Coming clean on Manny Pacquiao and Adam Carolla

I’d already written before that I laugh at the most inappropriate things, which is why it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that I found parts of Adam Carolla’s rant about Manny Pacquiao funny. I listen to Carolla’s podcast from time to time, and was a fan of both The Man Show and Loveline, the radio call-in show he used to host with Dr. Drew Pinsky.

I was enjoying it when he started calling out Pacquiao for refusing to take a blood test, and actually laughed out loud when he called the pound-for-pound champ a fucking idiot for believing that giving a drop of blood would weaken him.

And when he said that the Philippines needed to “get a fucking life as a country,” I mean, he kinda had a point, didn’t he? That we need something else to be proud of, other than a guy who’s the best at bashing other people’s faces – isn’t that what Conrado de Quiros has been saying all along?

Then Carolla went off the rails with a racist rant about the Philippines and sex tourism, and he really was being an asshole about it. Now that made me cringe, but I don’t know if it’s any different from the cringing I do when the Man Show boy cracks some terribly misogynistic joke at some woman on the street, or when he and Dr. Drew would just go on and on about the sex lives of their Loveline callers.

Then again, I am an awful person, so I don’t know what it means if this kind of thing just washes off my back. Maybe I should be more offended than I was.

Like Manny Pangilinan before him, Carolla has sinced offered his mea culpa. On Twitter, he admitted that he crossed the lined and apologized for his rant, and said that he thought Pacquiao was a great fighter. Perhaps he backed off after Pinoy fans threatened to tear him a new one the size of a Mason jar.

UPDATE (4/8/2010): Carolla offered a formal apology on his website:

I wanted to officially apologize to Manny Pacquiao and the Filipino community for the things I said on my podcast. I think Manny’s a great fighter, and was humbled this morning when I saw that Manny had accepted my apology halfway around the world.

As a Podcaster, I have the freedom to not be censored by a network, which can be a blessing and a curse. As a comedian, I rant as part of my act but my comments were hurtful, and for that I apologize.

I also extend the invitation for Manny to come on the podcast and accept my apology in person.

I dont know if its me being used to their jokes or Filipinos being too onion-skinned. First it was Jay Leno's joke about the Phil. Army's withdrawal of support in Afghanistan, then it was Jon Stewart over the Cory feature.I find the podcast of Adam Carolla being normal like the aforementioned hosts.

Somehow Adam C. has a point such as," what if pacquiao loses, what do we have left?" its the problem of us Filipinos, we dont have our own ideology or battlecry. when 9/11 happened americans vowed to fight for liberty. here, it was ninoy, then flor contemplacion, then another compatriot, then pacquiao. the clamor jumps from one person to another. we do not have something to cling on forever aside from a "a guy who’s the best at bashing other people’s faces

Wala kasing sariling identity ang mga Pinoy.Walang pagkakaisa.Walang pagmamahal sa bayan. Kaya huwag ka nang magtaka kung bakit ganyan.Iba iba kasi ang personalidad ng bawat isa sa atin.

I did not like when he implied that the Philippines has "nothing" besides Manny to be proud of. Filipinos have a very rich pop culture and so many great writers and artists, not to mention academics.

You won't find more great singers in one place than the Philippines. Is it the fault of Filipinos that racist record companies in the west won't sign a Fil-Am or pinoy singer? Yes, there is Lea Salonga but she's only known by fans of Broadway. Singers like Ramiele Malubay have no chance because the powers that be do not want Asian faces in the limelight.

Last month my asawa and I saw Mike Sandejas' film "Dinig Sana Kita" at the Cleveland International Film Festival. Friends, this film, if given the proper exposure, could seriously garner votes for best international film for Golden Globes and Oscars..

There are countless examples.. I am angered that Carolla, like most Americans, knows nothing of America's foreign policy history. The asshole doesn't know that the U.S. supported the Marcoses. Before that, the living standard was better for Filipinos.

Meanwhile, capitalist "democracies" are known to elect people who are not qualified.. here in the U.S. we have actors and wrestlers for governors. Hell, Ronald Reagan was an actor.. an awful one.

The Philippines is not the only place with a sex industry. This is a bi-product of capitalism and everyone knows the U.S. military was a major customer.

I should not imply that it's totally essential that Filipinos be popular in the west.. but there is an undeniable connection. Of course pinoys should focus on domestic concerns.

Adam has a point, but the delivery is off and lacking some humor.

The overreaction of many Filipinos makes the situation worse. It reveals to everybody out there that Filipinos are easy to troll.

Just take a look at Adam's Facebook page. Such overreactions. In my short time browsing there, I found death threats hurled at Adam in both English and Tagalog.

@Dave
I have to disagree with you on Filipino singers. We have great copycats or cover singers like Arnel Pineda and Charice Pempengco. It's too bad we need more artists with originality and identities.
#4.1 Dave in Ohio on 2010-04-09 11:15 (Reply)
Yeah, there are copycats, but that's more to do with record companies or producers. Singers like Nina are quite adaptable. You've got a metal scene, great reggae bands, jazz, folk.. I like the older OPM tunes myself.
#5 Charles Townsend on 2010-04-07 02:55 (Reply)
Ang kulang lang sa mga Pinoy ay pagkakaisa at pagmamahal sa bayan kaya patuloy pa rin tayo naghihirap.
