Purefoods finds ways to win, takes 3-0 lead over Alaska

To the naked eye, the last two games of the ongoing PBA Philippine Cup finals series between Purefoods and Alaska have been pretty much alike. They have been low-scoring games, with Purefoods pulling out the win at the last possessions.

The scores have been low because these teams play slow; as j_myxx of Patay ang Butiki pointed out in the comments of my post about game 1, these are the two slowest teams in the league. However, adjusting the scores for pace shows that the two games were vastly different: game 2 was a wild shootout, with each team going over the 100-point efficiency mark, while game three was a defensive struggle, as Purefoods barely topping 90 points while holding Alaska to 89.

PF PTSALA PTSPF EFF EFFALA EFFPOSS
Game 28685102.41101.2283
Game 3797890.7889.6387

The data is even more interesting when looking at Purefoods’ last six games (all wins), dating back to its semifinals series against San Miguel. Two things stand out: Purefoods is playing at its preferred slow pace, and there’s no rhyme or reason for their wins.

Purefoods finds ways to win

They’ve been winning in hoop-burning shootouts, and they’ve been winning in ugly defensive battles. To put it more succinctly, Ryan Gregorio’s boys have been finding ways to win ballgames.

Last night was no different. With James Yap and Kerby Raymundo (well, especially Kerby Raymundo) shooting miserably from the field, bench players Peter June Simon (in the first half) and KG Canaleta (in the second half) stepped up and hit big shots. Credit really must go to Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio for sticking with those two guys and giving them the green light to shoot, even if it means allowing Canaleta to hoist up turnaround, fadeaway three-pointers. Also, Gregorio played Simon at point guard for a stretch in the first half, allowing the struggling super-sub to have the ball in his hands to run the pick-and-roll and shoot over LA Tenorio. Rookie Rico Maierhofer had a good stretch too, slithering his way to easy baskets around the hoop.

It helps Purefoods’ cause that they have Marc Pingris and Rafi Reavis wreaking havoc on the boards. It just brings such a different dynamic to the game for a shooter to know that he can throw it up, because he has those guys hanging around the paint waiting to clean up his mess.

Alaska started out fairly strongly, matching up with Purefoods with their own big-ball lineup, as Tim Cone inserted Reynel Hugnatan to start the game in lieu of Tony de la Cruz. The move forces Purefoods to guard Hugnatan with their small forward (usually Marc Pingris), which means Sakuragi couldn’t go out and harass either of Alaska’s guards out in the perimeter. Unlike with dela Cruz, Purefoods can’t get away with guarding Hugnatan with James Yap.

But big ball only works when you can actually go with a big lineup, and Alaska couldn’t go big when Sonny Thoss got into foul trouble. I’ve mentioned before in my post about Alaska and in my FHM preview that Thoss might be the Aces’ most important player, and it was on full display last night, as Purefoods feasted on them when he was on the bench. This is why the Samigue Eman pickup could potentially be so great for Alaska, because if the big guy can develop, the Aces wouldn’t have to take such a big hit when Thoss is chilling on the bench.

One more thing I’d like to note about the game last night was LA Tenorio starting to pull all his crap again. The flopping, the flailing, the posturing, the ‘incidental’ forearms he leaves on his defender before getting the ball on the inbounds, and just his general smarmy douchiness. He was in tip-top OA Tenorio form all game long, and I think that he squandered all of Alaska’s karma after game 2. The basketball gods do not suffer douchebags gladly.

Alaska now faces very tall odds in this series. Will they win? Probably not. Can they win? Since we started with some stats stuff, let me throw out this old post from ESPN’s John Hollinger writing about 0-3 comebacks in the NBA:

All 83 times that a team has taken a 3-0 lead in an NBA best-of-seven playoff series, it has gone on to win the series.

But somebody is going to be the first to buck the trend. It happened for the first time in baseball with the Red Sox a few years ago, and inevitably it will happen in basketball, too.

And when would it happen? Most likely with a team that's basically as good as its opponent.

The logic applies too in the PBA. If a comeback from a 0-3 deficit were to happen – and at this point, the chances are very, very slim – it would happen when two teams are evenly matched. Patay ang Butiki noted that, before the series, each team had practically the same point-differential over its opponents. Statistically, the teams were about the same. You can’t get more evenly-matched than that.

In a series like this ,all stats are thrown out of the window and its quite clear Purefoods wants it more and they have the guts to shoot those pressure pack outside shots in the homestretch.Marc Pingris intensity is contagious they dive for every looseball and they have the crowd on their side to energize them.Tim Cone is right ,those three games could have gone eitherway but Purefoods thrives on this situation while his players have so many butterflies on their stomach they play not to lose instead of playing to win come what may..yesterday's game was no exception somehow if you were a Purefoods fan you have that feeling that Alaska will once again foldup in the homestretch and they did.
btw in case you were around then Tenorio's gulang reminds me of Mike Bilbao.

i hate to discount the aces but they haven't showed enough mental resolve to win close games, leading or behind.

and they can't rely on their much heralded backcourt, a very overrated duo.

the yaps can take them to school anytime. they have the swag, coolness, veteran poise and clutch.

Mas kabado pa ako kagabi kapag si Kerby ang nasa loob kesa kay KG...missing easy lay-ups plus overcomplainng to the calls...I guess, the PF team once again, bailed-out "the kid", not the hurried 3pt attempt by KG in the last 19 secs....

Kerby will be Kerby. No matter what child-like acts he do on the court, I would still love him to play for Purefoods. He actually plays more than a 100% all the time. That's why he is like that. He gives so much passion into the game that sometimes its devastating to some point.

I guess we can't discount the image of him on that sore-loser comment "ako pa rin ang mvp" (tama ba, i want to forget it kasi. :D)

Anyways, I don't want to think that Alaska can climb back from that 3-0 hole that they themselves dug into. But as what that articles says, there is always a first time. I'm just hoping that it won't be against us. Otherwise, I and I guess Jaemark, will again be criticizing RG and the rest of the coaching staff. lol

I have a great feeling that we will sweep this series since our boys is really determined on winning. Especially the "sampayan brigade" lead by our center Rafi Reavis. If we win, I would like to see that guy be Finals MVP together perhaps with Marc Pingris.

i feel the same way about kerby. at this point in his career, he is what he is. there will be nights when he'll be the best player on the court, by far, and there will be nights when he'll be awful.

but you're right, he plays hard all the time, and you really can't ask for more than that. also, who'll you trade him for, if you were to trade him? seigle? washington? devance? no way! ranidel? maybe. but he's still not the playmaker that kerby is.

FYI, years ago, KR was in the radar of international scouts for prospects in the NBA.

if only KR has that in-game mentality, poise, savvy, 'tude and decision-making of Cap Alvin, he could be the best player in the league for several years now. he could have been a complete package. he has the skills, height and hops.
#4.1.1.1 jaemark on 2010-03-01 21:11 (Reply)
i heard about that. if kerby had all those things that alvin had, well, he'd probably be in the nba.
#4.1.1.1.1 super_polgas on 2010-03-02 09:36 (Reply)
tama. he was considered because of his height and dribbling skills before. ewan ko ba kung baket ever since nawala si alvin sa team as a player parang nawalan na sya ng sense of direction. hehe.

"Statistically, the teams were about the same. You can’t get more evenly-matched than that. "

It's ironic because before the start of this series, most bloggers and even seasoned basketball analysts are predicting that PF is no match against AA with the way AA swiftly discarded BGK and how PF struggled to even enter the semis. Now, everybody is singing a different tune.

Bilog nga talaga ang bola. BTW, how do you translate that in english? The ball is a circle or the ball is a sphere? LOL

the ball is round. lol

hoy, foxy! even pf fans are stunned to see this happening but we're all glad.

oo nga. lahat talaga sila stunned eh. kaya nga di sila makaget over sa game 2 win ng purefoods. lalo na may kasamang contested call. :D

i couldnt have agreed more. PF just finds ways to win. When they need a bucket, they just get one. I guess this just proves teams that go through tougher climbs in the early stages of the playoffs do get tougher. Also Aces depend so much on the system to be good. That past 2 AFCs, their system just becomes predictable and stagnant. Isnt the triangle offense all about taking what the defense gives you? The Aces are just running their plays and PF is just reading their offense. They have to be more analytical. Joe's move in the 2nd to the last play said it all. He had an open J but he choose to drive because he wanted to get a "higher percentage shot". Its tough as a fan of Aces see them lose 3 straight close games. Pero mejo napaasa ako sa last paragraph mo ah. Haha. Sayang hindi man umabot ng 6 games tong series na toh. Parati ako umaasa na magrerelax PF pero ayaw. Haha

i don't know if it was just me. but when i was watching the game live last sunday, i can't help but notice how tightly bonded pfoods players were as compared to the members of the other team. there's that undeniable "bromance" on the bench of pfoods. i see that every time i watch the game on tv.. and i saw it up close in araneta. when kerby finally made that field goal, and the way he "shouted" --- all those emotions, ba't walang ganon ang alaska? and yes, i am a pfoods fan. =) i am hoping for a 4-0 sweep this wednesday. they say pfoods is just getting all the luck. i say, well... they deserve all that.

The system of Alaska just like in the past relied so much in backcourt players and 1 GOOD legit center to run that triangle offense...

Now, they still have good backcourt guards in the likes of Miller and Tenorio, but Good center...I doubt!

They need a Poch Juinio or a Bong Hawkins kind of a player!
