Welcome the Derby Ace Llamados (?) and other Purefoods-Alaska matters

James Yap is the king of the PBA

The buzz is that after winning the Philippine Cup championship, Purefoods will be changing its name to promote the company’s B-Meg line of animal feeds. An NBN Sports report said that the new name will be the ‘Derby Ace Llamados’ after B-Meg’s gamefowl feeds brand. I don’t mind the Derby Ace name, but do they really have to pander so shamefully to the lo-diyes crowd with the Llamados nickname? Why not the Derby Ace Slashers, which is way cooler?

Then again, the team is already currently nicknamed the ‘Tender Juicy Giants’ which has to be one of the most awful (and frankly, kinda gay) nicknames in the history of basketball, so rooting for the Llamados wouldn’t be so bad, right? Also it could’ve been worse, as the team could’ve been named after hog pellets or tilapia feeds. Or chick boosters.

Still, part of me thinks that this is San Miguel Corporation management’s punishment for Purefoods for kicking San Miguel’s ass in the semifinals.

Anyway, a lot of interesting stuff around the Internet after Purefoods’ masterful victory over the Alaska Aces last night.

  • You should all start checking out IV Point Play, an impressive new Pinoy sports blog by Polo Bustamante and Carlo Araneta. The guys also produce a pretty entertaining podcast called ‘From the Stands’ (episode 4 was particularly good). Both guys behind the blog are Alaska fans, so I enjoyed their analysis of how Purefoods won: “So the Purefoods TJ Giants are kings of the Philippine Basketball world, and they totally deserve it, while Alaska, for the second straight year, is left searching for what prevents them from taking the next step forward. Funny how the more things change, the more they stay the same.”

  • Jude Turcuato attended the game live last night, and raved about the King of the PBA, James Yap: “A smooth operator, he doesn't get too excited or too down. He is like a well oiled machine built to play on the court and get the job done. He is the best offensive player in the PBA right now and it seems his defense is catching up as well. You can tell that although he doesn’t talk much, his teammates rely on him to lead them and James embraces the responsibility. James is a player who has the fans holding their breath in anticipation whenever he has the ball. Very few have that ability.”

There’s also this interesting note on Jude’s discussion with Coach Ryan before the team drafted Yap in 2004: “When Coach Ryan told me that James is the best player in the draft, I thought he was in one of his hyperbolic raves again. I worked with him in the UAAP panel and a little in the PBA and he did have a tendency to get over excited about basketball, which I think is great.”

  • The last several games of Purefoods are available on Bit Torrent at IP Mart. You can download using the using these credentials – username: tjgiants2010/password: tjgiants. As always, with these things, kindly seed.

  • Finally, Ginebra fans taking on Alaska with a little help from the April Boys:

I have been a Purefoods fan since 1988. It's kinda hard to swallow I'll be rooting for Derby Ace Llamados!

It kinda betrays a lot of Purefoods fan specially they do have a lot of followers. Though the coaching staff and the players will be the same, it's still doesn't feel the same way!

When team trade their franchise players, the fans didn't switch teams to support, they live and die with the team. I don't know if this goes the same of name changing!
#1.1 jaemark on 2010-03-04 20:18 (Reply)
it's not a big deal, and i doubt it's permanent. it'll probably be similar to the Coney Island deal back in the '90s.
#1.1.1 jameslou on 2010-03-04 20:30 (Reply)
I've got some dire feeling previously when they changed their name to Coney Island. Same feeling I am having now.

Guess it may take some time to get used to it!
#1.1.2 Joey_Escalera on 2010-03-07 12:25 (Reply)
That's correct. Probably the team will go back to Purefoods after a conference or two.

Hahahahaha! Can't stop laughi... Wait, here it comes again... Hahahahaha. Talented guy. =)

hehehehe. also loved his old school Ginebra jersey.
#3 maeve on 2010-03-04 20:26 (Reply)
this happened to SMB last season, from SMB to Magnolia. hope this will be temporary. thanks for the torrent link.. =)
#3.1 jaemark on 2010-03-04 20:29 (Reply)
exactly. Purefoods is the flagship brand of the San Miguel Purefoods Company, so it's hard to imagine them going away from that permanently.
#4 renchantan on 2010-03-04 20:43 (Reply)
Sultada na! Haha! PF, I mean derby ace llamados can have their own version of Chris "The Birdman" Andersen... Hahaha! Maybe Marc Pingris??? Haha!
#5 John Copada brigade on 2010-03-04 20:45 (Reply)
The PBA clubs should refrain from changing Team names..to change monicker its okay but to change Purefoods with a new product they want to introduce to the market is a bit too commercialized although this was done before and its been going on for quite sometime..they better stop now ,the PBA is still struggling to regain its lost glory ,changes in the team logo just won't help now..this is not the golden years where fans can easily accept and at the rate players are being traded in a manner as quick as the click of a camera a lot of fans will be alienated and will be disgusted ..there's just too much commecialization ,although there is no such thing as team loyalty now .changing club name every season is a bit too much.
#6 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-03-04 21:23 (Reply)
arguably it could be the worst team name in franchise history. worse than purefoods oodles and carne norte cowboys.

and james rightfully asserted that it betrays the fan base that they have built in 22 years, which are composed mainly of children, young adults, grade school/high school/college girls.

and these fans are not necessarily cockfighting fans.

that brand name is not in anyway wholesome and appealing to its original and loyal fan base.

this decision will leave a bad taste in the mouth. some, if not many fans, will be turned off. and i am one of them.

from the marketing and business standpoint, this is not going to be a wise decision. it will be a PR disaster.

Purefoods, as a brand and as a PBA team, has a rich heritage. crass commercialism may betray it.

but anyway, i am just a fan.
#6.1 jaemark on 2010-03-04 21:26 (Reply)
great, great point.

i guess that's the best argument against the Derby Ace name... unlike Coney Island, it's not a product that appeals to kids.

you're right, the franchise have done so much to cultivate that wholesome, kid-friendly image, pati sa pagkuha ng muses. the Derby Ace product doesn't really fit into that.

jaemark,

#6.1.1.1 jaemark on 2010-03-04 21:44 (Reply)
#6.1.1.1.1 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-03-04 22:38 (Reply)
nakakatakot namang backcourt tandem sina roger yap at pacquiao. lol

#6.2 super_polgas on 2010-03-04 21:59 (Reply)
Agree with you on this sky. This brand is really not kid-friendly since we have been known to cater fans from all walks of life and age. We even have muses that attributes that. To that "goodbye carlo kid" to even the cute antoinette taus pa.

If ever this happens, it will be hard to swallow. Coney Island pwede pa kasi pang bata hanggang matanda ang ice cream. Pero ang pakain sa panabong na manok??? WTF!

Jaemark, if ever you go to coach RG's practice and meet him, PLEASE mention our plea to not to replace the name to this awful name. Ayus lang sana kung Monterey Beef Masters. Hehehehe..
#6.2.1 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-03-04 22:10 (Reply)

#6.2.1.1 super_polgas on 2010-03-04 22:23 (Reply)

#6.3 Joey_Escalera on 2010-03-07 13:53 (Reply)
You are right about the brand name. But just like what jaemark said, it could only be temporary. Besides, Purefoods has had a rich tradition in the PBA for 22 years now.
With regards to commercialism, is not what the PBA is all about? To advertise products of the company. I just hope that the Purefoods name would come back soon.
#7 gascan on 2010-03-04 21:30 (Reply)
@1:40.... natatawa sa kalokohan niya.... LOL
#8 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-03-04 22:33 (Reply)

makes sense d b?

naiirita talaga ako!

i am so bothered!
#8.1 super_polgas on 2010-03-04 22:51 (Reply)
ahaha. relax lang sky. just use the power of the "law of attraction"

Chant this guys, "Purefoods will retain its name"

DO that a hundred times in a day. :D

ang pag aalaga ng baboy at manok, for all ages. lol

question 1: would it be too late to start a signature campaign against the plan of SMC to rename purefoods into derby ace llamados( sheesh, llamados? does danding think of purefoods like a bunch of street chicanos? and who would be the mascot? zorro?)

question 2: is the video a tribute to purefoods sweeping alaska, or is it a video of a bitter ginebra fan (for getting swept by the aces). i cant remember alaska being "mayabang" after sweeping ginebra
#10.1 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-03-05 21:51 (Reply)
on no. 1: i think it is too late. unless there is a last-minute change of heart from the smc top brass.

boss danding may not have a hand of this since he is still ill. that should be the last thing on his mind.
#10.1.1 enigmasterpiece on 2010-03-05 23:33 (Reply)
i agree on you, danding might not be behind this since he is still sick. too bad for us, signature campaign is too late and "santino", who might use his connections with "bro" is already off the air, there is no hope for us

‘Derby Ace Llamados’

dapat sana palitan yung Llamados masyadong down to earth monicker ng PF haha dapat ASTIG yung ipalit hindi nagmamakaawa.

di ba?????

i don't want purefoods franchise to be change to "derby ace name"
that's so irritating to hear.

duhhh. so ewww!!!!!!! dont like it
so you better not to change it

- The Fiesta Conference has not started yet. Anyway, there is still hope in the new brand name of Purefoods. We have to wait till March 21st.

i work for san miguel, as much as i don't like purefoods changing its PBA name, i do understand the reason why it would change..let's just enjoy the game guys..:)

ok, fine. sabi mo eh.

lo-dies! lol
#15 dirk on 2010-03-12 15:45 (Reply)
bkit b nila pinalitan ang name?for commercials? that's the worst thing that san miguel corp have done. if they want they products to be known, let it be on the commercials itself not changing the name of purefoods giants. i hop the management has a better understanding of waht they are doing to their basketball team. im sure fans will not love it!!! im a die hard fan of purefoods. to the corporation of san miguel.. please dont let this thing happen before its too late. after winning the champiosnhip, eto pa ang igaganti niyo..nkakabwisit..wlang kwenta kayo kung mg isip..do the right thing guys!!
#16 Dave in Ohio on 2010-03-17 22:40 (Reply)
I am personally going to boycott all San Miguel-Purefoods products until they change the name.

OK, so I'm a vegetarian who hates coffee. I rarely buy their products as I am an animal lover who is against violence to chickens.

Anyway their tubs of purple ice cream cost $10 at our local Filipino store. Unless your name is Cojuangco who can afford $10 for ice cream?

Isn't Iloilo's Liga Pilipinas team call the Mang Inasals? If I had a team I'd name them the Adobo Kangkongs (tangkong for you Ilonggos.) I'd have a great team. I'd hire guys like Leo Bat-og and Woodrow Enriquez.
