Smart Gilas Insider thoughts: Marcus Douthit, Brian Goorjian, and the Jordan zone

Editor’s note: One of the most valued commenters on this blog is a man who identifies himself only as GilasInsider. After communicating with him privately, I was able to verify his identity as someone close to the team, and he has since been sharing his insights on this blog for the benefit of the fans of the developmental team.

Late last night, he sent in this email, ahead of tonight's game between Gilas and the Jordan national team.

I spent a lot of time with Coach Rajko Toroman today. He had a long conversation with Brian Goorjian, coach of the Dongguan Leopards, who led the Australian national team to 2 Olympic berths, and 2 World Cup appearances. Coach was pleased to find out how highly Goorjian thought of our team. Goorjian said that no one can play man-to-man with us, which is why Dongguan kept playing zone defense against us, and why Jordan practically played zone for 30 minutes in its victory against Gilas.

Goorjian has only been with this Chinese team for 6 weeks, and he said he will replace both of his team’s imports. He claimed he could have beaten Talk N Text, but one of his imports, point guard Kevin Kruger, didn’t play because he was too tired from the Gilas game, wherein he also suffered a major cramp.

Also, one of their players, #7, a Chinese national team mainstay, said he was too tired that he didn’t want to play anymore. (Ed: Dongguan lists #7 as Zhang Kai, a 6’11” center who made it to the 2008 Sacramento Kings training camp as a free agent.) But during halftime of their game versus TNT, he asked Goorjian to let him play, but the coach simply ignored him and kept him on the bench.

All of these, of course, were related by Coach Rajko, who seems to think very highly of Goorjian, and of Mario Palma, who is coaching Jordan.

Coach really likes Marcus Douthit, who will most likely be signed. He loves Marcus’ shooting and his basketball IQ. His only problem with Marcus is that he doesn’t show enough energy; he needs Douthit to be an energy player for Gilas so the other players can feed off it. So far, it’s been lacking.

Douthit is also being offered contracts by a Spanish team and a Russian team. Let’s hope he chooses us. We should know by early next week whether he will sign with us or not.

Gilas players seem confident they can beat this Jordan team tonight. They will have some adjustments for the zone defense of Jordan, although without practice it may be hard to execute.

One reason their zone offense versus Jordan was ineffective was because Douthit only knows one of their zone plays, so that was the only play they kept calling. When the Jordanians adjusted their defense to counter that play, we had a hard time beating it. But our rally in the last 5 minutes of the game was a good sign for us.

Let's hope for the best tomorrow.

hello jaemark it's me again!
i'm sorry about criticizing Coach Rajko Toroman the last time, seems like a lot of people reacted to my opinion.

but I was only saying what I feel and see.

Smart Gilas had lots of ups and downs in the past few years, Inconsistency of the players and the team is one of the major factors of their rise and fall.

For example, Japeth Aguilar shines in one game, and then back to depression mode the other game, again and again. Yes, all of the players became better than ever before, but still a player's improvement doesn't spell a W in a game. Hence, a player's improvement is a "recipe" for a championship or a win.

But then again, Rajko Toroman's style of "iron-fist" coaching prevents the whole team to improve. Shouting and scolding at players doesn't solve the game problem, it doesn't give the team 25 points, and most importantly, it doesn't give you confidence.

As we all know "confidence" is a very big factor in basketball and as time passes by without confidence in hand, you will surely lose to yourself and kill your basketball career.

Bottomline is, "too much of everything is bad". And that "too much" is Coach Rajko's very tight grip on his players.. Suffocating them like trying to pick-up an ant with your big fingers, killing them accidentally and unintentionally.

Hey deerman,

Thats a great and very valid point there. and i was thinking he also is way too tough but seeing those 2 other coaches in this MVP cup, and i tell you, they are probably even worse than him. But the Chinese players nor the Jordan players dont ever seem to answer back or anything.

Those 2 coaches led 2 teams to the olympics already. And coach Raijko led iran to the olympics. Just looking at them i can see how strict they are and how they shout at their players. But these 3 guys are olympians so im guessing their style works. If they are like that in the game, what more when they are in practice.
Coach says that Palma coach has squeezed everything out of the Jordan team cause talentwise they are no match for us. He says some of their bench players could never even play in the leagues here! but that's just a testament to how god their coach is.

yes i see those 3 coaches are very strict and are very prudent people too.

I hope that Japeth picks up his game and they'll have a solid run until the Olympic qualifiers.

all of us has high hopes for the team and I really wish for the best for Philippine Basketball.

well, let's just hope that the team will continue their Jordan beating performance and no injuries from this moment on.

Hi Sir Gilasinsider,

Thanks for your comments and inputs. Is it true that Coach Toroman will try out Stanley Pringle (PG) for Gilas?
#2.1 gilasinsider on 2010-06-28 23:51 (Reply)
yes it is. He is a starter in the belgian league which coach thinks is very competitive and coach thinks that none of our players could be starters there. so that means he is really good. they will try to talk to his agent and see if he can come over.
#2.1.1 deerman on 2010-06-29 06:34 (Reply)
who's this Stanley Pringle? is he a Filipino too?

isn't Casio and Barroca good enough?
adding PG as another import is not a good idea, because we Filipinos have lots of talents in the SG and PG spots..

this is certainly bad. the chemistry that they should've built a long time ago will slowly shatter if this continues.

Pringle is Fil-Am.

i asked coach raijko and he relly wants a third point guard. if he cannot get pringle then maybe ryan reyes will be his option.

People keep wanting the team to drop chris tiu and the other shorter guards but coach raijko keeps emphasizing that he is very happy with them and size doesnt matter to him for the guards but for the big men it does. He was asked point blank if he wants James yap or other guys like that in his team and he said No he doesn't want them.

He only wants kelly williams from the PBA.
#2.1.1.2.1 deerman on 2010-06-30 08:00 (Reply)
yep Chris Tiu and Barroca are very hard workers and them being dropped off the team really just sucks.

These guys give them intensity in defense in the backcourt and they really deserve to be in the team.

Tiu is very important as a leader on and off the court.
and
Barroca is the epitome of a Pinoy Basketball Player, seeing him in the court gives us hope for pinoy street players who can rise-up to the occasion just like him. His style is the perfect style of a true-blue Pinoy Player.
