Absolute Madness

Whenever I take the MRT home from work, I usually end up thinking of topics for this blog. Tonight, my mind was on the ongoing NCAA tournament, because the bracket I filled up a couple of weeks ago was doing surprisingly, ridiculously well; I had picked three of the Final Four teams correctly, and I probably would’ve gotten it perfect if Kansas hadn’t lost to Northern fucking Iowa. As it is, my pick to win it all, West Virginia, is still alive and just may go all the way.

Anyway, on my commute, I realized that I’ve been watching the March Madness tournament every year since 1996 – Star Sports started broadcasting all the games from CBS then – and I could probably name all the tournament champions since that year. It took a while, but by the time I got off at Pasong Tamo Extension, I could rattle the list off: 96 Kentucky, 97 Arizona, 98 Kentucky, 99 UConn, 00 Michigan State, 01 Duke, 02 Maryland, 03 Syracuse, 04 UConn, 05 North Carolina, 06 Florida, 07 Florida, 08 Kansas, 09 North Carolina. I could even tell you some of the guys on each team.

All of that only means one thing: I’m a nerd.

I also realized how much I’ve been wrong about a lot of college players over the years. Seriously, here are the things I’ve been wrong about:

  • I thought Marcus Camby was better than Tim Duncan, after Camby’s UMass played the Kentucky Wildcats better than Duncan’s Wake Forest. Turns out the legendary Travieso/Padilla backcourt had a lot to do with that too.

  • I actually believed Rick Pitino was going to lead the Celtics back to glory. So much for the Rick-tator.

  • I was sure Miles Simon was going to be an elite NBA guard. I still don’t know how this didn’t happen.

  • I thought Ron Mercer was going to at least be an all-star.

  • I thought Khalid El-Amin was going to make it.

  • I knew Mateen Cleaves… actually, I always knew he would suck.

  • I figured undersized shooting guard Gilbert Arenas wouldn’t make it in the NBA because he was such a chucker, but his teammate Loren Woods would at least be a serviceable part-time starting big man. Wrong on both counts.

  • I thought Jared Jeffries would be a borderline all-star.

  • I was sure Gerry McNamara could at least help an NBA team as a Steve Kerr-type shooter off the bench. Nope.

  • I thought Okafor was going to be great, certainly better than Dwight Howard.

  • I was sure Channing Frye was going to be just another Loren Woods, but he actually stuck. But at least I knew Sean May was gonna stink. Marvin Williams too.

  • I bought the Adam Morrison hype. He was really fun to watch in college. It was even more fun to watch him cry.

  • I thought Kevin Durant was overrated.

  • I loved Derrick Rose, but I thought Chris Douglas-Roberts would make it too. There’s still time, I think.

  • I thought Psycho-T was going to be a beast.

Speaking of NCAA brackets, my coniotic friends are all over this. I mean, they go on asking me, someone who is unable to watch US NCAA games, who's on my Final Four bracket.

Of course, my ignorant answer would be 'Err, Baste, Letran, JRU, and San Beda'?
#1.1 jaemark on 2010-03-29 23:26 (Reply)
Hehe, good answer.

The games are on BTV, and CBS/NCAA has this really great, legal live stream site that allows you to watch all the games. I caught a fair number of games because I'm an insomniac.

"I thought Kevin Durant was overrated."

I consider Kevin Durant now to be the third best player in the NBA behind LeBron James and Kobe Bryant. He might even be better than Kobe in a few years. No question about it.
#2.1 jaemark on 2010-03-30 00:41 (Reply)
he's better than kobe *now*

yeah i said it.
#2.1.1 Sindy Cahill on 2010-03-30 04:30 (Reply)
The only aspect that is lacking in Kevin Durant's game is passing. If he becomes a better passer, then I could say the has already surpassed Kobe Bryant. But Durant has a lot of time. He is only 21 years old while Kobe Bryant is 31 years old and getting older.LOL

Durant will definitely be better than Kobe considering that he is Oklahama Thunder's only main man unlike the LA Lakers' superstar who has Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom, Ron Artest and Derek Fisher to support him.

In the future, LeBron and Durant will be competing for the "best player of the NBA" title.

@firequinito, nothing about al horford and the other gators?

DWade is belongs to the top five among NBA players. He also has a complete game in both offense and defense. The only thing that is not working for him is that he is injury prone. But he definitely was a great college player at Marquette U.

i actually liked the noah and horford front court. i was right about them. still can't believe noah dropped all the way in the draft.
#2.1.2.3.1 SYD on 2010-03-31 20:59 (Reply)
i saw that coming. noah is helpful but his post scoring is questionable.

tyler hansborough had a better college career and he wasn't drafted high.
#2.1.3 Sindy Cahill on 2010-03-30 13:37 (Reply)
Another thing going for Kevin Durant is his maturity as a player and as a person at age 21.

Kobe Bryant was far from being mature when he was 21 considering his fued with Shaq and Coach Phil Jackson. This continued in his mid-20's.Later on in his late 20's, he did have a feud with the LA Lakers teamowner, Dr Jerry Buss and Lakers GM Mitch Kupchack. Now at age 31,he has a fued with Pau Gasol. But one good thing about Kobe is that he is taking his feud with Gasol with maturity for the LA Lakers to win a back-to-back NBA title.LOL

The only bad thing about Durant is that the NBA sportswriters does not put him on the spotlight very often unlike King James and Kobe despite of his breakthrough season this year when he is averaging 29.7 points per game,7.5 rebounds per game,2.7 assists per game,1.3 steals per game,1.3 steals per game and 1.0 blocks per game. That is better than Kobe's 27.4 points per game, 5.4 rebounds per game, 5.1 assists per game, 1.6 steals per game and 0.3 blocks per game. Besides, Durant is doing it a younger age compared that to Kobe.

If Durant can improve on his assists average of 2.7 assists per game (Kobe has 5.4 assists per game), then he has already surpassed Kobe. I believe that at age 21, there is no reason that he cannot do that.

As for winning NBA championships, if the Oklahoma City Thunder can surround him with great role players, there is no reason that he can at least win one.

"I bought the Adam Morrison hype. He was really fun to watch in college. It was even more fun to watch him cry."

Adam Morrison is one of the biggest bust in NBA history. Expectations were very high before he played in the pros. He was college star that was expected to make waves. But look at him now. He is a bench warmer. He cannot find a way to become even a role player. He is an inconsistent scorer and a very big liability on defense. Aside from that, he lack athleticism. His NBA stats says it all: 2.4 points per game, 1.2 rebounds per game and 0.6 assists per game and seeing action for only 7.6 minutes per game. The only good thing about him is that he already has won an NBA championship with the LA Lakers last year.LOL
#4 Sindy Cahill on 2010-03-30 04:50 (Reply)
"I thought Okafor was going to be great, certainly better than Dwight Howard."

Emeka Okafor is an undersized center at 6'10" when he was dominant for UConn in the NCAA. Even Elton Brand, who played center for Duke, become a dominant center at 6'9" .Reserve your judgments next time for dominant centers below 6'10" when they go to the pros. They are least likely to do the same in the NBA.
#5 Sindy Cahill on 2010-03-30 04:54 (Reply)
"I actually believed Rick Pitino was going to lead the Celtics back to glory. So much for the Rick-tator."

Rarely does a great college coach become a successful NBA coach. College coaches will have difficulty dealing with NBA superstars most of the time. But of course, there will be exceptions.LOL
#6 Sindy Cahill on 2010-03-30 04:58 (Reply)
Jaemark,

What about JJ Redick,a former college star of Duke, who is now with the Orlando Magic? Is he a bust or not?

"I loved Derrick Rose, but I thought Chris Douglas-Roberts would make it too. There’s still time, I think."

Derrick Rose is already a certified NBA superstar. No question about it.

As for Chris Douglas-Roberts,I think that being with the New Jersey Nets, the worst team in the NBA, has affected his growth and probably his confidence as a player in the pros. The same is true with fellow Nets player, Yi Jianlian, another Chinese player who I expected to be an NBA superstar just like his compatriot, Yao Ming.

Sir Jaemark,

Loved this post, I have been waiting for you to do a piece on March madness. I'm also into March madness, hell I'm very passionate about the US NCAA. I'm a Tar Heel fan for life. I agree with you about Sean May being a bust while the jury is still out for Marvin Williams (My Tar heel bias working here, Hehehe) and of course even for Psycho T (for Christ sake he is still a rookie). I also thought Khalid El-Amin would make it, he was a beast against Dook in that 99 NCAA finale.

I really do hope West Virginia (Country Road take me home) would make it this year. I don't want Dook Blue Devils to take it after my Beloved tar heels didn't even make the tournament.

honestly, i think high-level american female players are more fundamentally sound than philippine pros, and are a lot more crisp when it comes to running their offensive and defensive sets. some women are ridiculously good shooters. a few years ago at a college 3 point shootout, a female player beat current nba star aaron brooks in the finals. athletically, men are (usually) superior to women though and i dunno if female bigs can bang with guys like rabeh and slaughter or if female guards can stay in front of quick filipino guards or beat them off the dribble.
ive played pickup ball with d1 ncaa basketball players when i was in college, and im by no means an elite baller, but they would beat me and my buddies (some of whom could probably play in college leagues in manila if they were filipino) routinely.
#10 Sindy Cahill on 2010-03-30 13:51 (Reply)
Joakim Noah and Al Horford of the FSU Gators are doing well for Chicago Bulls and Atlanta Hawks respectively.

Noah is one of the best rebounders in the NBA while Horford will on the right track on becoming a future NBA superstar as a 20-10 (20 points per game and 10 rebounds per game) player.

#10.2 poopoo on 2010-04-01 01:07 (Reply)
actually, horford and noah played for the UF(university of florida) gators, not the fsu seminoles.
noah's offensive skills are dubious, and i doubt horford will ever be a 20-10 guy like youre predicting, but their rebounding is ace and they are both defensive anchors ALREADY at this point in their careers. horford especially is probably the most important piece in atlanta's tough zone defense.
#10.2.1 Sindy Cahill on 2010-04-01 15:01 (Reply)
Al Horford is currently averaging 14.3 points per game and 9.70 rebounds per game on his third season in the NBA.

He is constantly improving every year with his scoring average from 10.1 points per game in his rookie year, 11. 5 points in his second year in the NBA and now 14.3 points per game. I believe that he has the talent to average at least 20 points per game later in his career.

With regards to his rebounding, he averaged 9.7 rebounds per game in his rookie year, 9.3 rebounds per game in his second year and 9.7 rebounds per game at present. I think he has the ability to average more than 10 or 11 rebounds later in his career.
#10.2.2 Sindy Cahill on 2010-04-01 15:10 (Reply)
With regards to Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls, he is a rebounding monster by grabbing 10.7 rebounds a game inspite of his limited offensive skills. But still, he is scoring in double figures at 10.3 points per game. Not bad at all. Most of the points that he score are on follow ups and being open in the shaded area.
#10.2.3 Sindy Cahill on 2010-04-01 15:45 (Reply)
One thing going for Al Horford is that if David Lee,also from Florida Gators, of the New York Knicks became a 20/10 player in the NBA (20.0 points per game and 11.8 rebounds per game this season), how can he not be one? I consider Horford to be a better player than Lee!!!
#10.2.3.1 poopoo on 2010-04-01 23:16 (Reply)
as a longtime league pass subscriber and avid knicks fan, ive seen plenty of both players, and i can determinately conclude that lee is a much better offensive player than horford(and it's not just knick bias). he has a very accurate outside shot (thanks to knicks shooting coach allan houston), can put the ball on the floor and finish strong, is an excellent passer (and not just for a big) and is a strong finisher. he's not exactly a traditional center, but dantoni's offensive sets dont really need a low post player. horford does have a decent j(though he's a catch and shoot guy and isnt accurate off the dribble like lee is) and is solid in the post for an undersized 5, but lee is definitely head and shoulders above horford offensively.
lee is also a better rebounder. watch the games or like you seem to like to do, analyze the stats, and you'll see that lee gobbles up boards better than horford.
horford is much better defensively though, which is pretty important in a big these days, especially with the relaxed zone defense rules. lee is frustrating to watch on defense because he's often caught watching the ball and letting his man slip by, is slow on help defense, doesnt get blocks, gets dominated by bigger centers one-on-0one etc etc(i could go on and on), and i do wish he more savvy defensively(although poor team defense isnt all lee's fault:it's the knicks lack of commitment to their defense), but you cant really say that horford is a better player overall.
horford is definitely the better college player, but in the pros, it's really a tossup between the two, depending on what you value more in your bigs: defense and a low post presence or flexibility on offense (obviously dantoni would prefer a guy like lee on his team while woodson would prefer someone like horford on his hawks).
about averaging a 20-10, i really doubt it. even guys like dirk, one time mvp ,and pau gasol , who is undoubtedly a better player than horford, have never averaged 20-10, even during the latter's days as the hombre back on the grizzlies. im pretty sure jamison averaged a 20-10 on the wiz a few years back though, and he's not as good as the players i mentioned either, but that's the exception and not the rule. horford can put big numbers up in games every now and then, but i dont think he'll ever average that much in an entire season. his offense just isnt good enough. i could be wrong though, and feel free to laugh at me if that ever happens

PS.i cant believe i typed all that. i dont usually argue on the internet, you can never change anyone's mind anyway. but i just had to get my 2 cents in. peace

"feel free to laugh at me if that ever happens"

I am not a blogger who laughs at other people's post. I am a lot better than that. That is only for immature bloggers with narcissistic attitude when posting their thoughts and ideas.Again, I appreciate your thoughts about David Lee.

With regards to Al Horford, I think this guy has the potential to be a 20/10 player. It may or may not happen. A lot depends on his development as a player. Only the future will tell.

With regards to David Lee, I think that another thing that is working for him is his ambidexterity. He can shoot both left and right. Also, he is a certified All Star. Too bad that he was not selected to the team and he only had to replace Allen Iverson. He definitely is the Most Improved Player of NBA this year.
#10.2.3.1.3 Siopao Asado on 2010-04-19 11:07 (Reply)
Admit it or not, you are just a New York Knicks fan. Al Horford has the potential to be a 20-10 player. The Atlanta Hawks is in the NBA playoffs while the Knicks are out of it. I doubt if LeBron James will transfer there especially if the Cavs will win the championship this year.

It is Butler College vs Duke University in the NCAA Championship for Men's Basketball.
David vs Goliath. The Duke Blue Devils is the overwhelming favorite to win the match considering that it has a more talented team and an experienced coach in Mike Krzyzewski, owner of three NCAA championships, but I would like the Butler Bulldogs to win to complete their unexpected finish in this year's NCAA Tournament.

What is also admirable to the Bulldogs is that they are humble.

I hope that Gordon Hayward and Coach Brad Stevens of the Bulldogs win it all next year.

Joakim Noah should keep his mout shut!!!! First he cursed LeBron James for dancing when the Chicago Bulls played the Cleveland Cavaliers back in December 2009. Then now, he called out Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics and called him "a dirty player". He should realize that winning NCAA championships twice as a member of the Florida Gators do not mean a thing in the NBA.
