Manny Pangilinan quits Ateneo over graduation speech flap, but Chris Tiu doesn’t know how to quit him

Boy, it was a busy Easter weekend for news, wasn’t it? Heathens who didn’t take the time to reflect for their sins (or who couldn’t book a trip to Boracay) and were stuck on Facebook all weekend have heard the flap over Manny Pangilinan’s commencement speeches. Pangilinan was actually invited to speak at two graduation ceremonies for the Ateneo de Manila University, one for the School of Science & Engineering and the School of Management, and another for the School of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The PLDT chairman’s address at the second occasion drew controversy after analyses on Facebook showed that the several lines were lifted from commencement speeches by personalities such as Oprah Winfrey, JK Rowling, and Barack Obama. (The speech from the first occasion stole a joke from Conan O’Brien’s famous Harvard address – still the funniest commencement speech of all time.)

Amid the furor, the Ateneo website took down the controversial speech, and a few hours later, published an exchange between Pangilinan and Ateneo president Fr. Bienvenido Niebres. Pangilinan, who chairs the university’s board of trustees, took full responsibility for the issue and called it “a deep source of personal embarrassment,” before offering his resignation from Ateneo. Niebres, in his reply, refused to accept Pangilinan’s resignation immediately, preferring to take it up first with the university’s officials and other board members.

Apart from his job as one of the country’s most successful managers and his involvement with Ateneo, Pangilinan is also an avid sportsman. He chairs the SBP, the country’s national basketball federation, and his companies bankroll the men’s senior national team Smart Gilas, and the varsity teams of Ateneo and San Beda, the schools that he attended.

It should perhaps come as no surprise that Pangilinan enjoys the support of Chris Tiu, the team captain of Smart Gilas and a former UAAP superstar who played for Ateneo’s 2008 championship squad. In a lengthy blog post, Tiu defends Pangilinan in his usual articulate manner, and says that the incident happened because, well, MVP is a great man:

From accepting and making two separate speeches despite all the circumstances, it is clear that MVP wanted to impart his wisdom to the graduates in order to ENCOURAGE and to INSPIRE them to succeed in life. That alone tells us the kind of man that he is. He could have taken the easy way out and simply declined. It was indeed a mistake to fail to cite and give proper reference to JK Rowling and Oprah but his intention was not for people to praise him as a great speaker by borrowing those lines, but rather he wanted to extract their creative minds by supplementing those words with his personal experiences.

Along the way, Tiu compares Pangilinan’s situation to Tiger Woods, and expresses his wish, as an Ateneo alumnus, for MVP to stay connected with the university, because “MVP is truly a leader we should admire because of his love for the Filipino people, his exceptionally generous heart and his incredible courage!”

UPDATE: Inquirer had an interesting editorial this morning about the issue. Ahem.

UPDATE 2 (4/7/10): I really, really, really enjoyed Conrado de Quiros’ take on the matter in his column this morning. By the way, he is a proud Atenean, even though he admits most people assume that he is from UP. “I don’t know which is worse, being caught plagiarizing or being caught plagiarizing Oprah.” Awesome.

Holy crap, Greg Slaughter really is transferring to Ateneo
So the rumors are true: Greg Slaughter, the 6’11” star center of the University of Visayas Green Lancers, is now redshirting for the Ateneo Blue Eagles to be eligible for the 2011 UAAP basketball tournament, Quinito Henson reports in his Philippine Star c

students who have been proven to have plagiarized get kicked out. i remember a graduate student of UP with a doctorate degree whose title and diploma got revoked years after when it was found out he had plagiarized a paper.

now, just because pangilinan is a big donor of his school, authorities want to gloss over his error, with fr nebres even suggesting that his apology and admission command our respect. will students of ateneo get the same leniency if ever they commit the same mistake?

no amount of spin or opinion from popular ateneo products like cris tiu can take away the fact that mvp plagiarized. he was invited to inspire the students with his own words and experience (of course, the millions he has donated was probably the main reason, but that's another story). if he had to use the words of rowling or obama or oprah, how hard could it be to cite them as proper sources? he wanted to inspire the graduates with words of other people?...tell them to use google.

and let's make one thing clear...mvp manned up (pun not intended) and apologized not because he was sorry for his stupid mistake, but because he got found out. nabuking, in the vernacular.

ateneans were so cruel to lasalle because of the alsal mistake. now, all you hear from them is everyone makes mistakes, let's move on. i just hope their apologies are original and not plagiarized.

blame it on the ghostwriter. And it's not like Ateneo could 'penalize' him for the mistake, the guy tried to resign for chris' sake. What do you suggest, that they revoke his degree too? lol
#2 avril on 2010-04-05 19:41 (Reply)
come on, chris tiu. not because he donates big to your school doesn't mean you can excuse him from his mistakes.
first, even in high school, plagiarism is a serious offense! students get expelled for such actions. there is no excuse for what Pangilinan did. second, obviously Pangilinan do not write his speeches himself. it was more foolish for chris tiu to defend him. lastly, Ateneo should not have stopped Pangilinan in his resignation. it just proves the kind of education ateneo tolerates. I may come from a public college but I know the difference between what is proper and improper.

Spin machine? Of all the news articles I've read about the issue, there was no use of the term "plagiarized". Instead, they refer to the lines as being "borrowed". He even says in the first part, "let me earn my honorary degree, and turn thoughtful and traditional."
#4 Sir Vinnie on 2010-04-05 21:23 (Reply)
philippine star has already killed the story, and so has other mvp-controlled media outlets. sadness! their spin and pr machines are working overtime to absolve mvp.

lol while the mvp manned up, his underlings did not. which led me to an idea: was that only for PR purposes?

oh yeah, the right hand does not know what the left hand was doing. lol

Katulad rin iyan ni Gloria nung nabuking siya sa Hello Garci scandal. Sinabi niya sa tao," I am sorry. It was a lapse of judgement on my part" pero di siya nagbitiw sa pagiging Pangulo ng Pilipinas. Para rin iyan sinabi mong the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing. Mas masahol pa nga dahil pandaraya sa eleksyon ang nangyari at hindi lang paghiram ng mga quotes sa graduation speech.lol

MVP should have hired a talented speech writer if he intends to speak in a graduation rites at Ateneo in the future.
#7 Sindy Cahill on 2010-04-06 00:58 (Reply)
On the other hand,if MVP did this for PR purposes,he should do something for his alma mater that he is comfortable with and not something that he is unfamiliar with like giving a speech.

When Stanford Medical Center helped Apple Chairman Steve Jobs to get cured of cancer, he donated $5 million to the hospital and gave a speech to Stanford University commencement exercises back in 2005 - which was not something new to him considering that he is used to talking to big crowds.

how do you know he's unfamiliar with giving speeches and is uncomfortable in doing so? mvp gives a lot of speeches, in gatherings whether bigger or smaller to that of a graduation, and in places and with audiences both local and foreign. his comfort level in giving speeches is a non-factor here. pointing to it as a culprit in this plagiarizing issue sounds like an apologist's way to mitigate what he had done.
#8 jin on 2010-04-06 07:09 (Reply)
With all his commitments he probably did not write the speech. It is naive for people to think that he actually sat down in front of a computer and typed out his speech. Unfortunately you leave the speech to the "true" writer and you are at his mercy. Am sure whoever that was is now long gone from his job.

your article mr firequinito doesnt make sense!

gosh! you wasted my fucking time reading this bullshit!

you should not have wasted even your time for this! there are alot of sports stories around. concentrate in a more interesting stories like the defeats of smart gilas in their serbian tour, why it happen, what were their shortcomings, the effect of the dwayne jones nt signing for our national team. stuff like that.

be responsible to your reader! not just write for the sake of writing!

hope you take this constructively! nothing personal man. peace!

I hate to say this but it is truly "normal" for spin machines to work overtime to cleanse popular celebrities who make mistakes or create a scandal and restore their former image to the public.

That was the case when Magic Johnson was discovered to have been infected with an HIV virus back in 1991. The media have beaten him black and blue but later on their spin machine did their best to restore Magic's former image to the people particularly his fans. The NBA did it by allowing him to play in the 1992 All-Star Game and the players did their best to allow him to win the All Star MVP. Then, he was also allowed to join the 1992 Dream Team that competed at the Barcelona Olympics and was made team captain together with Larry Bird and Michael Jordan to again make him look good to the in the eyes of the people.

The same was true when Kobe Bryant was involved in criminal case when he was sued for rape by Katelyn Faber at Denver,Colorado back in 2004. Kobe was demolished by the media. But their spin machine did their best to restore his image to the public. First of all, when Faber dropped the case, a lot of stories came out that she just intended to seek money and the story of Kobe being guilty was practically killed. Also, Vanessa Bryant, who seemed to be a private person, attended a lot of events together with Kobe to show that their marriage is as strong as ever.It included a feature when the media featured the 4 karat diamond ring that Kobe gave to her. Their spin media worked overtime to restore Kobe's former image to the public.

Expect the same thing to happen to Tiger Woods in the few days and months to come after the scandals that came out about having multiple affairs. Now, it is in the headlines that Tiger has already admitted the mistakes he has committed to her wife and apologize to his fans. It is now their spin machines working overtime to restore his former good image to the public.

So in MVP's case, it is just expected that their spin machines will do the same to make him and Ateneo look good to the public. What Chris Tiu is doing is probably part of it. Newspapers under their control have already killed the story.More things are to come from their media outlets to restore his good image once again to the public.

MVP probably delivers hundreds of speeches every year. If his ghostwriting staff was stupid enough to lift content from famous American commencement speeches for his Ateneo speech, chances are they also lifted liberally from other less famous sources for 99.9% of his speeches.

The other disturbing thing about his ghost staff lifting passages is that very likely the staff did not put in original thought into the speech but instead placed entertainment over content. Every successful person remembers times in his/her life where, staring into some abyss like life after graduation or after the failure of a business, he asked 'meaning of life' questions that led him to where he is today. That his staff couldn't be bothered to ask him what those questions were when he graduated college makes us wonder what parts of his truly reflected who MVP was and is.

Graduation speeches should be entertaining and inspiring because no one wants to hear a boring uninspiring speech at the climax of 4,5,6 years of college. On the other hand, graduation speeches should be rooted in reality because what the graduate faces in the days ahead is very very real. What parts of his speech are real is now in doubt because of his staff writers' kleptomania. For that, he really should think about revamping his staff because his staff is doing him and the Ateneo community a disservice.
