An SMB fan speaks

Editor's Note: This guest post comes for Tiger Gimenez, a self-confessed San Miguel fanatic. I figured we needed a voice from the San Miguel side of things to balance things here at the blog. I had no idea he would go Tony Atayde on San Miguel management. Enjoy!

I am a San Miguel fan who wrote to Fire Quinito after the Alaska trade article, hoping to see a follow-up focusing on San Miguel. I was surprised when Jaemark asked if maybe I could do it instead since, according to him, I was “in a better position to give color to San Miguel’s trades over the years.” I think he also wanted it to come from someone who’s an SMB fan and not from someone who’s a huge Purefoods supporter like him, especially now with the hotly contested semi-final battle between both teams currently ongoing (I think it goes 7 games). Now even though I'm a HUGE SMB fanatic (ever since Ramon Fernandez came over), I’ve always been a very critical one – my family laughs at me because I shout advice and invectives at the SMB players and coaches on TV whenever they play – and I wanted to do a breakdown and analysis of all their recent bonehead moves.

One thing I notice is that Alaska always seems to be giving SMB the short-end of the stick in these trades and transactions. It’s like a never-ending litany of idiocy for San Miguel management.

First off they trade Nic Belasco for Brandon Cablay, and what happens? Cablay gets injured! Honestly, I don’t remember Brandon ever playing a full season, much less play any extended minutes in any SMB game. And this was the guy they hoped would replace Olsen in the line-up? As for Nic he became a vital cog and a very productive player for Alaska.

Then there's the god-awful LA Tenorio trade which just takes the cake for me. This is the best way to build a super team, trade away a young point guard on the cusp of greatness for an older one who's not as good and has a long history of injuries!

So what happens the first year of that trade? Tenorio blossoms and was a big reason why Alaska made the finals of the All-Filipino that year. As for Mike Cortez? He blows out his knee during the eliminations! Granted, they do win the Reinforced Conference that year, but that’s probably due more to the addition of Gabe Freeman than anything else. I tell you every time I see Tenorio hitting a crucial shot or dishing out an incredible assist while wearing an Alaska uniform, it just breaks my heart.

And now to top it all off, they leave Sam Eman unprotected, and sure as rain is wet Alaska snaps him up! WHAT IDIOTS! Alaska management totally owns the SMB brain trust. I have a feeling whenever Joaqui Trillo needs to upgrade his roster the first thing he thinks to himself is, “I wonder who on SMB we can use and how can we pry him away from them.” I've got to say, even though I hate Alaska's guts, their management team has earned my undying respect and admiration. Joaqui Trillo is the Filipino Jerry West! (Jerry West when he got Shaq and Kobe, not Jerry West during his Memphis Grizzlies years)

Seriously, who the hell makes the personnel decisions for SMB? It’s like watching a three-year old playing in rush-hour traffic. They did luck out with Arwind Santos, but that can be attributed more to Burger King’s ineptitude rather than the competence of SMB management. I guess it also helps that Alaska has had only one coach in 21 years, while SMB has gone through 5. I mean it’s probably easier to get people who’ll fit your system if your system didn’t keep changing every two or three years.

Also, what’s with this UAAP collegiate trip that SMB seems to be on? A couple of years ago they tried out an all-Ateneo core (Villanueva, Tenorio, Fonacier and Gonzalez), this time around it’s an FEU thing (Santos, Jonas Villanueva and Denok Miranda, who I HATE, but more on that later on). I mean just because they won a championship together in college is no guarantee that they’ll be able to do the same in the pros! Who thinks up of these schemes?

Finally, do you realize that all the super rookies that people were gushing about that SMB drafted in the past three years are now playing and even excelling in other teams? Tenorio and Eman with Alaska, and Gabby Espinas with Sta Lucia. I have a sinking feeling that now that Eman's in Alaska he's gonna start putting up double-doubles on a regular basis. Arrggghh! So even though the team that SMB has right now is really, really deep, imagine how much scarier they'd be if Tenorio , Belasco, Espinas and Eman were still there.

Just to say, even though I have a lot of complaints with how this team is built not to mention how it’s coached (Coach Siot maybe you should try taking advantage of your team’s size, I mean you have 8 guys who are all above 6’ 3”, just saying maybe you should look into that). I still root my heart out for them, I still watch them every time they play, I still shout and scream every time they win. I guess in the end I’ll still always be a true-blue SMB fanatic.

FINAL NOTE: I just have to say that I hate, I HATE Denok Miranda!! He's constantly driving to the hole but he can't freaking finish! Either he gets blocked or he misses the shot! Then on the rare occasions that he gets fouled he can't for the life of him sink his freethrows! Jeez! An added downside to this is that when he gets blocked or misses it usually leads to an opposing fast break since our safety guard (Denok) is usually on his back on the other end of the court! Denok, here's a suggestion: STOP going to the rack!

Seems I remember this also happening in one of their championship games against La Salle, instead of giving the ball to Arwind, Denok decides, the hell with it I'm going to the rim! Of course, he misses the shot, they lose the game and the championship. Sheesh, the thought that SMB could’ve had an LA Tenorio-Jonas Villanueva guard combo for the foreseeable future just makes me wanna cry!

I am an SMB Fan also.

and I also do hate Denok.

How I wish Coach Siot would utilize Bonbon more instead of Denok out there wasting their chances.

Tonight they need to focus and win. No more room for errors...

Good Luck!

Im a SMB fan also since ramon fernandez era... I dont agree sa mga sinasabi mo.. SMB already have the best roster so stop crying like a baby for losing these ex SMB players.. In fact SMB has too much talent in the roster. If hindi cla natrade wala sana silang career ngayon because SMB cant give them playing time they need.. Espinas is only playing because no choice ang SLR! If tenorio stayed sa SMB sigurado hindi xa nag.improve ganito kabilis dahil his playing time will not be consistent dahil daming pg sa SMB. I think SMB has the best line up in the league so makuntinto ka na sana dahil kawawa naman ang ibang teams kung kukunin na ng lahat ng SMC teams ang lahat na magagaling na players!

- SMB already have the best roster so stop crying like a baby for losing these ex SMB players.
_ Let's see, I wouldn't call a roster that can't even get to the finals "the best" by any stretch of the imagination. I dont think Danding Cojuangco would either.

-If tenorio stayed sa SMB sigurado hindi xa nag.improve ganito kabilis dahil his playing time will not be consistent dahil daming pg sa SMB.
- When they traded Tenorio they only had Racela and Villanueva as their PGs, so unlike now wherein they have 4 PGs, back then they only had 3. So you can't tell me they couldn't have found playing time for Tenorio back then. As for his improvement, even during his rookie year he was already showing signs of becoming a great player, so why would you trade away his potential for an injury-prone Mike Cortez?

- I think SMB has the best line up in the league so makuntinto ka na sana dahil kawawa naman ang ibang teams kung kukunin na ng lahat ng SMC teams ang lahat na magagaling na players!
- Again, if your team doesnt win the championship and doesnt even make it to the finals (worse, if they're embarassed three straight times in the semis), then no, they're not the best. The problem with SMC is exactly that (kukunin na ng lahat ng SMC teams ang lahat na magagaling na players!), they keep stockpiling talent left and right with no regard for team chemistry or other intangibles, like passion or heart.

They have the best roster in the PBA hands down, but it doesnt mean they will win the championship. I have one simple answer to all of your heartaches.. Change the damn COACH!
#2.1.1.1 Tiger on 2010-02-22 12:26 (Reply)
Check out Jaemark's newest entry. He enumerates on a point by point basis everything that's wrong with this SMB line-up. Just to belabor one point, he alludes to SMB's lack of athletic swing men and rebounders, then remember who SMB traded away recently, Espinas (athletic combo-forward, double-double threat), and Eman (large center who rebounds and blocks shots). Plus Coach Siot always loves playing this three-guard line-up. Guess who's thriving in a two or three guard set-up in Alaska, yup, LA Tenorio. So, basically when your trades have the net effect of making your team worse instead of better, then that would mean that SMB DOES NOT have the best roster in the PBA.

And yes, I agree with you that Coach Siot probably has to be replaced. Let's face it, he was thoroughly out-coached by Ryan Gregorio in this series. He persisted with that afore-mentioned three-guard lineup even when he was getting killed off the boards, he never found an answer for Purefoods zone defense and to top it all off, his substitution patterns were just plain horrible.
#2.1.1.1.1 jaemark on 2010-02-22 13:55 (Reply)
you know Coach Siot panicked in the last game when he started Bonbon Custodio. that's never a good sign.

i wouldn't place ALL the blame on him, but i've been harping on how San Miguel doesn't know how to play from behind. that's on the coach.

I think they traded LA away because they had Jonas in the wings waiting for his turn. If you think about it, Jonas seems to be more of in the mold of an Olsen. LA wasnt an instant big hit in SMB. He struggled at times and yes the potential was there but Jonas potential was also there. So they had to pick one. Now that they're the starting PGs , they're both mentioned in conversation of the top PGs in the PBA. I think you can take comfort in the the fact that trading LA has allowed Jonas to grow. And besides in SMB, LA was more of role player in SMB and never one of the main guys. Jonas seems to be one of the stars now in SMB. Maybe LA wasn't a good fit.

Dont feel bad about Eman. SMB had a chance with him. But he wasnt given a lot of opportunities because of the depth of the SMB team. SMB is like Portland to me. Lots of talent but has too much talent and is quite unfair to some of the guys because guys like Bonbon might be stars on other less talented teams. In short parehas kami sinasabi ni unknown. Haha. Let the other guys go.

SMB management is more like Dallas back in 2004. They just get the most talented players (Dirk. Jamison. Walker, etc) but guys who never complemented each other. Sometimes as an Aces fan, I wonder why the hell cant they do what SMB do? get top 10 players from other teams. haha. Pero iba iba style at mejo gumagana naman para sa kanila.

I dunno, I don't think Jonas Villanueva is on the same par as LA Tenorio. I dont think magkalapit man lang stats nila. Especially points and assists per game. Granted Villanueva has been a finals MVP, but it seems to me that while Tenorio has been blossoming Jonas seems to be regressing. This was especially evident in the series vs Purefoods. Bagsak lahat ng stats niya across the board. Lalo na Roger Yap seemed to own all of the SMB PGs, Jonas included. Yes, while he maybe would've owned Tenorio as well, Tenorio at least would've given him more of a challenge defensively, and we all know that when you have to concentrate more on your defense, your offense will suffer. Case in point Dondon Hontiveros who was a non-factor the whole series kasi si James Yap ang bantay niya.

And I dont think it was a case of LA and SMB not being good fits. Especially since Tanquincen loves to run a 3-guard offense, which LA would've been perfect for.

As for Eman, I'm not so steamed with SMB losing him per se, as I am with the way they lost him. Parang natutulog ang SMB management sa pancitan with the way they allowed Alaska to just pick him up na wala man lang kapalit. Sayang, sana na-trade na lang siya, para SMB could've gotten something in return.

About Denok, it's not so much about his determination to take every possession to the hole in a bahala na fashion. what really gets my goat is his utter lack of an outside shot. i don't think he can hit the side of a barn even if his life depended on it. he's a bulky slower version of paul artadi. and he shoots freethrows at a rate that would make even paul artadi cringe.

I agree with the writer's opinions on SMB's bonehead trades. i'd be happy if Denok was traded for some underrated player like ares dimaunahan or paulo hubalde.

maybe siot should start playing again and take denok's place.

What IF is the question in here

I mean, What If we did not trade LA, Its not guaranteed that he'll be playing like this (this good) donning the SMB Uniform. Could be better, Could be worse. Same goes with the Brandon Cablay and Mike Cortez trades.

Trading is always a Gamble in my opinion because once you've done a deal you'll never know what that player can bring to the other team and what this player can bring to our team. I guess its up to the Coaching Staff to maximize the talent a player had.

Just like Kobe, who would have thought that he would be like this? I mean, Charlotte wouldn't trade him if they only knew that Kobe would be one of the G.O.A.T. in the NBA.

Its the Future that is playing with us, only if we knew what the Future would be like then no one get the shorter end of a certain trade. and that makes basketball fun, Try to imagine every trade being equal and stuff, I guess I'll be Boring.

Its just that, YOU win SOME, you LOSE SOME!

I've long wondered why SMB hasn't traded Danny Seigle even after he started picking up those injuries. Sure he won ROY and some Finals MVPs, but I notice that every time he gets injured and comes back at the middle of the season, the team's rotation and chemistry suddenly crumbles. This conference serves as a good example.

iba ang may pinagsamahan.

unlike Alaska when players become less productive and maxed out their potential and in turn become a commodity that is highly dispensable, you can't say that to smb, bgk and purefoods.
#7.1.1 JE on 2010-02-22 13:04 (Reply)
Co-sign!

I believe SMC are very loyal to its players. another thing is that, the two Dannys and Olsen would retire donning that SMB Uniform.
#7.1.2 feslak on 2010-02-25 15:21 (Reply)
yeah, right. how many teams get their old players back once they traded them? alaska is the only team, so far, multiple times, that does that. san miguel teams? no, they buy other players.
#7.1.2.1 Legendary Skyflakes25 on 2010-02-25 15:51 (Reply)

really? did they bring back their former mvps johnny a and duremdes? lol

and i guess you're an smb fan. lol ka rin.

yeah, really? is that question meant to be answered or not, or does that question even merit an answer? sheesh, you're comparing two players out of many players alaska brought back. and you can't even answer the question which other team brings back their old players aside from alaska? lol ka rin.

wrong! lol ka talaga

so you mean those MVPs that AA produced were useless? lol ka talaga

i know one, and it's jaemark's favorite team, Purefoods! lol ka talaga

and they gave second chances to has-beens, including the player that AA used to cheat BGK, and that's Bong Solomon.

lol ka talaga

mag-aral kang mabuti ng PBA history ng marami kang bala. history revisionist ka eh.

lol ka talaga

ikaw, mag-aral kang umintindi para tama ang mga sagot mo.

"alaska is the only team, SO FAR, MULTIPLE TIMES, that does that. "

naintindihan mo ba? paanong history revision iyan? saka isa pa, ang sinasabi mong purefoods team na kumuha ng players nilang muli ay hindi mako-consider na "old players." nasa peak pa sina artadi at pingris. lol ka talaga rin!

"so you mean those MVPs that AA produced were useless? lol ka talaga."

ah, are you saying that for me? since when na sinabi ko iyan? pakita mo nga. lol ka talaga rin?

engk! wrong ka rin! binalik ko lang sa iyo ang guess mo kaya lol ka talaga rin!

"and they gave second chances to has-beens, including the player that AA used to cheat BGK, and that's Bong Solomon."

like alaska doesn't give chance to has-beens. they are at the forefront in doing that. lol ka talaga rin!

ah, yeah, the infamous bong solomon "cheat." funny, that's one instance where anti-alaska fans keep on picking from the underworld to mask the present situation wherein san miguel teams are cheating other teams through their "trades" and the infamous salary cap.

again, buy common sense, if you can afford it. it works wonders.

ha talaga? lol ka talaga

sige nga, sina tanuan (rip), sonny cabatu, dindo pumaren, and company?

and how about the has-beens like demigillio, harmon, abe king, frankie lim, balingit, realubit, arnold gamboa, etc.?

they were give another chance in the pba.

tell me, did your alaska reveal the medical condition of solomon to bgk at the time of the trade? lol ka talaga

cheating other teams? lol ka talaga

if you're going to blame smc teams, you should also blame the poorer teams for selling their players like slaves. lol ka talaga

and as if your team did not benefit from those trades.

and as if your team did not benefit from the fire house sale of the defunct shell team.

don't throw stones if you live in a glass house.

oh, so alaska fan talaga ako? porke binabato ang san miguel team corps, alaska na agad ang fan noon? sheesh. at may gana ka pang magsabi ng "ha talaga? lol ka talaga." lol ka talaga rin!

'yung mga sinabi mong players, those were either let go of their mother teams, contract ended, or traded. what i was referring to were those alaska players whom reached their peak with alaska, traded or let go by alaska in their peak or a little bit post peak (if there is such a word), and then reacquired by alaska after their obvious peak had expired. lol ka talaga rin!

how many of those players you mentioned undergone the same situation in a single team? you're twisting the original statement by giving an example that is not even in the context of my original statement. okay, blame me for not clarifying it further right away, but i'll blame you also for not asking what I meant before you react. lol ka talaga rin!

and by the way, jack tanuan(+) and sonny cabatu were given chances by alaska also. I thought you should know that. lol ka talaga rin!

"tell me, did your alaska reveal the medical condition of solomon to bgk at the time of the trade? lol ka talaga"

"and as if your team did not benefit from those trades."

"and as if your team did not benefit from the fire house sale of the defunct shell team."

my alaska? so from "i guess you are an aa fan. lol," it is now confirmed that I'm an alaska fan. by whom? by your ASSumption? maybe in your next post, I'm tiger woods. lol ka talaga rin!

"if you're going to blame smc teams, you should also blame the poorer teams for selling their players like slaves. lol ka talaga"

uh, excuses? passing the baton? let me blame them some other time, in my own volition. lol ka talaga rin!

"don't throw stones if you live in a glass house."

why shouldn't I? When you look into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you.

and no matter how great the team is, if there's a godfather who decides what team of his should be in the finals, we, the fans, can only wish upon a star. lol
