Love, hate, and the San Miguel Beermen

Jay Washington

I’ve steadily developed a dislike for San Miguel over the past couple of years. Despite the snarky tone of this blog, this is a rare case for PBA teams; even though I’ve been rooting for the Purefoods franchise since I was a child, I consider myself a fan of the PBA. I usually watch games intently when I’m home and they’re on, whoever might be playing. I like good Pinoy basketball, and the PBA is where you’d find the best Pinoy basketball anywhere.

That said, my dislike for the Beermen has grown steadily, but it wasn’t always this way. I loved watching San Miguel even back when Hector Calma was murdering my favorite player, Dindo Pumaren, in All-Filipino championship games. Like many other Filipino basketball fans, Samboy Lim was a favorite, but I also have a fond place in my basketball memories for the Atom Bomb, Ato Agustin. I respected the way “Robocop” Alvin Teng battled Jerry Codiñera underneath the boards, and how Yves Dignadice used his long arms to keep the ball away from Alvin Patrimonio on the block. I got a kick out of watching Ron Jacobs swallow his pride and hand over his whole offense to Nelson Asaytono, who indulged every urge to jack up contested, fadeaway three-pointers. I enjoyed watching Olsen Racela develop from a bench sparkplug for Purefoods into one of the best floor generals in Philippine basketball history for San Miguel. And I always thought that “Dynamite” Danny Seigle was the evolutionary Samboy, the player who took our collective breath away every time he stepped on the court, but couldn’t stay healthy enough to do it for long stretches of time.

So why do I hate* San Miguel so much?

* - Hate is a strong word, and I don’t usually like using it. In this context, I’m referring "sports-hate"; read Bill Simmons’ column on the topic for details.

Maybe it’s their players, although I’m a fan of guys like Dondon Hontiveros, Joseph Yeo, and Arwind Santos. I’d already written about my frustrations with Jay Washington, but he’s not the only one guilty of playing without heart. The whole lineup is filled with frontrunners – guys who are so much better when they are comfortably ahead than when they’re trailing or when the game is tight. It’s no coincidence that the team is always so dominant during the elimination phase, when it could overwhelm the opposition with its talent and blow other teams out of the court. But when the playoffs start, and the other team has scouted all their plays, and the games turn into dogfights, the Beermen fold like schoolyard bullies who’ve finally met someone who’ll stand up to them. In each of their playoff losses this season against Alaska and Purefoods, they got eliminated by teams that were tougher and more aggressive than they were.

Maybe it’s the media, and the way they hype the team and its “brand names.” I am so sick of sportscasters who’d go on and on in the middle of San Miguel games about just how talented the Beermen are. Fuck it, I would tell myself, if San Miguel were so good, then why don’t we just stop playing right now and give them the championship trophy at halftime? Also, when they talk about San Miguel’s “superstar-laden lineup,” what are they talking about? Because I look at the end of their bench and see guys like Dorian Pena, Mick Pennisi, and Denok Miranda. We’re calling those guys superstars now?

Maybe it’s their annoying fans. Ok, I have a lot of friends who are San Miguel fans, and they are generally smart, even-keeled people. But there are still those annoying, delusional fans online who have these Yankee sense of entitlement just because of the history of the team they’re rooting for, the type who’d keep arguing that Dondon Hontiveros is better than James Yap. Uhm, guys, how about, no?

Look, I’m a big fan of Dondon’s game, and I love that he’s the leader on the floor for the Beermen during big games but… no. And it’s not just because I’m a Purefoods fan. Here’s what I wrote last February about the two guys’ games:

Dondon Hontiveros is a great basketball player, and in so many respects, he is much better than James Yap; he’s a better ballhandler and passer (especially on pick-and-rolls), he’s a better defender, he’s a better rebounder off loose balls (although Yap might be a better rebounder when the ball is up in the air), and he’s a more accurate shooter when open (Yap is better when shooting with a hand in the face). But Yap has one big edge, an explosive first step that allows him to get to the ring easily, and makes him impossible to defend one-on-one. Hontiveros doesn’t have that explosion, so when he tries to take his man off the dribble, more often than not, he has to take the ball back out and settle for a jumper. This makes Yap infinitely more dangerous than Hontiveros, and allows him to have a much bigger impact on a basketball game.

Maybe it’s erstwhile coach Siot Tanquingcen, who’s been taking shit from San Miguel management all this time. C’mon, Siot, grow a fucking pair! When management spits on your face and you gladly take all of it meekly, some people will feel sorry for you, but most people will think you’re a doormat. Guess what happens to doormats? People walk all over them. Remember during the timeouts in game 2 of the series against Alaska, when you kept screaming at your players about the defensive rotations that you practiced that they weren’t following? They just looked at you without any reaction. That was them walking all over you.

Maybe it’s the management, and the ham-fisted manner it has “built up” this team, acquiring pieces that don’t fit with little regard for team chemistry, league rules, or just plain delicadeza. Their treatment of Siot Tanquingcen was bad, but it comes as little surprise to PBA observers the way the management has been running this team. Maybe that’s why when the Beermen end up losing in the playoffs, it’s instant schadenfreude for the rest of us.

Bel13ve! Alaska, the thinking fan’s team, wins championship #13 with heart
AFTER ITS semifinals series against Derby Ace, I thought San Miguel would have a very hard time in the finals going up against either Alaska or Talk N Text, who at the time were still to figure in a deciding seventh game in their own semifinals matchu

Alaska 1998 had a harder time finishing off SMB 1998 (in 2 consecutive conferences) that is basically Nelson Asaytono and the others than this supposedly superstar-laden SMB. Aside from Nelson that team included an aging Caidic and Villamin, a scrappy Freddie Abuda and yes Siot. But they played harder than the new SMB.

(I agree with the "delusional fans" who keep on yakking and cornering the comment box in Philippine Star. Fans who cannot move on.)

lipat nalang uli si Siot sa Ginebra, kahit assistant uli kay Jong. Jong will always stay as an SMC coach with his 8 titles. I don't know what Siot has to do to prove himself with the other SMC coaches who don't have any championships under their belts (at least from coaching experience and not from playing experience). I feel for Siot too; it isn't easy to balance playing time with lots of egos on your team.

I'm actually surprised with the write-up that just came out that Siot will take it as a soldier what the management throws at him. there's a thin line between being obedient and being a door mat as you've said.

yeah, I rooted for Alaska this time especially after the shit that Siot took.

sad fact of life is, this isn't the smc management of old where loyalties are valued and employees treated as family. it has now become a business and the Cojuangcos are no longer running the show. thats why maraming nangyayaring palakasan and sipisipan ngayon sa bagong management. trades are made without the coaches consent or a coaches vehement protest. ignored protests about trades which lead to championships for other franchises. in siot's case, the one assistant that he handpicked to help him out, freddie abuda, is made to sit behind the bench. he is a very nice guy and one of those loyal to the company and the cojuangco brothers. sadly, that is why the new regime treats him that way.

now we know kung bakit ganun ang SMB recently. whatever culture the management has (or turmoil, in this case) will just show on the court. nakapanghihinayang for the love of the game that it would have to come to this. I am sure SMB would have fought differently if things would have been better in the backstage. But I would not deny your comments on Jay Wash. Do you think he will still improve? Character is quite hard to change.

to the author:

why not include some players of SMB? the YANKEE-type mentality is also all over their heads..just being part of the franchise makes them feel that they are also champions of many battles but in reality they contributed NOTHING yet..a GREAT example is MR. ALEX CABAGNOT, oh mr. cabagnot you have a long way to go in manning the point for the mighty SMB led by olsen racela way back..how about let ur game do the talking not ur twitter TWITTING:=)

about player comparison, its a typical mentality of a fan to cheer or to like players in his/her team.. they often always justify the shortcomings just to level or to have an edge with the competition. the only way is to step out and be neutral for just a sec but we all know its hard to do..let them believe what they want to believe, nothing will change the fact that player A is and has always been a better player than player B..
#5 no namer on 2010-08-24 16:49 (Reply)
comparing dondon and j.yap is like comparing ray allen to kobe bryant.lol.

regarding the "front-runner" theme, i definitely agree with that. i think i have not seen this team win in a come from behind fashion (although they did it once against b-meg in the semis, i wasn't able to watch it). they easily lose focus once things go out of control. they're the opposite of their sister team ginebra, who always seem to find a way to make a game exciting, despite their "security agency" type of line-up. haha...

and re: the coaching brouhaha, its an epic mess, comparable to the coaching situation of the up fighting maroons (but i think up's situation has been fixed, am i right?). i'm sure its taking its toll as well on the players, not knowing who will be coaching them in the next game...

the past season has been very disappointing (especially for a fan like me). hopefully, the management could do something with this, cause if they don't, i'll probably jump ship and switch to alaska/derby ace instead...

I'm an SMB fan since the first day I loved basketball. I've seen the team as victors and as losers. You're correct with your observation about JayWash. Nakakainis when he's frustrated. I also don't like the fact that Cabagnot was put on the team. Especially nitong Finals, ang sama na ng laro nila yet pinilit pa rin sila sa loob. The team is loaded with Superstars but no heart. That's why I felt sorry with Gabe because he is the only one who showed heart last Final series.

Dondon and James are different players. Match-up wise, ang lamang lang ni Dondon is that his a better defender. Pero if you put Cyrus on him, hirap siya because of quickness. You see, it will differ on the match-up. James is a great player, a go-to-guy, and has 2 MVPs on his belt. Great 'O' and just good 'D'.

This coming Philippine Cup, I'll still root for my team SMB but if they will continue this 'thing' happening with them, wala ulit tayong mararating niyan and B-meg will get another All-Filipino championship. (bold prediction)

eto lang masasabi ko author.. kung hate mo SMB, mas hate ko BMEG/Purefoods mo 10x much more than you feel for SMB
#9 serbesa on 2010-08-25 10:06 (Reply)
Ang hirap kasi ang daming armchair coaches/analysts pag talunan sa championship. Hwag nang batikusin ang pumalya sa isang conference lang. Sumahin kaya ang achievements or titles won? SMB has the most in PBA including a grandslam, 3x back to back titles and 1 title bridging their grand slam season or 4 consecutive. So far, Crispa has the best title chain history and running 3rd is Alaska.
I cant ask for more from SMB. Ang Purefoods franchise nga ay hindi pa nanalo ng back to back titles ni minsan.. ARF,ARF
#9.1 saridandan on 2010-08-25 21:33 (Reply)
Eeekkk... UNLIKE! for me it's not about how many titles the team has since ngstart un team in PBA. They won championships but with different coaches...para saken, it's all about the present, not about the past! xe everything changes... ALASKA is the best, they're disciplined...and HUMBLE. :))
#9.2 no namer on 2010-08-26 08:57 (Reply)
pumalya sa isang conference? from what i can see they have been failing for two consecutive conferences already. don't forget the all-filipino cup, where they got their asses handed to them by pf, who wasn't even considered as a serious contender then.lol.

winning in the past doesn't mean a thing in the present. every team has a 0w-0L record once the season starts. so balewala na yung title from the previous season. di tulad sa sugal, where your previous winnings can help you in your next games.lol
#9.3 leo NAJ on 2010-08-26 09:54 (Reply)
that whats the author is saying..the yankee-type mentality of fans of smb the players also (like Alex Cabagnot)..dont brag about your team's winning tradition and dont even talk about purefoods' tradition..most ALL FILIPINO titles tied with crispa is not bad is it? LOL..most allfilipino finals appearance..how about smb, most of their championships came from import-laden conferences..is it okay to say smb just got lucky or just good in chosing their reinforcements but when it comes to allfilipino confernces just fumbles..
#10 rleuterio on 2010-08-25 10:28 (Reply)
You should be genuinely perplexed by this team. The pieces to create a "dynasty" seemed to have fallen in place. Yet , as individually talented as this team appeared to be, they had rarely shown the ability to "jell" as a cohesive unit.
This confirms some coaches belief that, seldom do the best players make the best team. It is the right combination of players - that mixture of individuals who worked best together and created the most productive team. Also missing is the togetherness on the court- that spirited cohesion which can be seen on how Alaska plays
#11 rleuterio on 2010-08-25 10:38 (Reply)
And it is also worth noting that SMB has some players do have in coaching parlance, "situational character". - their attitude are linked to results.Good results? Great attitude. Bad results? Bad attitude
#12 Tiger on 2010-08-25 13:43 (Reply)
Nice piece Jaemark. You already know how I feel about management and how they're basically running this team into the ground. Too many things being done haphazardly, too many iffy personnel and coaching decisions, too many instances of trading for the now instead of building for the future. I dont know who's calling the shots for the SMB team but they should get their collective heads out of their collective asses and shape the hell up! If they're in the dark as to what to do they should read your blog or listen to the fans at least. It's sad because SMB is supposed to be their flagship team yet it feels like it's the one in the most disarray.

One last thing I have to mention is your comment about their lineup is spot-on. This lineup is NOT superstar loaded, in fact it's chock-full of holes. NO go-to-guy ala James Yap. NO top-flight center. NO top-flight point guard. NO bruiser/rebounder. In fact if you go through the line-up top to bottom you can probably find one or two other players who are better than the SMB player. For instance.
PG - Tenorio, Alapag
SG - James Yap, WIllie Miller
SF - Ranidel DeOcampo, Cyrus Baguio
PF - Kelly Williams, Pingris
C - Reavis, Peek

So i dont think it's proper to refer to SMB's roster as loaded with stars, TNT's, yes. SMB, NO.

I don't know where the Beermen are headed, I dont know what trades or coaching shakeups are in their future, all I can do is hope that whoever's calling the shots suddenly gets an infusion of brain power and stops being so damned retarded!

"Superstar Team"? unless you win a championship you have no effing right to call it a Superstar team.

Cabagnot? what accomplishment does he have other than claiming he's got better records than MC47? Mic 'Penis'i, other that shooting 3 and fouling hard what can he possibly do? Arwind? 2x MVP runner-up, 2x championship runner-up, wannabe 3-point king, shooting bricks, what more can he give? Miranda?Yeo? one-time champions, now considered superstars? Kelly Williams, yes. Ryan Reyes, yes, but these two former SLR bozos are NOT. I can count the so-called superstars in this SMB team in one hand. Define the word before using it on this team.
