Skyrus arrives to resurrect the Alaska Air Force, as Willie Thriller joins the Barangay Ginebra Security Agency

Patricia Hizon broke news of the blockbuster trade on Twitter this morning: Alaska sent two-time PBA Most Valuable Player Willie Miller to Ginebra in exchange for the electric Cyrus Baguio.

Alaska coach Tim Cone told the Manila Bulletin that Miller had wanted out of the team for the last two years, but the Aces didn’t bite until this offer came along.

My first thought after hearing the news was that it felt like another Wacky Trade for Alaska. Credentials-wise, Ginebra seems to have made out like bandits in the trade. Miller is the best player on Alaska, and was the main man of a team that made two straight Philippine Cup finals appearances. Baguio, meanwhile, had been relegated to a backup job in Ginebra’s crowded backcourt, playing behind Mark Caguioa, Ronald Tubid, and JC Intal.

But a closer look at the basketball merits of the trade reveals that it isn’t quite as simple. Miller, who played heavy minutes (more than 35 per game in the Fiesta Conference) as Alaska’s top gun, will be joining a Ginebra line-up that, with reigning MVP Jayjay Helterbrand, has enough guards to open a security agency. It remains to be seen how Miller will adjust to a smaller role; even when he played with loaded teams with Red Bull and Talk N Text, he always was a main focus of the offense, something that doesn’t look likely with Ginebra. He will also be forced to play more minutes at the point guard spot, which he can do, but it’s not his ideal position. Miller is also older than Baguio, and his transfer adds years to a nearly geriatric Ginebra squad.

(By the way, I don’t think Ginebra is done trading.)

At first glance, Cyrus Baguio seems like an odd fit for Alaska, which features a plodding offensive attack anchored on floor spacing, outside shooting, and pounding the ball down low. Alaska’s vaunted triangle is predicated on getting the best possible shot in the halfcourt, while lulling their opponents to sleep with crisp passes that swing the ball from the strong side to the weak side.

But Alaska didn’t always play this way. In fact, Tim Cone’s earliest PBA teams were run-and-gun machines. They played such an exciting style that the television panel unofficially dubbed them the Alaska Air Force, which is a much cooler nickname than their current one, by the way. Their best player happened to be Paul Alvarez who, like Baguio, was blessed with a lightning-quick first step, mad hops, and a ridiculous ability to make twisting layups in the air. In one Ginebra broadcast last conference, Quinito Henson said that Baguio is the new Samboy Lim, which is wrong in so many ways, not least of which is the fact that Skyrus’ game is heir not to the Skywalker, but to Mr. Excitement. Let’s just hope Baguio doesn’t end up getting shot outside a seedy sauna with Allen Sasan.

I’m frankly excited about Cyrus Baguio raising hell on the break all game once again, and here’s hoping Cone loosens the reins. They have a recipe to do it too, with big guys in Sonny Thoss and Samigue Eman to control the boards and a dynamic point guard in LA Tenorio who could push the ball like the wind.

So right now, I think this trade will end up favoring Alaska. Then again, while Alaska team manager Joaqui Trillo has made a lot of good trades for his team, his record hasn’t been perfect. In 2000, Alaska traded former MVP Johnny Abarrientos to Pop Cola (later Coca-Cola), figuring that the star point guard’s career was on the way down, but it wasn’t, as Abarrientos ended up leading the Tigers to a couple of championships.

So how will the trade shake out? We’ll get our first look this coming Friday, as Alaska faces Ginebra in the main game of the PBA.

you must get a tall guy in the center because we need a athletic player like aguilar and williams and norwood ever fajardo then after the fiba we lose or win the pure taller player filipino must have a very good training and discipline......

ahhh the old Alaska Air Force...
led by mr.Air-varez him self.
those we're goodtimes!

can't wait for the Cyrus era!

agree with you Jaemark, as an aces fan Im glad to see choker miller out and cyrus in. But I think Cyrus should show that he's a clutch player.. If miller made 2 free throws during the 2008 afc game 7 finals and made both FT last finals, alaska could have been on a much better place in the history.

who will be LA's backup? Those two hogged the PG minutes.
#7 Angrypeople on 2010-04-29 06:45 (Reply)
Have to agree that Miller has been choking big time the past couple of years ..... big time.

He'll find Ginebra a difficult fit since most of Ginebra's guards are channeling Asaytono's offense ....... shoot whenever he sees fit ...... with Tubid feeling like he's Jordan or something.

first of all, i like the trade in terms of talent and the added height of 6'2 cyrus compared with a 5'11 miller.

On cyrus being the next bong alvarez, parang mas gusto ko yung cyrus being the next jojo lastimosa. I hope he develop his shooting skills like jojo did. During his younger years, athletic din si jojo and mataas tumalon but as he grew old he learned that a reliable perimeter shooting is also a lethal weapon.

dude, baguio is already 29 yrs old. at this point, he is what he is.
#9 The Derby Ace King on 2010-04-29 10:32 (Reply)
advantage alaska,

tim cone knows talent when he sees one, and after a long time of asking for a trade, willie finally got his wish, that says a lot about what tim cone wants, and he know he will get it in cyrus.

talent-wise, who can tell? the question is which team can maximize the use of the talent they got? a talent sitting on the bench can do no good? and with a loaded backcourt on the gins roster, are we sure this is willie's final destination?

on the other hand, when a alaska makes a blockbuster trade, they will definitely use what they got, but hold your horses, it does always give a positive result. but the good thing is alaska is becoming younger, faster and with talents that are yet to peak. they may not harvest it immediately, but with the new face of alaska (comparing it to the 07 fiesta champion) things might work out.

and i don't see it stopping here, they are some vets in this aces team that might just follow the likes of nic, mike, john and willie. who knows, changes are always good.

Partner, Tim Cone had this rare sequence of meeting both Miller and Baguio at the Alaska practice. MIller said goodbye to the organization while Baguio was ushered in. The two former teammates with the Powerade-Pilipinas team even shook hands and the somewhat awkward moment turned out to be a passing of the torch for the Aces' campaign this conference. Yes, even Tim told me that Willie wanted out, but he was amazed on the professionalism of Miller. "He could have forced his way out, but instead, he brought in the same winning attitude that carried us twice in the finals," said Cone on Miller.

As for Baguio, Cone said LA Tenorio has found a new running mate and they never had a good consistent finisher off the break since the time of Jeff Cariaso in the team's grandslam year in 1996.

I've been an Aces fan since the franchise acquired Jeffrey
Cariaso. I've been thrilled with the contribution of the Thriller.
If he wanted to leave then I am OK with the trade. Good luck,
Willie!

You will not get the playing time with Ginebra. In fact you will
not be happy playing with the club. I am sure you'll ask to be
traded again.

I am excited to see Skyrus play thirty minutes a game. Maybe L.A.
Tenorio will get more looks. He should be the focal point
of the offense in my opinion. Go Aces!!
#13 alas on 2010-04-29 21:27 (Reply)
It is not who is more talented between the two but who has the better fit and utilized right.

On that point Miller loses as he is employed by a security agency. While Skyrus seems to be a missing piece in the championship puzzle.
#14 Angrypeople on 2010-04-29 22:20 (Reply)
It's not just a whole bunch of guards for Ginebra ....... but these are the Asaytono-type of guards ....... shoot now, ask questions later. Willie may take a while to fit in.

OT: Like I has been saying for many years now ....... Jong Uichico is without a doubt the most PAMPERED coach in all of professional basketball (the NBA included).

Where else can you find a coach who has been "SPONSORED" by the countrys top crony este businessman !!! ..... from his collegiate & amateur playing days (DLSU & Northern Cement) through his assistant coaching jobs (San Miguel) then onwards to his collegiate head coaching (DLSU) finally to pro coaching (SMB, GIN) ..... all supplied with the best talent available & with the best help from the re..... well never mind this last item.
#14.1 Yebah on 2010-04-30 06:43 (Reply)
yeah, i don't have respect of the guy's coaching ability. uichico's championships, you could say, are breastfed.

that's the worth of willie miller, a cyrus baguio? come on! there must be a "plus pick" here. i don't know if miller's value has been degraded or baguio's value raised. maybe the reason why they opted for baguio is because he was the nephew of ric ric marata(+). he he he.

alaska is going young, fast, and tall. i say stop emulating the grandslam and 1998 alaska players. those cannot be replaced.
#14.1.1 Angrypeople on 2010-04-30 10:51 (Reply)
Willy Miller has always been a rare talent ..... ever since he first played for Letran.

But Miller has choked through the big games throughout his PBA career ..... he can light it up through the eliminations but fuck it up during tight important games.

Dont get me wrong, Miller is still effective ..... who knows, the Ginebra crowd often does wonders to a players game.

Baguio is a nice talent also ...... the good thing about him is, he goes with the flow of the game ...... scores when needed, a very decent passer/set-up guy & plays the passing lanes on defence well. He'll fit nicely with Cone's plays.

Fair trade for me.
#15 KG21 on 2010-04-30 16:00 (Reply)
I guess, this is only a transition stop for Miller...maybe after this conference, he'll be going to either Purefoods or SMB!!!
#16 seecraftsfurniture.multiply.com on 2010-05-02 21:50 (Reply)
Skyrus has played well in his 2-game stint with d aces so far.

He had a tremendous 4th quarter vs ginebra and single-handedly lifted his team to victory.

Cone didn't play him enough in his 2nd game as an Ace, but he nonetheless played well. if only coach tim played him more!
#16.1 yebah on 2010-05-04 07:45 (Reply)
maybe the reason why he wasn't allowed to play that much is for cyrus to watch and learn what is the triangle and how to play it. tim cone said it himself during the post game interview of their fight with ginebra that cyrus isn't aware that he is disrupting the triangle.
#17 Katekyo on 2010-05-03 13:17 (Reply)
I've seen the last 2 games of Alaska with Cyrus Baguio on the team. He played well!!!!
And I think he is the missing puzzle of a championship win for Alaska.

To Wilie,

Thank you for the run, it was good while it lasted though we missed a couple of championships.

Good luck to you.
#19 demon_speed on 2010-05-05 19:01 (Reply)
I disagree, Baguio has a crossover, a lightning first step, and makes yo-yo shots in mid-air much like Samboy Lim. Paul Alvarez was a smoother Samboy, more Jordanesque really. and doesnt even have a jump shot. While Samboy had good jump shot just like Baguio.

Johnny was traded for Ali Peek, and Ali peek is still productuve until now. That was a win for Alaska. They wouldnt have won a championship with Johhny there anyway. He bcame a solid PG in his latter years not the franchise guy Alaska needed. ALi fit the bill for Alaska better. They weren't just able to form a good team around Ali. Compared to the Tigers which only needed Johnny to fit alogside Cariaso and Hatfield. Johnny never regained his pre 2000 all-world point guard form. He became a serviceable PG for a veteran team and nothing more.
