Smart Gilas planning to join shitty American minor league

After running roughshod over not-too-elite competition in Australia and getting their asses handed to them by excellent professional teams in Serbia, Smart Gilas took its act to the United States to play several minor league teams from the American Basketball Association. A couple of days ago, Gilas began its campaign by going up against the ABA team based in San Diego (which of course in German means whale’s vagina). It was an exciting match, with birthday boy Mark Barroca sinking a three-point shot with 4.3 seconds left to lead the Filipinos to a 94-93 victory.

But what really caught my eye from this game report by Joey Villar at the Philippine Star was this last line: “If plans don’t miscarry, Smart Gilas will be the second foreign squad to be included in next year’s ABA season as an adopted team by Daly City, next to China’s Beijing Aoshen, headed by former LA Lakers’ guard Sun Yue.”

This would be a good thing, if this were the ABA of Julius Erving and Connie Hawkins, but it’s not. Not even close. It’s like comparing the handsomeness of Chris Tiu to Barroca. It’s laughable.

There are actually several minor leagues in the United States apart from the NBA D-League, such as the Premiere Basketball League (PBL), where current Talk N Text import Shawn Daniels played before his latest PBA stint, and the International Basketball League (IBL), which is home to the likes of former Red Bull import Adam Parada.

So just how bad is the ABA? Scott Schroeder of the excellent D-League blog Ridiculous Upside wrote about the league last year, while discussing Sun Yue and Beijing Aoshen:

The Aoshen, AKA Aoshen Olympian, play in the ABA, which, in its current state, is not exactly a good league. Ever heard of the PBL? It's way below that. IBL? Probably even a bit below that. The ABA is disgusting.

Strong words. But hey, at least Aoshen got to play in the ABA and Sun Yue was drafted by the Lakers, right? But as Schroeder points out in his piece, Sun sucked balls: “In four games in the D-League, the Chinese Magic Johnson didn't impress. Honestly, I'm shocked that he was drafted by the Lakers, as in the three games I saw him play, it looked he belonged back in the ABA with his Chinese traveling team, the Beijing Aoshen.” There are whispers that the only reason he got on the Lakers was because of his marketing value as a Chinese national.

But the terrible state of the league isn’t just because of the inferior talent level, but because of how poorly-run the league is, with teams pulling in and out of the league during the season. From 2001 to 2008, “over 170 teams have folded disbanded, or fallen into a state of disrepair.” The league is a joke, and it is actually being used by sports editors in US cities for comic relief:

In doing this story there were some interesting tales that were uncovered and one of the best is about coach came into New Jersey with only four players so he asked where the local YMCA was and 'recruited three or four players' for that one night.

A Rochester executive (Rochester, like Halifax quit the A.B.A. last year just before the playoffs) told me that one team had six players and a '13th man'. That is a home town person who may get into a game towards the very end of the contest.

"But in this case the 13th man was used almost as a regular since they simply didn't have any players. It was pathetic," the executive told TSN.ca

The ever-changing lineup of teams has taken its toll on the league, and the mental health of the people involved in it, according to OurSports Central:

Though every team is supposed to play a 36-game slate, the league has played less than half its scheduled games to this point, and more than 100 additional games will be cancelled because of the teams that are no longer playing. Other teams have cancelled games without explanation. Additionally, several dozen more contests were never scheduled, and teams have resorted to playing semi-pro or amateur teams to fill their home dates. The Atlanta Vision for instance, has played just three ABA games and have only 12 more scheduled against league opposition.

In an email sent to [ABA CEO Joe] Newman and the ABA office, Texas Tycoons General Manager Mike Senters expressed his frustration with the constantly eroding schedule. "What are we actually selling to the public? Fast paced, fan friendly, affordable, cancellations?" he asked, while noting he wanted the league to improve.

Aoshen joined the ABA in 2005, playing its home games in California (while driving former Suns forward Paul Shirley, who had a short stint with the team, damn near crazy). In 2007, the team decided to move its home games to Singapore, flying their opposition halfway around the world. The accommodations were less than ideal:

Houston Takers owner Larry Leonard blamed the mildew-ridden hotel in which his team stayed after several of his players became ill. Others cited a different distraction.

“Our hotel was small and cramped,” said Maywood (Cal.) Buzz General Manager Burrell Lee. “There were hookers everywhere, knocking on our door in the hotel.”

Perhaps this note on OurSports Central about the ABA says it best about the prospects of the league: “OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.”

Funnily enough, last December 2009, the ABA announced an ambitious $200-million global expansion program led by Paul Monozca, a Filipino based in Singapore who calls himself a “sports philantrophist.” It is through Monozca’s roots that Smart Gilas is now playing in the ABA. At the start of the Gilas trip, he announced, “The Smart-Gilas team's debut in the ABA is a historic one. The country has been dreaming of playing pro basketball in the United States, same as teams from all over the world. Today, the dream has become a reality. ABA Global is here.”

After everything you just read about the ABA, would you still believe this man?

Ah, Mr FQ again writing something productive.

Seriously, why dont you just give Mr. Eala a call and tell him you thoughts?

total crap! it's just a waste of money. if i were MVP, i would just enter ABL. hehehe!
#2.1 umbro on 2010-04-29 18:31 (Reply)
ABL ?? now why would Philippine Basketball join a small pathetic ASEAN league when they can join a pro league in the USA ??? and what is wrong if THE GAME played ?? everyone has the right to play ball if they choose to. and comparing the ABA now with the PBL league in the states has no comparison. why are you so mad at the ABA when they are the ones who are visible and showing the world they are building stadiums, having international teams and have television ? so where is this PBL and CBA league ? show me. not even euro league will be able to change the fact that the Philippines is an extension of the USA even in terms of culture so joining a pro league in the US is more fulfilling. besides there are too many anomalies in FIBA and the only other option is the ABA
#3 Fanboy on 2010-04-27 23:19 (Reply)
Yeah, I am a GILAS fan but I think this may be a waste of time. There are better leagues out there. They need better competition to really improve. I actually think the Serbia trip was FAR more productive than the Australia jaunt.

Reading Ridiculous Upside and how Sun and Tabuse got their asses handed to them in the D-Leagues, makes me wish some of OUR players had a chance to show how .

Size isn't everything in basketball and I still believe we have the best POINT GUARDS in all of Asia.

And our best shot at getting into the big stage is via the one spot. Of course, there are a ton of other point guards out there but don't sell our guys short.

I distinctly remember the late Ric Ric Marata being scouted by a Canadian Pro team in the late 80s.

Or was that some CBA team?

And remember all the hype about Johnny Abarrientos being scouted?

If Jimmy Alapag, JJ Helterbrand... maybe even Jason Castro, LA Tenorio or Mike Cortez played in China or Korea or Japan or the MIddle East, they'd be STARS.

Right now, I think we should start looking at guys like Paul Lee of UE. Maybe even some of the U-18 players who can handle the ball. (I haven't seen enough of Kiefer Ravena to judge his ball handling skills)

They should SKIP the PBA or National Team and maybe just for a few months try their luck in the NBDL.

If they don't make it, they can always come back.

I still Johnny A should have at least tried out. They were already talking about him over in the US like they do playground legends.

regardless whether the ABA gets to have a regular schedule of games and not having its teams suddenly disappear like bubbles, I think it is still a wrong move to pit Gilas over American teams. their system under coach Rajko is patterned after the European system which is better for the RP team as it emphasizes shooting skills and creating plays rather than one-on-one/post moves (which is only successful if you have beanpoles as players) that are prevalent in American leagues(which sadly is the one that Filipinos are copying).

If they were to join as a guest team in some foreign league, the might as well search along the european continent

THESE ARE ALL PUBLICITY FOR SMART-GILAS!

that they won these games, almost sweep the australians, that they win against american teams, that they target a very impossible dream of playing in the olympic, winning the lone slot at the qualifying FIBA-ASIA, blah blah blah!!

and if they lose, keep trying, the opponents are faster and heftier, they played with lots of heart, CHOCHOS, AND CHOCHOS!!

this developmental national team at the very least is a good investment and for a good cause. but they are not playing against top clubs and take a win. when they lose against the serbian clubs, no extensive news were heard. but when they won with non-competitive other teams, all the praises! ALL THE PUBLICITIES!!

where are you GOING smart-gilas team? where are we upto? even if your trips are paid by private investors, make the most of it. DONT SQUANDER!

JUST LOOKING AT THEIR GROUP PICTURE IN THE losangeles slam website, they look like a bunch of out-of-school-youths who are fond of playing street bukoball!!

yan lang. kakadisappoint!

its a pity how a reject like you would criticise how gilas as a team should do this and that. you now hit out at the ABA and even try to promote your own choice, the stupid D-league PBL. let me put it across to your stupid brain, whatever you say the fact of the matter if a television tycoon in China has put in his money with Beijing Aoshen to join the ABA and now this tycoon Paul Monozca in Singapore has now put in his money also to expand the league. ABA teams were sent to China (10 of them) last year and now, Gilas is competing in the USA. So stick the PBL league up your ass cuz you cant stop a $200million freight train. listen old man, if i were you, go get a job or something because you had your chance. now if you are the guy with money then maybe the public will start listening to you. anyway, ABA is achieving a good thing for world basketball and the Gilas team has had that opportunity. too bad you cant stop it cry baby :)

what kind of a league is the ABA in the first place if you have someone like "The Game" who plays there?

news flash !!! heard a russian oil tycoon will be joining his good friend and ABA Global vice-chairman Paul Monozca in funding the ABA. So its China, Russia and Singapore which have come in. Their advisory board also includes big names in basketball. wow .... now how in the world are a bunch of unknown critics going to stop that when they have lost every single fight in court to even smear the ABA ??? simple : when you dont have money - dont even think of being somebody in the world of pro basketball ! people are not so stupid when there is a saying "TRUTH PREVAILS". and to ABA teams who are not performing well, I heard there is a huge revamp and there will be cuts to only maintain a circle of teams so its shape up or ship out. and here goes the facts .......
#11 jaemark on 2010-04-29 20:08 (Reply)

seriously brothers, if the ABA had issues before it it quite different when you get backers to come and fix the problems and revitalize the league. the smart gilas team won 1 out of 3 games in the ABA friendship series. fact is they won against the san diego team who is ranked in the bottom 30's in a field of 50 teams. they lost to both los angeles and riverside. so gilas has a lot to prove but they are getting there. i would love to see them win a division championship even in california for next years ABA games - but what it does for the Philippines and achieving the dream of its players to play in the USA is priceless. get back to work
#13 gary on 2010-04-30 12:03 (Reply)
the dudes who represent minor leagues in the usa should stop commenting on this blog as the ABA comparison now with its financial backing is the NBA and FIBA. So stop comparing your stupid PBL league in the US to the ABA. there is no comparison. and for your info, this is the ABA of superstars like George Gervin, Dr J etc and a revitalized one. Now again, on the other leagues not in the league of the ABA and the NBA and FIBA, go get a job. this blogspot is for filipinos only so get lost. We support the ABA because filipino tycoons are now involved in it so why not you get american tycoons to support your league so it can become international also .... the benchmark is $200million ,,,,, anything less is a big joke. I will give you a hint ...... YOU CANT DO SHIT ... :)

I actually went to this game out of curiosity, I am a first gen Fil-Am, my parents emigrated to the US when they were single. The game was in a sparsely attended Junior College gym! I heard the subsequent LA game was in a high school gym. Professional league? Give me a break. All of these guys probably have full time jobs outside of bball then show up at night for games.
Seriously the ABA is like an big city upper level YMCA league with ex-high school stars and college drop outs, not a single person you would recognize and I'm a big US NCAA fan.
I agree with your assessemnt that SG shouldn't be in this league and are better of running drills and scrimmages. The SD surf had had no set plays, it's all run and gun or big man isolation except it looks way sloppier. I don't see an advantage to be in the league because SG will play down to the level of the competition (run/gun/isolation) and the risk of injury is high over time given that most of the ABA players are strong, athletic but talentless basketball thugs.

holy cow ! bragging about your education ? the reason why you are in the states is cuz you are nobody back in the phils. also heard you couldnt get into a team so stop the grudging and start practice. i drive a bentley. the rest is better left unsaid unlike you.
#16 indigoblue on 2010-05-03 11:11 (Reply)
I also went and from what I understand, the venues could not be booked in advanced because the national team requested their entry 1 week before the schedule. Gilas won 1 out of 3 games - the experience to play in the ABA was more important than the venue ! unless you want to join the scores of our countrymen who dream about the NBA the past 50 years at least the entry to the ABA has happened ! u can either remain as a critic or spectator or start participating ... what will it be ? or are u trying to promote other D-leagues which have the players u mentioned in yr message ? you put down and insult players for having jobs outside the ABA ? what does that have to do with playing basketball ? I think you have to contemplate on going to college first so dont act as if u know something because I would be interested to see yr track record so we can see if u are worth listening to :)
#16.1 RD on 2010-05-04 21:27 (Reply)
I don't think the experience of playing the ABA is valuable. That is my main point. I am not putting down ABA players from having jobs outside of bball, the point is that these are not highly skilled players or experienced coaches otherwise the players or coaches would be in the NBDL or in Europe. I don't know of any ABA player (or coach) that has progressed to the NBA or even European leagues. Perhaps you can enlighten me. Also I graduated from DUKE and have houses both in Los Angeles and San Diego and attend Lakers and Clipper games often. I would bet that you have not seen more quality LIVE basketball than me. In closing I support Gilas but the SD Surf/Gilas game was a waste of time and the risk of injury to Slaughter at the hands of basketball thugs are too high.

whoa .... i drive a lambo and a range r ... i have houses in 4 countries. i head a business with a market cap of USD2B .... i say i give the ABA a chance with its new backing cuz for a guy to start bragging about his pedigree and that he went to Duke just tells me he is a mommas boy. we only deal with decision makers here. btw, i am at courtside at NBA games, where do u sit ?

#17 chris13 on 2010-05-03 13:02 (Reply)
the reason its called a developmental team is because of the fact that it is still under development... a slow one at that. we have the best talent in asia we just need to put them to good use. first of all we are lacking programs for small ball. small all is the high school level and the inter baranggays there are a lot of talent there we just need go give them the proper platform to get to the big stage. lets set up a tournament for high school championships that the schools are able to contend nationally let me give you an example UV is great in the visayas region how about we take UV and ateneo or la salle and san beda and see who really is the king! my point is we need a national tournament that doesnt limit players development by pitting them against the best for us to be great we need great competition.
#18 dragnet on 2010-05-03 16:01 (Reply)
the guy promoting the PBL in the states is a lawyer named Kymn Harp who lost his job. he has no income and gets his income from his stupid league. he tried to get smart gilas to come to his league so he could make some money. but hey - a national team going to somebody who has no track record in major sports nor the financing to do it ? this guys spends 24 hrs a day on the internet trying to destroy the ABA and the CBA because he is desperate for someone to look at him. So pls dont waste yr time on this nonesense - if the ABA was not worth it, Smart Gilas would have won their games by a margin but they only won 1 out of 3 games. Lets not be too ambitious here but be thankful that Philippine basketball is starting to make in roads in the USA, something which we have always wanted to do. Let politics stay out of the vision

This is nuts! Can't the pro ABA person steal Wi-Fi access so that his/her comments will have different IPs or use some proxy when making sock puppets?! With a proxy, the sock puppet can even make it appear that he/she lives in the same city as Jaemark!

I am Cardcrusher, and I'm not an ABA sock puppet.
