Jamal Sampson’s shadow still looms over Smart Gilas import search

Remember that whole issue with Jamal Sampson? Well, it turns out that he still hasn’t been released from his contract by Smart Gilas. Last week, he wrote in with some bad news:

Well, this story gets better. The knee I hurt in Dubai, that the team was mad that I didn’t play in the final two games, well I took an MRI when I got back to the Philippines, and they told me it was basically tendinitis in my knee, and I was fine.

It’s been two months since Dubai, and I’ve been home here getting therapy on it, and working out and trying to stay in shape, but it’s still bothering me and hurting. So yesterday, my agent made me an appointment with the Los Angeles Clippers team doctor, and I took an MRI, and he told me I have a torn meniscus in my knee, and I need surgery. This was also confirmed by the Lakers team doctor. Two NBA doctors. I’m scheduled for surgery on Tuesday.

And Smart told me my knee was fine.

Sampson followed up by saying that the surgery went well, and he’s scheduled to begin rehab next week. Still, it can’t be a good feeling for Sampson to end up with a knee injury after an ugly contract dispute with his former team, especially since he’s claiming that Gilas still owes him money. (Sampson furnished Fire Quinito with a recent email from an SBP employee discussing details of a wire transfer for his January salary.)

To be fair to the Philippine doctors who checked him out, maybe he didn’t have the torn meniscus yet when he had an MRI here in the country. Still, it’s a good thing that Sampson listened to his body. Otherwise, he would’ve ended up with a much worse injury while stuck with a team that hadn’t been prompt about paying him.

Forgetting about Sampson for a minute, this can’t bode well for Smart Gilas’ chances in getting a top-flight reinforcement for its campaign, with the team already struggling to sign a prospect as it is. It’s the kind of thing that spreads quickly in those American minor league basketball circles.

In fact I asked Sampson about this, and it turns out that some Gilas prospects have already gotten in touch with him: “A couple of their replacement options have contacted me, to ask what happened while I was there, so I told them. So I’m sure that hasn’t helped them.”

Meanwhile, the search continues for Gilas. On Twitter, Charles Tiu (Chris’s brother) reports that the team is looking to bring in former UCLA center Michael Fey, who spent the season with the LA D-Fenders of the D-League.

maybe that's why we're not successful with our import search. Jamal Simpson has been badmouthing about SBP.

as I said, SBP nor Gilas isn't perfect, I hope issues like these don't put SBP or Gilas in a bad light. :) I'm all for Team Philippines.

Sampson is accusing Gilas of not paying him, and forcing him to play when he's injured. It puts Smart Gilas in a bad light. The only way it could get worse is if Greg Slaughter had taken a gun and shot Sampson in the knee.

And no, I don't think Sampson's the only reason Smart Gilas couldn't sign anyone. He's probably more of a symptom than a cause.

from how I understand it, it was his choice whether to suit up for Gilas or not before actually flying in. might the injury be caused by working with Gilas? I don't think so. :(

anyway, me thinks Simpson is using this blog to get a little payback (well he deserves to be paid but still..). Your blog is viewed all around the world, probably by potential recruits, and hearing Simpson's side only (at least for this current issue) doesn't help in the recruitment process. (But then I remember you saying na we shouldn't only cover the bold and the beautiful only, so I get where you're coming from)

Anyway, Happy 1st Anniv to FQ! Good job Jae.

Well, it's not hard for SBP people to get their side out. The blog is always open for response from them, as it was in the case of Toroman.

They have a bigger megaphone than Sampson; remember, Noli Eala's denial about issues raised by Sampson were covered in Quinito's star column on a Sunday.

At the end of the day, the situation can be fixed by the SBP not by being more media-savvy than Sampson, but by doing things right.

This is recycle issue? Sampson is great pretender.
#3 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-04-17 07:09 (Reply)
Methinks this won't help in getting a reinforcement. Agents have a clique group and the players bond well no matter what. So it would be Sampson's and his agent's words against Lim and the SBP.

And Sampson could even use MVP's latest brouhahas to his advantage.

The Sampson issue certainly isn't helping. But I don't know if he's even aware of the MVP issue to even use it. Or I can't see how he's going to use it, if ever.

Smart Gilas having trouble of finding an import can simply be explained in one word, and that word is "karma". If Jamal Sampson's statements are true then the word "karma" best describes the series of failed attempts of having an import for the team.

If the struggle continues of having a naturalized player the odds of our National Team making it to the 2012 London Olympics will be impossible.

I know Smart Gilas is looking for an experienced big man but Ganon Baker [ a famous basketball trainer (ganonbakerbasketball.com) ] gave me a name of a big man who he thinks can play for the team. I asked him using facebook about this and he told me about a player who he trains that is playing in Auburn.

I told Mico Halili & Jason Webb about this using facebook, but to no avail. I guess celebs do not reply in useless things. Lol..

Napaisip lang ako. sayang si CJ Giles noh? He was one guy that really wanted to play for us. And wasnt there even an instance where he even played through a knee injury? Yes he loved the night life here in Manila but cant u let the guy enjoy his time? Sayang. mmya sudan daniels import naten
