In defense of Coke’s Asi Taulava decision

UPDATE: Charles Tiu reports via Twitter that Coke has granted permission for Taulava to play in the Fiba-Asia Stankovic Cup. Next up: permission from the PBA.

Coca-Cola executive JB Baylon is taking it from all angles today after team management decided not to allow its center, Asi Taulava, to play for Smart Gilas in the Fiba-Asia Stankovic Cup. Taulava had begun to practice with the team recently to stay in shape, and volunteered his services for the Stankovic tourney after reports that several members of the team, including big men Marcus Douthit (passport issues), Greg Slaughter (studies), and Rabeh Al-Hussaini (leaving the team for the PBA draft), would not be able to participate in the tournament.

Early yesterday, Gilas team manager Frankie Lim told the Philippine Star’s Joey Villar that they had made a request to Coke for Taulava’s participation. “We have asked permission from Coke and the PBA, we hope they’ll allow us to get Asi,” he said.

But this GMANews.TV story by Rey Joble paints quite a different picture. Baylon explained how the process of asking permission went down: “Frankie (Lim), team manager of Smart-Gilas, texted Gerard (Francisco), our assistant team manager, and asked if we can allow Asi to play for Smart-Gilas in the Stankovic Cup. My worry is what if Asi gets injured? He might also get burned out once he returns here and prepare in the coming All-Filipino.”

Isn’t there something off with this picture? Coke is paying Taulava millions of pesos in salaries and bonuses, and Baylon’s concerns are valid. Now, I know the request is for a national cause etc., but shouldn’t there have been more formal communication between officials of Smart Gilas and Coca-Cola? I mean, beyond a text message to an assistant team manager who doesn’t have any decision-making powers? Why not set up a meeting, and have discussions, as well as a proposal in black-and-white? What is Gilas going to do the next time it needs players for another tournament, tweet about it?

A scribe I spoke to told me that in the PBA board, Baylon usually responds well to overtures when they come from Talk N Text governor Ricky Vargas. It actually makes sense, considering both aren’t mere basketball officials, but are actually senior corporate bigwigs (Baylon is a director for Coca-Cola in the Philippines). Perhaps discussions should have been conducted at that level, considering that Vargas himself is Vice-Chairman of the SBP. That way, Gilas could have addressed Coke’s concerns about Asi’s participation, such as insurance and burnout issues. If they set something up face to face, then they could even discuss ways they could work together. For example, Coke could lend Asi to Gilas, and the players could make a short appearance in one of the Coca-Cola Foundation’s corporate social responsibility efforts, like their Little Red Schoolhouse projects.

I’d written about the factionalism and turmoil inside the SBP and Gilas camps, and I can’t help but think that this is yet another example of it. Taulava has been practicing with the national team since last week, and Toroman has already sounded off about the need for reinforcements for the squad. And yet all that Gilas could muster is a text message? What are Noli Eala and co. doing? Oh wait, don’t answer that.

Even more worrisome is how there’s been no official communication between the SBP and the PBA – which, by the way, is one of the national basketball federation’s stakeholders – about how they could work together in the future, especially since even Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman admits the team needs help. We could all speculate about possible reinforcements for Gilas from the PBA until we’re blue in the face, but unless they sit down like adults, instead of texting back channels, we won’t get anywhere with this.

hello sir jaemark.

wow is that true? they communicated through a text message?thats unprofessional.

Were you able to confirm this with Frankie Lim that he only sent a text message for the request?

That's what GMANews.TV reported, quoting Baylon.

Sir Jaemark, does this mean that if Gilas will meet with Coke officials submit an official letter of request and discuss the benefits etc today, then there's a small possibility that they will allow ASI to play? WTF is SBP doing? I bet namamangha will post sweet words in IBN again :P
#1.1.1.1 jaemark on 2010-08-04 16:55 (Reply)
i honestly don't know. it might be too late, but hopefully it isn't.
#1.2 bonoy on 2010-08-04 22:59 (Reply)
When asi was still a rookie he was asked "what's the difference between international and philippine's basketball?" asi answered " there's so much politics going on here." and that i believe summarizes everything. So much ego, so much posturing, control. What happened to "for the country"? Does it all have to make business sense? yeah let's figure that one out.
#2 september on 2010-08-04 16:56 (Reply)
ano ba yan! simple things.!
#3 Mark on 2010-08-04 17:11 (Reply)
To be honest, kahit naman po yata may official request etc di naman sila papayag na i loan si ASI for this tournament. Kasi kung talagang gusto nila, they could have told SBP na can they formally request asi so that we can loan him legally? Binigay agad nila yung verdict nila about it then they release this news very late kasi alam nila na late na for all of those things to materialize. Kumbaga to summarize, wala silang planong ipahiram si ASI, they are just using this situation para bumango ng konti ang pangalan nila dahil obviously, madami ang nadisappoint sa kanila. On SBP's part naman mali talaga na txt message lang. ano tayo highschool? SUS Ginoo!!! WTF is happening to Philippine Basketball?
#3.1 jaemark on 2010-08-04 17:18 (Reply)
i don't think it's fair to jump to that conclusion. bakit nasa Coke yung burden na magpahiram? eh all this time, the SBP has been insisting that it doesn't need the PBA. they're being made na parang kontrabida na agad... eh wala naman formal na terms na hinarap sa kanila.
#3.1.1 Mark on 2010-08-04 17:29 (Reply)
Sorry sir for my unfair conclusion. Di ko po pinapanigan sinuman sa kanila. Pareho silang may sala. SBP was very unprofessional dito sa ginawa nila. Sino po ba naman kasi ang matalinong nakaisip na txt msg will do? and besides, tama po kayo sa point na bakit kasi nag insist dati ang SBP na di nila need PBA? Just plain ego? on Coke's part naman, why shut the door? Can't they set aside their differences muna and unite for a while (better kung for good)? It's for the Flag and country. Dapat Bayan muna bago sarili. again sir, sorry for my unfair conclusion
#3.1.1.1 jaemark on 2010-08-04 17:33 (Reply)
If you look at the statement carefully, Baylon just expressed his concern. He didn't say that there's no way Asi would be allowed to play because there was no formal request.
#3.1.1.1.1 digitalsuperman on 2010-08-04 17:41 (Reply)
im not quite sure or maybe i just missed an article that wrote on how SBP insisted they don't need PBA.

as far as i know, toroman mentioned before that he's got a wishlist for players in the pba.

i think if that statement come from one man from SBP doesn't really speak for the SBP as the organization. unless siguro if SBP officially made a written statement or maybe the SBP man himself mr. mvp made the statement that they don't need the pba then maybe i guess that statement is firing back at them.

but come to think of it i don't think mr. mvp would release that statement.

noli eala's bravado and posturing aside, he did say that "they will welcome any help from the PBA, especially if and when the time comes they might need the services of a couple of players, three at the maximum, to beef up the Smart Gilas team..."

Honestly, I think it would be unfair to judge both sides when we really dont know the whole story. there is just too much conflicting rumors, blogs, tweets and news around its almost hard to find which one is real. In my case, i just ignore all these stuff and then go watch Gilas games on TV or on streaming regardless of who is in the lineup and cheer for them like hell. makes my life easier than worrying and being "fan-stressed" by all these problems and controversies. but then again, this shows how passionate we are into basketball. if this was football and we are brazilians, the fandom would even be worse.

The Smart Gilas Team no matter what they will do will be an embarrassment to the country. Adding Asi Taulava to the team is a joke. He is old, slow and couldn't care less whether he can contribute or not. And adding an old bloke to a young team will cause demoralization to the team. But it is not Asi's fault though because surely the money is good that is why he volunteered to join the team. The team is desperate to cover up for past embarrassments and Asi knows it. It just shows that the handlers of the Smart Gilas team who is unfortunately our national team are confused and assuming experts who do not have a concrete program to bring us back to our past glories. It is character not money that will win it for us. What is wrong from the beginning will not make it correct in the end.

Winning a game in the Stankovic Cup does not and will never make the Gilas Team a team we could be proud of unless they win the big one, Asian Games gold medal, Olympic qualifying, even the ABC or much less the Jones Cup. They could not even win this one (Stankovic Cup). And we even use imports. I will shut up if they come out champions of the Stankovic Cup, but sorry, that won't probably happen.

I agree with you Bebot Medina, 1000%, nuon ko pa sinasabi dito na yang National Team na yan, waste of time, waste of money, pure B.S.

This National team is a national disgrace.

Hoy Mr. derby ace fan.
