Bullshit call by referee Maui Maurillo mars game 2 of Purefoods vs. Alaska

I spent the past couple of days back at my family’s ancestral home in Middle of Nowhere, Iloilo to attend to some family matters, so I missed the second game of the Philippine Cup finals between Purefoods and Alaska. Quite serendipitously, I ran into Patricia Bermudez-Hizon and Vince ‘The Prince’ Hizon in the airport just before my flight back to Manila, and they filled me on what happened in game 2.

Back at home a couple of hours later, I watched video of referee Maui Maurillo calling a bailout foul on Alaska’s Joe Devance while defending Kerby Raymundo’s desperation jumper with 1.7 seconds left.

That call was bullshit. Complete, utter bullshit.

I hate the call as a Purefoods fan – and, if I may, a prominent enough fan for the team’s coach to feel the need to address my comments – because I don’t want to win half as much as I want to win the right way. The controversy of this call undermines all the efforts of my team, from James Yap’s game-long brilliance (32 points on 20 shots), to Kerby Raymundo’s clutch hit, to the excellent work by the Purefoods coaching staff in preparing the team for Alaska’s adjustments after game 1.

After the game, Alaska team manager Joaqui Trillo said, “I don’t think Purefoods was happy with the win. I think they would have wanted to earn the win instead of it being given to them on a silver platter.” I’m not too sure about the Purefoods team, but this Purefoods fan completely feels that way.

Now the only thing people will remember about this game will be Maurillo’s bullshit call, instead of the Purefoods furious rally at the end of the game. The only video people will be watching from the game will be that last play, instead of excellent James Yap sequence that Dre Gonzales described, “James Yap just hit the shot of the year. An alley oop caught with one hand and with one motion laid it up with a finger roll.” It sounds like a highlight for the ages, and I don’t know if it will ever see the light of YouTube.

I hate the call as an admirer of the Alaska basketball organization. I could only imagine how the whole team feels today, but I’m sure that the Alaska brain trust is trying their best to get the team to move forward and not feel too sorry for themselves. As Francis Ochoa deftly points out, Alaska has taken the high road in their response to the incident.

I hope they come out fighting today, and give their fans a good effort. Fans like Steve Racelis, who apparently suffered a heart attack at the end of the game and underwent brain surgery yesterday.

I hate the call, most of all, as a PBA fan. My favorite kind of feedback is from people who tell me that they haven’t been watching the PBA, but have done so again because of stuff I’d been writing, and they’re always surprised by how great it is. This is the best Philippine basketball has to offer, the game Rafe Bartholomew passionately raves about, most recently in FreeDarko.

Maurillo’s bullshit call undermines my case. Over the course of this tournament, there has been a lot of righteous indignation over the Wynne Arboleda incident and the Talk N Text walkout, and in each instance, the offending party were assessed heavy penalties.

This is almost as bad, because it robs fans of the opportunity to witness two great teams duking it out for the win. Hell, I’m a Purefoods fan, and my team got the win, and I’m pissed off about Maurillo’s stupid call. I don’t see any reason why significant penalties shouldn’t be assessed by the PBA on Maurillo, who also happened to work the Talk N Text walkout game.

Think about how big a stage the PBA finals is, and how much money the PBA will lose from fans turned off by this bullshit call. If this were any other industry, Maurillo would be fired by now.

Jae, nice read as always. I wrote that on m,y blog as well and got a deluge of negative feedbacks from fans who were so blind to determine what is right or wrong. But anyway, here's something I got from PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios. He told me that there was indeed a contact and left it to the officials to decide if there was a foul. Nevertheless, Maurillo may have been spared of a sanction but he won't escape criticisms from the public
#1.1 jaemark on 2010-02-28 16:57 (Reply)
wow, no sanctions for Maurillo? jeezus.

i hope alaska/tnt/other teams push for changes to the officiating system at the board level.

We saw how the episode with TNT ended up.Obviosly MISSION IMPOSSIBLE!

A foul is a foul. No matter how minimal the contact. There's no gray lining there.

It's surprising that you emphasized more on that one stupid play by JDV (not the trapo with an elephant ear) and none has been mentioned on the way AA wasted their 14 point lead 5 minutes on the game. Don't get me wrong. I'm not a fan of both teams but you seemed to have crossed the line when you advocate to fire someone who was just doing his job ----- making a crucial and unpopular judgment call. Well, damn if you, damn if you don't.

Talking about biased perspective...

hahaha... ang BP... hahaha...
#2.1 jaemark on 2010-02-28 17:32 (Reply)
see, the problem is that bullshit call by Maui Maurillo overshadowed the whole game, which was excellent. otherwise, yeah, we'll all be talking about the Purefoods comeback/Alaska chokejob.

and it was a bullshit call. Norman Black was railing against it on the broadcast, which says a lot, because these broadcasters are discouraged from talking about the officiating on air.
#2.1.1 kugmong_batchoy on 2010-02-28 17:43 (Reply)
Just 2 questions. Was that last call a foul or not? or was it a minimal contact by JDV that warrants a non-call?

If it's the former and it was indeed a foul, then we have nothing to discuss here and even Norman Black would be wrong also.

If it's the latter, then you are re-defining what basketball rules is all about. Yes, it was a bullshit call and it overshadowed the competitiveness of the whole game but the bottom line is.. A FOUL IS A FOUL. This is not a democracy where the popular vote prevails.

hahaha... ang BP... hahaha...
#2.1.1.1 jaemark on 2010-02-28 18:00 (Reply)
not too sure about PBA rules, but the NBA rule book has a clarification about incidental contact, explaining explicitly not all contact should be fouls. Maurillo got that call wrong.

- Only the referee can make that decision. Fans have to no choice but to accept his decision. It is based on the judgement of the referee. That is what judgement call is all about.

If it's the former and it was indeed a foul, then we have nothing to discuss here and even Norman Black would be wrong also.
- Again, Norman Black is just a game commentator and not a referee. His opinion does not matter. So does the fans.Only the referee's opinion matter.

If it's the latter, then you are re-defining what basketball rules is all about. Yes, it was a bullshit call and it overshadowed the competitiveness of the whole game but the bottom line is.. A FOUL IS A FOUL. This is not a democracy where the popular vote prevails.
- A foul is a foul according to the referee's judgement. We have nothing to talk about. Case closed.

A foul is a foul.It was basically a judgement call by the referee.Anybody may agree or disagree but still the call remains on the judgement of the particular referee. I am a fan of Purefoods but I found the call questionable. But I am not a referee so I can not do something about it. I am only a somebody watching the game.
#3 RCJ on 2010-02-28 17:59 (Reply)
Maybe another interesting question to look into was who initiated the contact aside from was there a contact or no contact?

If you will look at the footages, Joe Devance was playing straight up and it was Kerby Raymundo slightly jumped into the defense to get a contact. Does it truly merits a foul? If ever the referee didn't blow his whistle what would be the effect?

Well, had the referees let go of the play, the game would have gone into overtime and teams will have at least five more minutes to determine which team deserves the win.

The call capped off a big endgame rally by Purefoods, which made a good run. But that bum call spoiled the day to those two fighting squads. The referee deprived the Giants of a great come-from-behind victory and denied the Aces of a chance for a possible win -- at least in the next five minutes

The fact of the matter is, referee Maurillo decided the outcome.
#3.1 kugmong_batchoy on 2010-02-28 18:15 (Reply)
If you look at the slomo, KR faked then Devance jumped with is hands straight on the air and as Devance was on the way down, KR jumped for the shot and his elbows touched the hands of Devance.

Na-veteran move ba si Devance? Am sure it was a veteran move. As fast action as it may be for Devance's hand to avoid that elbow from KR, whether it affected KR's shot or not, still is a foul in any terms you want to disect. The only difference is that it was done during the crucial moment.

Well anyway, i would have to disagree with your last sentence. It was not the referee that decided the game. 1st, it was the run made by PF to erased that 14 point lead, 2nd it was the veteran move made by KR, and lastly and most importantly, it was the first free throw made by KR after that infamous call that won the game.

Stop this blame game of call or non-call because it is just miniscule compared to the whole blunder AA made for the last 5 minutes of the game.

go BGK !!!

hahaha... ang BP... hahaha...

Kugmong batchoy, get over yourself. How long have you been watching basketball? Do You even play the game? If you want to define a foul as any contact, then everybody would foul out of every game. Even boxing out and screens are fouls then, huh? Contact is unavoidable with 10 huge guys running up and down a 94x50 court, so if it isn't a blatant mauling of a player or doesn't affect play, then the referees is supposed to just let it go. That was indeed a terrible call, and it should not have been made. It just undermined Purefoods' tremendous rally in crunch time since the game ended with the referee handing them the win.
#3.1.1.1 kugmong_batchoy on 2010-03-01 02:31 (Reply)
"...so if it isn't a blatant mauling of a player or doesn't affect play, then the referees is supposed to just let it go."

Is that how you define a foul? You're funny. Go to the rule book and define for me what is a foul. If you can answer me honestly then you answered your own question already.

That is the problem with you and most of us Filipino. We tend to bend the rules a little bit just to accommodate our own whimses.

Get over it already. Move on to the next goal. Prepare for game 4 and avoid that humiliating sweep.

hahaha... ang BP... hahaha...
#3.1.1.1.1 Joey_Escalera on 2010-03-07 12:53 (Reply)
That game probably had too much effect on Alaska. But teams have to move on after the game. Whether it gets favor of officiating or not, the players and coach just have to make do of what they can control and what they cannot control in a ballgame.
#3.1.1.2 maeve on 2010-03-01 03:57 (Reply)
i bet, he meant, it's contact during shots and not a mere contact during a game.. clearly, there was a contact, it might be slight or not, but the fact is, there was a contact when the shot was made.

as what sky mentioned, it was a judgment call, it could either be called or not. call it a bullshit or whatever, but it was the chokejob of aces that should be blamed for their lose. and besides even if it was not called, pf will still win the game in overtime with the way pf was playing and other than that aces bigmen were foul troubled and thoss was fouled out.

ps: pero panis na talaga ang article na to, dapat nung sat pa to..lol..
#4 RCJ on 2010-02-28 18:27 (Reply)
Like I've said, everything but the last play. A referee from the PBA himself told me that if a call doesn't effect a play, that it should have been let go. So why made a call when it doesn;t have any effect on both squads?
#5 Jude Turcuato on 2010-02-28 22:12 (Reply)
If you go by "a foul is a foul" and it should be called no matter what regardless of circumstances, then everyone would foul out by halftime.

Peace.

Jaemark,

Let us go back to the Game 5 of the 1996 AFC Finals where a phantom foul was called on Bong Ravena on Jeffrey Cariaso.

That was a bitter pill that's so hard to swallow.

And for so long, Purefoods has been on the raw end of officiating.

In a way I would take that as some sort of redemption although as a basketball fan that was an incidental call, a judgment call.

However, as foxy had pointed out, the choke job of AA was inexplicable. Worse, their two-time MVP was nowhere in sight during those last four minutes in which Purefoods made that torrid run.

He was such a big choker and Tim Cone's coaching was an epic fail.
#6.1 jaemark on 2010-03-01 11:20 (Reply)
i don't think anyone's making any excuse for Alaska here. of course they choked away the game, just as they did last night. when you do that, chances are, you're going to lose the game anyway. i am very happy that Purefoods is up 3-0.

but my point here really goes beyond winning and losing; it's about making the correct call. as you said, that 'phantom call' on Ravena still hurts, and truth is, that call had more merit to it than the Devance foul. i wouldn't want to wish that phantom call anyone, not even an opponent. and i do feel iffy about celebrating finally getting a bullshit call in my team's favor.
#6.1.1 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-03-01 12:16 (Reply)
yes, we may not find it here. but elsewhere, you can find tons of blames on the refs but little on the alaska excuses (they don't have enough aces up on their sleeves, lol).

but then, i'd take it as some sort of redemption since for such a long time, purefoods has suffered enough being on the short end of the stick. remember the jy suspension, and the 1994 afc finals where cap alvin was bludgeoned?

at the end of the day, that was really a judgment call. any which way, purefoods will win that game because of their end-game rally that may carry them to OT while the aces may find it hard to summon some strength and courage to will them.

alaska coaching staff and management should resign en masse while some of its players should be traded, not with purefoods, for choking their jobs.

i know where you're coming from, pero matagal na talagang sakit iyan sa pba, hindi naman masolusyunan.

he was 2-time mvp because 12 PBA players cannot compile enough statistics as they were busy with asian the games (2004 and 2008). In essence, he was the the 13th best player on both occasions.
#7.1.1 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-03-01 17:20 (Reply)
o, really?

do you know his season stats in his 1st mvp? he only averaged 9.7 ppg!

and the some people dreaded to see a Fil-for to win the MVP and that was Davonn Harp.

also, the reason why he won his 2nd mvp? you better ask wacky trillo how caguioa was disqualified.

c'mon, there was nothing on the video quite like the Devance/Kerby play.

awesome find though. instructive.

Actually, there is. The foul by Brandon Roy on Jannero Pargo. It's the second play. It is not similar but it explains how that same contact should be called. Try watching it again. Referee Ronnie Nunn explains why.

Anyways, I'm also a die hard fan of Purefoods and I don't want to win with a controversial call either. But still, if this was not called we would react the other way around like the Alaska fans do.

There will never be a perfect game when calls are really just. I guess you're right that it's a bullshit call but if we're going to remove everybody who does a bull shit call that appears to us, then, we will no longer have referees in any league.

Still, interesting piece. Though late. Still a nice one.

i dunno about that Brandon Roy foul.. i think the issue there was that he didn't allow Pargo a clean landing.

As a true blooded basketball fan at all cost, that should be a let-go situation . De Vance made a hell of a STRAIGHT D. Kirby initiated the contact and in fact he occupied space on De Vance spot of Defense ...... PBA fans was worth expecting much more than that kind of a game, referee's must have to be much aware in those kind of situations esp. IN A CHAMPIONSHIP GAME .
........... Officials of the PBA insist that it was a good call by the REFEREE, now let me ask them or let them review what happened last night , those last 2 plays of alaska.
1. De Vance drives to the Basket and 3 purefoods players clovered him where i think raymundo could have been called for a foul (this was much more than a foul compared to the call they blew in the last play of game 2 ... isn't it..?)
2. Miller drives to the hoop and REAVIS came out of no-where to block his shot and when he comes dows he bump into miller ..... obviously that was a foul you can not jump into an offensive player after a shot.

im not rooting in any team either.... (DIE HARD GINEBRA hehehehe)

im concerned about the PBA and its fans.

If that's the case, then let's review every play made during the game and let's analyze if it was the right call. Or better yet, let's commission GE or SIEMENS to develop a robot that can replace our imperfect, biased and mortal referees to do the officiating for us. That way, we wont argue like this anymore.

It's just a bittersweet ending for AA and and they can't swallow it. They should moved on already.

As an Alaska fan, I have accepted the collapse of the Aces in Games 2 and 3. When you're nursing a 13, 14 point lead in the last 5 minutes, you don't succumb to pressure and start playing stupidly.

I always say, never let the game reach a point where in a call decides the outcome of the game.

As a basketball fan though, I would have to agree with the post that the officiating of that game marred what was an amazing comeback by Purefoods.

When I think of Game 2, two things haunt me:
1. James Yap left open to hit two consecutive three-pointers
2. The officials refusing to stop the game after the Alaska Aces fans collapsed.

#2 was the worst call of that night.
#12.1 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-03-01 17:34 (Reply)
on your 2nd point, an audience is not a direct participant / player in a game. unless he disrupts the natural flow of the game, like attacking a player, a game official or team official, or entering the playing area, whatever he does may not necessarily force the game to be halted.

since it was a life or death situation, well we did not if it was, he could have faked it, then the better thing to do was for tim cone to call a time out. but did he? he is one of their fans so if he values him then he should have shown greater compassion and concern by suing a time out, if they have one, for that person. but again, did he?

so why blame the refs?

is this another way for the Alaska Excuses team?

lastly, if you go to the venue to cheer for your team and shout choice words against your opponents and the team officials, beware then. you may just reap immediately what you have sown.
#12.1.1 ivpointplay on 2010-03-01 23:57 (Reply)
Its not an excuse for Alaska. And yes, it;s not in the flow of the game. And yes it could have disrupted the Purefoods momentum.

But I remember in one Ateneo-UP game last season 72 when Arvin Braganza's dad collapsed. The officials then stopped the match so that they could provide IMMEDIATE medical assistance to the fallen fan.

I'd just like to believe that the PBA has enough decency to prioritize the safety of the fans above the flow of the game.

And Tim Cone could hot have called a Timeout because it was Purefoods ball.

I'm sorry if you feel differently but would rather risk the life of a person on the off chance that he's "faking it?"

JY inbounds

KR gets the ball

1.7 - KR pump faked JDV, fished for a foul as ref Raymund Maurillo, not Maui Mauricio as QH mentionied in his classy column.

AA can't believe it.

Black erred it when he commented that there shouldn't be a foul. Clearly, JDV invaded the sphere of verticality of KR. KR's right elbow, his shooting arm, was clearly touched. FOUL!

1.7 sec - KR makes his 1st FT; AA: 85 - PF: 86

KR intentionally misses his 2nd FT and tips the ball out of bounds.

Game ends.

PF leads series, 2-0.

Tim Cone Wacky charge to the refs.

sure it was a foul.

the problem is, it wasn't a playoff foul...

and it shouldn't have decided the game.

alaska have every right to get mental but then again, the last thing they need to check right now are the ref calls because as of this moment, they continue to wilt under pressure.
#14 WigWam on 2010-03-01 16:06 (Reply)
Leave that PF Finals win alone. Let Messeurs Uytengsu & Trillo if not the whole Alaska contingent, just console themselves visiting their trophy room and take deep sighs.
The frustrating fact is this long NBA-copycat Association still sucks, and even has become worse on its current admin. In retrospect, the late Leo Prieto hired NBA refs to be the 12th & 13th man oncourt in a PBA finals game 3 decades ago aimed to inspire everybody and heal the then lingering league sickness, sadly it has gone to worst. The NBA has improved distinctively somehow but its photocopy rans out of ink in imitating the very soul of every sport, fairness.

oops, 11th & 12th - only 2 whistleblowers per game then.

We can ran't and rave about that controversial call all week long butthe bottomline it's all Alaska's fault..those miss freethrows by Devance in game two and Miller in game three in the dying seconds ..will you also blame that on the refs..bad officiating is a long time problem of the PBA ..its all part of the PBA its the job of the coach to instruct his players not wilt under pressure and protect their lead at all cost and don't let the referees have a say in the outcome ..the bottomline Alaska choke that said it all..they bungled shots that could have stop their bleeding in the homestretch.Tim Cone has been in the business of coaching for quite sometime,he should know when to douse a big time rally in a championship series..Alaska aces have butterfly in their stomach they kept committing errors after errors in the closing minutes.

again, a multi-titled, a grand slam coach should and his staff should resign! en masse, that is!

they should trade some of their chokers. lol
#16.1.1 John Copada brigade on 2010-03-01 20:38 (Reply)
The legendary Virgilio Dalupan coach of the mighty Crispa redmanizers and architect of PBA first grandslam resign as Floro's trusted bench tactician in 1982 after coaching the legendary team for almost 15 years dating back to MICAA days..Crispa went dry and the management were quickly rewarded with a grandslam under a new coach with different strategy.Anyway he is the idol of coach Tim so why not follow the footsteps the legend and just like Baby a lot of other teams will come knocking at your door. The question is who will take over in case Tim resigns..Alaska needs a popular player with a big following to inject some glamour ..again the question is..who is that player.

jaemark, you're Ilonggo?

Taga Bacolod City ang asawa ko. Ti nagatuon ako sang Ilonggo pirmi lang. It's fun to study. I can't understand Tagalog though.

Yes! Ridiculous call. That foul would have never been called in the NBA.

hats off to you jaemark..

kahit purefoods fan ka, wala kang pinapanigan pagdating sa mga wrong calls ng referee. yes, it was a call where purefoods benefitted big time. and a win is a win, and gave them possibility of having a sweep (which they did tonight). pero pinuna mo parin ang tawag na yun ni maurillo.

as for the purefoods and ryan gregorio winning the championship.. kailan officially start ng 3 years? hehe...

tama!that call was a "bullshit" call. :D
though im a PF fan and im happy that they won that game,i really thought that an overtime was a way lot better.
PBA should hire and fire referees in preparation 4 d nxt season.
#20 Joey_Escalera on 2010-03-07 12:29 (Reply)
It was basically a judgement call. I maybe a Purefoods fan but still I found the call very questionable. Maybe it is about time for the PBA to institute new changes like having an instant replay and adding another referee in a game to make it a total of three referees. The NBA has already done these changes. Should not the PBA do the same considering that the league is patterned from the pro basketball league in the U.S.? Just asking.

Because of this blog entry, Maurillo was not named as the PBAPC Ref of the Year! lol

BTW, the awardee, Quilinguen, showed his dirty finger to rabid Purefoods fans in a game vs. SLR at the Ynares Pasig. Buti na lang talaga, napigilan nina Cap at Rey si Gov. Pardo kasi susugurin na niya si Quilinguen.

That game was badly officiated. Even worse than the BMEG-SMB game in which they called a flopping foul on JY when Hontiveros elbowed him on the nose. lol

anyway, Jae, kasalanan mo talaga kaya di nanalo si maurillo! lol
