Holy crap, Greg Slaughter really is transferring to Ateneo

So the rumors are true: Greg Slaughter, the 6’11” star center of the University of Visayas Green Lancers, is now redshirting for the Ateneo Blue Eagles to be eligible for the 2011 UAAP basketball tournament, Quinito Henson reports in his Philippine Star column. While Quinito downplays Slaughter’s transfer to Katipunan, instead playing up the center’s improvement while training with the Smart Gilas program, the story may have far-reaching implications.

Slaughter first flew to Manila to train with Gilas, a team bankrolled by SBP chairman Manny Pangilinan, who’s also the top patron of the Blue Eagles. It couldn’t have been coincidence that Slaughter chooses to transfer to the same school sponsored by his Gilas principal. Pangilinan pours huge money into Ateneo sports – “between P10 million to P12 million” a year, according to one Inquirer report – and it’s not hard to imagine him or his minions exerting influence on the SBP to steer Slaughter into making the “correct” decision.

I don’t begrudge Slaughter for this. He’s a young man with tremendous potential, so best of luck to him. He probably would develop a lot under the tutelage of Eagles coach Norman Black, a renowned teacher of big men, plus he could spend more time with Gilas. And whatever UV has to offer can probably be trumped by an Ateneo program that’s well-funded – so well-funded, in fact, that the school’s Board of Trustees is willing to overlook certain embarrassing behavior just to keep the money rolling in.

But while the brain trust of UV basketball composed of coaches Boy Cabahug and Al Solis will probably be able to buck the loss of Slaughter and remain competitive, this leaves a terrible taste in the mouth. Actually, it reminds me of the Japeth Aguilar saga. Somehow, I can’t help but get the impression that the SBP, as it exists right now, is not here to look out for the best interests of the whole Philippine basketball community as much as to make sure that each of MVP’s teams – whether it be Gilas, Ateneo, Talk N Text, or even San Beda – always comes out on top.

Now this whole incident with Slaughter could perhaps explain why the University of the East and the University of Cebu are so reluctant to allow their respective stars, Paul Lee and June Mar Fajardo, to join Smart Gilas.

Not surprised with the piracy. After all, remember the RP youth team held by Franz? Most followed him to DLSU and are now in their domain.

The possibility of GS in the Evil Azure Empire has been in discussion for a while as well in the BEN.

With this in the news, Year 4 of the Buenafe / Salva era will have Greg Slaughter, Norman Penola (and hopefully Kiefer Ravena) along for the ride.

wow mvp really likes to "borrow" things..

Prominent businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan may have been delivering speeches with plagiarized passages since 2007 without him even realizing it.

It was his speech writers who did the plagiarizing. c'mon man, if youre president of x companies, and your invited to x number of functions to give out speeches. do you honestly believe that he would write everything?

The head of states have speech writers writing speeches for them! MVP would have not known that some lines were plagiarized!

let's stick to the topic, shall we? please, i'm tired of all this generalization crap. :)
#3 gilasinsider on 2010-04-16 09:19 (Reply)
It was by his choice alone that he transferred to ateneo because he was sick of having to fly back and forth to and from Cebu just to practice probably two times a week. he was being left behind in terms of training. Since he has been training everyday, he improved so much and is now their number 1 center, without the import. He calls academic life in UV boring and not challenging at all.
Smart Gilas is still his priority and he can probably only play two years in ateneo, and by looking at the GIlas schedule, the conflict in their tournament sched would mean he can only play one. And if their contracts are extended then he probably won't get to play at all. He doesn't practice with ateneo and will NOT practice with them until his whole Gilas stint is over.

It really is by his choice. I know it looks bad and all that but it's the truth!

Greg Slaughter is in the top 200 of all those who took the ACET or ateneo entrance exam!!!! wow! the guy is smart!

I think it was a correct decision on his part as his ultimate goal is to play in the PBA. He has to make manila his home base for the smart gilas program and his future career in the PBA. So the most logical choice is joining the ateneo program. He'll get better with the big men training of Ateneo and he'll get an ateneo education at it.

We have to applaud Greg's cebu handlers for looking at the BIG picture. Not like Junmar Fajardo's handlers who would not let him grow and mature in a bigger and better competitive field. He may be the king of the CESAFI league. but c'mon he'll be king against so-so competition. Better to be a fool among kings than a king among fools!

really? i didn't see his name in the top 200 list posted at kostka...
#4.2 Cyrisus on 2011-07-11 18:43 (Reply)
Top 200 in the ACET? Damn you're funny. He's the top 200 in the ACET yet he got a "D" in the first long examination we had in Calculus? Get real.

From larger perspective -
Greg Slaughter moving to Manila for training is for the good of RP basketball -- whether it be in the NCAA and UAAP. The guy has potential and will need the tough competition from either of these two leagues to become better.

My only comment is that there seems to be something wrong in my gut regarding this move -- i couldn't pinpoint whether it's the SBP, MVP, ADMU or something else. (or a combination of them)
#6 Junior tubero on 2010-04-16 10:40 (Reply)
wow. i expect ADMU to go back to back to back after that....

what will become of my favorite team. the UST tigers. tsktsk hahha

it's an understandable decision for Slaughter. train with the best big man coach in the country, study in a good school, make it easier for him to train with smart gilas. why would he not want that, right?

but yeah, the whole MVP influence makes this a bit shady. anyway, all the best to slaughter. his development would surely have a big impact in the country's basketball program
#8 manu_bol on 2010-04-16 13:49 (Reply)
for greg:

world class training - there's smart gilas

good education and academics - there's admu

...why does he need to play for the ateneo varsity, again?
#9 gilasinsider on 2010-04-16 14:04 (Reply)
i assume those defending him are ateneans? haha
well, atenean or not, the point is his biggest reason for transferring to manila was really his commitment to the team.

Oh, and in other Gilas news, the possible import coach is looking at is Michael Fay. He might come in next week. Might.

hey gilasinsider, i'm sure Paul Lee not suiting up with Gilas has something to do with Bong Tan, right? Correct me if I'm wrong.
#9.1.1 gilasinsider on 2010-04-16 16:24 (Reply)
I'm not sure if has something to do directly with bong tan. they say it's because they compensate him with enough to stay in UE. Bong would never admit it to me even if i asked him so i can't really say but for sure, they are compensating him somehow.
#9.1.1.1 jp manahan on 2010-04-16 18:27 (Reply)
i presume paul lee's arguments are better than junmar's.
#10 anders on 2010-05-04 18:03 (Reply)
it's better for UC not to release junmar fajardo to smart gilas team. what happened to greg slaughter probably will happen again to JF,,,UV is a victim of piracy...
#11 carlo on 2010-07-09 00:37 (Reply)
I'm an atenean, but pirating Greg does leave a bad taste in the mouth. Not that I think Greg should stay in UC (I'm also a Cebuano), let's just say I wouldn't mind if other teams wouldn't want to be friendly with SMART Gilas.

bakit ang dami nyo sinasabi sa pagkuha ng ng mga player from one school to another, wala kayung magagawa at pakialam dahil own choice ng player yan kung san nya gusto mag aral, kaya nyo bang hadlangan ang freewill ng isang tao?, tsaka kayang e provide ng ateneo ang ang pinakamagandang education para kay greg at kaya ng ateneo na pasikatin si greg up to PBA, tsaka dollar at first class ang ateneo school at mayaman ang school na ito kaya nilang suportahan ang isang player, kayu kaya nyo bang tumapat, puro kayo pamumuntos, di nyo naman kayang sumabay.

i know this is a really late reply, but i read that La Salle also has new guys now (read it from here: http://www.adlsu.com/2011/02/05/archers-toughen-lineup-to-face-eagles/). so come to think of it, it's all part of the game. the people themselves are part of the strategies. yun lang yun. ;)
#14 Nowy on 2011-07-16 18:28 (Reply)
Uhm Junmar Fajardo is way better, prepared and fundamentaly sound than Greg Slaughter. I've watch these two in Cebu. I think it's better for Greg to be in UAAP than jumping ahead in the PBA or other leagues. Just my opinion though. Peace.
#14.1 azkalero on 2011-08-24 10:19 (Reply)
yeah we know that junmar has good skills...

but the problem is..he and his handlers have no brains..unpatriotic scums who sided with the despised BAP...
