Bel13ve! Alaska, the thinking fan’s team, wins championship #13 with heart

Alaska Aces, 2010 Fiesta Conference champions

AFTER ITS semifinals series against Derby Ace, I thought San Miguel would have a very hard time in the finals going up against either Alaska or Talk N Text, who at the time were still to figure in a deciding seventh game in their own semifinals matchup. It had a lot to do with how San Miguel, the much fresher and deeper team, had so much trouble putting away a tired and overmatched Llamados squad whose import, Tony Washam, couldn’t even get a shot off Arwind Santos. That it took a superhuman effort for Gabe Freeman – who dominated Derby Ace’s injured big guys Rafi Reavis and Marc Pingris – for San Miguel to finally advance didn’t really inspire much confidence in me as a basketball observer.

In the middle of the series, I got a sense that this was how Alaska’s coach, Tim Cone, saw the matchup too. He’d deny it, but I think after winning game 1, he knew that the series was over. This is a veteran of countless basketball wars, who had come out on top 12 times before. He knew his way around these things.

Of course, I don’t have any inside information, but I got the sense that Coach Tim was confident that everything would go well when he started tweeting in the middle of the series – something he never did during the quarterfinals against Ginebra or the semifinals versus TNT. Then he became curiously active on Facebook, leaving comments around people’s status messages – he’d give updates on his conversations with Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and other stuff – and confirming friend requests, such as mine.

Then, to top everything off, he left a comment on this blog, in a post where I mulled over the future of my favorite team, after it was reported that Purefoods was going to be sold by San Miguel Corporation. I said that if the team’s stars such as James Yap found themselves on other teams, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. “I got an idea,” Coach Tim wrote. “Become an Alaska fan!”

He would never admit it, but Earl Timothy Cone knew pretty early on that he had this series in the bag.

PEOPLE ALWAYS say that Alaska is the thinking fan’s team. Their reputation was cemented in the mid-‘90s, during their multiple-championship run. The passing and discipline that the ‘90s Milkmen displayed on both ends of the floor* was in stark contrast to the run-and-gun, smash-mouth, macho brand of basketball that was the only thing Pinoys were familiar with at the time.

* – Perhaps no one typified the cold, clinical efficiency of the Alaska machine more than Jojo Lastimosa, who remains, to this day, the quintessential Alaska player. While Johnny Abarrientos belonged to all PBA fans, Jolas was Alaska’s, and Alaska’s alone. Originally nicknamed The Helicopter for his high-flying, slam dunking ways, Lastimosa transformed his game into a ground-based attack, relying less on athleticism and more on smarts, footwork, and angles, while developing the best medium-range perimeter game since Bogs Adornado. Lastimosa’s transformation mirrored Alaska’s evolution in the ‘90s from the Alaska Air Force into Tex Winter’s Southeast Asian wet dream.

Also, Jolas was a pretty huge dick on the court, so everyone projected their hate of Alaska toward him (again, since Johnny A. belonged to everyone, we couldn’t hate him). There’s a reason that the best line in all of Gary Granada’s Ginebra songs remains
, “At ang inuman ay hanggang umaga, at ang pulutan ay si Lastimosa!”

So while it wasn’t much of a surprise that Alaska won, it was kind of surprising how Alaska won this championship: with a particularly macho brand of basketball. For much of the series, Alaska eschewed its vaunted triangle offense to dump the ball down low into Diamon Simpson, and dared San Miguel to just fucking try to stop him. When Simpson was out, Cone would call for a top-of-the-key isolation for Cyrus Baguio,** who would try to go one-on-one and embarrass Dondon Hontiveros – and he usually did.

** – I wonder if Coach Tim was aware that Baguio also went out with Valerie Concepcion before she became Hontiveros’ girlfriend. Think that motivated Skyrus? That’s why Tim Cone has 13 PBA championships, and you don’t.

And it bled onto the other players: Reynel Hugnatan would call for the ball in the block and score, like he was still playing for the Negros Slashers. Larry Fonacier and Mark Borboran kept taking – and making! – ballsy shots. Joe Devance, of all people, kept taking Jay Washington in the low block, like he read my post about JWash being a pussy and wanted to challenge the latter’s manhood himself.

Unlike Alaska’s mid-‘90s teams, the thinking fan’s team which won championships because they had a better blend of talent, they had better chemistry, and they were better-prepared, this particular team won because they were more aggressive, and they wanted it more.

And, as cliché as this sounds, they played with more heart.

ALASKA CERTAINLY wasn’t lacking for inspiration this conference. Last April, Alaska’s big boss, Wilfred Uytengsu Sr. passed away, and his son Fred and the whole Alaska organization decided to dedicate this tournament to him (the players wore WU patches on their uniforms during the conference).

It was also the farewell conference for veteran guard Jeffrey Cariaso. People bandy the term “heart and soul” around a lot, but Cariaso was the glue for this Alaska team. He was the players’ connection to the past, a member of the 1996 Grand Slam team as the squad’s young bottle rocket, a constant reminder of the team’s glory years. He also serves as a bridge between the team’s homegrown group of stars, and its caucus of Fil-Ams (and its import). In Pacific Rims, Rafe Bartholomew describes Alaska as being a true family, and that comes in no small part because of the presence of The Jet.

Of course, the other players had their reasons too. For LA Tenorio, this was a stab at basketball glory, a first championship at the only level of basketball where he had not yet won a championship. For Cyrus Baguio and Larry Fonacier, this was for basketball redemption, a chance to be back on the big stage after some people had written them off. For talented young guys like Joe Devance and Mark Borboran, it was an opportunity to get the monkey off their backs. Etcetera, etcetera.

You could imagine, then, how playing with heart would come so easy for this crew.

WHAT’S HARDER TO imagine is Tim Cone actually sitting back and letting his players play. You have this basketball genius – seriously, is it still a stretch to call him the best PBA coach of all time? – and you just know it drives him crazy to sit down and let LA Tenorio decide what to do with the ball. To let Diamon Simpson get the rock in the low post, hoping that he makes the right decision, and that Reynel Hugnatan makes the right dive cut at the right moment for that easy layup. To let Cyrus Baguio figure out what to do on his own – and if you’ve seen Baguio play, you know he never figures out exactly what to do up until the very last moment. To let Larry Fonacier and Mark Borboran pull shots out of their asses.

It couldn’t be easy for Coach Tim to relax, especially not in the finals, not against San Miguel. But that’s exactly what he needed to do – relax, hold back, and trust his players to play with heart and passion.

Maybe that’s why he was on Twitter and Facebook so damn much.

(Tomorrow, hopefully: Quo vadis, San Miguel?)

sana BMEG at AA next conference finals. lol

as a die hard BMEG fan, baka mas maganda pa kung BMEG ang nakalaban ng Aces. ito kasing mga SMC big bosses eh. lol

At least the Alaska management won't replace Tim Cone with, say Lastimosa, in the middle of a championship round. Yan ang may tunay na pinag-samahan, hindi tulad ng SMC. :P

Awesome article FQ. You and Rafe make me want to switch my allegiance to Alaska, haha, but I'm still with Ginebra. There's no denying though that seeing Alaska play and move the ball around is a joy to watch.

Love this post. :) Though I don't follow PBA now the way I did back in high school, I'm forever an Alaska fan. Wala pa ring tatalo!

Wow Lara, i didn't peg you as a PBA fan. More than your brother pala, hehe.

Haha! I was more of the screaming, shirt-clutching, hand-wringing fan than the play-by-play analyst type. Was, because I rarely tune in to basketball nowadays except to watch UP lose.

Great post! I've been an Alaska fan since 1989, from the days of Marte Saldana, Pongky Alolor -- remember him? -- and the Bruise Brothers (who were whipped by Abe King and Philip Cezar in one Finals), the Grand Slam-winning "Big Three" (plus Cariaso) and the past couple of dry years with their misplaced emphasis on Fil-Ams (Wallkvist, Arigo and, as good a guy as I think he is, Peek). It was such a relief to see Miller go. For next year's all-Pinoy, a first five of LA-Baguio-Thoss-DeVance-dela Cruz, backstopped by Topex-Fonacier-Eman-Hugnatan-Borboran seems pretty solid.

Although the other teams in the Ramon Ang vs. Manny Pangilinan league will probably have something to say about that. =)

I'm down with any comment that namedrops Mighty Mite Saldana and Pongky Alolor, man.

Compared to series against brgy n tnt, i was more confident that the aces will win against the so-called all star team(smb). After miller left the aces, they became stronger as a team!!! All the players played with their hearts & i salute them for that!!! The new breed of Alaska Aces has finally come..."Wala pa ring tatalo sa ALASKA"

Who wouldn't be motivated if your big boss, the Aces' team owner, was there present in your every game to cheer for you? Am sure he is as busy as any team owner is. It's really a great feeling to be supported all the way by the management. Also, the fans who dominated the Big Dome in red.
#6.1 Matthew on 2010-08-20 16:44 (Reply)
Indeed it must have been a great feeling seeing Mr. Uytengsu in the crowd every game. I remember the effect Don Jaime Zobel de Ayala had when he used to watch his Purefoods team play. I think it was the 1997 All-Filipino Cup Finals where nobody among the Gordon's Gin fans could match his intensity cheering and Purefoods won the series. It definitely made a difference then and it also did for Alaska. It also seemed that the Alaska crowd who turned out to watch was more than the Beermen supporters - that disappointed me as an SMB fan. And I don't recall Ambassador Cojuangco being at any of the 6 Finals games either. I could only hope our UP Maroons can also convert the crowd support into wins... what do you think Jaemark?

There were more Alaska fans than SMB fans that night? I'm VERY surprised. Good job, Red Army.

As much as I love SMB I have a feeling that they'll never win another championship unless management shapes up and starts emulating more the Alaska franchise's way of doing things. I mean enough of this willy-nilly, helter skelter way of running a team. The non-stop merry go-round of coaches (mid-conference coaching changes are bad enough, mid-series pa kaya!) , the stockpiling of supposed talent who dont really fit in (hello Denok Miranda), and the faulty personnel decisions (Jonas Villanueva over Tenorio? Pennisi over Espinas? Getting rid of Marc Pingris when he was undoubtedly the x-factor who won them the Fiesta Cup last year.) are definitely not the way to build a dynasty.

The last time SMB had a truly dominant team was back when Jong Uichico was still coach, and they were dominant because they had a system and they had continuity. Jong was only continuing the system laid down by Ron Jacobs wherein all the players knew what the system was and what their roles were. The two Dannys knew they were the scorers, Racela knew he was the maestro, Abuda knew he had to defend and get rebounds. That's why they won, not because they had the most superstars on their team. Defense not superstars wins championships, and defense is more often than not played better by role players than by superstars. In my point of view SMB only lucked out on last year's Fiesta crown because of Gabe Freeman and Marc Pingris, two hustle players who could make up for the defensive liabilities of their teammates.

So unless management shapes up and sees the error of their ways I doubt if SMB will be raising a trophy anytime soon.

Agree! iba talaga pag si Coach Tim mismo ang confident, I remember during their 1996 Comm. Cup series against Shell (Game 5), after Shell beat Alaska Coach Tim was interviewed and said that "Shell won there last game". D nya nga yan sinabi ngayon pero yun confidence level nya sa mga interview na tatapusin na nila ng Game 6 was a good move. Dapat talaga my swagger sya saka dapat sknya mag simula un killer instinct. Anyway, sana un attitude nila ganyan dn kahit wala na ang Ace of Diamon

Now I can say, that he Bmeg/PF team is the much balanced team among the SMC teams, that the Aces really have a hard time beating this season...

But still hats-off to Alaska, congrats!!!

i knew it, from the start of the quarterfinals..since then, i knew that alaska will won the championship..i got a strong feeling that this conference is for them.and now, they all got the price of all the hardworks they've done.i also witnessed them won the grand slam last 1996.i think those times will also be repeated sooner. To all alaska players, from the bottom of my heart, congratulations!Manalo, matalo, solid alaska pa rin ako forever..If ever given the chance, sana makita ko uli lahat ng video ng games nila.sarap kasi ulit-ulitin. wish magkaroon ako ng copy.thanks and more power.

Let me start off by saying how happy I am that my beloved Aces are back on top where they belong. Well, they have always been. I was overjoyed to watch the Alaska Aces spanking SMB's big fat ass. Such a beautiful sight to see seeing those aweful beermen eat some humble pie and go down on their knees. San Miguel deserved that whipping. On the other hand, I am happy for the Alaska players. Not only did they achieved, but they also proved to be good examples for our Filipino youth that hardwork, humility, and patience will always win against cockiness, intimidation, ignorance, and corruption. I am happy for Coach Tim Cone for having proved that having the values of loyalty, hardword, intelligence really pays off. I'm happy for Diamon Simpson, that althought he hasn't yet achieved the ultimate goal of playin in the NBA, he had found a more noble calling here. I'm happy for Skyrus Baguio for having proved that folks from Mindanao are equally as good or even greater as anybody from the rest of the world.Im happy for L.a. Im happy for Jolas. Im happy for Sonny Thoss. Im happy for sam eman, for larry, for mark borboran, and the entire alaska crew. Heck, im even happy for Quinito Henson for this article. i am very happy for the entire Alaska family. Alaska is the best team in the land period.

This will be the start of another string of Championships. The players are still young. The system is in place and nothing beats success!

did you notice how SMB players played with a lack of intensity in the final game?
#15 SYD on 2010-08-21 01:38 (Reply)
i loved alaska when the quintet of juinio, hawkins, cariaso/duremdes, lastimosa, and abarrientos were around.

i hated them when only camaso and stephen padilla were the only "100% locals" in the squad.

i liked miller but baguio made his other teammates shine.

you have to love this alaska team.

the fire in coach tim cone is back, no doubt. during the post game interview, he did mention 'looking forward to the all-filipino'. i agree that his statement of finishing the series is like recalling his statement back in the 96 commissioner's cup vs shell. unlike last conference what i recall him say is 'purefoods is a hard team to beat' this time is different, i'm almost surprised about his confidence in finishing the series.

yes they won fiesta, but i think the past 2 phil cup still lingers deep inside these aces players. and i also believe alaska thirst for the all-pinoy cup, which they last won 10 years ago. alaska have all the pieces to make another run at the phil cup, just a matter of putting it all together.
#20 Jersey#33 on 2010-08-23 11:23 (Reply)
Alaska's success formula is simple. Firstly, Tim Cone continue confessing he idolizes The maestro Baby Dalupan as coach. Next its no secret Cone patterns proven plays orignated by Phil J. and Tex W. in the NBA. Owner Wilfred Uytengsu is as amiable and supportive as late Danny Floro of legendary Crispa team. Importantly, Cone gives much trust & confidence both to his players and coaching assistants. Lastly, he always downplays his chances and hides his full resolve during interviews, a Pacman trait. It pays following the winners ways.

I like this blog of Mr. Jaemark on how he put emphasis on the Alaska Aces character of a champion.

I agree to most of you guys, Coach Tim Cone and his system are the basic ingredient of their championship. I'm glad that Coach Tim had re-established his confidence (like the way he was 15yrs ago). As an Alaska loyalist I think coach Tim lose his swagger when his mom past away (long time ago) ironically the loss of a great boss to him Mr. WU Sr. had been a key to make him feel the urge of fighting and WINNING again.

This had been a very inspirational season for Alaska, it feels like the same with 1995 Gov's Cup Championship the maiden voyage to '96 Grandslam and almost '98 Grandslam (era).

Ang sarap it really feels so good, every game in the playoffs (from BGK, TNT and SMB series) feels like it is a basketball-eternity.

They are so destined to win it, from the acquisitions/trading of locals and a SUPERIMPORT, great battles up to the showering of Stars (of the showbiz world) to a great display of TEAMWORK, CHEMISTRY, PASSION and PERSEVERANCE in Game 6, everything just fall into right place.... and it is so wonderful!!!!

We thank God for all the blessings He had given to our team. I really love this team in a major major way (",) Goforthe14th!

Is it just me, or does the Fonacier for Espiritu trade (effectively) and the enlistment of Bon2 Custodio seem just as ominous as the Abarrientos-Juinio for Ordonio-Peek swap?
