Purefoods / Derby Ace season postmortem by Coach Ryan Gregorio

Coach Ryan Gregorio sent his thoughts on the past Purefoods/Derby Ace season a few minutes ago. This was the same message he sent to his family, and he wanted to share it with fans of the team:

  1. Despite coming up short in our desire to win another title, I believe that we truly had a memorable and magical season. The 41 wins that we have so far broke the all-time franchise record for most number of wins in a season, which was 39, established in 1993.

This current Purefoods/ B-Meg roster has distinguished itself as 1 of the best teams ever assembled by the organization and I am so proud to be a part of it.

  2. Winning the All-Filipino conference, and the manner we won it, would forever stay in the minds of many basketball enthusiasts. We were not seeded highly, and we struggled in the early part of the elimination round but we hung in there. We survived a tough series against Rain or Shine, winning it in 5 games, then upset the awesome Beermen in 6 games by winning 3 straight after being down 1 – 2, then an incredible 4-0 sweep of the mighty Aces, which surprised a lot of experts. And the victory pushed our team to a tie with the legendary Crispa Redmanizers for most All-Filipino championships with 5.

  3. The Fiesta Conference started [with us] on the wrong foot. We missed the services of Kerby due to an injury which turned out to be a season-ending ailment. But with sheer determination and willpower, we were able to beat the odds and end the elims with 13 wins and 5 losses, tied with SMB at number 2. As the season developed, we experienced all sorts of problems ranging from physical, mental and emotional stresses that would make an ordinary person/team give-up and fall apart, but not the B-Meg players, not the B-Meg team. We continued to compete and vowed that “the basketball court is our sanctuary; the moment we step inside we will just focus on the task at hand and shut off our minds from all the distractions.” Down 1-2 against an athletic RoS team and facing outright elimination, we rolled the dice on Tony Washam and won 2 straight. Our gamble paid huge dividends, an entry to the Final 4.

  4. At that point however, I felt that we were really running on near empty gas tank. Puso na lang ang lumalaban. Mental fatigue, off-court distractions and playing so many back to back games took a toll on us. Kerby, still out; Ping, injected with a gel on his thigh just to play; Roger, groin; Rafi, foot ; and James, black eye, swollen knee, stiff back, ankle sprain, and a lot more… Still, we kept on fighting until the fight was over.

  5. In the end, we just couldn't keep in step with the Beermen particularly Freeman. He was the difference-maker in the series. We kept on pushing ourselves until the end but, it just wasn't enough. The stronger, fresher and the better team won against us but not without a fight.

We may have lost the series 2 - 4, but deep inside us , we feel like winners simply because we know that we all did our BEST. Truly a remarkable journey for all of us, a journey that I would remember for many many years.

ayos yan pinagsasabi mo coach RG... parang yung ibang failing teams wala ng excuse kasi kinuha mo lahat.... good enough though, it may save your neck or at least give you a fat farewell bonus. lol
#3.1 jaemark on 2010-08-02 16:58 (Reply)
dude, save his neck? he coached the all-filipino champions.
#3.2 JP on 2010-08-03 00:49 (Reply)
I don't agree with item 1, they got 41 wins because there are a lot of games played today than in 2003. Nobody can duplicate that record by Alvin Patrimonio, Jerry Codinera, Dindo Pumaren. Elmer Cabahug and Gleen Capacio.
#3.2.1 canderson on 2010-08-05 02:26 (Reply)
Yep, since those days, they've added expansion teams, double-round eliminations and longer playoff series. Games won is only a meaningful statistic when measured against games lost (in other words, win percentage).

RG would make a good politician, he's always armed with excuses for when he loses and never gives his opponents any credit. He'd also make a good septic tank, being that he's full of crap.
#4 KG21 on 2010-08-02 17:03 (Reply)
Bakit parang parting shots na niya yan, tuloy na ba ang paglipat ng bakuran ni RG!!!
#5 Jayr on 2010-08-02 19:49 (Reply)
I think coach RG delivered a great job this season. Parting words? What is he and Gov. Pardo's friendship for if he will go? :D
#6 Jimbo on 2010-08-02 20:11 (Reply)
Great job ? ....... you've got to be kidding ...... should be okay, but not great.

Look at what Tim Cone has done with a so-so ALA line-up the whole year. Right now, ALA has taken the powerhouse TnT to the limit with a very short rotation.

Like I said before, DAL performed well mainly because of Pingris, Reavis and Maierhofer .... you dont teach these guys how to go after rebounds furiosly and defend the lane.

This is the reason why Pingris was sent back by SMC Bosses to DAL via everyone's friend AIR21.

I dont think anyone can forget Gregorio's old playbook - consisiting mainly of isolation plays for Kerby and the occasional screens for Yap.
#6.1 jaemark on 2010-08-02 20:32 (Reply)
Oh you mean the same Alaska team that has enough talent to make two straight all filipino championships? The one with the best scoring centet in the league, and probably the best young point guard in the land? The one that was talented enough to finish first in the Philippine Cup and sweep Ginebra in the semis?

Yeah, Purefoods swept them. But apparently, by your logic, their coach is still a chump. Whatever.
#6.1.1 Jimbo on 2010-08-02 20:49 (Reply)
Yup that ALA .......

They traded their 2x MVP this conference .... their supposed best scoring center and back-up shooting guard played absolutely shitty this entire conference .... their lone back-up point guard was gimpy all season long ..... yet ALA maintained performance.

I dont recall using the word chump .... like I said, an okay job for Gregorio, but not great .... Pingris' re-arrival and the other new bigs are the main reason why DAL played great this year.
#6.1.1.1 jaemark on 2010-08-02 21:05 (Reply)
hehe fair enough. the reason i was so bold about making that bet with ryan gregorio, for a moratorium, is that whatever i thought of his coaching style, i couldn't argue with his results. we've gotten to a point in the PBA where it's very, very, very hard to win, so when a coach wins, you have to give him the benefit of the doubt. it's something that's not done enough. then again, players win games, coaches lose them.

dami nga excuses...Look at smb bfeore when they failed to enter all filipino cup against talkntext, did coach siot makes some exuses that they lost to talkntext becausse they dont have dorian, danny I, and Lordy in that battle.? nope he just mention that they lost to a much better team.that's it..In fact they came from the wildcard and beat ginebra to quarters. They played many games than dal..but coach siot didn't even mention that they are tired came from these and that...it is in your hands why you came up to automatic slots, quarte or wildcard..that's why we have elimination round and do your best in order you will be in the top 2 automatic slots so that you can rest for a while...
#13.1 xox on 2010-08-10 07:48 (Reply)
Siot can't make excuses because he's got the best lineup in the league.

#15 jaemark on 2010-08-05 11:01 (Reply)
I think everyone's missing the point of RG's comments. he's not making excuses for the loss to San Miguel, but he is reviewing what has been, honestly, a GREAT season for his team. of course, he adds his usual dramatic flair, but i agree with his main points.
#16 Eyemesem on 2010-08-05 13:55 (Reply)
He's simply a drama queen. Sure they had a good season especially last AFC.

But there's no need to make it sound like their team's been trashed and raped by a gang of thugs coming into the game or that James Yap was playing with a spinal injury lol. BMEG/Purefoods has this notoriety of never failing to tell us about all sorts of injury woes especially from their star player lol.

A simple "We just got beaten by the better team but we still had a good year" would have sufficed.
#16.1 jaemark on 2010-08-05 13:58 (Reply)

Where's the fun in that? ;)

Excuse man o hindi... katotohanan lang naman ang sinabi e coach RG.
