Betting on Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio

Did you know that Purefoods has made the finals of the last two Philippine Cup tournaments held in an even-numbered year? It won the all-Filipino in 2006, and was runner-up to Sta. Lucia in 2008.

Also, did you know that Ryan Gregorio has never lost a PBA semifinal series in his career? Of course, getting there has always been the problem.

Finally, did you know that if Purefoods wins the championship, they’ll have the most all-Filipino championships of any active PBA franchise?

So, at the risk of jinxing the team (again!), I'll wager these:

  • If Purefoods beats San Miguel in this series, I will refrain from criticizing Ryan Gregorio on this blog and on Twitter for one whole calendar year.

  • If Purefoods wins the championship, I will not only refrain from criticizing him for three whole calendar years, I will use this blog to fiercely defend his performance. He can march out of the dugout half-naked, take a piss at the scorer’s table, and call a walk-out for the team after the opening tip, and I’ll defend him here.

If he loses, well, he’ll still always be Ryan “The Genius” Gregorio to me.

Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio draws inspiration from Fire Quinito

hmmmm let me check...

if pf wins their series vs. smb, i will stop bashing him, too. lol

and will create my own blog, pfcoachforlife.com. lol

then you will have a competition. lol

if they will win the finals, which i am expecting they would, i will finish the design of the official purefoods tj giants website. lol

but that's lame.

i will bash all the pf haters at philstar.com for 3 straight years, pounce them to no end. lol

if they will lose, i won't use my skyflakes25 handle anymore. lol

galing sa isang philstar.com blogger, mrarchives:

A Purefoods-Alaska Finals series will rekindle an old rivalry.

In the previous six Finals showdowns between these franchises, both have won three championships.

For Purefoods:
- 1990 Reinforced Conference, after a 0-2 deficit in their best of 5 series
- 1994 Commissioner's Cup; Purefoods could have swept Alaska had Glenn Capacio did not miss a crucial free thow in Game 4
- 2002 Governors' Cup; Purefoods was down 0-2 but won 4 of the 5 remaining games

For Alaska:
- 1996 All Filipino Cup; who won't forget that phantom foul called on Ferdinand Ravena, Jr.
- 1997 Governors' Cup; Purefoods managed to win Game 1 but lost in the next four games
- 2000 All Filipino Cup; in 5 games

Other interesting things to look at:
- it was Alaska which ended the seven consecutive All Filipino Finals appearances of Purefoods from 1988 to 1994.
- after falling behind 1-3 in their semifinals series during the 2006 Philippine Cup, Purefoods stormed back to win the next three games and barged into the finals in which they eventually won in six games over Red Bull.

ayos, sa mga pinagsususulat natin dito, sobrang jinx na natin yung purefoods. should we expect the team to lose the next two games by a combined 75-point margin?

o abang lang tayo, dahil siguradong may game 7 ang pba?

Purefoods deserves better than RG!!! If it had a great coach, the team would have been a PBA dynasty right now. That includes San Miguel as well. If it had a better coach, it would have probably be a dysnasty as well. These two teams are way above all the other PBA teams in terms of talent.
#13.1 jaemark on 2010-02-19 02:52 (Reply)

If Purefoods wins against San Miguel Beer in this semifinal series, I think that the Giants has a big chance of winning against Alaska. Tim Cone maybe a better coach but he lacks the confidence that a great coach should possess. Besides, didn't RG "outsmart" him back in 2006 when Purefoods cameback from a 3-1 deficit. Definitely, RG has great confidence against Cone!!!!! LOL

RG won only two championships:

a) The first during the Governor's Cup in 2002 when the Purefoods TJ Hotdogs won against it against Alaska Milk,4-3. RG replaced Eric Altamirano, who became an assistant coach of the RP Team. The 2002 Winter Olympics was held at Salt Lake City,Utah in the United States.

b) The second one was during the Philippine Cup in 2006 when he led the Purefoods Chunkee Hotdogs against the Red Bull Barako, 4-2. It was also the same year wherein the 2006 Winter Olympics was held at Turin, Italy.

So with the current 2010 Winter Olympics held at Vancouver,Canada and if the Purefoods Hotdogs enters the PBA Finals, RG might win his 3rd PBA championship? Will the Winter Olympic year be a factor at all?

What do you think,jaemark?
#13.1.3.1 jaemark on 2010-02-19 11:40 (Reply)

Aside from the Winter Olympics, the Asian Games could be a factor. Read more...

RG won only two championships:

a) The first during the Governor's Cup in 2002 when the Purefoods TJ Hotdogs won against it against Alaska Milk,4-3. RG replaced Eric Altamirano, who became an assistant coach of the RP Team. The 2002 Asian Games was held at Busan,South Korea.

b) The second one was during the Philippine Cup in 2006 when he led the Purefoods Chunkee Hotdogs against the Red Bull Barako, 4-2. It was also the same year wherein 2006 Asian Games was held at Doha,Qatar.

The 2010 Asian Games will be held at Guangzhou,China. If the Purefoods Hotdogs enters the PBA Finals, will RG be due for his 3rd Championship? Will the year when the Asian Games were held be a factor at all considering that RG won his two championships during those years?

What do you think,jaemark? LOL

Give credit where credit is due!!!! RG maybe a not-so-popular coach among Purefoods fans (including me), but didn't he manage to win a championship against Alaska, who has Tim Cone at helm and a top-rated team, and coming from behind with a 3-1 deficit at that.
It only means that RG has the potential to be a good coach if he works hard on being one.

#16.2 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-19 05:45 (Reply)
I read from Philippine Star that Alaska Coach has some doubts of either facing Purefoods or SMB is enough proof of that. Tim Cone is not confident of winning whether he faces the Beermen or the Giants. Doubts despite the fact that it gain outright semis slot and it won against Ginebra by a sweep.
#16.3 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-19 05:47 (Reply)
Doubts also despite the fact that Alaska is playing better this conference considering that the SMB has yet to win against the Aces and it beat Purefoods during the eliminations.

Doubts also despite the fact that Tim Cone has 12 PBA championships as compared to both Siot, who has only 3 championships and RG,who only has 2 championships. Both Siot and RG has a total of only 5 championships, which is not even half of number of titles the Cone has won in the PBA.

"I’ve been in the finals a bunch of time. I’ve been to all-Filipino finals two times in the last couple of years and we keep on losing. So we have a streak to break. Both (Purefoods and San Miguel) cause us a lot of problem. San Miguel with its incredibly tough lineup. We have a problem matching up with Mick Pennisi, a big man who shoots well from the outside. Arwind Santos is a hell of a match-up for any team and they have guys like Mike Cortez who works well with their system,”
- Alaska Coach Tim Cone

Read the statement of Tim Cone. These words should come from a coach who just swept their opponent and reached the Finals. There is definitely a feeling of doubt in him.

i think alaska would still be favorites whoever they face in the Finals. that crew has been consistently good for three straight all-Filipino tournaments already, and they've gelled together perfectly this year.
#16.6.1 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-19 14:41 (Reply)
Alaska will be favorites. But still, I have doubts about the Aces particularly Coach Tim Cone to raise the level of play of his team and the level of his coaching when it matters most.
#16.6.2 Joey_Escalera on 2010-02-20 05:35 (Reply)
Based an interview yesterday, Alaska coach Tim Cone is nervous of either teams - SMB or Purefoods. It wasn't an effort to gain psychological advantage on his part. He did not show any confidence at all despite gaining an automatic slot in the semis and sweeping Ginebra in the semis to gain appearance in the All Filipino Conference finals. His performance in the past AFC Finals still hounds him up to now wherein his team would get the series lead and end up losing. Despite of the advantage the would be placed on the Aces considering that they are playing well, I doubt that they will continue to play well when the championship starts. The ghost of losing a series after taking a lead still hounds Tim Cone.

I am not guilty. I don't adhere to everything that QH writes in his columns as well as what he does not write in his columns. Here are some examples of those:

1. QH never wrote anything about RP Smart Gilas' 3rd place achievement in Dubai.
2. QH bashed George Karl's coaching abilities due to the loss of the Western team in an NBA All-Star Game.
3. QH defended Ginebra's walkout back in 1990 made it look like an act of principle.
4. QH made it look that the TNT management was not aware of Coach Chot's decision of a walkout when in fact they were fully behind it.
5.QH made it look in the past that the RP Powerade can win the championship in the 2009 FIBA-Asia when we know that it was a complete B.S.

I am a sports fan.I just read and write whatever I observe.
Besides, I don't think that all Philstar bloggers are QH fans,Kung may SOLID QH fans sa Philstar,IILAN LANG IYON. LOL

RG has a great match-up against Siot, who I believe is not a not-so-popular coach among SMB fans either.LOL

But still, a win against SMB is good achievement for Purefoods since it has a talented line-up.Aside from that, it now has a complete line-up with the return of Danny I and Danny S. The two Danny's together with Arwind Santos, the leading MVP candidate, makes SMB's frontline one of the best in PBA history!!!!

- Jaemark"

- If Purefoods enter the PBA Finals and wins against Alaska, it will be a marvelous achievement. I think you have every right to defend him.

And I think that RG has finally arrived as a coach. Alaska just won by a sweep over Ginebra so their confidence is extremely high. Aside from that, Tim Cone is the best PBA coach we have today with 12 PBA championships in his 20 year tenure in Alaska.RG definitely lacks experience and talent in terms of their coaching match-up with Cone. Aside from that, Alaska is a top rated team and it is a lot better at least this conference is concerned since it cinched an outright semis slot while Purefoods has to go through the quarterfinals. And last but not the least, many PBA observers will be betting on Aces to win against the Giants.

It's still a long way to go,San Miguel is too talent laden to gave up a series just like that much as i want Purefoods to win it will still pass the proverbial eye of a needle to beat San Miguel. Its 2-2 not 3-1 and Purefoods is the one catching up,they have not controlled the series.Let us not think of the finals but keep in mind that once San Miguel play their A game ,purefoods is always at a lost.
To sum it all im still keeping my fingers crossed that coach Ryan still has enough ace in his much maligned sleeves to pull an upset against a talent laden team.
#26.1 kugmong_batchoy on 2010-02-19 10:55 (Reply)
It's an even match already. SMB's talent laden line-up, for me, is not a plus point for them. Too many lead roles that their insignificant coach is already having problems distributing their playing times.

Forget the first four games. It's best of 3 games already. All PF has to do is be aggresive on the basket as what the 2 yaps + kerby does. Don't trust the ball on rabies all the time. Pingris is fine but he's inconsistent.

For SMB, well... enough has been said. If the Double D can find a way to compliment each other + Penissi hitting at least 3 treys + Dondon and Jonas on the wings, they're unstoppable. Deep bench will not win them the series. Leadership inside the court is obviously what is lacking.

Will the Winter Olympic year be a factor at all considering that RG won his two championships during those years?

What do you think,bloggers? LOL

Naguluhan talaga ako dito...

Let's break it down.

"Coz i'm secretly praying they lose so that I won't spend."

Meaning, if PF lose, you don't need to spend which means if PF wins, you will treat your 4 friends to dinner. Ergo, you are rooting for PF.

"I have promised 4 friends to free dinner at Chili's dinner. I have a feeling RG will mess it up!"

Mess what up? Do you mean RG will lead the PF for a loss and that's why you are worried? Or are you worried RG will win it for PF?

Kindly expound on what you really meant because i'm very concern on what you really wanted to say here.

PS. Next time, kindly write it not in a contradicting manner and only in straightforward sentences so that we don't need to read it between the lines. OK? Ang gulo gulo mo kasi... para kang _____ (fill in the blanks) LOL

I think PF has a great chance of winning this series. Ryan Gregorio was video analyst for Purefoods, that's probably he landed the Coaching Job when Eric Altamirano left PF. Yesterday the team didn't practice, but they did some video analyzing of Game 4.
So, as long as RG continues to Video Analyze and let his assistant coach do the coaching on Defense and Offense, we have a good chance! hehehehe.
By the way, great idea coach of telling James Yap and Kerby to let their teammates score to help them, now you we are talking about GOATS when you lose! hehe

RG has now won three championships:

a) The first during the Governor's Cup in 2002 when the Purefoods TJ Hotdogs won against it against Alaska Milk,4-3.

It was also the same year wherein the 2006 Winter Olympics was held at Turin, Italy

c)The third one was during the Philippine Cup in 2010 when he led the Purefoods Tender juicy Giants against the Alaska via a historic sweep, 4-0. It was also the same year wherein the 2010 Winter Olympics was held at Vancouver,Canada.

Take it from Coach Ryan,"“We will definitely not wait for another four years, another winter Olympics to win another championship. Four years are far in between. We’ll continue to strive hard. We’ll try to be the best again (in the next conference)”

Go for it Coach!!!! Go Purefoods!!!

Kayang kaya niyo iyan considering that you are going to be free from criticism from Purefoods fans especially jaemark!!!
#67 Joey_Escalera on 2010-03-07 01:56 (Reply)
Jaemark, I think it is good that we first celebrate this championship won by Purefoods while the PBA rests after the All-Filipino conference.
#68 Joey_Escalera on 2010-03-07 01:58 (Reply)
This blog was probably part of RG's inspiration to help the team win the AFC championship. Dapat may bonus rin ang firequinito.LOL
#69 Joey_Escalera on 2010-03-07 02:03 (Reply)
"Betting on Purefoods coach Ryan Gregorio" is good article for RG for it is a chance to redeem himself as PF coach for people deserve a second chance ( for RG - it has been multiple chances already!!!LOL) in life."
- At least, RG did not disappoint many Purefoods fans in the AFC championship.
