Smart Gilas struggles against Jordan

I rushed to the Ninoy Aquino Stadium tonight after a long day of work in the field just in time for the tipoff of Smart Gilas versus the Jordan national team. Gilas actually played well in the first half, taking a first quarter lead and keeping in step with the taller Jordanians at halftime.

But Jordan, the bronze medal winner at last year’s Fiba-Asia championship, stepped up its attack in the third quarter, taking a 58-50 lead at the end of the period. They turned the game into a laugher in the fourth quarter, using a 15-4 run to take a 19-point lead before Gilas rallied to make the score respectable, 83-75.

Like most of the other fans in the stadium, I ended up drenched after the game, adding insult to injury. It always sucks to watch a team with the words “Pilipinas” across the chest losing.

Some thoughts on the game:
  • Marcus Douthit twisted his ankle in the second quarter, which could have affected his performance, even after he returned later. But my first impression is that he’s solid, but not as talented or explosive as CJ Giles.

  • Gilas’ best five was its small-ball lineup with Jayvee Casio, Chris Tiu, Marcio Lassiter, Mac Baracael, and Greg Slaughter after Douthit went down. Lassiter, Baracael, and Casio hit several three-pointers to keep Gilas in the game.

  • Slaughter was especially impressive. He wasn’t exactly smooth, but he played solid man-to-man and help defense, and ran the floor well. He even had a two-handed follow-up dunk on the break.

  • On the flip side, I’m worried about the rest of the guys in the rotation. Chris Lutz looks like he hasn’t adjusted to the system yet, while Mark Barroca, Dylan Ababou, and Japeth Aguilar looked very tentative, like they were worried about being yanked from the game by Coach Rajko Toroman if they missed a shot or were late on a defensive rotation. It’s like they’re constantly looking over their shoulder to see if someone’s going to the scorer’s table to check in for them.

  • Actually, Aguilar deserves his own bullet point. His confidence is just completely shattered, and Toroman looks like he’s much, much, much more comfortable having the 6’3” Baracael out there at power forward instead of the 6’10” Aguilar. With seconds to go before the end of the third quarter, Toroman took out Aguilar, and the coach started screaming at the player’s face, ignoring the rest of the action until the buzzer sounded. Japeth didn’t even look like he was listening anymore, just walking to the very end of the bench. He never returned, as Toroman went with the twin tower combination of Douthit and Slaughter.

The Gilas management might want to consider shipping Aguilar out of the team, perhaps to Talk N Text as replacement for Kelly Williams. Maybe, with nurturing from Chot Reyes and Norman Black, Aguilar’s confidence can be nursed back to health and his immense potential could still be salvaged.

  • Gilas needs to improve its zone offense; Jordan went on its big run by playing a 2-3 zone.

  • If Williams and Ryan Reyes end up joining Smart Gilas, they’d be taking the minutes of Aguilar and Barroca, ironically the two guys we all thought would be carrying the team last year.

  • Near the end of the game, Gilas got a steal and passed ahead to Jayvee Casio, who muffed a fastbreak floater in the lane against Rasheim Wright. Toroman got in his face and started screaming about Casio’s miss, gesturing wildly for a while about how Casio should have done it.

There are two ways to look at this sequence. One is that Coach Rajko, ever the perfectionist, expects only the very best from his players. The other is that, well, that was a tough shot for Casio, and Toroman was being kind of a dick.

  • If Jordan beats the Dongguan Leopards tomorrow, which they should, Gilas would have another shot at Jordan on Sunday.

Good work. Agree with practically all that you've said.

They made an adjustment to the zone defense but it was too late in the game to make a difference. The only problem with playing Marcus together with Greg is that Marcus will have a hard time guarding the much quicker 4's of the other team. But i Love Marcus' soft touch and that is something CJ giles doesn't have at all. But yes, he isn't half as explosive as CJ.

Barroca has been out of it lately. He has been that way since Doha and we have had a hard time figuring it out.

The zone defense has been our biggest nemesis. We also had a lot of troubles with the zone defense of the Chinese team the other day. But i feel confident that we will have a much better showing on Sunday vs Jordan.

Turnovers and offensive rebounding killed us.

Marcus Douthit will not play tomorrow vs the Gin Kings. Chris Lutz also sprained his ankle pretty bad before the game ended so let's see about that. And yes, he still has to get the system.

Lassiter played great today despite coming one and a half hours past the call-time due to a miscommunication. Luckily coach was quite forgiving this time.

We know the plays of Jordan and talked about it but it was hard to counter them and do the proper switching without any practice. BUt it looks like they won't get the chance to practice before Sunday's game anyway.

Japeth has really been underperforming. But he did play good vs the chinese team. As for Ryan Reyes, Coach is content with his backcourt and most probably will not add him, especially if that Chris Banchero guy comes in. We shall see.

Is Japeth a local version of Darko? has potential but lost it somehow.
#3 deerman on 2010-06-26 05:59 (Reply)
You are absolutely correct Sir Jaemark!

Mr. Toroman is being a huge dick!
We all thought that Japeth is gonna be a big hit if he will be handled by a good mentor, and we all thought that mentor is going to be Rajko Toroman but it seems like Japeth landed in the wrong hands and in the wrong person. Seems to me Rajko Toroman is no different to Yeng Guiao, with all due respect to these men they have been coaching their whole lives but for me their coaching style is rubbish.

My opinion is this Developmental Team isn't being developed at all.

'nuff said..

thanks!!!

deerman,

i think it's kind of unfair to say that the team isnt being developed at all. though i agree that japeth's improvement is barely noticeable, some members of the team are now way better players than before.

just look at baracael. he was just an okay power forward for feu. now he's a fairly potent weapon and he's holding his own against guys much bigger than him.

it's okay to be critical of the team, i just think saying nothing good is happening is a little too harsh.
#5 commenter on 2010-06-26 08:59 (Reply)
people who end their opinions with "nuff said" are much bigger dicks than coach rajko. these "nuff said people" think that they know everything, hence, saying there's nothing else left to say.

anyway, on smart gilas, it seems like they're a bit behind schedule. douthit seems a solid performer. i hope they gel quickly.
#6 OTB on 2010-06-26 10:51 (Reply)
Sorry but to be quite frank, Rajko hasn't developed any of his players.

Japeth Aguilar still relies on his athleticism rather than skill. He can't post up, wants to play small forward but can't dribble in the paint, and bites on every pump fake. Beau Belga is a far superior player than Aguilar at this point offensively and defensively (just doesn't have the hype, athleticism and height, but skills wise, he's better).

Chris Tiu is too slow on defense to be a starting point guard. Casio's too short, ditto with Barroca. Take all the strong points of the current SG guards, make 'em taller and you have Ryan Reyes- can shoot, defend, slash and hey-- pull down double digit rebounds.

Of all the names on the roster, only Mac Barracael and Greg Slaughter are keepers. The rest either needs to shape up or be shipped out.

And we're still relying heavily on our import rather than playing solid team ball. How many times has a local player led the team in scoring? It's usually the import who does all the scoring (rebounding is to be expected of him anyway).
#6.1 gilasinsider on 2010-06-26 11:33 (Reply)
You must not have watched them play quite enough.

The only reason why coach wants kelly williams is because japeth is struggling hard and mac baracael is so inconsistent. he had a great performance in Dubai and has been struggling after.

And as for Slaughter, He is someone Coach has developed so much. Just a few years back Ateneo was killing him and his team and he was looking terrible on the court but now he looks more like a player.

Tiu may be too short or small but he has been the 2nd leading rebounder on the team consistently and the #1 assist guy. not to mention their obvious leader who gels the team together plus their best shooter. those are enough reasons why he should be there.

We seem to think we know more than Coach Raijko but uhh hes the one coaching the team and not us. The only player he has publicly said he wanted was Kelly Williams. For Ryan Reyes its just the media who keeps on saying he wants him, although he is a good player. Barroca is playing bad while Casio just got back from an injury but coach has been happy with them.

Of course we have to rely on our import. I'll ask you something, how many times do the lakers heavily rely on Kobe Bryant? How many times has another player led their team in scoring? It's usually Kobe who does all the scoring. But they won the championship not only because of him but because of their team and their system.

As for Japeth, he's very hyped up cause he is athletic and he can dunk and entertain. those are the things Filipinos love to see. I don't blame them. But if he were really that good, maybe he would have played more in Western Kentucky. Maybe he'd average more than 1 minute a game and won't have too much DNP's.
You can only develop a player too much, but you can't teach Basketball IQ or basketball sense. those are things he lacks very much and they can't afford that in the international game. He constantly forgets to box out his man, he makes all the wrong decisions in the game. He is showing an attitude. We can't always blame the coaches for how the players are performing. BUt it is very typical of us Filipinos.

ive kept an eye on SG just like every other pinoy basketball fan. im not against the team, but i am definitely for improving it. with the players they have at their disposal (read: MVP backed/connected teams like Ateneo, San Beda, TNT, Santa Lucia-Meralco, Barako Bull and even Air21), we should get the best available semi-young talent pronto and not settle for quick fixes or bank on fil-am potentials.

ryan reyes is legit. you might be the one who isn't watching pba games. he's not as flashy as jayjay, or as gritty as alapag, but dude can rebound, defend, score and orchestrate. think gerry esplana, only with great rebounding skills. think wynne arboleda, minus the kanto gulang.

im a fan of barracael's. and slaughter's. that's why i said that they're KEEPERS.

if aguilar continues with all the drama, then he should be cut. or reprimanded. wouldnt surprise me if the kid's gotten big-headed over all the hype. to me, he's as raw as the nba's dwight howard. all athleticism, little/unpolished skill.

to be quite honest, and i think a lot of people would agree, i still believe that tim cone is better than rajko toroman. just my two cents. from in game adjustments to developing players and defining their roles for them (EJ Feihl played his best years wearing an Alaska jersey, and just look at how Sonny Thoss has improved from his PBL days).

still, i support SG, just wish they could get better players if they really want to win.

and on your import: Kobe analysis, i'd have to disagree. wasnt the plan to get a big who can rebound and do the blue collar things while our locals carry the offense? not the other way around wherein the locals do the dirty work and the import plays like a pba import and drops 30 and 10s. from what i've seen so far, we've been taking our cue from whichever import is around and goes from there. and maybe, just maybe, the SBP could get TWO imports instead of one since that's allowed in international competition anyway (Northern Consolidated Cement played with THREE). A big and a small, similar to how Harbour Center did it in the ABL with Gabe Freeman and Jason Dixon. Enough with the naturalization thing, it won't happen, not with our economy. So just have the big guys open their wallets and spend spend spend.

hope everything works out for SG though, pilipinas pa din yan.
#6.1.1.1 gilasinsider on 2010-06-26 23:48 (Reply)
we can only play one import in the fiba asia championship. And he can't play if he is naturalized. Well, if you look for a player who can rebound and he can add scoring and a touch then why not get him? Coach Raijko says this is his best import here among all of them. he has the best basketball iq, the best touch, and he has great spacing. He may not be as athletic as Cj giles and he lacks the energy that they bring but he is a good enough player.

I doubt Aguilar will be cut because he still gives us height we sorely lack but he needs to be more consistent. I admit i haven't watch Ryan Reyes enough but he is my friend and i am definitely not a hater. Coach likes him too but he is quite content with his two point guards. but who knows, with the way barroca is playing i dont know what might happen but i Highly doubt it.

As for Tim Cone, I agree he is a really good coach and maybe one of the best in the PBA> he is one of the few coaches with a system that is really good and that the players follow. But in saying that he is better than coach Raijko, i don't really know. He maybe good for the PBA, but the international system is very different. Coach Raijko is best suited for international ball. and he is one of the best out there. He is really respected all over asia and internationally yet it seems the people of this country are the ones doubting him alot and thinking he isn't good.

To me, realistically speaking. This olympics is practically impossible but what we can target with a great chance should be the 2014 world championships. if we keep this program and the system of coach, pretty sure we would end up qualifying for that.

You're crazy in comparing Japeth with Dwight Howard. Dwight may not be polished offensively but at least he is a presence and someone you have to double team on offense. Add to the fact he's a banger and someone extremely physical. He's also the best defensive big man in the NBA. He can change games single handedly on the defensive end. He rebounds. blocks, guards pick and rolls, shows against penetrating guards. I don't like Howard a lot but to say he's all talent and no polish? Basketball is more than scoring or offensive moves. If not for him, Orlando would give up 140 points a game.

He is a DEFENSIVE center ala Bill Russel. He was never meant to be an offensive machine like Shaq. That's as much as I can say to Japeth who is afraid of contact and does not even rebound or play that good a defense. Please before you compare players, at least know their talents and skill sets and how they play the game. What you did was compare apples and oranges.
#7 gilasinsider on 2010-06-26 12:29 (Reply)
Just dont forget this Jordan team has been together ever since Chot's team played against them which makes this their 4th or 5th year plus together. we've been together for a year only and Marcus just came in, Lassiter and Lutz also just joined. So it isn't that easy.

And this team is playing in the world championships for a reason and we are not. Our last PBA team that tried to play against them finished 8th in the tournament and underperformed. We've been sending PBA players and they haven't qualified in ages. it's about time we try something new. BUT BUT, if only teams would let their pba players get out of their contracts and play for this team only, full time then maybe coach could get some of the guys you are suggesting that he would want but we all know that is not happening.

#8.1 gilasinsider on 2010-06-26 22:51 (Reply)
They counter Coach Raijko's defense with the zone d. No team can play them Man to man straight up because they will be destroyed by his system. Yes, even i agree Chris plays too much minutes. He had 33, 32 and 27 minutes in these past 3 days, which is by far the most in their team. I guess coach just trusts him so much and he orchestrates the team pretty good.

Not as simple to just say lend players to the Gilas team. The PBA is its own entity and even if it is with the mother team (TNT). It has to go through a lot of processes and PBA players cannot commit to training full time with the developmental team. Besides, don't think coach really wants anyone else.

Jason is a player who works extremely hard and hustles but he just doesnt have the offensive tools nor the height. It will always be the Import first, then Greg. Although if there is no import, jason and rabs will play behind Greg.

Japeth was exceptionally impressive and instrumental in thier last game here in Australia winning a close game against the Sydney Comets. He was dunking all over the place and had a consistent medium range shot, he was an offensive threat that night. I was excited for him and rest of the Gilas team's future then. I hope the bosses can help sort out whatever issures personal or otherwise bugging this talented guy, remove any obstacles hindering his development, and shouldnt let such a huge potential of a player go to waste.

he has good games once in a while. he was okay vs the chinese team the other day and played pretty good a while ago vs Ginebra. He had 8 rebounds which is pretty high for him. It is very hard when a 6'8 power forward who spends more than 20 minutes on the floor ends up with 2-3 rebounds only. Yes, i also heard he was great in that game but it is the little things like rebounding, help defense, making the right pass which are his problems.

hey sir gilasinsider,

we are only expressing our opinions to Coach Rajko Toroman and we deliver our thoughts truly and honestly.
Seeing and projecting the team complete is nice but to be honest, I don't see the planned team of Sir Rajko Toroman being in the Finals of Fiba Asia.

*hold-up! don't be angry at all.. let's just keep stuff calm and sophisticated.

I'll give you a player evaluation of your team sir, please forgive me if you think I'm a little inaccurate.

Tiu- very good offensive player, always composed and a good shooter. a very vocal leader of the team.. needs more ball handling drills.

Barroca- very reliable offensive player, good at stealing the ball from other guards and running the fast break, needs to polish his passing skills.

Casio- impressive passing and offensive skills. when he gets his groove back he'll be unstoppable.

Baracael- inconsistent at times but very deadly when on. reminds me of a Mark Caguioa.. he needs to be a consistent perimeter player because he always get the open looks.

Aguilar- needs to build up his physical game. needs to use his wits in defending. loose your kili-kili a little bit my friend, bukaka, wag mahiya. you are a very gifted player.. focus on d game.

Slaughter- very good, impressive, ^^

Ballesteros- very good too. undersized but still good.

Ababou - very good, needs to polish his 3 pointer w/c we need badly. and improve his already good defense.

Lutz-needs to swallow the team system. very good defender and shooter.

Lassiter- very good too, good shooter

Douthit- good player, but we must still have another import because there would be times that he'll foul out of the ball game or get injured at times.

Kelly Williams, will be a great factor when he gets into the team.

7'0 import that can play like or better than Slaughter and a bulky or active PF 6'9 -6'11 would be nice.

Imagine the possibilities with that starting line-up

7'0 import - Slaughter
6'9 athletic PF - Japeth/Ballesteros
Kelly Williams - Baracael/Lassiter
Chris Tiu - Lutz/Ababou
Mark Barroca - Casio

you should really think of the possibilities if we can only have that team..and a third PG from the PBA would be better.

3 top PBA PG picks for SGT
Alapag-Mercado-Ryan Reyes
#9.1.1.1 gilasinsider on 2010-06-27 15:48 (Reply)
good job. i'd agree with most except that Baracael plays 4 for coach Raijko. but when Kelly williams comes, he will probably slide down to the 3 and play 4 occasionally when Japeth is out of the game. Ballesteros is a very long shot to make the team. Aldrech Ramos will probably be in the mix too because he spaces the floor well.

I love the way alapag plays and he would be a good fit except he is kinda old. Ryan reyes i like too. But i heard that Chris Banchero the guy who tried out with them is pretty good. dont know if he will come here though, but if he does, he might be the third one.
#9.1.1.1.1 deerman on 2010-06-28 07:31 (Reply)
yeah i see that Baracael plays 4 in Coach Rajko's rotation. that's why he always get the open looks.. well I really hope Banchero will play for the team..

and I also agree that Alapag is old for the team, but seeing him play in the PBA and in the International games really impresses me. El Khatib of Lebanon asked where was Alapag the last time they played against the Powerade team, I guessed he was a fan of Jimmy too..Lol..^^

why is Ballesteros out? yep Ramos is good too but he really needs to bulk up and polish his perimeter game.

thanks gilasinsider for the compliments!!

2 guard line-up is not good, should have had a bigger 2 on that.
