season. If this were a fantasy basketball league, we’d all have kicked Air 21 out by now.

  3. Air 21 – Rey Guevarra

This was a bit of a reach, but actually, I think Guevarra – if he’s healthy after his ACL injury, which is a pretty big if – can become an elite PBA player. Yeng Guiao’s the perfect coach for him, and because he’s played heavy minutes for Louie Alas, you know that he’s a warrior. My only concern is that he’s never been a main man on his team, because he has deferred to RJ Jazul throughout his high school and college career. I think my Bong Ravena projection for him is just about right.

  4. Alaska (via Talk N Text) – Elmer Espiritu

Alaska traded Larry Fonacier to Talk N Text for the chance to draft Espiritu. I don’t know about this trade; Espiritu doesn’t seem like a Tim Cone-type of player, while Fonacier is. Then again, I’m gonna go out on a limb here when I say that he’s gonna be better than Burtscher.

  5. Rain or Shine – Josh Vanlandingham

Dwight Lago 2.0 is a nice addition to RoS’s young core. Apart from getting a knockdown shooter, the Elastopainters also get a guy to hang out with Gabe Norwood and Sol Mercado. I expect lots of tweets about the trio grabbing dinner at Wingman at the Collective.

  6. Air 21 – Sean Anthony

After the draft, it was reported that Anthony was traded along with Renren Ritualo to Powerade. Which was a surprise – the Tigers actually made a good trade! The broadcast also showed clips of Anthony playing in the rookie camp with a broken nose, still diving for loose balls and working his butt off.

  7. Ginebra – John Wilson

Wilson joins Jong Uichico’s Barangay Ginebra security agency. I was talking about how Wilson needed to land with the right team to bring out his full potential, and I don’t know if this is the right team for him. On the bright side, he can hang out with Ronald Tubid who can show him where to get all those kick-ass tattoos.

  8. Ginebra – Jimbo Aquino

50 bucks says Aquino will end up in San Miguel with his adoptive father, Ato Agustin. Pustahan o?

  9. Derby Ace – Pari Llagas

I groaned out loud when this pick was announced – I was hoping the team would draft “So Cool” Jazul. I just don’t know if Llagas can play at this level, he was already pretty undersized in college. Maybe Llagas reminded new Derby Ace coach Jorge Gallent of a young, strapping Richard del Rosario?

  10. Meralco (via Alaska) – Shawn Weinstein

Weinstein was impressive in the rookie camp, and had a stint in Europe. But I’m more intrigued by the other side of this trade: Meralco traded Bonbon Custodio to Alaska for this pick. First, Alaska played a smash-mouth, macho game to dispose of San Miguel in the finals a couple of weeks ago, now they’ve got run-and-gunners in the lineup in Cyrus Baguio, Elmer Espiritu, Bonbon Custodio, et. al. I think Tim Cone is turning into Yeng Guiao. He’s even got Yeng’s old backup point guard, Topex Robinson. If Coach Tim starts tweeting in Kapampangan, don’t be surprised.

  11. Meralco – Bambam Gamalinda

I like Coach Ryan Gregorio and all, but this pick is just… meh. I’ve watched a ton of San Beda games, and Gamalinda just has a tendency to float around the perimeter too often. Also, can we take away his “Bambam” nickname and give it to Ogie Menor? Ogie doesn’t look like an “Ogie”, he looks more like a “Bambam”, especially with his fro-hawk. Alright, I’m babbling.

  12. Ginebra – Rob Labagala

What is it with Coach Jong Uichico reaching for a point guard in the draft every time? Did he make a panata to the Nazareno to draft a borderline PBA point guard prospect way too high every couple of years? Labagala, Macky Escalona, and Paolo Hubalde should start a club or something.

  13. Derby Ace – Val Acuña

For the record, I liked this pick, and I think Val could play in the PBA. Also, between Val Sotto and Val Iglesias, you know you can’t go wrong with a guy named Val. I still would’ve wanted the team to draft Jazul, but it looks like Derby Ace is trading for a veteran point guard.

  14. Meralco – Ford Arao

What the hell, is Manny Pangilinan drafting for this team?

  15. Rain or Shine (via Alaska) - RJ Jazul

Wow, great work by Rain or Shine. Jazul can play beside Sol Mercado, and he can also back him up. And they only had to give up a second round pick next year. Except for the Mark Telan signing last year, Rain or Shine has been a really well-run operation over the last couple of years hasn’t it? Especially since they don’t have the monster budget of SMC or MVP teams.

  16. Meralco – Khasim Mirza

Naubusan na yata ako ng jokes.

  17. Barako Bull - Borgy Hermida

Barako continues its build-up to win a championship… in the PBL-Liga Pilipinas Tournament of the Philippines. See, that’s a recycled joke from last year.

  18. Powerade (via Air 21) – Jai Reyes

Mwahahahahahahahahahaha! Mwahahahahahahahahahaha! Mwahahahahahahahahahaha! Mwahahahahahahahahahaha! Mwahahahahahahahahahaha! Mwahahahahahahahahahaha!

(Sorry. I thought I had good jokes, but Powerade’s joke was better.)

What the?! Jai Reyes has a better shot at being a co-host on GMA7 than as a quality PBA backup point guard. Also, last year, Coke had a point guard line of Alex Cabagnot and Chris Ross. At this point, they have a backcourt rotation of Marvin Cruz, Paolo Mendoza, Chico Lanete, and Jai Reyes. Guys, do you think we ought to take the label “The Genius” from Ryan Gregorio and give it to Bo Perasol?

  19. Powerade – pass

Air 21’s night was weird, but this was the most dumbfounding move of the night: the Express were about to pass on their pick, but Powerade trades for it instead. Then on the very next pick… Powerade passes! Sheer genius!

  20. Air 21 – pass

  21. Alaska - Marvin Hayes

I like Hayes as a player – check out a nice little feature on him last year by Rick Olivares for Rebound Magazine – and I hope he sticks with Alaska. Also, I hope Andy Jao doesn’t make a “same color” joke about him when he gets into the game.

sean anthony not washington! haha

Yes, i missed the tv coverage of the draft but i heard rabeh was pouting even as he was putting his jacket on centerstage, but thats just the he really is. haha he really did say he was insulted.

TNT and Air21 had a gentleman's agreement not to take espiritu because he was going to be traded for fonacier. so turns out rey guevarra got quite lucky, and it helps too that allan gregorio their new team manager worked with him alot in Gilas and saw how much he has improved as a player. Too bad he never got to see much court time though. I think he will be a good pba player.

i watched the draft on tv, and rabeh's obviously upset over what happened. even though he was saying good things while being interviewed by magoo (he said that the draft position does not matter, as long as he gets picked), his expression and how he said it says otherwise...

rabeh and nonoy almost came to blows at practice during their days @ ateneo. accdg to an ateneo insider, their relatioship as teammates wasn't good to begin with. i guess this was also a factor as to why rabeh felt so insulted. its not just for not being picked first, but also because of the guy picked ahead of him...

The guys were roommates in college. Did you see them hug after the 2009 championship? How about them exchanging tips on post moves during practice today?

I don't know where GMA News got that report.

as the article mentioned, the animosity between the two seemed to have ended after the 2nd title, which was in '09...

anyways, rabeh doesn't really have a choice but to accept what has happened. like what the air 21 exec said, he should just take it as a challenge...

personally, i think bmeg passed on another alapag in weinstein... pari llagas?? who the heck is this guy??? did the bmeg management left their brains at home?? sorry to say this pero gallent is turning out to be worst than gregorio... llagas is an undersized forward... so are looking for a replacement for salvador?? how dumb can they be?? and who the heck is acuna?? i don't care if he's a shooter, but i don't approve of his drafting... he could have just retired or played elsewhere but not bmeg.. he'll be another larong that's for sure...
as for the trade that involves jonas villanueva, wtf?!?! bakit?? he's not that good... kaya lang nagmukhang magaling yan kase magaling din ang team niya (san miguel)... put him in air 21 or in rain or shine and you'll see na subpar din yan... that's how dumb the management is for not picking weinstein... hope bmeg gets burned this season para magsisi.. ang tatanga e...

Not a good start coach gallent.

I think the game for SMB group is in the trading/fixing table! So what if they foul it up in the draft? They have the money that can buy talents.

Coke/Powerade never changes, year after year the same blunders in the trades and picks. I just hope the Ritualo/Anthony trade works, for the sake of the league.

Even if AIR21 has no intention to pass on the 18th pick .... POWERADE trades up ONE SLOT just to get Jai Reyes ?? Then passes on their original 19th pick ?? WTF is that ?!

It's bad enough they got Marvin Cruz as their starting / closing PG ..... whose only claim to fame was a strong opening game during his last UAAP season .... they now get Jai Reyes, who actually makes a rookie Paul Artadi look like Micheal Jordan.

Maybe I should start throwing tomatoes at Bo Perasol the next time I see him here in our Laguna neighborhood.

Bo "the Genius" Perasol

I was also watchin in on solar tv and was surprised to learn that Powerade passed on their original pick.
At first i thought it was a good move considering they got 2 picks in the 2nd round (they were very vocal on getting additional picks days before the draft day).
The moment they passed on their supposedly 2nd pick that's when i thought Perasol was indeed out his mind.

whoa there... jervy cruz, a bust? no way man! he might have had a bad start, but he's had some good games at the latter part of the fiesta cup. and besides, expectations weren't (or shouldn't be) that high on him. everyone knows that he is way undersized for his position. no one in his right mind should expect that he can replicate his 20ppg-10rpg line in the pba. i guess you were one of those who expected that.lolz...
#16 freakyfranky on 2010-08-30 23:48 (Reply)
I think the role of llagas for bmeg will be similar to the tall-nut of plant vs. zombies, nakatayo lang. Pero kung bangko sya, wall-nut.

Maybe if gregorio was still the coach of bmeg he might've chosen either jazul or weinstein to solve the back up point guard woes of the team.

Jai reyes? Jai reyes? he's very lucky that he even got drafted. Maybe he should try becoming a court side reporter after a conference or two.
#16.1 The Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-08-31 08:43 (Reply)
lol you're not informed and updated.

BMEG badly needs inside players because pingris and kerby may be sidelined for a long, long while because of injuries.

that's why they drafted a power forward and will trade for mamaril.

True. Maybe someone forgot to watch the Rain or Shine - Derby Ace quarterfinals. Jervy hit some crucial shots in that series.
#18 Junior tubero on 2010-08-31 10:55 (Reply)
Yeah Jervy even was named Player of the Game in one of their games in the quarters.

Jervy could not replicate his 20ppg 10rebs. line when he was still in the UAAP. but 10ppg 8rebs is possible for him. he should be mentored by someone like Patrimonio.

#19.1 junior tubero on 2010-08-31 15:48 (Reply)
Emman Monfort can have a spot in a PBA team. but Jai? i have my doubts if he can last long.

konting siko sa sikmura galing kay Arboleda or shoulder shove from Tubid. baka maiyak yan. :)
#19.1.1 Mon on 2010-08-31 17:31 (Reply)
Jai could do a Steve Kerr while Monfort could do a Muggsy Bogues - though it's really bordering on absurdity, at best.

Stretching it backwards, I can't imagine these guys matching up against Jaworski, Rudy Distrito, Dante Gonzalgo and Onchie Dela Cruz.

For now, if ever they actually crack a PBA team roster, Arboleda, Roger Yap, et al. would be more than willing to orient them.

I agree sa'yo sir, sobrang nakakabaliw ang Air21. Hanggang kailan kaya sila magtatagal diyan sa PBA, every conference predictable na moves nila, they are making this league their milking cow. Ano ba klaseng image gusto nilang iwan sa isip ng basketball panatikos.

Kaya kami we don't patronize AIR21 services LBC kami o DHL.

After one conference or even before the 1st conference ends sigurado one of AIR21's pick will join either MVP's or SMC's team. haynaku naman paawat na sila.

I'm bit sad losing another ace Larry, pero siyempre I support the Alaska pa din and I think they got pretty decent acquisitions it looks like Coach Tim is willing to speed up the pace & inject more excitement with Cyrus, Bonbon and Elmer. My Alaska is ready to go, only the 11th-12th slot are left unfilled. I wany KELVIN DELA PEñA to be included on the 12-man of Alaska.

Hmm. I'm from Ateneo but I never liked Rabeh's attitude and arrogance to begin with. He was clearly a headcase, as even Black would likely attest to. But he's a hard worker, especially when fine tuning his game. (Also something Black would attest to)

While I've always waited for someone to smack Al Husseini upside the head and instill some humility into him, what Air21 did reeks of power tripping. To show him "who's boss" and to sensationalize their picks.

It's likely true that they were doing this to "teach him a lesson" by means of public humiliation. To what end? Couldn't this be achieved in more private ways? Al Husseini had done them no wrong at this point and while he needed a lesson in humility, what Air21 did (declare publicly that they were picking him first then switch on the day itself) lacked class and was an act of deception. He certainly didn't deserve it from them.

Now Norman Black, or Ateneo, who had to endure his ego, THEY would have the right to teach him a lesson because they have first hand experience.

If Air21 had taken him aside BEFORE the draft and explained to him that they were doing this, then it would have been simple. Lesson learned, and they would have given Al Husseini a chance to show he had class (if he did.) by deferring to his teammate. Which would have been good for ALL parties. The brand, for Baclao and for Rabeh.

Also, they could have just said they did it to emphasize DEFENSE. That they valued hustle more than stats, would have been a better message for the public AND Al Husseini (who wasn't much of a defender).
Not publicly declare they were teaching him a lesson. THAT was an act of power tripping. They were practically bragging to everyone that they wielded power and moral authority over these "employees." (Which they do, but only a dick boss BRAGS about it?)

The public humiliation was uncalled for.

I am a bigger fan of Baclao than Al Husseini. But even I have to concede Baclao isn't a first pick player.

I am not defending Al Husseini. what he said was classless and immature as well. But it started with a dick move by Air21. Let's just be clear that THEY were at fault as well.
#24.1 Mon on 2010-09-01 11:51 (Reply)
If down the road, Rabeh gets to prove his worth, realize his full potential before any formation of star complex, and leads Air21 to success, that draft day trick may just turn out to be a work-of-a-genius decision for Air 21.

But until that time, or if Rabeh would let it affect himself so bad that he can't get his game (and career) going, you're right, it was done in a bit of a bad taste.
#24.2 The Derby Ace King on 2010-09-01 13:57 (Reply)
I'll give my bold prediction about this team with, like you say, a dick boss (I agrre 101% Air21 big boss is a dick). They will not even be on the top 5 this coming All-Filipino, and even on Reinforced conferences. Maybe 6th at best.

You have teams like San Miguel, Alaska, Derby Ace, Talk n' Text, and Ginebra. I mean it's not really a prediction, just simple fact that any basketball fan should already know. Now next issue is also simple, take it on this team's reputation. I will not enumerate every single details, but the kind of reputation this team have explain it all. Yes they say they will not trade their rookies and they all signed 3 year contracts (Rabeh and Noy have max offer). But rest assured, these players will not last long to finish their contracts. Wanna make a bet? Who cares anyway? This is just (for me) for fun. But it's just sick. This is PBA and as a sports-fan, it has got to stop. Draft day itself, they are busy making trades for future picks, doesn't it make things very obvious. More future picks, more opportunity on trading players, which by then includes these new players they pick at the draft.

They will not be competitive this season, that's a given fact since they are as they say (blah, blah, blah) "rebuilding". But I predict in 3 years time, Air21 will remain one of the teams sulking at the bottom of the team standing, maybe not the last team, but i bet barely escaping the bottom of the pit.
