Purefoods sweeps Alaska to win the 2010 Philippine Cup

Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio probably believes in it enough to mention that his team was playing on the 3rd day of the 3rd month of the year, and 33 was coincidentally the number of Eugene Tejada, the former Purefoods forward who was paralyzed in a freak accident during a game four years ago. The players had dedicated the rest of the conference to their fallen comrade, and they won the Philippine Cup championship that year too.

Ryan Gregorio is the man!

Three championships for Coach Ryan. Three years of reprieve from Fire Quinito.

In his post-game address to the frenzied Araneta Coliseum crowd, James Yap dedicated the game to his late mother-in-law, former President Corazon Aquino, his number one fan who never missed any of his games before she passed away last year. During the series, his teammates joined Yap in wearing yellow armbands to dedicate the rest of the games in her honor. Over the course of the next couple of months, the whole nation will be treated to a debate about the existence or the impact of ‘Cory magic’ in the political arena. Tonight, it would seem that the magic is alive and well at the Araneta Coliseum.

I am not a faithful man; I don’t know if I believe in destiny or magic. But I know I believe in basketball, and I believe that the best team gets to lift up the trophy at the end of the tournament.

Tonight, there’s no question about it: Purefoods is the best team in the land after taking game 4 over Alaska, 86-76, to sweep the 2010 PBA Philippine Cup best-of-7 finals.

Oh, the Aces came to play tonight. At least, their main men Willie Thriller and The Boss did. Alaska may not have looked great this evening – no team that gets swept 0-4 ever does – but this is a great, well-coached team that has been excellent all conference long. It was Purefoods that made them look awful.

There was Roger Yap, the floor general who didn’t shoot well in this series, but controlled the tempo of the games. He was masterful at taking the air out of the ball to make sure that Alaska never had the opportunity to get a few easy baskets in a faster game.

There was Kerby Raymundo, the on-again, off-again superstar, the operative word being superstar. While his performance may have been up-and-down, he was still a constant matchup nightmare for Alaska; the opposing defense ALWAYS had to worry about him, as if it didn’t have enough things to worry about.

There was the sampayan brigade of Marc Pingris, Rico Maierhofer, and Rafi Reavis. Sakuragi, in particular, was an absolute joy to watch; whenever some lazy curmudgeonly asshole sportswriter and/or blogger writes about how PBA players don’t play with any passion anymore unlike the UAAP or the bygone days of fucking Crispa and fucking Toyota, please send him clips of this guy. He rebounds like he’s still playing for ice tubig in the Pangasinan summer heat. He wrestles the big guys in the paint and harasses the guards out in the perimeter, sometimes all in the same sequence. My favorite was when he’d be guarding LA Tenorio and he’d get this look in his face like, “Putangina, sige, mag-penetrate ka, papalamunin kita ng bola.” It’s a testament to Tenorio that he didn’t pee his pants, but he stayed the hell out of the paint when Pingris was on him; his only good game in the series came when he was hitting his three-pointers.

There was the firestarter duo of KG Canaleta and Peter June Simon, neither of whom were born with a conscience. Both of them may be one-dimensional, but it’s a pretty awesome dimension.

There was the rest of the bench, led by Paul Artadi, cheering and clapping and jumping and chest-bumping around, annoying the fuck out of the other team’s fans.

Finally, there was James Yap, the MVP and the face of the franchise. Everyone knows about the killer spin moves and the booming three-pointers with a hand in his face, but only true fans know about the subtle nuances in his game. How he is so patient with the offense and how he is willing to defer, even when he could take his man one-on-one every possession. How he’s murder on the passing lanes when the team is playing zone, often getting steals or tipping the ball. How much he helps out on the boards, and how he never allows any offensive rebounds despite being assigned to a bigger guy. How he’s often the voice of reason on the floor when Kerby and Roger both get too aggressive on offense. How he’s far and away the most gifted offensive player on the floor, but he’s never an asshole about it, because he knows that at the end of the game he’ll be getting that ball and burying that fucking dagger.

Of course, the coaching staff led by Ryan Gregorio put it all together. They just hit all the right buttons in this series. The game plans, the substitutions, the timeouts, the play-calling, all of these were excellent. Ryan Gregorio, much-maligned not just by me but a lot of fellow Purefoods fans, was excellent.

The result on the court was beautiful. Purefoods executed its plays, disrupted the opponent’s offense with a headhunting press, recovered on defense, crashed the offensive boards, hit dagger shots, and battered Alaska from pillar to post. The awarding of the Philippine Cup at the end of the night seemed like mere formality; Purefoods looked every bit the champion long before the final buzzer sounded.

Some would call it destiny. Some would call it magic. I would call it damn great basketball.

nice nice item.. I like the 'angas' approach, i can feel ur happiness as a true-blooded fan Ü but, aside from coach ryan, give credit also to his deputies.. Coaches coy, ronnie, jorge, rey, dayong.. (hope i didnt forget someone). Great, great crew for Purefoods. And again, congrats for winning the championship!

For Jaemark:
"If Purefoods wins the championship, I will not only refrain from criticizing him for three whole calendar years, I will use this blog to fiercely defend his performance. He can march out of the dugout half-naked, take a piss at the scorer’s table, and call a walk-out for the team after the opening tip, and I’ll defend him here."

Paalala lang - 1091 days of not criticizing RG!!!!!

RG is the best coach of the PBA!!!!!!!!

What a way to win the Phil Cup. How sweep it is! I just hope no movement will be done on this team that would again boost the other SMC lineups. I'm so effing tired of that. How I wish we get out of this conglomerate and have our own identity in the league one more time. I loved the time when we used to dominate the All-Filipino Cup from 1988-1994 when we enter the finals like we are already expected to enter. How I loved the way Don Jaime jump in his seat and clenched his fist when Alvin swooshes or barrels his way to the basket.

Oh well, how "sweep" it is to win this Championship. :D

PS. I guess for most RG critics, there will be no more clamor for his resignation. I for instance also did wager for that. hehehehe

yeah, i feel that way too..

being a purefoods fan since 1990, when they were beaten by allan caidic's presto, I am very happy that PF once again won the championship while making history at the same time(5-time all-fili champ, winningest among active teams; 1st team to sweep all-fili finals, 3rd time in pba history) I hope it wouldnt end here, perhaps a back to back championship or grandslam might be good.

just a request: please, dont attribute PF's championship due to "cory magic", it is unfair to the coaches, the players(esp the sampayan brigade) and to everyone who contributed in putting PF where it is, also, being politically-inclined, I saw a lot of things in phil. govt and history to disprove such "magic"

just the same, I wonder how well this blog would do for 3 years, 1 of the reasons why I always check this blog is because of RG-bashing but it wouldnt happen even if RG called a walk-out from the opening tip, at least for 3 yrs
*but then again there's noli eala-bashing that we could look forward to

Sadly, I was rooting against Purefoods because I didn't want 3 years worth of toned down Jaemark. It makes for a funny story though. (Besides, I'm an Alaska fan)

But congratulations PF fans!

And much respect to Marc Pingris! Role players rock! I say put him on the National Team as a utility player!!!

Just a little bit respect for the elders.Crispa and Toyota they don't deserve that four plus three letter word they set the tone but i admit Pingris work ethic is one of a kind ,reminds me of a young Abe King and their hardworking import at that time the late Bruce "sky ' King. Congrats Purefoods for giving life to PBA after gInebra was swept by the very same team that Purefoods swept..its payback for them in a heartbreaking way.Coach RG and his amazing Giants had an incredible playoff run,one for the books.

oh no disrespect meant to the elders. profanity is not equal to disrespect.

my point was against people who always kill the game today and cite the so-called glory days.
#16.1.1 vinzanity on 2010-03-04 13:14 (Reply)
very true, kuya Jae.

ok lang naman mag-look back sa nakaraan, wag lang ma-compromise yung ngayon.. dahil karamihan sa hindi nakaka-appreciate ng PBA ngayon eh yung mga nabuhay [ung iba patay na] nung panahon na yun. they always compare, that they forget that basketball too is a cycle, and change is inevitable. they were the ones who always dwell on the past.. that's why they can't appreciate the present.. and can't see the future..

And a wonderful article, Fire Quinito. :)) It made my eyes kinda teary and made me love the team more. I love it! I also love your "pledge" not to criticize Coach RG for three years. :)) I'm one of those people who defends him no matter how much the other fans insult him kasi. So yun. I do hope that they'd stop now that he has won another Championship.

Great article again Jae!

I don't know if it's Ping that brought his PF team back on top, but certainly PF is well coached this conference.

Gone where the days when PF will go one on one! This conference, specially this Finals series, you can see the ball being distributed before they make a play.

Gone where the days the offense was stagnant when they will just watch Kerby makes his move and make a last minute pass to James Yap.

Gone where the days when PF Turn overs will average 20+ per game, number 1 at that department, and you can see Kerby and James Yap in the Top 5 Turn Over Department.

Gone where the days when PF would average a single digit assist per game, sign of they are not sharing the ball properly.

Gone where the days when you will find PF sa kangkungan!

This time, it's PF time!

Give credit to where it is due!

Tang-ina ang galing mo Coach RG!
Keep it up Coach, when you will find yourself in the hole again, look back at this series and remember what you did!
#29 carl on 2010-03-04 20:34 (Reply)
couldn't agree more on Pingris. loved his old school effort. he was the x factor in this series. he should have been finals MVP, yes Yap played extremely well but Pingris set the tone early. i bleed Ginebra red and i still remember what he did to Ginebra in last year's Fiesta Cup series. Alaska was mauled by the PF big men, Reavis and Raymundo should also get props for their efforts. i see Miller's tenure in Alaska coming to an end soon, he has always had that "dark cloud" hanging over his head when it comes to big games.lol

respect goes out to Uytengsu for admitting defeat, instead of whining about just about anything in relation to the series. a man's man in my book.
#30 emem on 2010-03-04 23:36 (Reply)
Congrats to PF! Hoping for a back to back to back Finals appearance! Very good off season acquisitions and a very improved system and players as well. I hope the team will remain intact. Keep improving!

hey jaemark, this is my first time here. loved your blog. I'm a die-hard Purefoods fan (read : died-hard in all PF losses) since its birth in 1988 (after being a Crispa, Tanduay die-hard, that is.). Happy to have found this place where Purefoods fans meet, err, hear out each other. Alam ko marami tayo. Feels great to have the AFC trophy once again. This has made us happiest (kahit di an magchampion ang Lakers, solve na ko. Pero kung mag back-to-back ang LA, why not?). Basta thank God for this championship. MOre to come, definitely! More power to idol Cap Alvin & coach RG. You have done the best for this team. Please don't tinker with this line-up, not yet in a long time.Nice blend, superb scoring, tenacious octopus defense, monster rebounding, 'san ka pa? Each one pitching for their own contrib. Lead by the Yap bros. and the Kerby-Ping-Rafi frontline. Plus the supersubs Canaleta and Simon, the questions is how many more rings? Truly, a great championship Congrats to Purefoods!! YAHOO!!!!!!! Kudos to this blog spot.
