Jaemark, in 2005, I had the privilege of being part of the RP team delegation to the William Jones Cup tournament in Taipei. Kirin was the main sponsor of the Japanese national team at that time. I've never imagined that they would someday acquire majority stocks in SMB
that's very interesting that they're also involved in sports in Japan. it means that if (still a big IF) they do get control of the Brewery, they might want to take control of the Beermen.
THis is not all surprising. The Boss is sick and there's so much happening as a result ! Seems like , tectonic plates are moving similar to what's shaking mother earth lately...expect more shake up at SMB...
The question is: what is at stake? the regional bess business operation or the domestic?
these 2 are entirely different.

nope, it's not different at all. San Miguel Brewery owns both the local operation and the regional operations (except for Hong Kong, which it controls but does not fully own).
the Brewery was spun off as a separate company a couple of years ago specifically so that Kirin could become an investor in the whole operation.

still, even if SMBrewery owns both the domestic and the regional operations, the thing is, they are separate and distinct entities. different board of directors, different shareholding base, different management committe, different personality altogeher.
the domestic is registered with the Philippine SEC and DTI, holding a local business name.
while the regional is registered as something else.

all the foreign ventures -- Southeast Asia, China -- are OWNED by San Miguel Breweries, the one registered in the Philippines. SMB controls these directly. Kirin would be interested in the mother company, which would include local operations.
besides, even if it doesn't have the same growth potential, the local beer business is still the cash cow of San Miguel Brewery, so Kirin would probably want a piece of that.

pushy ba? hehe sorry.
pero going back to the bloomberg report, Kirin kasi is looking for 2 things, basically:
1. growth potential - which they can get from the regional operations in SE Asia
2. improvement of profitability - which they can get from San Miguel's local operation.
peace!
